Materials with chiral electronic structures are of great interest. We report a triazatruxene, TAT, molecular semiconductor with chiral alkyl side chains that crystallises from solution to form chirally-stacked columns with a helical pitch of 6 TATs (2.3 nm). These crystals show strong circularly polarised, CP, green photoluminescence, with dissymmetry of 24%. Electronic structure calculations using the full crystal structure, show that this chiral stacking associates angular momentum to the valence and conduction states and thus gives rise to the observed CP luminescence. Free-standing crystals are not useful for active semiconductor devices, but we have discovered that co-sublimation of TAT as the guest in a structurally mismatched host enables the fabrication of thin films where the chiral crystallization is achieved in-situ by thermally-triggered nano-phase segregation of dopant and host whilst preserving the integrity of the film. This enables fabrication of bright (green) organic light-emitting diodes with unexpectedly high external quantum efficiencies of up to 16% and electroluminescence dissymmetries above 10%. These materials and this process method offer significant application potential in spintronics, optical displays and multidimensional optoelectronics.

Optical control and read-out of the ground state spin structure has been demonstrated for defect states in crystalline semiconductors, including the diamond NV- center, and these are promising systems for quantum technologies. Molecular organic semiconductors offer synthetic control of spin placement, in contrast to current limitations in these crystalline systems. Here we report the discovery of spin-optical addressability in a diradical molecule that comprises two trityl radical groups coupled via a fluorene bridge. We demonstrate the three important properties that enable operation as a spin-photon interface: (i) triplet and singlet spin states show photoluminescence peaked at 640 and 700 nm respectively; this allows easy optical measurement of ground state spin. (ii) the ground state spin exchange is small (~60 {\mu}eV) that allows preparation of ground state spin population. This can be achieved by spin-selective excited state intersystem crossing, and we report up to 8% microwave-driven contrast in photoluminescence. (iii) both singlet and triplet manifolds have near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, which is in contrast to the near-zero quantum yields in prior reports of molecular diradicals. Our results establish these tuneable open-shell organic molecules as a platform to engineer tailor-made spin-optical interfaces.

