Abstract Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels caused by inadequate insulin production, which subsequently leads to hyperglycemia. This study was aimed to investigate the antidiabetic potential of pyrazolobenzothiazine derivatives in silico, in vitro, and in vivo. Molecular docking of pyrazolobenzothiazine derivatives was performed against α-glucosidase and α-amylase and compounds were selected based on docking score, bonding interactions and low root mean square deviation (RMSD). Enzyme inhibition assay against α-glucosidase and α-amylase was performed in vitro using p-nitrophenyl-α-D-glucopyranoside (PNPG) and starch substrate. Synthetic compound pyrazolobenzothiazine (S1) exhibited minimal conformational changes during the 100 ns MD simulation run. S1 also revealed effective IC50 values for α-glucosidase (3.91 µM) and α-amylase (8.89 µM) and an enzyme kinetic study showed low ki (− 0.186 µM, − 1.267 µM) and ki′ (− 0.691 µM, − 1.78 µM) values with the competitive type of inhibition for both enzymes α-glucosidase and α-amylase, respectively. Moreover, studies were conducted to check the effect of the synthetic compound in a mouse model. A low necrosis rate was observed in the liver, kidney, and pancreas through histology analysis performed on mice. Compound S1 also exhibited a good biochemical profile with lower sugar level (110–115 mg/dL), increased insulin level (25–30 μM/L), and low level of cholesterol (85 mg/dL) and creatinine (0.6 mg/dL) in blood. The treated mice group also exhibited a low % of glycated haemoglobin (3%). This study concludes that S1 is a new antidiabetic-agent that helps lower blood glucose levels and minimizes the complications associated with type-II diabetes.

Introduction 18‐36% of all intracranial aneurysms are middle cerebral artery(MCA) bifurcation aneurysms. While some are much higher risk than others, they have an overall low estimated annual rupture rate of 0.36%.(1) MCA bifurcation aneurysms have been historically challenging to treat endovascularly given they often have complex morphology and wide necks. The Woven EndoBridge (WEB) is an ellipsoid embolization device designed to provide intrasaccular flow disruption along the aneurysm neck, which has been proven to be an effective method in treating a wide spectrum of wide‐necked bifurcation aneurysms. Thromboembolism and recanalization are the main concerns in treatment with the WEB device, like any aneurysm treatment approach .(2),(3) Occasionally, irregularities and secondary lobules at the base of the primary aneurysm can have persistent filling despite treatment. Methods We present a case of a right MCA bifurcation aneurysm treated by a WEB device and coil embolization. Results 48‐year‐old female with a medical history significant only for active smoking who presented with sudden onset of the worst headache of her life followed by brief loss of consciousness. No neurological evaluation was sought initially, until 2 weeks later as she continued to experience a moderate‐intensity headache associated with nausea and vomiting with frequent falls. On exam, she was alert and oriented, moving all extremities with full strength. CT head revealed an evolving acute to subacute right MCA infarction with adjacent small volume subarachnoid hemorrhage. CTA head revealed a right MCA bifurcation aneurysm measuring 6 x 6 x 7 mm with irregularity of the wall. Multifocal severe stenosis was noted in the right distal right M1 and right M2 divisions. She underwent a diagnostic subtraction angiography which confirmed an irregular right MCA bifurcation aneurysm measuring 4.3 x 4.5 x 5.7 mm (Figure 1 ‐A,B). While it was believed that the subarachnoid hemorrhage was more likely related to the recent infarct, a decision was made to treat the aneurysm given its relatively large size and irregular shape. Embolization was performed with a WEB SL 6 x 4 mm device (Figure 1: C,D ‐blue arrow). Post‐deployment angiograph showed occlusion of the aneurysm dome but persistent filling of the secondary lobule near the base of the aneurysm. Given this residual lobule filling, a decision was made to continue additional embolization with a hyper soft 3D 2 mm X 2 cm coil(Figure 1: C,D ‐ yellow arrow). Final angiography revealed complete occlusion of the aneurysm. Vasospasm of the distal M2 divisions and multiple M3 branches in the right MCA vascular territory was also noted. Therefore, she was treated with 20 mg of intra‐arterial Verapamil with improvement. She was started on Aspirin 325 mg daily. Daily transcranial dopplers were negative for vasospasm. She remained neurologically stable and was discharged home 5 days after admission ambulating independently. Conclusion With modern advances in endovascular devices, many MCA bifurcation aneurysms can be treated minimally invasively. However, there are some limitations to the WEB since every aneurysm is different and there are a finite number of sizes and shapes available for WEB. This case illustrates that adjunctive coil embolization can successfully occlude a residual secondary base lobule after WEB embolization.

Several fields, such as biological, medical, public health, agricultural sciences, etc., require circular balanced repeated measurement designs with fewer unequal number of repeated measurements than the number of treatments. Also, the availability and high cost of experimental subjects in these fields prefer the design in fewer experimental units. However, balancing the carryover effects of the treatments in minimal experimental subjects is one of the problems in this case. In this paper, several new series of minimal circular nearly strongly balanced RMDs in periods of two and three different sizes are constructed. The proposed construction of designs has high efficiency and, therefore, can save the cost of experimentations due to a fewer experimental subjects. Most of the designs are very useful because of the unavailability of strongly balanced RMDs for these combinations of parameters. A list of sets of shifts for the construction of minimal circular nearly SBRMDs has also been mentioned in the Appendix.

The Internet of medical things (IoMT) is a modern technology that is increasingly being used to provide good healthcare services. As IoMT devices are vulnerable to cyberattacks, healthcare centers and patients face privacy and security challenges. A safe IoMT environment has been used by combining blockchain (BC) technology with artificial intelligence (AI). However, the services of the systems are costly and suffer from security and privacy problems. This study aims to summarize previous research in the IoMT and discusses the roles of AI, BC, and cybersecurity in the IoMT, as well as the problems, opportunities, and directions of research in this field based on a comprehensive literature review. This review describes the integration schemes of AI, BC, and cybersecurity technologies, which can support the development of new systems based on a decentralized approach, especially in healthcare applications. This study also identifies the strengths and weaknesses of these technologies, as well as the datasets they use.

