1. Multi-objective topology optimization and numerical investigation of heat sinks based on triply periodic minimal surface lattices

Abstract: In thermal management applications, such as heat sinks (HSs) for electronic devices, cellular materials have extensively been employed. In recent years, there has been a growing attention towards employing topology optimization for enhancing hydraulic and heat transfer performance of HSs by optimizing their topology. The utilization of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) based structures presents distinctive prospects for customizing the design and performance of HSs. However, their potential remains unexplored in the context of customizing additively manufactured porous optimized HSs. Consequently, there is a need for research aimed at examining their coupled hydraulic and thermal performance. Density mapping approaches are used to build a variable density TPMS-based HSs from the output of topology optimization by applying the TPMS level-set equations that relate relative density and the level-set constant. In this work, a relative density mapping methodology is applied to thermo-fluid optimization problem to design a TPMS-based convective cooling system. An in-house MATLAB code was developed to perform a multi-objective topology optimization. After that, uniform and variable density (mapped from topology optimization results) TPMS-based HSs are analyzed using Star-CCM + CFD software to investigate their hydraulic and heat transfer performance. An experimental setup was established, and the numerical results were validated using uniform TPMS-based heat sinks. Results showed that incorporating TPMS with topology optimization has a great potential in thermal management applications as pressure drop across the heat sink was reduced while maintaining the performance.

2. Vat photopolymerization of multifunctional fresnel lenses for ocular management

Abstract: In this study, multifunctional Fresnel lenses were explored as a potential solution for correcting vision in patients with color vision deficiency (CVD) and high myopia. Current studies have primarily focused on color vision correction through the 3D printing of glasses and contact lenses. However, the potential of 3D-printed multifunctional devices, such as Fresnel lenses, goes beyond addressing a single vision correction issue. For this study, computer-aided design (CAD) model of Fresnel lens with high diopter based on constant height configuration was developed. The CAD model was successfully fabricated using vat photopolymerization 3D printer, employing laboratory-prepared transparent HEMA resin. The resin was modified with two Atto dyes (565 nm and 488 nm), known for their ability to filter out problematic wavelengths (400–500 nm and 540–580 nm) to address color vision deficiency. The printed lenses were characterized by their chemical, physical, and optical properties using various characterization techniques. The focusing performance was evaluated using focal length measurements, and the results obtained were less than 2 mm deviation from the design value, having the potential to assist in higher myopic vision correction. The resulting optical spectra were compared with commercial glasses, revealing close agreement for CVD correction. These results expand the potential applications of multifunctional Fresnel lenses in ophthalmology, demonstrating their effectiveness as vision-correcting lenses and imaging systems.

3. Topology optimization and biomechanical evaluation of bone plates for tibial bone fractures considering bone healing

Abstract: Implant designs highly influence their biomechanical performances when fixed with load-bearing long bone fractures. In this research work, the topology optimisation technique was used to obtain different shapes and designs of the bone plates according to three different loadings, e.g. lateral bending (LB), axial compression (AC), and physiological loads (PL), and solid volume fractions Vf of 30% and 70%. Bi-phasic mechano-regulation algorithm was used to investigate the callus healing for a given bone plate design, and stresses in screws and bone plates were monitored. To further validate the bone plate designs, fatigue analyses using Fe-safe and three-point bending tests were performed using additively manufactured plates. Topology-optimised bone plate PL with Vf 70% showed the maximum bending stiffness (peak load of 138 N and bending stiffness of 29 N/mm) among the optimised bone plates, with the best callus healing normalised stiffness of 0.6 and 0.7 in iterations 21 and 42, respectively. Thus, the bone plates produced using actual loading conditions (PL) outperformed other loading conditions during the biomechanical evaluation of fractured bones.

4. Topology optimised novel lattice structures for enhanced energy absorption and impact resistance

Abstract: This study evaluates topologically optimized lattice structures for high strain rate loading, crucial for impact resistance. Using the BESO (Bidirectional Evolution Structural Optimisation) topology optimisation algorithm, CompIED and ShRIED topologies are developed for enhanced energy absorption and impact resistance. Micromechanical simulations reveal CompIED surpasses theoretical elasticity limits for isotropic cellular materials, while the hybrid design ShRComp achieves theoretical maximum across all relative densities. Compared to TPMS, truss, and plate lattices, the proposed structures exhibit higher uniaxial modulus. Manufactured via fused deposition modeling with ABS thermoplastic, their energy absorption capabilities are assessed through compression tests and impact simulations. The ShRComp lattice demonstrates superior energy absorption under compression compared to CompIED. Impact analyses of CompIED and ShRComp sandwich structures at varying velocities show exceptional resistance to perforation and higher impact absorption efficiency, outperforming other classes of sandwich structures at similar densities. These findings position these new and novel topologies as promising candidates for impact absorption applications.

5. Modelling, optimization, and testing of novel cuboidal spherical plate lattice structures

Abstract: ABSTRACTThis study investigates the mechanical behavior of a novel set of Cuboidal Spherical Plate Lattice (CSPL) materials. The procedure of constrained-domain topology optimization is implemented with the aim of enhancing stiffness. The micromechanical finite element homogenization approach is used to evaluate the effective elastic-plastic properties of the CSPLs and their topologically optimized counterparts, TOCSPLs (Topologically Optimized Cuboidal Spherical Plate Lattices). The TOCSPLs demonstrate higher uniaxial, shear, and bulk moduli compared to the CSPLs, with an increase of 31%, 14%, and 36% respectively. Moreover, there is an increase in the yield strengths under uniaxial, shear, and hydrostatic loading conditions, with enhancements of 103%, 55%, and 62%, respectively. The topologies are additively manufactured through Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) out of ABS thermoplastic material. The quasi-static compression experiments demonstrate the superiority of TOCSPL 111+100 over the other topologies in terms of uniaxial modulus. The suffix 111+100 denotes the crystallographic planar orientations in which the solid plate-like disks were formed within a cubic system. The topologies proposed herein outperform certain types of Triply Periodic Minimal Surface, honeycomb, truss-, and plate-based lattice materials. The proposed topologies offer a compelling justification for their utilization in applications that require load-bearing and impact absorption capabilities.