Defect tolerance is a critical enabling factor for efficient lead-halide perovskite materials, but the current understanding is primarily on band-edge (cold) carriers, with significant debate over whether hot carriers (HCs) can also exhibit defect tolerance. Here, this important gap in the field is addressed by investigating how internationally-introduced traps affect HC relaxation in CsPbX3 nanocrystals (X = Br, I, or mixture). Using femtosecond interband and intraband spectroscopy, along with energy-dependent photoluminescence measurements and kinetic modelling, it is found that HCs are not universally defect tolerant in CsPbX3, but are strongly correlated to the defect tolerance of cold carriers, requiring shallow traps to be present (as in CsPbI3). It is found that HCs are directly captured by traps, instead of going through an intermediate cold carrier, and deeper traps cause faster HC cooling, reducing the effects of the hot phonon bottleneck and Auger reheating. Inorganic semiconductors based on heavy pnictogen cations (Sb3+ and Bi3+) have gained significant attention as potential nontoxic and stable alternatives to lead-halide perovskites for solar cell applications. A limitation of these novel materials, which is being increasingly commonly found, is carrier localization, which substantially reduces mobilities and diffusion lengths. Herein, the layered p\v{r}\'ibramite CuSbSe2 is investigated and discovered to have delocalized free carriers, as shown through optical pump terahertz probe spectroscopy and temperature-dependent mobility measurements. Using a combination of theory and experiment, it is found that the underlying factors are: 1) weak coupling to acoustic phonons due to low deformation potentials, as lattice distortions are primarily accommodated through rigid inter-layer movement rather than straining inter-atomic bonds, and 2) weak coupling to optical phonons due to the ionic contributions to the dielectric constant being low compared to electronic contributions. Solution-processable near-infrared (NIR) photodetectors are urgently needed for a wide range of next-generation electronics, including sensors, optical communications and bioimaging. However, there is currently a compromise between low toxicity and slow (<300 kHz cut-off frequency) organic materials versus faster detectors (>300 kHz cut-off frequency) based on compounds containing toxic lead or cadmium. Herein, we circumvent this trade-off by developing solution-processed AgBiS2 photodetectors with high cut-off frequencies under both white light (>1 MHz) and NIR (approaching 500 kHz) illumination. These high cut-off frequencies are due to the short transit distances of charge-carriers in the AgBiS2 photodetectors, which arise from the strong light absorption of these materials, such that film thicknesses well below 120 nm are adequate to absorb >65% of near-infrared to visible light. By finely controlling the thickness of the photoactive layer, we can modulate the charge-collection efficiency, achieve low dark current densities, and minimize the effects of ion migration to realize fast photodetectors that are stable in air. Transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy has proved fundamental to our understanding of energy and charge transfer in biological systems, allowing measurements of photoactive proteins on sub-picosecond timescales. Recently, ultrafast TA spectroscopy has been applied in vivo, providing sub-picosecond measurements of photosynthetic light harvesting and electron transfer processes within living photosynthetic microorganisms. The analysis of the resultant data is hindered by the number of different photoactive pigments and the associated complexity of photoactive reaction schemes within living cells. Here we show how in vivo ultrafast TA spectroscopy can be applied to a diverse array of organisms from the tree of life, both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic. We have developed a series of software tools for performing global, lifetime and target analysis of in vivo TA datasets. (Photo)electrocatalysts capture sunlight and use it to drive chemical reactions such as water splitting to produce H2. A major factor limiting photocatalyst development is their large heterogeneity which spatially modulates reactivity and precludes establishing robust structure-function relationships. To make such links requires simultaneously probing of the electrochemical environment at microscopic length scales (nm to um) and broad timescales (ns to s). Here, we address this challenge by developing and applying in-situ steady-state and transient optical microscopies to directly map and correlate local electrochemical activity with hole lifetimes, oxygen vacancy concentration and the photoelectrodes crystal structure. Using this combined approach alongside spatially resolved X-Ray absorption measurements, we study microstructural and point defects in prototypical hematite (Fe2O3) photoanodes. We demonstrate that regions of Fe2O3, adjacent to microstructural cracks have a better photoelectrochemical response and reduced back electron recombination due to an optimal oxide vacancy concentration, with the film thickness and carbon impurities also dramatically influencing activity in a complex manner. Our work highlights the importance of microscopic mapping to understand activity and the impact of defects in even, seemingly, homogeneous solid-state metal oxide photoelectrodes.

The family of hybrid organic-inorganic lead-halide perovskites are the subject of intense interest for optoelectronic applications, from light-emitting diodes to photovoltaics to X-ray detectors. Due to the inert nature of most organic molecules, the inorganic sublattice generally dominates the electronic structure and therefore optoelectronic properties of perovskites. Here, we use optically and electronically active carbazole-based Cz-Ci molecules, where Ci indicates an alkylammonium chain and i indicates the number of CH2 units in the chain, varying from 3-5, as cations in the 2D perovskite structure. By investigating the photophysics and charge transport characteristics of (Cz-Ci)2PbI4, we demonstrate a tunable electronic coupling between the inorganic lead-halide and organic layers. The strongest interlayer electronic coupling was found for (Cz-C3)2PbI4, where photothermal deflection spectroscopy results remarkably demonstrate an organic-inorganic charge transfer state. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy measurements demonstrate ultrafast hole transfer from the photoexcited lead-halide layer to the Cz-Ci molecules, the efficiency of which increases by varying the chain length from i=5 to i=3. The charge transfer results in long-lived carriers (10-100 ns) and quenched emission, in stark contrast with the fast (sub-ns) and efficient radiative decay of bound excitons in the more conventional 2D perovskite (PEA)2PbI4, in which phenylethylammonium (PEA) acts as an inert spacer. Electrical charge transport measurements further support enhanced interlayer coupling, showing increased out-of-plane carrier mobility from i=5 to i=3. Metal halide perovskite solar cells have gained widespread attention due to their high efficiency and high defect tolerance. The absorbing perovskite layer is as a mixed electron-ion conductor that supports high rates of ion and charge transport at room temperature, but the migration of mobile defects can lead to degradation pathways. We combine experimental observations and drift-diffusion modelling to demonstrate a new framework to interpret surface photovoltage (SPV) measurements in perovskite systems and mixed electronic ionic conductors more generally. We conclude that the SPV in mixed electronic ionic conductors can be understood in terms of the change in electric potential at the surface associated with changes in the net charge within the semiconductor system. We show that by modifying the interfaces of perovskite bilayers, we may control defect migration behaviour throughout the perovskite bulk. Our new framework for SPV has broad implications for developing strategies to improve the stability of perovskite devices by controlling defect accumulation at interfaces. More generally, in mixed electronic conductors our framework provides new insights into the behaviour of mobile defects and their interaction with photoinduced charges, which are foundational to physical mechanisms in memristivity, logic, impedance, sensors and energy storage.