Neighbor designs are popular to control neighbor effects. Among neighbor designs, strongly balanced neighbor designs are important to estimate treatment effects and neighbor effects independently. Minimal circular strongly balanced neighbor designs (MCSBNDs) can be obtained only for odd v (number of treatments). For v even, minimal circular nearly strongly balanced neighbor designs are used which satisfied all conditions of MCSBNDs except that the treatment labeled as (v − 1) does not appear as its own neighbor. These designs can be converted directly in some other useful classes of neighbor designs. These designs are efficient to minimize the bias due to the neighbor effects.

Water drilling machines are used to drill boreholes in the ground to extract groundwater. The resources required for water drilling vary from region to region due to underground water table depth and ground soil layer. Water drilling on a hard underground soil layer requires different resources than a soft underground. The proposed study facilitates the drilling industry by selecting the region with a soft land layer and increasing the penetration rate. Furthermore, the number of days and water table depth prediction allows the drilling industry to estimate the depth of the water table and time resources to reach the water table at different locations. The classification techniques classify the region based on the soil land layer. Regression techniques are used for predicting water table depth and number of days. The experiments are performed on a borehole log dataset provided by a research organization. This study used Support Vector Machine, TabNet, and Deep Tabular models to predict the land soil layer and compare the results with our proposed Ensemble Weighted Voting Soil Layer Classifier (EWV-SLC). The performance of the classification model is evaluated using accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F1 Score. The experimental finding shows that the EWV-SLC model performs better in accuracy and F1 score than other machine learning techniques. The performance of the regression model is evaluated using Mean Square Error (MSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE),Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error(MAPE). In a days and water table depth prediction phase Support, Vector Regressor, Deep Neural Network, and TabNet Regressor are used, and compare the results with our proposed Ensemble Number of Days (E-NOD) and Ensemble Water Table depth (E-WTD) Regressor model. E-NOD and E-WTD models achieved less MAE, RMSE, and MSE than other machine learning methods.

Breast cancer covers a large area of research because of its prevalence and high frequency all over the world. This study is based on drug discovery against breast cancer from a series of imidazole derivatives. A 3D-QSAR and activity atlas model was developed by exploring the dataset computationally, using the machine learning process of Flare. The dataset of compounds was divided into active and inactive compounds according to their biological and structural similarity with the reference drug. The obtained PLS regression model provided an acceptable r2 = 0.81 and q2 = 0.51. Protein-ligand interactions of active molecules were shown by molecular docking against six potential targets, namely, TTK, HER2, GR, NUDT5, MTHFS, and NQO2. Then, toxicity risk parameters were evaluated for hit compounds. Finally, after all these screening processes, compound C10 was recognized as the best-hit compound. This study identified a new inhibitor C10 against cancer and provided evidence-based knowledge to discover more analogs.

Abstract Background Seventy-five per cent of individuals with prediabetes will eventually be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Physical activity is a cornerstone in reducing type 2 diabetes risk but can be a challenging behaviour to adopt for those living with prediabetes. Individuals with prediabetes experience difficult emotions associated with being at risk for a chronic disease, which can undermine self-regulation. Self-compassion enhances self-regulation because it mitigates difficult emotions and promotes adaptive coping. We performed a pilot randomized controlled trial to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a self-compassion informed intervention to increase physical activity for persons with prediabetes. Methods This explanatory mixed methods study tested the feasibility and acceptability of a two-arm, randomized, single-blind, actively controlled, 6-week online intervention. Using a 1:1 allocation ratio, participants (identified as people with prediabetes, low physical activity, and low self-compassion) were randomized to a self-compassion (M age = 60.22 years) or control condition (M age = 56.13 years). All participants received behaviour change education (e.g. SMART goals, action-coping planning) and either other health knowledge (control condition: e.g. sleep, benefits of water) or self-compassion training (intervention condition: practising mindfulness, writing a letter to themselves offering the same support that they would offer to a friend). The primary outcome was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of the trial. To be considered feasible, our outcomes needed to meet or surpass our pre-determined criteria (e.g. time for group formation: 14–20 participants per month). Feasibility was assessed by examining the recruitment rates, retention, adherence, fidelity, and capacity. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants to determine trial acceptability. As a secondary purpose, we examined the means on key study variables (secondary and exploratory variables; see Table 1) at all planned time points (baseline, intervention-end, 6- and 12-week follow-up) to identify if they are suitable to include in the efficacy trial (see Additional Table 3). Results Eighteen participants were screened and randomized to one of two conditions. Retention, instructor fidelity, safety, capacity, adherence to most of the study aspects, and acceptability by participants and facilitators all met the criteria for feasibility. Recruitment rate, process time, and adherence to home practice were below our criteria, and we offer ways to address these shortcomings for the efficacy trial. Conclusion The results from this study suggest that it should be feasible to deliver our intervention while highlighting the alterations to components that may be altered when delivering the efficacy trial. We outline our changes which should improve and enhance the feasibility and acceptability of our planned intervention. Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) that represent approximately 1 to 2 percent of primary gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. Owing to their rarity, very little is known about their overall epidemiology, and the prognostic factors of their pathology. The current study aimed to evaluate the independent determinants of mortality in patients diagnosed with GISTs over the past decade. Methods: Our study comprised 2374 patients diagnosed with GISTs from 2000 to 2017 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. We analyzed the baseline characteristics, and overall mortality (OM), as well as the cancer-specific mortality (CSM) of GISTs. Variables with a p value < 0.01 in the univariate Cox regression were incorporated into the multivariate Cox model, to determine the independent prognostic factors. Results: Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses of factors affecting the all-cause mortality and GIST-related mortality among US patients between 2010 and 2017 revealed a higher overall mortality in non-Hispanic Black patients (HR = 1.516, 95% CI 1.172–1.961, p = 0.002), patients aged 80+ (HR = 9.783, 95% CI 4.185–22.868, p = 0), followed by those aged 60–79 (HR = 3.408, 95% CI 1.488–7.807, p = 0.004); male patients (HR = 1.795, 95% CI 1.461–2.206, p < 0.001); patients with advanced disease with distant metastasis (HR = 3.865, 95% CI 2.977–5.019, p < 0.001), followed by cases with regional involvement via both direct extension and lymph node involvement (HR = 3.853, 95% CI 1.551–9.57, p = 0.004); and widowed patients (HR = 1.975, 95% CI 1.494–2.61, p < 0.001), followed by single patients (HR = 1.53, 95% CI 1.154–2.028, p = 0.003). The highest CSM was observed in the same groups, except widowed patients and patients aged 60–79. The highest CSM was also observed among patients that underwent chemotherapy (HR = 1.687, 95% CI 1.19–2.392, p = 0.003). Conclusion: In this updated study on the outcomes of patients with GISTs, we found that non-Hispanic Black patients, male patients, and patients older than 60 years have a higher mortality with GISTs. Furthermore, patients who have received chemotherapy have a higher GIST-specific mortality, and married patients have a lower mortality. However, we do not know to what extent these independent prognostic factors interact with each other to influence mortality. This study paves the way for future studies addressing these interactions. The results of this study may help treating clinicians to identify patient populations associated with a dismal prognosis, as those may require closer follow-up and more intensive therapy; furthermore, with married patients having a better survival rate, we hope to encourage clinicians to involve family members of the affected patients early in the disease course, as the social support might impact the prognosis.