6. Designing a TPMS metamaterial via deep learning and topology optimization

Abstract: Data-driven models that act as surrogates for computationally costly 3D topology optimization techniques are very popular because they help alleviate multiple time-consuming 3D finite element analyses during optimization. In this study, one such 3D CNN-based surrogate model for the topology optimization of Schoen’s gyroid triply periodic minimal surface unit cell is investigated. Gyroid-like unit cells are designed using a voxel algorithm and homogenization-based topology optimization codes in MATLAB. A few such optimization data are used as input–output for supervised learning of the topology-optimization process via the 3D CNN model in Python code. These models could then be used to instantaneously predict the optimized unit cell geometry for any topology parameters. The high accuracy of the model was demonstrated by a low mean square error metric and a high Dice coefficient metric. The model has the major disadvantage of running numerous costly topology optimization runs but has the advantages that the trained model can be reused for different cases of TO and that the methodology of the accelerated design of 3D metamaterials can be extended for designing any complex, computationally costly problems of metamaterials with multi-objective properties or multiscale applications. The main purpose of this paper is to provide the complete associated MATLAB and PYTHON codes for optimizing the topology of any cellular structure and predicting new topologies using deep learning for educational purposes.

7. Effective elastic properties of novel aperiodic monotile-based lattice metamaterials

Abstract: Two-dimensional aperiodic lattices emerge as remarkably isotropic metamaterials with potentially unconventional mechanical behavior. This study investigates numerically estimating the effective elastic properties, as a function of relative density, of novel two-dimensional aperiodic lattice metamaterials derived from the recently discovered aperiodic monotiles, known as the “Hat,” “Turtle,” and “Spectre” tiles. Furthermore, several classes of the Hat-based lattices; namely Hexagon (H), Triangle (T), Parallelogram (P), and Fan (F), are also investigated. The results show that these aperiodic lattices have isotropic elastic properties independent of relative density. The Hat-based and Turtle lattices exhibit larger elastic moduli, gradually converging to the Spectre-based lattices as relative density increases. A distinctive feature of the Hat-based lattices is their directional auxetic behaviour with an anisotropic Poisson’s ratio, whereas the Turtle lattices show an auxetic behaviour only at lower relative densities. Despite anisotropic Poisson’s ratios, the current aperiodic lattices maintain elastic isotropy, offering a unique blend of anisotropic auxetic behavior and isotropic elastic moduli. This study contributes to a better understanding of the elastic properties of aperiodic monotile lattice metamaterials and their potential for engineering their mechanical behavior for certain applications.

8. Monitoring of Heracleum sosnowskyi Manden Using UAV Multisensors: Case Study in Moscow Region, Russia

Abstract: Detection and mapping of Sosnowsky’s hogweed (HS) using remote sensing data have proven effective, yet challenges remain in identifying, localizing, and eliminating HS in urban districts and regions. Reliable data on HS growth areas are essential for monitoring, eradication, and control measures. Satellite data alone are insufficient for mapping the dynamics of HS distribution. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with high-resolution spatial data offer a promising solution for HS detection and mapping. This study aimed to develop a method for detecting and mapping HS growth areas using a proposed algorithm for thematic processing of multispectral aerial imagery data. Multispectral data were collected using a DJI Matrice 200 v2 UAV (Dajiang Innovation Technology Co., Shenzhen, China) and a MicaSense Altum multispectral camera (MicaSense Inc., Seattle, WA, USA). Between 2020 and 2022, 146 sites in the Moscow region of the Russian Federation, covering 304,631 hectares, were monitored. Digital maps of all sites were created, including 19 digital maps (orthophoto, 5 spectral maps, and 13 vegetation indices) for four experimental sites. The collected samples included 1080 points categorized into HS, grass cover, and trees. Student’s t-test showed significant differences in vegetation indices between HS, grass, and trees. A method was developed to determine and map HS-growing areas using the selected vegetation indices NDVI > 0.3, MCARI > 0.76, user index BS1 > 0.10, and spectral channel green > 0.14. This algorithm detected HS in an area of 146.664 hectares. This method can be used to monitor and map the dynamics of HS distribution in the central region of the Russian Federation and to plan the required volume of pesticides for its eradication.

Wide distribution of horizontal wells with multi-stage hydraulic fracturing requires development of methods of researching hydraulic fractures in the field of optimization of completion technologies, hydraulic fracturing and field development monitoring. The instrumental methods of researching fluid inflow, which include field geophysical research, under conditions of horizontal wells with multistage fracturing, find out the set of missing, which essentially reduce it reliability. Aim. Improvement of the quality of field logging in horizontal wells with multistage fracturing by developing criteria for application of research technologies. Methods. Analysis of field geophysical data of horizontal wells with hydraulic fractures in PJSC Rosneft Oil Company. Results. The authors have developed an expert decision-making system, which has the form of matrix with criteria of application of field geophysical research methods to horizontal wells with multistage hydraulic fracturing. This matrix enables in dependence on the well parameters (well construction, number and position of hydraulic fracturing ports, well fluid content) and scenario conditions (type of problem to be solved, inflow localization, characteristics of geophysical devices) to estimate the probability of delivery of devices inside the well with different ways, the informative value of field geophysical research, the quality of solution of the problem to be set. During pilot works the matrix was improved by the methods of researching low-rate horizontal wells. The paper also considered the experience of using low-rate wells with a packer flow meter and spectral noise logging.