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are able to concentrate both direct and diffuse solar radiation and this ability has led to great interest in using them to improve solar energy capture when coupled to traditional photovoltaics (PV). In principle, a large area LSC could concentrate light onto a much smaller area of PV, thus reducing costs or enabling new architectures. However, LSCs suffer from various optical losses which are hard to quantify using simple measurements of power conversion efficiency. Here, we show that spatially resolved photoluminescence quantum efficiency measurements on large area LSCs can be used to resolve various losses processes such as out-coupling, self-absorption via emitters and self-absorption from the LSC matrix. Further, these measurements allow for the extrapolation of device performance to arbitrarily large LSCs. Polarised light is critical for a wide range of applications, but is usually generated by filtering unpolarised light, which leads to significant energy losses and requires additional optics. Herein, the direct emission of linearly-polarised light is achieved from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) made of CsPbI3 perovskite nanoplatelet superlattices. Through use of solvents with different vapour pressures, the self-assembly of perovskite nanoplatelets is achieved to enable fine control over the orientation (either face-up or edge-up) and therefore the transition dipole moment. As a result of the highly-uniform alignment of the nanoplatelets, as well as their strong quantum and dielectric confinement, large exciton fine-structure splitting is achieved at the film level, leading to pure-red LEDs exhibiting a high degree of linear polarisation of 74.4% without any photonic structures. This work unveils the possibilities of perovskite nanoplatelets as a highly promising source of linearly-polarised electroluminescence, opening up the development of next-generation 3D displays and optical communications from this highly versatile, solution-processable system., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures

The interest in obtaining high-quality monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for optoelectronic device applications has been growing dramatically. However, the prevalence of defects and unwanted doping in these materials remains a challenge, as they both limit optical properties and device performance. Surface chemical treatments of monolayer TMDs have been effective in improving their photoluminescence yield and charge transport properties. In this scenario, a systematic understanding of the underlying mechanism of chemical treatments will lead to a rational design of passivation strategies in future research, ultimately taking a step toward practical optoelectronic applications. We will therefore describe in this review the strategies, progress, mechanisms, and prospects of chemical treatments to passivate and improve the optoelectronic properties of TMDs.