This paper provided a new framework i.e., fifth-generation literature on suicide bombings. The latter have always been a central debate/value in warfare; however, they have taken a centre stage in asymmetric warfare. The lethality and commitment to the cause makes a suicide attacker a real danger. The Iraqi episode of Al-Qaeda used suicide bombings as a military operation, and it transferred the expertise to Taliban to fight against the U.S-led Allied Forces in Afghanistan. From there the same tactics proliferated to Pakistani Taliban who used it as a military operation against the security and civil establishments of Islamabad. Apart from the Pashtunwali Code and the strict adherence to the Deobandi School of thought, the Pashtuns of Afghanistan and Pakistan readily accepted to recruit and train suicide attackers and employed suicide bombings as a military operation. This analytical and explanatory study generally banked on secondary data, normally gathered from the academic sources; however, primary data was also used, and an interview of an anonymous security official was conducted as well. This paper is a concentrated effort to probe and investigate the advent of suicide bombings in Afghanistan and Pakistan and to examine that how and why the Pashtuns used it as a military operation to achieve their desired objectives. The article found that the selection and indoctrination of a suicide bomber involves almost eight stages.

In this article, four new families named as Weibull extended exponentiated-X (WEE-X), Lomax extended exponentiated-X (LEE-X), Logistic extended exponentiated-X (LGCEE-X), and Burr III extended exponentiated-X (BIIIEE-X) with their quantile functions are proposed. The expressions for distribution function and density function of BIIIEE-X family are written in terms of linear combinations of the exponentiated densities based to parent model. New models, i.e., Weibul extended exponentiated Weibull (WEEW), Lomax extended exponentiated Weibull (LEEW), Logistic extended exponentiated Weibull (LGCEEW), and Burr III extended exponentiated-Weibull (BIIIEEW) distributions are derived, were plotted for functions of probability density and hazard rate at different levels of parameters. Some mathematical properties of the BIIIEEW model are disclosed. The maximum likelihood method for the BIIIEEW model are described. Numerical applications of the BIIIEEW model to disease of cancer datasets are provided.

The application of green synthesis for silver nanoparticles in nanomedicine has experienced significant growth. Strobilanthes glutinosus, a plant primarily located in the Himalayas, remains largely unexplored. Considering the biomedical value of S. glutinosus, phytochemicals from this plant were used for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized from aqueous extract of root and leaves of Strobilanthes glutinosus. The synthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized using UV–Vis spectrophotometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of plants were determined and compared with nanoparticles. The biomedical efficacy of plant extracts and silver nanoparticles was assessed using antioxidant and antibacterial assays. The UV–Vis spectra of leaf- and root-extract-mediated AgNPs showed characteristic peaks at 428 nm and 429 nm, respectively. TEM images revealed the polycrystalline and spherical shapes of leaf- and root-extract-mediated AgNPs with size ranges of 15–60 nm and 20–52 nm, respectively. FTIR findings shown the involvement of phytochemicals of root and leaf extracts in the reduction of silver ions into silver nanoparticles. The crystalline face-centered cubic structure of nanoparticles is depicted by the XRD spectra of leaf and root AgNPs. The plant has an ample amount of total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC), which enhance the scavenging activity of plant samples and their respective AgNPs. Leaf and root AgNPs have also shown good antibacterial activity, which may enhance the medicinal value of AgNPs.

Silver nanowires (AgNWs) with ultrahigh purity and high yield were successfully synthesized by employing a modified facile polyol method using PVP as a capping and stabilizing agent. The reaction was carried out at a moderate temperature of 160 °C under mild stirring for about 3 h. The prepared AgNWs exhibited parallel alignment on a large scale and were characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and PL spectroscopy. The luminescent AgNWs exhibited red emission, which was accredited to deep holes. The SEM results confirmed the formation of AgNWs of 3.3 to 4.7 µm in length with an average diameter of about 86 nm, that is, the aspect ratio values of the AgNWs exceeded 45. An ink consisting of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and AgNWs was transferred to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films by simple mechanical pressing. The PET films retained transparency and flexibility after the ink coating. The maximum transmittance value of as-prepared PET films in the visible region was estimated to be about 92.5% with a sheet resistance value of ca. 20 Ω/sq. This makes the films a potential substitute to commonly used expensive indium tin oxide (ITO) in the field of flexible optoelectronics.