10. Influence of carbon nanotubes on printing quality and mechanical properties of 3D printed cementitious materials

Abstract: This paper presents the impact of incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the 3D printing of cementitious materials, along with the effective dispersion of CNTs. Compared to the control mix, adding CNTs with superplasticizer significantly enhanced the printing quality by reducing the error in height of two-layers from 38% to 30% and an 81% enhancement in the buildability. Moreover, rheology properties revealed shear-thinning behaviour with lower viscosity, resulting in improved flowability. The progressive increase in CNT concentrations up to 0.2% yielded a noteworthy improvement in the mechanical properties. At 28 days, the incorporation of 0.2% CNTs resulted in a significant increase in the flexural strength, compressive strength, and Young's modulus by 99%, 72%, and 43%, respectively, compared to the mix containing silica fume. Microstructural investigation of the CNT-cement matrix revealed nanoscale crack bridges formed by CNTs, reinforcing the cementitious material and improving its mechanical properties.

11. Insights into acoustic properties of seven selected triply periodic minimal surfaces-based structures: A numerical study

Abstract: Poly(methyl methacrylate)-based triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) structures promise great potential in phononic applications, but the complicated TPMS structure induces a design challenge for controlling their properties. Numerical acoustic simulations of seven major PMMA-based TPMS lattice structures are presented for low-frequency sound attenuation applications while varying their relative density. Except for the local resonances in primitive and Neovius-based lattice structures, the acoustic properties of other TPMS structures show a common Bragg bandgap with a central frequency of around 435 Hz and a bandwidth of around 286 Hz, which results from multiple scattering of periodic unit cells. In contrast, the acoustic bandgaps of primitive and Neovius-based lattices have much smaller and larger complete bandgaps, respectively, which are mainly attributed to the local resonances in their geometric cavities with different sizes. Thus, by taking the mechanism of generated bandgaps in the TPMS-based lattice structures into consideration, we can design suitable bandgaps for acoustic applications in the specific frequency range.

12. Combining multiple lattice-topology functional grading strategies for enhancing the dynamic compressive behavior of TPMS-based metamaterials

Abstract: Recent developments in additive manufacturing technology have enabled the precise fabrication of intricate lattice materials, also known as metamaterials, for various engineering applications, particularly those involving dynamics. Lattice materials, consisting of sheet-based triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures, have been extensively studied for their mechanical performance under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. However, less attention has been given to assessing the effect of grading the lattice topological properties for improved compression loading. Consequently, this paper investigates the effect of topology hybridization, periodicity gradation, cell compaction, and combining multiple functional grading strategies on the quasi-static and dynamic compressive behavior of sheet-based TPMS lattice materials. We conducted quasi-static compression tests to evaluate different regular sheet-based TPMS architectures and select the most promising candidates for topology-functional gradation. Subsequently, numerical simulations were performed to analyze the compressive deformation behavior and properties of functionally graded sheet-based TPMS lattice materials alongside the uniform topologies. This test showed that Schwartz Diamond (Du) and Face-centered Rhombic Dodecahedral (FRDu) lattice structures exhibit superior compressive properties in quasi-static conditions. Furthermore, simulations revealed that the lattice topology and grading strategy significantly influence the quasi-static and dynamic compressive behavior of sheet-based TPMS lattice materials. Specifically, the IWPu topology showed a notable increase in compressive strength and energy absorption compared to the other lattice types as the strain rate increased. Hybridizing Du and FRDu topologies produced a strictly layer-wise deformation pattern, resulting in improved quasi-static and dynamic compressive properties compared to the elementary topology. However, a superior uniaxial compressive modulus and strength were achieved by gradually adjusting the periodicity of a single topology (Du) while maintaining the same relative density. The combination of relative density and periodicity gradation led to more desirable deformation behavior while enhancing the overall compressive properties of the metamaterial, regardless of the strain rate.

13. Numerical investigation of residual stresses in thin-walled additively manufactured structures from selective laser melting

Abstract: Selective laser melting (SLM), a metal laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing method, involves several cycles of very high temperature gradient heating and cooling during the solidification of each layer, which can cause the accumulation of detrimental residual stresses in the 3D printed structure. This work uses a thermo-mechanical computational modeling approach to investigate the formation of residual stresses in thin-walled structures and also investigates the effects of varying taper on the evolution of residual stress profiles of the build. Three material grades; namely, Titanium alloy (Ti64), Stainless steel (SS316L) and Inconel (IN718) have been used for this study. The results show that varying taper thickness up to a certain value has a considerable effect on residual stress evolutions in thin-wall structures, however, beyond a certain value of the taper level, the residual stresses are observed to converge. Also, it is observed that the tensile stresses at the edges of the wall are almost equal or exceed the yield stress of the materials. Among the three material grades considered, the magnitude of residual stress was higher in Ti64 and the stresses are dominant in the build direction. The simulation framework is also applied to analyze the effect of residual stresses on the mechanical properties of complex thin-wall structures such as TPMS (Triply Periodic Minimum Surfaces) lattice structure, using Schwarz Primitive (SP) as a case study. It is observed that the residual stresses lower the effective elastic properties of the lattice structures by 6% ∼ 10% for the three material grades but has no effect on the effective plastic behavior of the material.