Nanoribbons - nanometer wide strips of a two-dimensional material - are a unique system in condensed matter physics. They combine the exotic electronic structures of low-dimensional materials with an enhanced number of exposed edges, where phenomena including ultralong spin coherence times, quantum confinement and topologically protected states can emerge. An exciting prospect for this new material concept is the potential for both a tunable semiconducting electronic structure and magnetism along the nanoribbon edge. This combination of magnetism and semiconducting properties is the first step in unlocking spin-based electronics such as non-volatile transistors, a route to low-energy computing, and has thus far typically only been observed in doped semiconductor systems and/or at low temperatures. Here, we report the magnetic and semiconducting properties of phosphorene nanoribbons (PNRs). Static (SQUID) and dynamic (EPR) magnetization probes demonstrate that at room temperature, films of PNRs exhibit macroscopic magnetic properties, arising from their edge, with internal fields of ~ 250 to 800 mT. In solution, a giant magnetic anisotropy enables the alignment of PNRs at modest sub-1T fields. By leveraging this alignment effect, we discover that upon photoexcitation, energy is rapidly funneled to a dark-exciton state that is localized to the magnetic edge and coupled to a symmetry-forbidden edge phonon mode. Our results establish PNRs as a unique candidate system for studying the interplay of magnetism and semiconducting ground states at room temperature and provide a stepping-stone towards using low-dimensional nanomaterials in quantum electronics., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Photoinduced spin-charge interconversion in semiconductors with spin-orbit coupling could provide a route to optically addressable spintronics without the use of external magnetic fields. A central question is whether the resulting spin-associated charge currents are robust to structural disorder, which is inherent to polycrystalline semiconductors that are desirable for device applications. Using femtosecond circular polarization-resolved pump-probe microscopy on polycrystalline halide perovskite thin films, we observe the photoinduced ultrafast formation of spin-polarized positive and, unexpectedly, negative spin domains on the micron scale formed through lateral currents. Further, the polarization of these domains and lateral transport direction is switched upon switching the polarization of the pump helicity. Micron scale variations in the intensity of optical second-harmonic generation and vertical piezoresponse suggest that the spin domain formation is driven by the presence of strong local inversion symmetry breaking via inter-grain structural disorder. We propose that this leads to spatially varying Rashba-like spin textures that drive spin-momentum locked currents, leading to local spin accumulation. Our results establish ultrafast spin domain formation in polycrystalline semiconductors as a new optically addressable platform for nanoscale spin-device physics.

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are theoretically able to concentrate both direct and diffuse solar radiation with extremely high efficiencies. Photon-multiplier luminescent solar concentrators (PM-LSCs) contain chromophores which exceed 100\% photoluminescence quantum efficiency. PM-LSCs have recently been experimentally demonstrated and hold promise to outcompete traditional LSCs. However, we find that the thermodynamic limits of PM-LSCs are different and are sometimes more extreme relative to traditional LSCs. As might be expected, to achieve very high concentration factors a PM-LSC design must also include a free energy change, analogous to the Stokes shift in traditional LSCs. Notably, unlike LSCs, the maximum concentration ratio of a PM-LSC is dependent on brightness of the incident photon field. For some brightnesses, but equivalent energy loss, the PM-LSC has a greater maximum concentration factor than that of the traditional LSC. We find that the thermodynamic requirements to achieve highly concentrating PM-LSCs differ from traditional LSCs. The new model gives insight into the limits of concentration of PM-LSCs and may be used to extract design rules for further PM-LSC design.

Photosystems II and I (PSII and PSI) are the reaction centre complexes that drive the light reactions of photosynthesis. PSII performs light-driven water oxidation (quantum efficiencies and catalysis rates of up to 80% and 1000 $e^{-}\text{s}^{-1}$, respectively) and PSI further photo-energises the harvested electrons (quantum efficiencies of ~100%). The impressive performance of the light harvesting components of photosynthesis has motivated extensive biological, artificial and biohybrid approaches to re-wire photosynthesis to enable higher efficiencies and new reaction pathways, such as H2 evolution or alternative CO2 fixation. To date these approaches have focussed on charge extraction at the terminal electron quinones of PSII and terminal iron-sulfur clusters of PSI. Ideally electron extraction would be possible immediately from the photoexcited reaction centres to enable the greatest thermodynamic gains. However, this was believed to be impossible because the reaction centres are buried around 4 nm within PSII and 5 nm within PSI from the cytoplasmic face. Here, we demonstrate using in vivo ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy that it is possible to extract electrons directly from photoexcited PSI and PSII, using both live cyanobacterial cells and isolated photosystems, with the exogenous electron mediator 2,6-dichloro1,4-benzoquinone (DCBQ). We postulate that DCBQ can oxidise peripheral chlorophyll pigments participating in highly delocalised charge transfer (CT) states after initial photoexcitation. Our results open new avenues to study and re-wire photosynthesis for bioenergy and semi-artificial photosynthesis.

Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are desired as active materials in optoelectronic devices due to their strong excitonic effects. They can be exfoliated from their parent layered materials with low-cost and for mass production via a liquid exfoliation method. However, the device application of TMDs prepared by liquid phase exfoliation is limited by their poor photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQE). It is crucial to understand the reason to low PLQE for their practical device development. Here we evaluate the quality of monolayer-enriched liquid phase exfoliated (LPE) WS$_2$ dispersions by systematically investigating their optical and photophysical properties and contrasting with mechanically exfoliated (ME) WS2 monolayers. An in-depth understanding of the exciton dynamics is gained with ultrafast pump-probe measurements. We reveal that the energy transfer between monolayer and few-layers in LPE WS$_2$ dispersions is a substantial reason for their quenched PL. In addition, we show that LPE WS$_2$ is promising to build high performance optoelectronic devices with excellent optical quality.

While there have been numerous reports of long-range polariton transport at room-temperature in organic cavities, the spatio-temporal evolution of the propagation is scarcely reported, particularly in the initial coherent sub-ps regime, where photon and exciton wavefunctions are inextricably mixed. Hence the detailed process of coherent organic exciton-polariton transport and in particular the role of dark states has remained poorly understood. Here, we use femtosecond transient absorption microscopy to directly image coherent polariton motion in microcavities of varying quality factor. We find the transport to be well-described by a model of band-like propagation of an initially Gaussian distribution of exciton-polaritons in real space. The velocity of the polaritons reaches values of ~0.65x10^6 m s-1, substantially lower than expected from the polariton dispersion. Further, we find that the velocity is proportional to the quality factor of the microcavity. We suggest this unexpected link between the quality-factor and polariton velocity and slow coherent transport to be a result of varying admixing between delocalised dark and polariton states.

Recent years have seen a rapidly escalating demand for battery technologies capable of storing more energy, charging more quickly and having longer usable lifetimes, driven largely by increased electrification of transport and by grid-scale energy storage systems. This has led to the development of many promising new electrode materials for high-rate lithium ion batteries. In order to rationalise and improve upon material performance, it is crucial to understand the fundamental ion-intercalation and degradation mechanisms occurring during realistic battery operation, on the nano- to meso-scale. Here we apply a straightforward laboratory-based operando optical scattering microscopy method to study micron-sized rods of the high-rate anode material Nb$_{14}$W$_3$O$_{44}$ during cycling at rates of up to 30C. We directly visualise an elongation of the rods, which, by comparison with ensemble X-ray diffraction, allows us to determine the state of charge (SOC) of the individual particle. A continuous change in scattering intensity with SOC is also seen, enabling observation of a non-equilibrium kinetic phase separation within individual particles. Phase field modelling (informed by pulsed-field-gradient nuclear magnetic resonance and electrochemical experiments) is used to verify the kinetic origin of this separation, which arises from a dependence of the Li-ion diffusion coefficient upon SOC. Finally, we witness how such intra-particle SOC heterogeneity can lead to particle cracking; we follow the cycling behaviour of the resultant fragments, and show that they may become electrically disconnected from the electrode. These results demonstrate the power of optical scattering microscopy to track rapid non-equilibrium processes, often occurring over less than 1 minute, which would be inaccessible with established characterisation techniques., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures

Thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) enables organic semiconductors with charge transfer (CT)-type excitons to convert dark triplet states into bright singlets via a reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) process. Here, we consider the role of the dielectric environment in a range of TADF materials with varying changes in dipole moment upon optical excitation. In a dipolar reference emitter, TXO-TPA, environmental reorganisation after excitation in both solution and doped films triggers the formation of the full CT product state. This lowers the singlet excitation energy by 0.3 eV and minimises the singlet-triplet energy gap ({\Delta}EST). Using impulsive Raman measurements, we observe the emergence of two (reactant-inactive) modes at 412 and 813 cm-1 as a vibrational fingerprint of the CT product. In contrast, the dielectric environment plays a smaller role in the electronic excitations of a less dipolar material, 4CzIPN. Quantum-chemical calculations corroborate the appearance of these new product modes in TXO-TPA and show that the dynamic environment fluctuations are large compared to {\Delta}EST. The analysis of the energy-time trajectories and the corresponding free energy functions reveals that the dielectric environment significantly reduces the activation energy for rISC, thus increasing the rISC rate by up to three orders of magnitude when compared to a vacuum environment., Comment: 67 pages, 7 main-text figures