Impaired diabetic wounds are serious pathophysiological complications associated with persistent microbial infections including failure in the closure of wounds, and the cause of a high frequency of lower limb amputations. The healing of diabetic wounds is attenuated due to the lack of secretion of growth factors, prolonged inflammation, and/or inhibition of angiogenic activity. Diabetic wound healing can be enhanced by supplying nitric oxide (NO) endogenously or exogenously. NO produced inside the cells by endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) naturally aids wound healing through its beneficial vasculogenic effects. However, during hyperglycemia, the activity of eNOS is affected, and thus there becomes an utmost need for the topical supply of NO from exogenous sources. Thus, NO-donors that can release NO are loaded into wound healing patches or wound coverage matrices to treat diabetic wounds. The burst release of NO from its donors is prevented by encapsulating them in polymeric hydrogels or nanoparticles for supplying NO for an extended duration of time to the diabetic wounds. In this article, we review the etiology of diabetic wounds, wound healing strategies, and the role of NO in the wound healing process. We further discuss the challenges faced in translating NO-donors as a clinically viable nanomedicine strategy for the treatment of diabetic wounds with a focus on the use of biomaterials for the encapsulation and in vivo controlled delivery of NO-donors.

The study of hydrological characteristics has a vital role in designing, planning, and managing water resources. The selection of appropriate probability distributions and methods of estimations are basic elements in hydrology analyses. In this article, a new family named the ‘exponentiated power alpha index generalized’ (EPAIG)-G is proposed to develop several new distributions. Using this proposed family, we developed a new model, called the EPAIG-exponential (EPAIG-E). A few structural properties of the EPAIG-G were obtained. The EPAIG-E parameters were estimated through the method of maximum likelihood (MML). The study of the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) was produced for the EPAIG-E. The model performance is illustrated using real data.

Equity and redress, in and through education, are fundamental commitments of the new South African democratic government that ensued in 1994 after a brutal and protracted history of colonial and apartheid segregation and oppression denied the majority black population the fundamental right to equitable and quality education. A raft of ambitious and far-reaching policies were put in place to achieve these laudable goals. Yet more than 26 years after the ending of colonial and apartheid rule, the South African education system, and society in general, remain, far from equal – made apparent by the current COVID-19 pandemic. In this paper we take a critical (re)look at South African education governance and funding policies, considering why the South African Schools Acts (SASA) and the National Norms and Standards for School Funding (NNSSF), first promulgated in 1997 and 1998 and subsequently amended, have not delivered as expected on the promises of equity, redistribution and redress. The paper advances conceptual flaws, operational failures and implementation naivety as to why these promises have not been realised, advocating for an alternative social justice model for school governance and funding.

The competitive nature of business today requires the knowledge to be able to manipulate process levels in a predictable fashion and to reduce process variation (quality control). This goal can be achieved through the use of experimentation to identify and confirm the effects of the process variables. Therefore, design of experiments should be an integral part of process management. Experimental designs such as treatment balanced, neighbor balanced and balanced repeated measurements designs, have been extensively used in different fields, especially in business and commerce. Different methods have been used for their construction but method of cyclic shifts is the easiest one. This paper provides the overview, how this method has been used for the construction of the useful designs.

ObjectivesThe objectives of the HOLISTIC Cohort Study are to establish a prospective cohort study covering a period of three years that characterizes the health of students within and across health professional education programs at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, implement an interprofessional student research team, and generate a meaningful dataset that is used to inform initiatives that improve student health. This report describes the protocol of the HOLISTIC Cohort Study, including survey development, recruitment strategy, and data management and analysis.MethodsAn interprofessional student research team has been organized with the goal of providing continuous assessment of study design and implementation across the seven health science colleges (applied health sciences, dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social work) at the University of Illinois Chicago in Chicago, IL. To be eligible to participate in the HOLISTIC Cohort Study, students are required to be 1) age 18 years or older; 2) enrolled full- or part-time in one or more of UIC's seven health science colleges; and 3) enrolled in a program that prepares its graduates to enter a healthcare profession. The study protocol includes a series of three recruitment waves (Spring 2021 [April 14, 2021, to May 5, 2021; completed], Spring 2022, Spring 2023). In the first recruitment wave, eligible students were sent an invitation via electronic mail (e-mail) to complete an online survey. The online survey was based on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2019 survey and the 2014 World Health Organization Report of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts Working Group Vaccine Hesitancy Scale. Electronic informed consent and study data are collected and managed using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) tools. This study utilizes convenience sampling from all seven health science colleges at UIC with a target recruitment total of 2,000 participants.Discussion and future directionsA total of 555 students across all seven health science colleges (10.8% of 5,118 students who were invited; 27.6% of target sample size) enrolled in the cohort during the first recruitment wave. The pilot data establishes the feasibility of the study during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adaptations to overcome barriers to study implementation, including the use of remote, rather than in-person, study meetings, staff training, and participant recruitment are discussed. For the second and third waves of recruitment, the student research team will seek institutional review board (IRB) approval to implement additional enrollment strategies that are tailored to each health science college, such as online newsletters, virtual townhalls, flyers on bulletin boards near classrooms tailored to each health science college.