Abstract: Metamaterials are architected cellular materials, also known as lattice materials, that are inspired by nature or human engineering intuition, and provide multifunctional attributes that cannot be achieved by conventional polymeric materials and composites. There has been an increasing interest in the design, fabrication, and testing of polymeric metamaterials due to the recent advances in digital design methods, additive manufacturing techniques, and machine learning algorithms. To this end, the present review assembles a collection of recent research on the design, fabrication and testing of polymeric metamaterials, and it can act as a reference for future engineering applications as it categorizes the mechanical properties of existing polymeric metamaterials from literature. The research within this study reveals there is a need to develop more expedient and straightforward methods for designing metamaterials, similar to the implicitly created TPMS lattices. Additionally, more research on polymeric metamaterials under more complex loading scenarios is required to better understand their behavior. Using the right machine learning algorithms in the additive manufacturing process of metamaterials can alleviate many of the current difficulties, enabling more precise and effective production with product quality.

15. Multi-objective topology optimization of passive heat sinks including self-weight based on triply periodic minimal surface lattices

Abstract: Advancements in additive manufacturing technology allows design of novel lightweight passive heat sink based on triply periodic minimum surfaces (TPMS) lattices. Topology optimization has been adopted to obtain efficient lightweight passive heat sink designs that maximize heat dissipation. However, in the topology optimization framework, the mechanical loads are usually not considered which limits its application under severe loading conditions. This paper presents a multi-objective topology optimization based on Solid Isotropic Method of Penalization (SIMP) approach that simultaneously optimize both thermal and structural objective functions to yield optimized structures with better heat dissipation and enhanced structural integrity. Three load cases are studied considering both the thermal and structural load scenarios. For each scenario, a weighted sum method is used to linearly combine the two objective functions in order to obtain the Pareto front. The obtained optimal configuration is further transformed to generate a TPMS-based structure employing a novel density mapping approach. Primitive (P), Diamond (D), Gyroid (G), and IWP TPMS structures are considered. To further study the effectiveness of mapping, the thermal performance of the mapped structures is measured using the effective thermal conductivity The mapped Primitive TPMS-based structures were found to possess superior heat conduction performance compared to other mapped TPMS structures. The unit cell mapping sensitivity along and perpendicular to heating direction was also investigated. It was found out that increasing number of unit cells in a direction perpendicular to heating direction enhanced the structure's effective conductivity. The structural integrity of the mapped heat sink structures were also examined measuring their strain energy density under both self weight loads and external structural loads.

16. Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the process of thermal inactivition of kluyveromyces marxianus inulinase

Abstract: Background: Inulinase is widely found in microorganisms and higher plants. It catalyzes the reaction of the hydrolysis of inulin, which is present in the tubers and roots of many plants, to fructose and a small amount of glucose. Inulin is one of several plant-based polysaccharides that contain glucose or fructose. It is used as a substrate in industrial fermentation processes and in the food industry due to its relatively cheap and abundant source for the microbiological production of high fructose juices, ethanol, acetone and butanol. Inulin-derived oligosaccharides are also used in the medical and food sectors. Inulinase which produced from the yeast K. marxianus at levels close to commercial use. This indicates that inulinase can be used in the production of fructose and fructose syrups. So our main object is to study the effect of different temperatures on the conformation of the Kluyveromyces marxianus inulinase macromolecule, to provide optimal conditions for aniline hydrolysis by inulinase. Materials and method: Method of isolation and purification of the inulinase enzyme from Kluyveromyces marxianus, as well as the determination of the protein content and enzyme activity as mentioned in the context of the research. Experiments were carried out to study the thermal stability of enzyme. For this, an enzyme solution at a concentration of 5•10-5 mol / l was incubated in a time interval of 10-60 min at different temperatures, followed by determination of the catalytic activity. It is known that different types of bonds and interactions participate in the formation of the molecular structure of enzymes, which are covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds, salt bridges, hydrophobic interactions, so our main goal is to study the effect of different temperatures on the formation of the enzyme molecule in order to provide optimal conditions for aniline hydrolysis. by enzyme. Results: of this study revealed that the residual activity of the enzyme after 60 minutes of incubation at 50 °C was 10% of the initial activity at 60 °C 7%. As for the Rate Constants of thermal inactivation of Inulinase at 70 °C were 3.45. Conclusions: Results of this study were important and useful in determining parameters of inulinase enzyme. Based on the shape of the curves of the dependence of the catalytic activity of Kluyveromyces marxianus inulinase on the time of thermal inactivation in the temperature range of 20-80 ° C.

17. On the computational modeling, additive manufacturing, and testing of tube-networks TPMS-based graphene lattices and characterizing their multifunctional properties

Abstract: Lattices based on triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs), which have been receiving increasing interest due to advances in additive manufacturing, are known now to be outperforming other cellular materials in several properties, enabling wider multifunctional applications. In this work, we focus on fabricating graphene TPMS lattices, viz., Gyroid, Schoen's I-WP (IWP), and Diamond, and investigate their multifunctional properties experimentally and computationally. The three-dimensional (3D) graphene structures were synthesized using a self-assembly hydrothermal-assisted dip-coating technique and the resulting lattices were tested for their mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties and compared to finite element simulation results. The graphene TPMS lattices resulting from the fabrication take the topology of a new class of TPMS architectures that are referred to here as the TPMS tube-networks. IWP demonstrated the highest elastic modulus as well as electrical and thermal conductivities. This study shows that 3D porous tube graphene can be utilized in designing new lightweight structural materials of low density with controllable thermal and electrical properties and mechanical strength with a potential to be employed in multifunctional engineering applications.