We present quantitative ultrafast interferometric pump-probe microscopy capable of tracking of photoexcitations with sub 10 nm spatial precision in three dimensions with 15 fs temporal resolution, through retrieval of the full transient photoinduced complex refractive index. We use this methodology to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of the quantum coherent photophysical process of ultrafast singlet exciton fission. Measurements on microcrystalline pentacene films grown on glass (SiO$_2$) and boron nitride (hBN) reveal a 25 nm, 70 fs expansion of the joint-density-of-states along the crystal a,c-axes accompanied by a 6 nm, 115 fs change in the exciton density along the crystal b-axis. We propose that photogenerated singlet excitons expand along the direction of maximal orbital $\pi$-overlap in the crystal a,c-plane to form correlated triplet pairs, which subsequently electronically decouples into free triplets along the crystal b-axis due to molecular sliding motion of neighbouring pentacene molecules. This methodology opens a new route for the study of three dimensional transport on ultrafast timescales.

Optical pump-probe spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the study of non-equilibrium electronic dynamics and finds wide applications across a range of fields, from physics and chemistry to material science and biology. However, a shortcoming of conventional pump-probe spectroscopy is that photoinduced changes in transmission, reflection and scattering can simultaneously contribute to the measured differential spectra, leading to ambiguities in assigning the origin of spectral signatures and ruling out quantitative interpretation of the spectra. Ideally, these methods would measure the underlying dielectric function (or the complex refractive index) which would then directly provide quantitative information on the transient excited state dynamics free of these ambiguities. Here we present and test a model independent route to transform differential transmission or reflection spectra, measured via conventional optical pump-probe spectroscopy, to changes in the quantitative transient dielectric function. We benchmark this method against changes in the real refractive index measured using time-resolved Frequency Domain Interferometry in prototypical inorganic and organic semiconductor films. Our methodology can be applied to existing and future pump-probe data sets, allowing for an unambiguous and quantitative characterisation of the transient photoexcited spectra of materials. This in turn will accelerate the adoption of pump-probe spectroscopy as a facile and robust materials characterisation and screening tool.

Ocean waves provide a consistent, reliable source of clean energy making them a viable energy source for desalination. Ocean wave energy is useful to coastal communities, especially island nations. However, large capital costs render current wave-powered desalination technologies economically infeasible. This work presents a high efficiency configuration for ocean wave energy powering batch reverse osmosis. The proposed system uses seawater as the working fluid in a hydro-mechanical wave energy converter and replaces the reverse osmosis high-pressure pump with a hydraulic converter for direct-drive coupling. This allows for minimal intermediary power conversions, fewer components, and higher efficiencies. The concept was analyzed with MATLAB to model the transient energy dynamics of the wave energy converter, power take-off system, and desalination load. The fully hydro-mechanical coupling, incorporating energy recovery, could achieve an SEC and LCOW as low as 2.30 kWh/m3 and $1.96, respectively, for different sea states. The results were validated at the sub-system level against existing literature on wave energy models and previous work completed on batch reverse osmosis models, as this system was the first to combine these two technologies. Strong light-matter coupling to form exciton- and vibropolaritons is increasingly touted as a powerful tool to alter the fundamental properties of organic materials. It is proposed that these states and their facile tunability can be used to rewrite molecular potential energy landscapes and redirect photophysical pathways, with applications from catalysis to electronic devices. Crucial to their photophysical properties is the exchange of energy between coherent, bright polaritons and incoherent dark states. One of the most potent tools to explore this interplay is transient absorption/reflectance spectroscopy. Previous studies have revealed unexpectedly long lifetimes of the coherent polariton states, for which there is no theoretical explanation. Applying these transient methods to a series of strong-coupled organic microcavities, we recover similar long-lived spectral effects. Based on transfer-matrix modelling of the transient experiment, we find that virtually the entire photoresponse results from photoexcitation effects other than the generation of polariton states. Our results suggest that the complex optical properties of polaritonic systems make them especially prone to misleading optical signatures, and that more challenging high-time-resolution measurements on high-quality microcavities are necessary to uniquely distinguish the coherent polariton dynamics.