Management of non-healing and slow to heal diabetic wounds is a major concern in healthcare across the world. Numerous techniques have been investigated to solve the issue of delayed wound healing, though, mostly unable to promote complete healing of diabetic wounds due to the lack of proper cell proliferation, poor cell-cell communication, and higher chances of wound infections. These challenges can be minimized by using hydrogel based wound healing patches loaded with bioactive agents. Gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) has been proven to be a highly cell friendly, cell adhesive, and inexpensive biopolymer for various tissue engineering and wound healing applications. In this study, S-Nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), a nitric oxide (NO) donor, was incorporated in a highly porous GelMA hydrogel patch to improve cell proliferation, facilitate rapid cell migration, and enhance diabetic wound healing. We adopted a visible light crosslinking method to fabricate this highly porous biodegradable but relatively stable patch. Developed patches were characterized for morphology, NO release, cell proliferation and migration, and diabetic wound healing in a rat model. The obtained results indicate that SNAP loaded visible light crosslinked GelMA hydrogel patches can be highly effective in promoting diabetic wound healing.

Vaccine hesitancy has been observed around the world, but there is a paucity of data among a broad range of U.S. health professional students. The goal of this report is to present findings about COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among a cross-section of U.S. health professional students and determine if hesitancy varies by demographic characteristics, health science college, and other factors. A cross-sectional analysis of HOLISTIC Cohort Study participants enrolled from April 14 2021 to May 5 2021 at seven health sciences colleges in the University of Illinois Chicago was used. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were used to evaluate vaccine hesitancy items and identify domains. Among 555 health professional students, three domains (perceived benefit, trustworthiness, and risk) contribute to vaccine hesitancy. Significant differences were observed in the domains among students of different races as well as vaccination history. Compared to students in the College of Medicine, students in the Colleges of Applied Health Science (OR 0.43; CI [0.19–0.96]), Pharmacy (OR 0.38; CI [0.17–0.87]), Nursing (OR 0.35; CI [0.16–0.78]), and Social Work (OR 0.30; CI [0.11–0.78]) reported lower perceived benefit. Compared to students in the College of Medicine, students in the College of Applied Health Sciences (OR 0.39; CI [0.17–0.94]), Dentistry (OR 0.27; CI [0.10–0.76]), Nursing (OR 0.38; CI [0.16–0.94]), and Social work (OR 0.31; CI [0.11–0.86]) reported more trustworthiness and more concerns about risk (OR 2.80; CI [1.15–6.81] for College of Applied Health Sciences, OR 9.12; CI [2.80–29.75] for Dentistry, OR 3.77; CI [1.47–9.65] for Nursing, OR 3.14; CI [1.02–9.67] for Social Work). Our findings suggest the need for a tailored vaccination strategy among different subgroups of health professional students.

Here, we propose a new generalized exponential extended exponentiated (NGE3) family of distributions. Some statistical properties of proposed family are gained. The most extreme probability method, maximum likelihood (ML), is utilized for parameter estimation. We explore an exceptional model called NGE3-Exponential (NGE3E). NGE3E is estimated with ML, and the performance of estimators is demonstrated by utilizing a simulation. Moreover, two applications are given to show the significance and adaptability of the proposed model in comparison to some generalized models (GMs).

Social workers are often tasked to engage with families where domestic violence is occurring. This challenging task can be exacerbated by factors such as cultural and religious influences. As a means to increase the understanding of these important factors, an extensive literature review of current material on Islam, Muslims and domestic violence was conducted. This literature was divided into several themes to include: Islam and Muslims; Islam, marriage and family; Islam and domestic violence; special circumstances of Muslim victims of domestic violence; why Muslim women stay; the September 11th impact on domestic violence in Muslim families in the US; and services available to these families. Implications include increased knowledge acquisition and cultural awareness as well as a call for more knowledge regarding the relationship between the intersections of factors such as Islam, culture, immigration and socioeconomic status, and the competent assessment of service needs and successful service delivery.

Historically, based on shared values of culture and religion, Pakistan's relations with Saudi Arabia have become increasingly complex over time. This has occurred in the backdrop of important geopolitical and economic shifts in the region, leading to a new dynamic equilibrium in the Pak-Saudi bilateral ties. Strong relations with Riyadh have become a crucial element of Pakistan's overall foreign policy, given the latter's intermittent economic support by the former, which underscores the significance of the Kingdom; however, deepening Indo-Saudi ties can also not be overlooked or underestimated. This paper gives an overview of ever-evolving Pak-Saudi ties, while taking into consideration current dynamics of the Kingdom's role in the Middle East and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries as well as in the South Asian region.

Aim: The assessment of tumor response to therapy is of critical importance as it permits for a prospective end point evaluation and provides a guide to clinicians for making future treatment decisions. However, current practices in early evaluation of chemotherapy are insufficient. Amantadine is a substrate for SSAT-1. The present pilot study tests the hypothesis that SSAT-1 activity within the tumor, as measured by plasma acetylamantadine concentrations, can be used to monitor patient response to therapy. Results: In cases with evidence of disease response, there was a reduction in the plasma acetylamantadine concentration at 4 h by approximately 32%. There was a mean increase of approximately 34% at the 4 h collection in the nonresponders. Conclusion: Although large-scale studies are required these findings suggest that the amantadine test could allow for determination of the efficacy of therapeutic interventions earlier, providing an effective test to assess response to treatment and for better management of patients.

Here, a new method is recommended to characterize a new continuous distribution class, named the generalized alpha exponent power family of distributions (GAEPFDs). A particular sub-model is presented for exemplifying the objective. The basic statistical properties, such as ordinary moments, the probability weighted moments, mode, quantile, order statistics, entropy measures, and moment generating functions, etc., were explored. To gauge the GAEPPRD parameters, the ML technique was utilized. The estimator behaviour was studied by a Monte Carlo simulation study (MCSS). The effectiveness of GAEPFDs was demonstrated observationally through lifetime data. The applications show that GAEPFDs can offer preferable results over other competitive models.