All patients had been subjected to complete preoperative and postoperative ophthalmological examinations — unaided VA, BCVA, refraction, Pentacam, and contrast sensitivity examinations at 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year follow-ups.Results: Mean unaided VA had changed significantly from 0.649± 0.239 logMAR preoperatively to 0.514± 0.222 (P=0.014), 0.419± 0.162 (P< 0.001), and 0.379± 0.142 (P< 0.001) logMAR at the three follow-up visits, respectively. Mean BCVA had changed significantly from 0.326± 0.144 logMAR preoperatively to 0.231± 0.140 (P=0.006) at 1-year follow-up. Mean spherical equivalent refraction had decreased significantly at 6-month (P=0.0298) and 1-year follow-up (P=0.0081). Mean steep keratometry (K2) had also significantly reduced from 51.89± 3.81 D to 49.87± 4.57 D (P=0.034) at 6 months and 49.40± 4.39 D (P=0.011) at 1 year. Mean refractive and keratometric astigmatism had significantly decreased at all follow-up visits.Conclusion: At 1-year follow-up, keraring intrastromal corneal ring–segment insertion assisted by femtosecond laser performed simultaneously with corneal collagen cross-linking resulted in an improvement in visual, refractive, and topographic outcomes, which may suggest it is an effective treatment of keratoconus.Keywords: keratoconus, corneal collagen cross-linking, Pentacam, ICRS

19. An optimization case study to design additively manufacturable porous heat sinks based on triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattices

Abstract: Cellular materials have been widely used in thermal management applications such as heat sinks (HSs) for electronic devices. The topology optimization technique has recently gained interest in designing the topology of HSs with optimized thermal performance. Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) based structures offer unique opportunities for tailoring the design and performance of HSs, but their potential has not been explored in customizing additively manufactured porous optimized HSs. Therefore, research is needed to analyze the thermal performance, such as thermal conductivity, within optimized HSs customized with TPMS structures. In this study, the thermal HSs were designed using the topology optimization technique and two unique mapping approaches; namely, averaging and gradient methods, were proposed to transform porous cellular structures to gyroid-based HSs. Unit-cell homogenization approach was used to determine the effective thermal conductivity of gyroid-sheet and gyroid-solid structures. Effect of heat transfer area on thermal transport of optimized topologies was also investigated. Computational analysis was performed to analyze and compare the thermal transport in the optimized porous and gyroid mapped HSs. Moreover, mapped structure's ability to dissipate heat was examined by calculating the maximum temperatures when applying an external heat source. Mapped gyroid-sheet structure obtained through gradient method demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed mapping approach in terms of effective thermal conductivity. The findings of the research provide valuable guidance for customizing the topology and predicting the performance of TPMS based heat sinks in terms of pure heat conduction analysis.

20. Fluid flow and heat transfer of porous TPMS architected heat sinks in free convection environment

Abstract: Heat dissipation in electronic devices is challenging due its limited size and cooling space constraint. Implementing Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS)-based cellular structures could enhance the thermal exchange mechanism due to their novel architected, interconnected, and inter wind porous topologies and high surface area to volume ratio. In this study, three novel mathematically-driven TPMS heatsink structures were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based models. TPMS heat sinks consisting of seven triply periodic unit cells were examined to investigate their thermal performance and fluid flow behavior in free convection air environment. The thermal performance indicators as convection heat transfer coefficient and surface temperature under parametric variation of applied heat load, fluid enclosure boundary condition, and TPMS structure orientation were determined. Enclosure boundary conditions found to have a significant effect on the thermal behavior of each heat sink structure; including radiation contribution was found to account for approximately 23% of the overall heat transfer in due to the complex TPMS internal structure. Three empirical Nusslet number correlations were then derived for the investigated TPMS structures. The results showed that TPMS-based heat sinks outperform conventional heat sinks by 48–61% owing to the random perturbations of flow and high packing density. This work shows the potential of TPMS porous architectures as very promising heat sinks.

Abstract: Using $(27.12\pm 0.14)\times10^8$ $\psi(3686)$ decays and data samples of $e^+e^-$ collisions with $\sqrt{s}$ from 4.130 to 4.780~GeV collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of the electromagnetic Dalitz transition $h_c\to e^+e^-\eta_c$ with a statistical significance of $5.4\sigma$. We measure the ratio of the branching fractions $\frac{\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow e^+e^-\eta_c)}{\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrow \gamma \eta_c)}$ separately for the $h_c$ samples produced via $\psi(3686)\to\pi^0h_c$ and $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-h_c$. The average ratio is determined to be $(0.59\pm0.10(\text{stat.})\pm0.04(\text{syst.}))\%$, where the uncertainty includes both statistical and systematic components.

23. On the Effect of Lattice Topology on Mechanical Properties of SLS Additively Manufactured Sheet-, Ligament-, and Strut-Based Polymeric Metamaterials