Halide perovskites perform remarkably in optoelectronic devices including tandem photovoltaics. However, this exceptional performance is striking given that perovskites exhibit deep charge carrier traps and spatial compositional and structural heterogeneity, all of which should be detrimental to performance. Here, we resolve this long-standing paradox by providing a global visualisation of the nanoscale chemical, structural and optoelectronic landscape in halide perovskite devices, made possible through the development of a new suite of correlative, multimodal microscopy measurements combining quantitative optical spectroscopic techniques and synchrotron nanoprobe measurements. We show that compositional disorder dominates the optoelectronic response, while nanoscale strain variations even of large magnitude (~1 %) have only a weak influence. Nanoscale compositional gradients drive carrier funneling onto local regions associated with low electronic disorder, drawing carrier recombination away from trap clusters associated with electronic disorder and leading to high local photoluminescence quantum efficiency. These measurements reveal a global picture of the competitive nanoscale landscape, which endows enhanced defect tolerance in devices through spatial chemical disorder that outcompetes both electronic and structural disorder., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

Key to advancing lithium-ion battery technology, and in particular fast charging capabilities, is our ability to follow and understand the dynamic processes occurring in operating materials under realistic conditions, in real time, and on the nano- to meso-scale. Currently, operando imaging of lithium-ion dynamics requires sophisticated synchrotron X-ray or electron microscopy techniques, which do not lend themselves to high-throughput material screening. This limits rapid and rational materials improvements. Here we introduce a simple lab-based, optical interferometric scattering microscope to resolve nanoscopic lithium-ion dynamics in battery materials and apply it to follow the repeated cycling of the archetypical cathode material Li$_\textit{x}$CoO$_2$. The method allows us to visualise directly the insulator-metal, solid solution and lithium ordering phase transitions in this material. We determine rates of lithium insertion and removal at the single-particle level and identify different mechanisms that occur on charge vs. discharge. Finally, we capture the dynamic formation of domain boundaries between different crystal orientations associated with the monoclinic lattice distortion at around Li$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$. The high throughput nature of our methodology allows many particles to be sampled across the entire electrode and, moving forward, will enable exploration of the role of dislocations, morphologies and cycling rate on battery degradation. The generality of our imaging concept means that it can be applied to study any battery electrode, and more broadly, systems where the transport of ions is associated with electronic or structural changes, including nanoionic films, ionic conducting polymers, photocatalytic materials and memristors., Comment: 18 pages, including 5 figures

