Although the primary objective of watching these shows is entertainment, acquiring medical knowledge is a passive by-product. Surgical procedures constitute a large part of the storyline of these shows. This could either serve as a source of medical knowledge or provide false information, the effect being especially important in individuals with no prior medical exposure. This study assesses the impact medical TV shows can have on the surgical knowledge of non-healthcare students and the difference in knowledge between different demographic groups (among those with relatives in the medical community and those without).Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the non-healthcare students of Lahore, Pakistan. A self-administered questionnaire was used containing socio-demographic factors (age, gender, educational discipline), history, and hours of medical TV shows watched. It also contained ten questions each with a score of 1 to assess surgical knowledge. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.26.Results: Among the 1097 respondents, 450 (41%) had a history of watching medical TV shows. The majority, 319 (29.1%), had seen these shows for < 24 hours. The mean score of all respondents was 5.79 out of a maximum score of 10. Respondents with a history of watching medical TV shows were more knowledgeable than those who did not (p < 0.001). Similarly, respondents with a history of watching more hours of medical TV shows were more knowledgeable than those who watched for a lesser number of hours (p < 0.001). Respondents with relatives in the healthcare profession were also more knowledgeable than those without (p = 0.049).Conclusion: If properly developed, while maintaining their primary entertainment value, medical TV shows can also be used as efficient learning tools. Abstract

Since 2009, the Nigerian military has engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Boko Haram and other extremists groups in Northern Nigeria, making extensive use of airpower. In such operations, the seeming casual and indiscriminate airstrikes have produced unfortunate scale of collateral damage to both civilians and its own personnel. This paper examines Nigeria's recurring mis-targeted airstrikes against the backdrop of the country's protracted and problematic COIN operations. The paper argues that such incidents are not necessarily 'a mistake' or 'a mishap', but a reflection of the limitations of airpower capabilities. Going forward, Nigeria's endeavours at countering insurgency and allied threats need to be systematically repositioned in a manner that guarantees optimal operational efficiency and precision. This requires improvements in combat techniques and technology as well as in command and intelligence capabilities of the forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The discharge of heavy metal ions into water resources as a result of human activities has become a global issue. Contamination with heavy metal ions poses a major threat to the environment and human health. Therefore, there is a dire need to probe the presence of heavy metal ions in a more selective, facile, quick, cost-effective and sensitive way. Conventional sensors are being utilized to sense heavy metal ions; however, various challenges and limitations like interference, overlapping of oxidation potential, selectivity and sensitivity are associated with them that limit their in-field applicability. Hence, nanomaterial based chemical sensors have emerged as an alternative substitute and are extensively employed for the detection of heavy metal ions as a potent analytical tool. The incorporation of nanomaterials in sensors increases their sensitivity, selectivity, portability, on-site detection capability and device performance. Nanomaterial based electrodes exhibit enhanced performance because surface of electrode at nano-scale level offers high catalytic potential, large active surface area and high conductivity. Therefore, this review addresses the recent progress on chemical sensors based on different nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal nanoparticles, graphene, carbon quantum dots and nanocomposites for sensing heavy metals ions using different sensing approaches. Furthermore, various types of optical sensors such as fluorescence, luminescence and colorimetry sensors have been presented in detail.

Abstract

In this article a new method is introduced to give weighted estimations of the differences of cyclic refinements of Jensen functionals. We utilize weighted form of Hermite–Hadamard (HH) inequality along with the approximations of Montgomery two- and one-point formulae with Peano type kernel along with the consequences of the n -times differentiable convex functions. As a result, we present new upper and lower bounds that are also verified with concrete examples to show the correctness of the bounds obtained for special cases. As a result, we provide estimations in terms of cyclic power means. We also improvise our results to give new uniform estimations for useful distance functions in information theory. Finally, some estimations of Zipf and Hybrid Zipf law are provided as well. • Provide bounds for cyclic jensen inequality via HH inequality and Montgomery identity. • We provide specific examples to show the correctness of obtained bounds. • We provide results for power means and quasi-arithmetic means. • We give applications in information theory. • Finally, we provide connections between Zipf and Hybrid Zipf-Mandelbrot entropies. Abstract