Single-cell RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) techniques can perform analysis of transcriptome at the single-cell level and possess an unprecedented potential for exploring signatures involved in tumor development and progression. These techniques can perform sequence analysis of transcripts with a better resolution that could increase understanding of the cellular diversity found in the tumor microenvironment and how the cells interact with each other in complex heterogeneous cancerous tissues. Identifying the changes occurring in the genome and transcriptome in the spatial context is considered to increase knowledge of molecular factors fueling cancers. It may help develop better monitoring strategies and innovative approaches for cancer treatment. Recently, there has been a growing trend in the integration of RNA-seq techniques with contemporary omics technologies to study the tumor microenvironment. There has been a realization that this area of research has a huge scope of application in translational research. This review article presents an overview of various types of single-cell RNA-seq techniques used currently for analysis of cancer tissues, their pros and cons in bulk profiling of transcriptome, and recent advances in the techniques in exploring heterogeneity of various types of cancer tissues. Furthermore, we have highlighted the integration of single-cell RNA-seq techniques with other omics technologies for analysis of transcriptome in their spatial context, which is considered to revolutionize the understanding of tumor microenvironment.

Circular regular graph designs play an important role in the design of experiments where most of the balanced incomplete block designs require a large number of blocks. In this article, circular regular graph designs are constructed in blocks of size four through cyclic shifts. Without studying the complete design, some standard properties of the designs can be observed only through the sets of shifts. Therefore, method of cyclic shifts has an edge over existing methods.

The five-year survival rate of lung cancer patients is very low, mainly because most newly diagnosed patients present with locally advanced or metastatic disease. Therefore, early diagnosis is key to the successful treatment and management of lung cancer. Unfortunately, early detection methods of lung cancer are not ideal. In this brief review, we described early detection methods such as chest X-rays followed by bronchoscopy, sputum analysis followed by cytological analysis, and low-dose computed tomography (LDCT). In addition, we discussed the potential of metabolomic fingerprinting, compared to that of other biomarkers, including molecular targets, as a low-cost, high-throughput blood-based test that is both feasible and affordable for early-stage lung cancer screening of at-risk populations. Accordingly, we proposed a paradigm shift to metabolomics as an alternative to molecular and proteomic-based markers in lung cancer screening, which will enable blood-based routine testing and be accessible to those patients at the highest risk for lung cancer.

Antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) micro thin-film have been received great interest as an absorbing layer for solar cell technology. In this study, to explore its further potential, electronic and optical properties of Sb2S3 simulated nano-thin film are investigated by the first-principles approach. To do so, the highly accurate full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method framed within density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in the WIEN2k package is employed. The films are simulated in the [0 0 1] direction using the supercell method with a vacuum along z-direction so that slab and periodic images can be treated independently. From our calculations, indirect band gap energy values of Sb2S3 for various slabs are found to be 0.568, 0.596 and 0.609 eV for 1, 2 and 4 slabs respectively. Moreover, optical properties comprising of real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric function, absorption coefficient, refractive index are also investigated to understand the optical behavior of the obtained simulated Sb2S3 thin films. From the analysis of their optical properties, it is clearly seen that Sb2S3 thin films have good values for optical absorption parameters in the visible and ultraviolet wavelength range, showing the aptness of antimony sulphide thins films for versatile optoelectronic applications as a base material. Neighbor balanced designs are useful to balance out the neighbor effects in field of agriculture, serology, agro forestry, industry, etc. In most of the agriculture experiments blocks are formed in a line and therefore, neighbor balanced designs are required in linear blocks. In this article some classes of first order neighbor balanced designs are presented in linear blocks of size three and four. A method to construct the second order neighbor balanced designs through two minimal first order neighbor balanced designs in linear binary blocks of size three is also developed here. Abstract Background We examined whether neighborhood-, friend-, and family- norms and social support for consumption and purchase of fruits and vegetables (F&V) were associated with F&V intake among low-income residents in subsidized housing communities. We examined baseline data from a study ancillary to the Live Well/Viva Bien intervention. Participants included 290 residents in four low-income subsidized housing sites who were ≥ 18 years of age, English and/or Spanish speaking, and without medical conditions that prevented consumption of F&V. Methods Linear regression models examined associations of norms and social support with F&V intake after adjustments for sociodemographic characteristics. Results In the analysis, neighborhood social support for F&V was associated with a 0.31 cup increase in F&V intake (95% CI = 0.05, 0.57). The family norm for eating F&V and family social support for eating F&V were associated with a 0.32 cup (95% CI = 0.13, 0.52) and 0.42 cup (95% CI = 0.19, 0.64) increase in F&V intake, respectively. Conclusions To our knowledge, no other studies have examined neighborhood, family, and peer norms and social support simultaneously and in relation to F&V intake. These findings may inform neighborhood interventions and community-level policies to reduce neighborhood disparities in F&V consumption.

Neighbor balanced designs are robust to neighbor effects, therefore, these designs are used to balance out the neighbor effects. If a large number of experimental material is required for combinatorial neighbor balance then partially neighbor balanced designs should be recommended. Abnormality in glucose homeostasis due to hyperglycemia or insulin resistance is the hallmark of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These metabolic abnormalities in T2DM lead to cellular dysfunction and the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure. New antihyperglycemic agents including glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and the sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have been shown to attenuate endothelial dysfunction at the cellular level. In addition, they improved cardiovascular safety by exhibiting cardioprotective effects. The mechanism by which these drugs exert their cardioprotective effects is unknown, although recent studies have shown that cardiovascular homeostasis occurs through the interplay of the sodium–hydrogen exchangers (NHE), specifically NHE1 and NHE3, with SGLT2i. Another theoretical explanation for the cardioprotective effects of SGLT2i is through natriuresis by the kidney. This theory highlights the possible involvement of renal NHE transporters in the management of heart failure. This review outlines the possible mechanisms responsible for causing diabetic cardiomyopathy and discusses the interaction between NHE and SGLT2i in cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract Theoretical simulations were designed by first principles approach of density functional theory to investigate the structural and optoelectronic properties of different structural classes of perylene; isolated perylene, diindeno[1,2,3-cd:1′,2′,3′-lm]perylene (DIP) molecule and DIP molecular crystal. The presence of molecular interactions in DIP crystal proved its structure-dependent behaviours. The herringbone molecular arrangement of DIP crystal has influenced the electronic properties by triggering the intermolecular interactions that reduced the energy gaps between HOMO and LUMO of the crystal. Strong hybridization resulting from dense charges population near zero Fermi energy has pushed valence band maxima in the density of states of all perylene structures to higher energies. Under small energy input, charges are transferred continuously as observed in the spectra of conductivity and dielectric. The existence of strong absorption intensities are consistent with the former works and supported by the obtained polarized reflectivity and loss spectra.