Abstract: Cellular lattices with architectural intricacy or metamaterials have gained a substantial amount of attention in the past decade due to the recent advances in additive manufacturing methods. The lattice topology controls its physical and mechanical properties; therefore, the main challenge is selecting the appropriate lattice topology for a desired function and application. In this work, we comprehensively study the topology–property relationship of three classes of polymer metamaterials based on triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) of sheet/shell and ligament types, and other types of well-known strut-based lattices. The study uses a holistic approach of designing, additive manufacturing, microstructural characterization, and compressive uniaxial mechanical testing of these polymer lattices that are 3D-printed using the laser powder bed fusion technique known as selective laser sintering (SLS). In total, 55 lattices with different topologies and relative densities were 3D-printed and tested. Printing quality was assessed using scanning electron microscopy and micro-computed tomography. The extracted mechanical properties of elastic modulus, yield strength, plateau strength, and energy absorption are thoroughly compared between the different lattice architectures. The results show that all the investigated ligament-based TPMS polymer lattices exhibit bending-dominated elastic and plastic behavior, indicating that they are suitable candidates for energy absorbing applications. The sheet-based TPMS polymer lattices, similarly to the well-known Octet-Truss lattice, exhibited an elastic stretching-dominated mode of deformation and proved to have exceptional stiffness as compared to all other topologies, especially at low relative densities. However, the sheet-based TPMS polymer lattices exhibited a bending-dominated plastic behavior which is mainly driven by manufacturing defects. Overall, however, sheet-based TPMS polymer lattices exhibited the best mechanical properties, followed by strut-based lattices and finally by ligament-based TPMS lattices. Finally, it is depicted that at high relative densities, the mechanical properties of lattices of various architectures tend to converge, which implies that the topological effect is more significant at low relative densities. Generally, this study provides important insights about the selection of polymer mechanical metamaterials for various applications, and shows the superiority of TPMS-based polymer metamaterials as compared to several other classes of polymer mechanical metamaterials.

The AM simulation of four different sheet- and ligament-based TPMS topologies, namely, Schwarz Primitive, Schoen Gyroid, Schoen IWP-S, and IWP-L, are performed using a sequentially coupled thermomechanical finite element model to evaluate the thermal histories and residual stress evolution throughout the SLM process. The finite element results are utilized to obtain the effective mechanical properties, such as elastic modulus, yield strength, and specific energy absorption (SEA), of the TPMS lattices while accounting for the residual stress field arising from the SLM process. The mechanical properties are correlated to relative density using the Gibson–Ashby power laws and reveal that the effect of the residual stresses on the elastic modulus of the as-built TPMS samples can be significant, especially for the Schwarz Primitive and Schoen-IWP-L TPMS topologies, when compared to the results without accounting for residual stresses. However, the effect of the residual stresses is less significant on yield strength and SEA of the TPMS samples. The work demonstrates a methodology for numerical simulations of the SLM process to quantify the influence of inherited residual stresses on the effective mechanical properties of complex TPMS topologies.

Abstract: We present the first search for the leptonic decays $D^{*+}\to e^+\nu_e$ and $D^{*+}\to \mu^+\nu_\mu$ by analyzing a data sample of electron-positron collisions recorded with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.32~fb$^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed. The upper limits on the branching fractions for $D^{*+}\to e^+\nu_e$ and $D^{*+}\to \mu^+\nu_\mu$ are set to be $1.1 \times 10^{-5}$ and $4.3 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90\% confidence level, respectively., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

26. Formulation of Suppositories of Alum Produced from Bauxite Waste in Ghana for the Treatment of Hemorrhoid

Abstract: The study sought to formulate and evaluate suppositories using a locally produced brand of alum (Aw) obtained from bauxite waste generated at Awaso bauxite mine in the Western-North region of Ghana, for use in the treatment of hemorrhoids. The suppositories were formulated using shea butter modified, respectively, with amounts of beeswax and theobroma oil. In another development, theobroma oil was modified with different concentrations of beeswax. Drug-base interactions were investigated using attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The suppositories were prepared using the hot melt and trituration methods. Quality control checks were carried out on the formulations. The evaluated parameters included physical characteristics (texture, presence or absence of entrapped air, and contraction holes), weight uniformity, disintegration time, drug content, and in vitro release profile of the alum from the formulated suppositories. An in vivo analysis was carried out on the most suitable formulation to ascertain its efficacy on inflamed tissues using croton oil-induced rectal inflammation in a rat model. A critical examination of the ATR-FTIR spectra revealed no drug-base interactions. The suppository formulations passed all Pharmacopoeia stated tests. The in vivo study revealed the use of suppositories ameliorated the croton oil-induced hemorrhoid in the rectoanal region of the rats.

Abstract: Advances in additive manufacturing triggered a paradigm shift in the design of functional components allowing for complex topology-driven cellular lattices to be incorporated for the aim of reducing weight, enhancing multi-functionality, and facilitating manufacturability. In this paper, the compressive mechanical behavior of different polymeric lattices based on triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) are investigated both experimentally and computationally. The behavior of two classes of TPMS lattices are investigated; sheet- and ligament-based lattices. Samples are fabricated using the laser powder bed fusion technique, selective laser sintering, and characterized using micro-Computed Tomography (micro-CT) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). A finite-deformation hyperelastic-viscoplastic-damage constitutive model is calibrated and employed to capture the full compressive behavior of lattices. The computational results are compared to and validated against corresponding experimental results. Results show that sheet-based polymeric TPMS lattices exhibit a stretching-dominated mode of deformation and prove to have superior stiffness and strength as compared to TPMS ligament-based lattices. The numerical simulations are in good agreement with experimental results for ligament-based lattices while significant deviation from experimental results is observed for the sheet-based lattices which is attributed to uncertainty in measuring the actual relative density and relatively higher manufacturing defects.

29. Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymer/Crude Gossypol Compositions as Pour Point Depressants for Waxy Oil

Abstract: Wax deposition from crude oil that blocks the pipeline and increases the viscosity of the fluid is considered as a serious challenge for petroleum transportation. Employment of chemical additives, the so-called pour point depressants (PPDs), is widely used to solve this problem. Among them are the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers (EVAc), containing a polyethylene segment along the backbone with vinyl acetate. To improve the performance of EVAc as PPD, the compositions of this polymer with crude gossypol (CG), isolated from the refined cottonseed oil soapstock, were prepared by joint milling in a ball mill. Prepared compositions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet (UV), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The pour point and viscosity of the crude oil from the Akshabulak oil field (Kazakhstan) were studied. The compositions with 10, 20, and 25 wt% of CG demonstrate better efficiency as PPD for crude oil than EVAc at the dosage of PPD of 50, 100, 250, and 500 ppm. The improved properties of the obtained PPD in comparison with the commercial EVAc is explained by the appearance of additional nonpolar and polar groups caused by the formation of the EVAc/CG composition.