In order to satisfy the water demand of the continuously growing population, it is essential to provide an adequate quantity of water through a well-designed network of pipes in Dutse Metropolis of Jigawa State, Nigeria. Insufficient network coverage in commensurate with the rapid infrastructural development and inadequate supply of water to Dutse Metropolis has, over the years, caused hardship to people in the town. Presently, the system produces a total of 1,801,728l/d against the current demand of 7,793,760 l/d indicating a gross deficiency of up to 76.9%. This study employed EPANET 2.0 to conduct hydraulic analysis of water distribution in Dutse Metropolis with a view to propose improvement measures. Results indicated that water coverage in the present network can only reach 70.45% of the town for only 2 hours at the desired pressure head. The water demand of the town was projected to 2026 and found to be 9,975,960 l/d. The network was re-designed to meet the future demands and results indicated that the new network can supply water for an extended period of 15 hours with 95% of the area having pressure head varying from 25-65 m and flow above the minimum recommended value of 0.3 l/s. The proposed pipe reticulation is estimated to cost N1,207,892,686. The outcome of the study wasrecommended to the Government for strategic planning and implementation application.

26. Isolation, identification and sensitivity of Mannheimia haemolytica from Ewes udder with clinical mastitis.

Abstract

The current study aims to isolate and identify M. haemolytica from ewes with clinical mastitis using conventional techniques with comparative study to their resistance to several types of antibiotics for the isolated bacteria from udder. The study was carried out in different regions of Nineveh governorate. Two Hundred sixty-six samples (133 milk samples and 133 udder skin swabs) were collected During December 2020, after the clinical examinations of the flocks. The samples were put in test tubes containing Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Broth; then transferred into the Veterinary Public Health Laboratory, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Mosul for different bacteriological, biochemical examination and sensitivity tests. The results showed that there is a matching between bacterial isolation ratios of milk and udder skin swabs of sheep affected by clinical mastitis at 51.12%. The results also showed a difference in the sensitivity test between M. haemolytica isolated from milk and skin swabs. It can be concluded that, the improper and indiscriminate use of veterinary medicines is one of the most important causes for the increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics in treated cases without consulting a veterinarian. Abstract

The study was designed to assess the effects of periphyton grown on different substrates on water quality and production of major carps cultured in zero water exchange system. Three experimental treatments included; T1 (Control): without substrate, T2: using PVC pipes substrates, T3, using Bamboo poles substrates. Fish seed of Labeo rohita: Cirrhinus mrigala and Gibelion catla were stocked in cemented tanks in 1:1:1 ratio at stocking density of 3 fishm-2 for 60 days period. Survival rate of L. rohita, C. mrigala and G. catla was significantly higher (p<0.05) in substrates based treatments. In T1, T2 & T3, it was found to be 34.09%, 81.82% & 90.91% for L. rohita; 22.73%, 100.0% & 100.0% for C. mrigala and 36.36%, 90.91% & 100.0% for G. catla respectively. Total fish biomass of L. rohita, C. mrigala and G. catla harvested at the end of trial was 2.24, 4.32 and 1.42 times higher in treatment with bamboo poles as substrates and 1.18, 3.64 and 0.75 time higher in PVC pipes based treatment than that of control. Concentration of ammonia and nitrite was found to be significantly low in treatments with periphyton than control. High fish survival in periphyton based systems can be attributed to bioremediation through bioprocesses of their ubiquitous microbial biofilms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Quality Evaluation of Cookies Produced from Blends of Sweet Potato and Fermented Soybean Flour

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the quality characteristics of cookies produced from sweet potato-fermented soybean flour. Cookies were subjected to proximate and sensory analysis to determine the acceptability of the product. Protein, fat and ash increased as the proportion of soybean flour increased, ranging from 13.8-21.7, 1.22-5.25 and 2.20-2.57 respectively. The crude fibre content was within the range of 3.08-4.83%. The moisture content of the cookies decreased with increase in soybean flour from 3.42- 2.13%. Cookies produced from whole sweet potato flour had the highest moisture content of 3.42% while 30% substitution had the lowest moisture content 2.13%. A nine point hedonic scale was used to evaluate the organoleptic characteristics of the cookies. The sensory analysis indicated that there was no significant difference between the cookies produced even when compared to the control 100% sweet potato cookies. Abstract

This paper outlines how an aerial telecommunications network can optimally meet the stringent needs of emergency relief and recovery operations. We propose a novel architecture, made of an integrated and highly dynamic multi-purpose aerial telecommunications infrastructure that can be contextually extended with fast-deploying high or low altitude platforms. In particular, we analyze the interest and challenges of adapting core concepts from substitution networks and controlled mobility mechanisms, so that a base network can be seamlessly augmented, both in terms of capacity and functions. We give an estimation of the emergency traffic supported by the lower altitude platforms in an example scenario and discuss the challenges posed by this architecture, notably in terms of disaster resilience and ability to efficiently provide sustained first responder communications.