The article examines the problems and prospects of foreign direct investment (FDI)-based organizations in Bangladesh. The article applied a mixture of statistical tools and techniques, including a stratified random sampling and a survey questionnaire to collect relevant data. The sampling frame and sample size were based on the organizations involved in FDI-based businesses in Bangladesh. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to examine the structure and pattern of the data. Ordinal logistic regression and odds ratio were applied as well. Role of the Board of Investment along with economic freedom and the foreign investment act emerged as the most statistically significant factors which impact patterns of FDI in the country.

Background: The prevalence of T2DM is around 7-10%. Control of diabetes and factors influencing it in third world countries need to be clearly defined as most of the people have poor glycemic control. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted and purposive sampling was done to collect data for 5 months. A total of 766 type 2 diabetic patients were enrolled who visited SiDER (Sakina Institute of Diabetes and Endocrine Research Center) at Shalamar Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan. Only pre-diagnosed diabetic subjects with a random blood glucose of more than 200mg/dl at two occasions and fasting blood glucose levels more than 126mg/dl were included in the study. Variables like Body Mass Index (BMI), Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) were recorded. The data was analyzed by SPSS 22 version. Results: A total of 766 diabetics were recruited in the study out of which 40.3% were male and 59.7% were females. The mean age was 48.72±10.43 years. Out of these 53.39% were obese, 32.64% were overweight and only 13.97% had a normal body mass index BMI). HbA1c levels in the sample population showed that only 13.05% had very healthy control i.e. 7% or less. There was a positive co-relation between Body Mass Indexand glycemic control. However there was no statistically significant relation between Basal Metabolic Rateand glycemic control. Conclusion: People with high Body Mass Index were found to have suboptimal glycemic control. It was also observed that higher percentage of diabetic patients fall in age group of 41-55 years. More powerful studies are needed to establish a relation between glycated hemoglobin and Basal Metabolic Rate.

Diabetes is becoming a global epidemic. Type1 diabetes (T1DM) accounts for 3-5% of all the diabetics. As T1DM is diagnosed in childhood and adolescence, it is associated with more complications because of longer life span of individuals with this condition. The main objective of the study was to find out attitudes of people with type 1 diabetes especially with regards to their follow up. A cross-sectional study was planned and a total of 97 people with type 1 diabetes were included for a period of one year. To analyze the data SPSS 20.0 version was used. Results showed that out of 97 people, 48 (49.5%) were male and 49 (50.5%) were female. The mean age of total type 1 diabetics were 17.03±6.54 years. Mean glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was 10.59±3.09. The results revealed that 45% of people showed positive attitude and 55% showed negative behavior towards follow-up. It was concluded that overall follow up of people with type 1 diabetes was poor. It was observed that they wanted a complete cure and this contribute to missed follow up.

Syzygium cumini (S. cumini) is an evergreen tropical plant that is well recognized for its therapeutic potential of common diseases. In this study, the therapeutic potential and biomedical application of S. cumini are assessed in vitro and in vivo to find its effectiveness for different complications. The methanolic crude extract of S. cumini leaves were screened for total phenolic and flavonoid content. In vitro, the DPPH scavenging assay, XTT assay, prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin time were used to assess antioxidant, cytoprotective and thrombolytic activity of the S. cumini extract, respectively. The anti-inflammatory potential and the analgesic activity of the S. cumini extract were analyzed in rabbits by the Carrageenan induced paw edema method and the writhing method, respectively. Phytochemical analysis showed the presence of considerable amounts of total phenolic (369.75 ± 17.9 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (75.8 ± 5.3 mgRE/g) content in the S. cumini extract. The DPPH assay demonstrated a higher antioxidant potential (IC-50 value of 133 μg/ml), which was comparable to the IC-50 of ascorbic acid (122.4 μg/ml). Moreover, the S. cumini extract showed a dose dependent cytoprotective effect against H2O2 treated bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs). Fruit and vegetable diets rich in phenolic compounds reduce the risk of various cancers and offer multiple other health benefits due to their bioactivity and powerful antioxidant properties. However, the human health benefits of most phenolic compounds are restricted due to their limited aqueous solubility, low absorption, restricted passive cellular efflux, and poor gastrointestinal stability. Nanotechnology has been used to deliver various therapeutic drugs to specific targets overcoming many of the limitations of direct treatments. This study was designed to develop poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoencapsulated phenolic-rich extracts from Callistemon citrinus and berberine and to evaluate their effectiveness against extremely invasive MDA-MB 231, moderately invasive MCF-10A, and minimally invasive MCF-7 breast cancers. We have achieved about 80% encapsulation of phenolics from C. citrinus. Most encapsulated nanoparticles were polygonal with particles sizes of 200 to 250 nm. Release of phenolics from encapsulation during storage was biphasic during the first week and then levelled off thereafter. Nanoencapsulated phenolics from C. citrinus extract, berberine, and combination of both enhanced their bioactivity against the three breast cancer cell lines by nearly 2-fold. Growth inhibition of cells was a linear curve relative to phenolic concentration, with a maximum inhibition of nearly 100% at 0.1 mg/ml compared to control.