Abstract: Gyroid is a member of the triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) family. In this paper, the mechanical properties of Gyroid-structures are investigated both experimentally and computationally. 3D printing is used to fabricate polymeric Gyroid-structure specimens made of PA 2200 at different relative densities. In the finite element analysis, the Arruda-Boyce finite-deformation elasto-viscoplastic model is employed. To perform the finite element analysis, the properties of the 3D printed material are determined by a series of tension and compression tests. The finite element results of the Gyroid-structure agree very well with the experimental data. Also, the uniaxial modulus, compressive strength, and energy absorption of the Gyroid-structures are compared with those of the IWP-, Neovius-, and Primitive-structures from a previous study. The comparison shows that Gyroid-structures have relatively good mechanical properties and compete well with the other TPMS cellular structures. Abstract: A numerical simulation study on elastic wave propagation of a phononic composite structure consisting of epoxy and tungsten carbide is presented for low-frequency elastic wave attenuation applications. The calculated dispersion curves of the epoxy/tungsten carbide composite show that the propagation of elastic waves is prohibited inside the periodic structure over a frequency range. To achieve a wide bandgap, the elastic composite structure can be optimized by changing its dimensions and arrangement, including size, number, and rotation angle of square inclusions. The simulation results show that increasing the number of inclusions and the filling fraction of the unit cell significantly broaden the phononic bandgap compared to other geometric tunings. Additionally, a nonmonotonic relationship between the bandwidth and filling fraction of the composite was found, and this relationship results from spacing among inclusions and inclusion sizes causing different effects on Bragg scatterings and localized resonances of elastic waves. Moreover, the calculated transmission spectra of the epoxy/tungsten carbide composite structure verify its low-frequency bandgap behavior.

Abstract: One of the fundamental goals of particle physics is to gain microscopic understanding of the strong interaction. Electromagnetic form factors quantify the structure of hadrons in terms of charge and magnetization distributions. While the nucleon structure has been investigated extensively, data on hyperons is still scarce. It has recently been demonstrated that electron-positron annihilations into hyperon-antihyperon pairs provide a powerful tools to investigate their inner structure. We present a novel method useful for hyperon-antihyperon pairs of different types which exploits the cross section enhancement due to the vacuum polarization effect at the $J/\psi$ resonance. Using the 10 billion $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, this allows a thorough determination of the hyperon structure . The result is essentially a precise snapshot of a $\bar\Lambda\Sigma^0$~($\Lambda\bar\Sigma^0$) pair in the making, encoded in the form factor ratio and the phase. Their values are measured to be $R = 0.860\pm0.029({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.})$, $\Delta\Phi_1=(1.011\pm0.094({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.}))~\rm rad$ for $\bar\Lambda\Sigma^0$ and $\Delta\Phi_2=(2.128\pm0.094({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.}))~\rm rad$ for $\Lambda\bar\Sigma^0$, respectively. Furthermore, charge-parity (CP) breaking is investigated for the first time in this reaction and found to be consistent with CP symmetry.

Abstract: The processes $e^{+}e^{-} \to \Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}^{--}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\to \Delta^{++} \bar{p} \pi^{-} + c.c.$ are studied for the first time with $179~{\rm pb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from $2.3094$ GeV to $2.6464$ GeV. No significant signal for the $e^{+}e^{-}\to \Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}^{--}$ process is observed and the upper limit of the Born cross section is estimated at each energy point. For the process $e^{+}e^{-} \to \Delta^{++} \bar{p} \pi^{-} + c.c.$, a significant signal is observed at center-of-mass energies near 2.6454 GeV and the corresponding Born cross section is reported., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

39. Gyroid-like metamaterials: Topology optimization and Deep Learning

Abstract: Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) metamaterials characterized by mathematically-controlled topologies exhibit better mechanical properties compared to uniform structures. The unit cell topology of such metamaterials can be further optimized to improve a desired mechanical property for a specific application. However, such inverse design involves multiple costly 3D finite element analyses in topology optimization and hence has not been attempted. Data-driven models have recently gained popularity as surrogate models in the geometrical design of metamaterials. Gyroid-like unit cells are designed using a novel voxel algorithm, a homogenization-based topology optimization, and a Heaviside filter to attain optimized densities of 0-1 configuration. Few optimization data are used as input-output for supervised learning of the topology optimization process from a 3D CNN model. These models could then be used to instantaneously predict the optimized unit cell geometry for any topology parameters, thus alleviating the need to run any topology optimization for future design. The high accuracy of the model was demonstrated by a low mean square error metric and a high dice coefficient metric. This accelerated design of 3D metamaterials opens the possibility of designing any computationally costly problems involving complex geometry of metamaterials with multi-objective properties or multi-scale applications.

