Abstract

Two cases of 46, XY gonadal dysgenesis have been studied using molecular analysis. In one case, a 9p deletion was detected cytogenetically, while in the other case 9p appeared to be normal. In the first patient, the breakpoint was between D9S144 and D9S267, and the rearranged chromosome was of paternal origin. In the second case, the patient with the normal appearing 9p was hemizygous for markers D9S1858 and VLDLR, with a breakpoint possibly 6-8 cM from the telomere, a deletion that could not be observed through ordinary cytogenetic techniques because of the very terminal location.

Abstract

Cleavage plane of sand dollar eggs, restructured into cones, originates from the vertex region of the midpoint of asters. The aster center is placed near cell surface with the mitotic and cone axes in parallel orientation. Perpendicular mitotic and conical axes result in unilateral furrow formation near the vertex region. These data validate the estimations of Harris and Gewalt contractile ring induction model.

Abstract

Researchers analyzed the processes that start and complete the operational period of a stimulus-to-surface contraction, a receptive surface process and a localized surface contractile process in cytokinesis. The regular duration and duration under experimental conditions were compared to determine the character of mechanisms that coordinate the timing and sequence of processes in cytokinesis. The results indicated each element of cytokinesis can function prior to and after its regular active period. therapeutic method of stopping dependence on benzoadiazepines as an option to NMDA antagonism.

Abstract

One hundred forty-four boys from Urban schools in Equador were measured for plasma insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) to assess the validity of the hormone as an index in nutritional status and growth. Two groups of boys coming from the lower socio-economic class and found to have reduced caloric and protein intake were given caloric and nitrogen supplementation. Clinical and anthropometric measurement results show that height is strongly influenced by nutritional intake and that decreased IGF1 values can be a reliable index for food deprivation.

Abstract

We report the case of a patient with a case of cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis, which presented as a flare-up of her ulcerative colitis. Standard treatment for the flare-up, which included intravenous corticosteroids, bowel rest, topical salicylates and ultimately colectomy were not effective. The patient did not improve until therapy with intravenous ganciclovir was initiated. There have been 26 previous reports of CMV colitis complicating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The diagnosis is not frequently entertained and, if not made, leads to a high rate of colectomy (67 percent) and mortality (33 percent). Appropriate antiviral therapy appears to eliminate these complications, thus a high index of suspicion for CMV superinfection in cases of IBD refractory to traditional therapy is warranted. Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, and pathogenetic data provided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in nonneoplastic hypothalamo-pituitary disorders. After determination of age-specific pituitary heights, 46 children with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency (GH peak < 8 ng/ml) were studied. Twenty-nine patients (group I) had pituitary stalk interruption syndrome and 17 (group II) had no anatomic abnormalities. Age-specific pituitary height was decreased by more than 2 SDs in all group I patients versus only 60% (10/17) of group II patients. The GH deficiency was transient in 4 of the 7 children with normal pituitary findings. Forty-seven girls with breast development before eight years of age were also studied: age-specific pituitary height was normal in all girls with premature thelarche and 68% of girls with mild form of central precocious puberty (CPP). Conversely, in 70% of girls with evolutive CPP, age-specific pituitary height was increased by more than 2 SDs. These data show that MRI is useful for the diagnosis of pituitary insufficiency and that multiple anterior pituitary deficiencies can be expected in patients with anatomic abnormalities. MRI is of diagnostic and prognostic usefulness in CPP and, therefore, is of assistance in making therapeutic decisions. Ann Pediatr (Paris)