Pulpit and Masjid play very pivotal and productive role in a Muslim society. It not only educates and guides Muslims in religious matters as well shapes the social attitude and role of Muslims. Moreover, it is evident by the history that Islamic State was run by the Head of the State from Masjid. Unfortunately, pulpit and Masjid have been losing sense of their actual responsibility as an agent of social cohesion, integration and reformation. The paper is an attempt of studying the current role of pulpit and Masjid regarding religious education and training, exploring the factors that have been hampering the way of realizing the dream of social reformation in contemporary Pashtun society by not allowing pulpit and Masjid to play its due role in this respect and suggesting feasible recommendation for coping with the issue. The study is based on primary data that was collected through questionnaire in District Bannu and Lakki Marwat.

COVID-19 is a global pandemic with uncertain death rates. We examined county-level population morality rates (per 100,000) and case fatality rates by US region and rural-urban classification, while controlling for demographic, socioeconomic, and hospital variables. We found that population mortality rates and case fatality rates were significantly different across region, rural-urban classification, and their interaction. All significant comparisons had p < 0.001. Northeast counties had the highest population mortality rates (27.4) but had similar case fatality rates (5.9%) compared to other regions except the Southeast, which had significantly lower rates (4.1%). Population mortality rates were highest in urban counties but conversely, case fatality rates were highest in rural counties. Death rates in the Northeast were driven by urban areas (e.g., small, East Coast states), while case fatality rates tended to be highest in the most rural counties for all regions, especially the Southwest. However, on further inspection, high case fatality rate percentages in the Southwest, as well as in overall US counties, were driven by a low case number. This makes it hard to distinguish genuinely higher mortality or an artifact of a small sample size. In summary, coronavirus deaths are not homogenous across the United States but instead vary by region and population and highlight the importance of fine-scale analysis.

Cellulases are a set of lignocellulolytic enzymes, capable of producing eco-friendly low-cost renewable bioethanol. However, low stability and hydrolytic activity limit their wide-scale applicability at the industrial scale. In this work, we report the domain engineering of endoglucanase (cel6A) of Thermobifida fusca to improve their catalytic activity and thermal stability. Later, enzymatic activity and thermostability of the most efficient variant named as cel6A.CBC was analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations. This variant demonstrated profound activity against soluble and insoluble cellulosic substrates like filter paper, alkali-treated bagasse, regenerated amorphous cellulose (RAC), and bacterial microcrystalline cellulose. The variant cel6A.CBC showed the highest catalysis of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and other related insoluble substrates at a pH of 6.0 and a temperature of 60 °C. Furthermore, a sound rationale was observed between experimental findings and molecular modeling of cel6A.CBC which revealed thermostability of cel6A.CBC at 26.85, 60.85, and 74.85 °C as well as structural flexibility at 126.85 °C. Therefore, a thermostable derivative of cel6A engineered in the present work has enhanced biological performance and can be a useful construct for the mass production of bioethanol from plant biomass.

The rampant spread of COVID-19 and the worldwide prevalence of infected cases demand a rapid, simple, and cost-effective Point of Care Test (PoCT) for the accurate diagnosis of this pandemic. The most common molecular tests approved by regulatory bodies across the world for COVID-19 diagnosis are based on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). While PCR-based tests are highly sensitive, specific, and remarkably reliable, they have many limitations ranging from the requirement of sophisticated laboratories, need of skilled personnel, use of complex protocol, long wait times for results, and an overall high cost per test. These limitations have inspired researchers to search for alternative diagnostic methods that are fast, economical, and executable in low-resource laboratory settings. The discovery of Loop-mediated isothermal Amplification (LAMP) has provided a reliable substitute platform for the accurate detection of low copy number nucleic acids in the diagnosis of several viral diseases, including epidemics like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). At present, a cocktail of LAMP assay reagents along with reverse transcriptase enzyme (Reverse Transcription LAMP, RT-LAMP) can be a robust solution for the rapid and cost-effective diagnosis for COVID-19, particularly in developing, and low-income countries. In summary, the development of RT-LAMP based diagnostic tools in a paper/strip format or the integration of this method into a microfluidic platform such as a Lab-on-a-chip may revolutionize the concept of PoCT for COVID-19 diagnosis. This review discusses the principle, technology and past research underpinning the success for using this method for diagnosing MERS and SARS, in addition to ongoing research, and the prominent prospect of RT-LAMP in the context of COVID-19 diagnosis.

The objective of this research is to use metabolomic techniques to discover and validate plasma metabolite biomarkers for the diagnosis of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study included plasma samples from 156 patients with biopsy-confirmed NSCLC along with age and gender-matched plasma samples from 60 healthy controls. A fully quantitative targeted mass spectrometry (MS) analysis (targeting 138 metabolites) was performed on all samples. The sample set was split into a discovery set and validation set. Metabolite concentration data, clinical data, and smoking history were used to determine optimal sets of biomarkers and optimal regression models for identifying different stages of NSCLC using the discovery sets. The same biomarkers and regression models were used and assessed on the validation models. Univariate and multivariate statistical analysis identified β-hydroxybutyric acid, LysoPC 20:3, PC ae C40:6, citric acid, and fumaric acid as being significantly different between healthy controls and stage I/II NSCLC. Robust predictive models with areas under the curve (AUC) > 0.9 were developed and validated using these metabolites and other, easily measured clinical data for detecting different stages of NSCLC. This study successfully identified and validated a simple, high-performing, metabolite-based test for detecting early stage (I/II) NSCLC patients in plasma. While promising, further validation on larger and more diverse cohorts is still required.