Abstract: Using $15.6$ $\rm fb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at twenty-four center-of-mass energies from $4.0$ to $4.6$ GeV with the BESIII detector, the helicity amplitudes of the process $e^+e^-\to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}\omega$ are analyzed for the first time. Born cross section measurements of two-body intermediate resonance states with statistical significance greater than 5$\sigma$ are presented, such as $f_{0}(500)$, $f_{0}(980)$, $f_{2}(1270)$, $f_{0}(1370)$, $b_{1}(1235)^{\pm}$, and $\rho(1450)^{\pm}$. In addition, evidence of a resonance state in $e^+e^-\to \pi^+\pi^-\omega$ production is found. The mass of this state obtained by line shape fitting is about 4.2 GeV/$c^2$, which is consistent with the production of $\psi(4160)$ or $Y(4220)$., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

Abstract: By analyzing 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data taken at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, the branching fractions of the inclusive decays $D^+\to K^0_S X$ and $D^0\to K^0_S X$ are measured to be $(32.78\pm 0.13\pm 0.27)\%$ and $(20.54\pm 0.12\pm 0.18)\%$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Abstract: Using 7.33 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226~GeV, we observe for the first time the decay $D^{\pm}_s\to \omega\pi^{\pm}\eta$ with a statistical significance of 7.6$\sigma$. The measured branching fraction of this decay is $(0.54\pm0.12\pm0.04)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: Using $e^+e^-$ annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the first measurements of the branching fractions of the inclusive decays $D^0\to \pi^+\pi^+\pi^-X$ and $D^+\to \pi^+\pi^+\pi^-X$, where pions from $K^0_S$ decays have been excluded from the $\pi^+\pi^+\pi^-$ system and $X$ denotes any possible particle combination. The branching fractions of $D^0(D^+)\to \pi^+\pi^+\pi^-X$ are determined to be ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to \pi^+\pi^+\pi^-X)=(17.60\pm0.11\pm0.22)\%$ and ${\mathcal B}(D^+\to \pi^+\pi^+\pi^-X)=(15.25\pm0.09\pm0.18)\%$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Based on 7.33 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data taken at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fraction of $D^{*+}_s\to D^+_s\pi^0$ relative to that of $D^{*+}_s\to D^+_s\gamma$ to be $(6.16\pm 0.43\pm 0.19)\%$. The first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic. By using the world average value of the branching fraction of $D^{*+}_s\to D^+_se^+e^-$, we determine the branching fractions of $D^{*+}_s\to D^+_s\gamma$ and $D^{*+}_s\to D^+_s\pi^0$ to be $(93.57\pm0.44\pm0.19)\%$ and $(5.76\pm0.44\pm0.19)\%$, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 3figures, 4 tables

Abstract: Using $4.7~\rm fb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data at center-of-mass energies from 4.661 to 4.951 GeV collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we observe the $X(3872)$ production process $e^{+}e^{-}\to\omega X(3872)$ for the first time. The significance is $7.8\sigma$, including both the statistical and systematic uncertainties. The $e^+e^-\to\omega X(3872)$ Born cross section and the corresponding upper limit at 90\% confidence level at each energy point are reported. The line shape of the cross section indicates that the $\omega X(3872)$ signals may be from the decays of some non-trivial structures., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: A determination of the $C\!P$-even fraction $F_+$ in the decay $D^0 \to K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-$ is presented. Using $2.93$ fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-\to\psi(3770)\to D\bar{D}$ data collected by the BESIII detector, one charm meson is reconstructed in the signal mode and the other in a $C\!P$ eigenstate or the decay $D\to K_{S, L}^0\pi^+\pi^-$. Analysis of the relative rates of these double-tagged events yields the result $F_+ = 0.730 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.021$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first model-independent measurement of $F_+$ in $D^0 \to K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-$ decays., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Using $4.5 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data samples collected at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.600 to 4.698 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measured the absolute branching fraction for the inclusive semileptonic decay $\Lambda_c^+\rightarrow Xe^+\nu_e$, where $X$ refers to any possible particle system. The branching fraction of the decay is determined to be $\mathcal{B}({\it \Lambda}^+_c\rightarrow Xe^+\nu_e)=(4.06\pm0.10_{\rm stat.}\pm0.09_{\rm syst.})\%$. Our result improves the precision of previous measurement of $\mathcal{B}({\it \Lambda}^+_c\rightarrow Xe^+\nu_e)$ by more than threefold. Using the known $\Lambda_c^+$ lifetime and the charge-averaged semileptonic decay width of nonstrange charmed mesons, we measure the ratio of inclusive semileptonic decay widths $\Gamma(\Lambda_c^+\rightarrow X e^+\nu_e)/\bar{\Gamma}(D\rightarrow Xe^+\nu_e)=1.28\pm0.05$, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Using data samples of $e^+e^-$ collisions collected with the BESIII detector at eight center-of-mass energy points between 3.49 and 3.67 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 670 pb$^{-1}$, we present the upper limits of Born cross sections and the effective form factor for the process $e^+e^-\rightarrow\Omega^{-}\bar\Omega^{+}$. A fit to the cross sections using a pQCD-derived energy dependent function shows no significant threshold effect. The upper limit on the measured effective form factor is consistent with a theoretical prediction within the uncertainty of 1$\sigma$. These results provide new experimental information on the production mechanism of $\Omega$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, consistent with paper published in Phys. Rev. D 107, 052003 (2023)

Abstract: Using data taken at 29 center-of-mass energies between 4.16 and 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of approximately 18.8 $\rm fb^{-1}$, the process $e^+e^- \to p p \bar{p} \bar{n} \pi^{-} + c.c.$ is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of $11.5\sigma$. The average Born cross sections in the energy ranges of (4.160, 4.380) GeV, (4.400, 4.600) GeV and (4.610, 4.700) GeV are measured to be $(21.5\pm5.7\pm1.2)$ fb, $(46.3\pm10.6\pm2.5)$ fb and $(59.0\pm9.4\pm3.2)$ fb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The line shapes of the $\bar{p}\bar{n}$ and $pp\pi^-$ invariant mass spectra are consistent with phase space distributions, indicating that no hexaquark or di-baryon state is observed., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures.