The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs) using non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have now reached 18%. However, this is still lower than inorganic solar cells, for which PCEs >20% are commonplace. A key reason is that OSCs still show low open-circuit voltages (Voc) relative to their optical band gaps, attributed to non-radiative recombination. For OSCs to compete with inorganics in efficiency, all non-radiative loss pathways must be identified and where possible, removed. Here, we show that in most NFA OSCs, the majority of charge recombination at open-circuit proceeds via formation of non-emissive NFA triplet excitons (T1); in the benchmark PM6:Y6 blend, this fraction reaches 90%, contributing 60 mV to the reduction of Voc. We develop a new design to prevent recombination via this non-radiative channel through the engineering of significant hybridisation between the NFA T1 and the spin-triplet charge transfer exciton (3CTE). We model that the rate of the back charge transfer from 3CTE to T1 can be reduced by an order of magnitude, allowing re-dissociation of the 3CTE. We then demonstrate NFA systems where T1 formation is suppressed. Many optoelectronic devices based on organic materials require rapid and long-range singlet exciton transport. Key factors that control the transport of singlet excitons includes the electronic structure of the material, disorder and exciton-phonon coupling. An important parameter whose influence on exciton transport has not been explored is the symmetry of the singlet electronic state (S1). There is a growing interest in obtaining high quality monolayer transition metal disulfides (TMDSs) for optoelectronic device applications. Surface chemical treatments using a range of chemicals on monolayer TMDSs have proven effective to improve their photoluminescence (PL) yield. However, the underlying mechanism for PL enhancement by these treatments is not clear, which prevents a rational design of passivation strategies. In this work, a simple and effective approach to significantly enhance PL of TMDSs is demonstrated by using a family of cation donors, which we show to be much more effective than commonly used p-dopants which achieve PL enhancement through electron transfer. We develop a detailed mechanistic picture for the action of these cation donors and demonstrate that one of them, Li-TFSI (bistriflimide), enhances the PL of both MoS2 and WS2 to a level double that compared to the widely discussed and currently best performing super acid H-TFSI treatment. In addition, the ionic salts used in chemical treatments are compatible with a range of greener solvents and are easier to handle than super-acids, which provides the possibility of directly treating TMDSs during device fabrication. Efficient energy transport is highly desirable for organic semiconductor (OSC) devices such as photovoltaics, photodetectors, and photocatalytic systems. However, photo-generated excitons in OSC films mostly occupy highly localized states over their lifetime. Energy transport is hence thought to be mainly mediated by the site-to-site hopping of localized excitons, limiting exciton diffusion coefficients to below ~10^{-2} cm^2/s with corresponding diffusion lengths below ~50 nm. Here, using ultrafast optical microscopy combined with non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, we present evidence for a new highly-efficient energy transport regime: transient exciton delocalization, where energy exchange with vibrational modes allows excitons to temporarily re-access spatially extended states under equilibrium conditions. In films of highly-ordered poly(3-hexylthiophene) nanofibers, prepared using living crystallization-driven self-assembly, we show that this enables exciton diffusion constants up to 1.1+-0.1 cm^2/s and diffusion lengths of 300+-50 nm. Our results reveal the dynamic interplay between localized and delocalized exciton configurations at equilibrium conditions, calling for a re-evaluation of the basic picture of exciton dynamics. Singlet fission (SF), an exciton multiplication process occurring in organic semiconductors, offers a way to break the Shockley-Queisser limit in single-bandgap photovoltaics (PV). If the triplet excitons generated by SF can be transferred to inorganic quantum dots (QDs), where they radiatively recombine, SF based photon multiplication is achieved, converting a single high-energy photon into two low-energy photons. Such a SF photon multiplication film (SF-PMF) could raise the efficiency of the best Si-PV from 26.7% to 32.5%. But a precise nanoscale morphology is required within such a film consisting of the appropriate morphology for the organic phase, allowing for efficient SF, within which the QD emitters are well dispersed on a tens of nm length scale to enable efficient harvesting of the triplets. However, it has been a long-standing problem that the individual components in organic-QD blends have a tendency to aggregate and phase separate, due to a mismatch of their size, shape and surface energies. Here, we demonstrate a QD surface engineering approach using an electronically active, highly soluble semiconductor ligand that is matched to the SF material, which allows us to direct the self-assembly process yielding solution processed films with well-dispersed QDs and minimal aggregation, as characterised by X-ray and neutron scattering and electron microscopy. Steady state and time-resolved optical spectroscopy show that the films support efficient SF (190% yield) in the organic phase and quantitative triplet energy transfer across the organic-QD interface, resulting in 95% of the triplet excitons being harvested by the QDs. Our results establish the SF-PMF as a highly promising architecture to harness the SF process to enhance PV efficiencies, and also provide a highly versatile approach to overcome challenges in the blending of organic semiconductors with QDs., Comment: 42 pages, 22 Figures

The layered chalcogenide Ta$_{2}$NiSe$_{5}$ has been proposed to host an excitonic condensate in its ground state, a phase that could offer a unique platform to study and manipulate many-body states at room temperature. However, identifying the dominant microscopic contribution to the observed spontaneous symmetry breaking remains challenging, perpetuating the debate over the ground state properties. Here, using broadband ultrafast spectroscopy we investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of Ta$_{2}$NiSe$_{5}$ and demonstrate that the transient reflectivity in the near-infrared range is connected to the system's low-energy physics. We track the status of the ordered phase using this optical signature, establishing that high-fluence photoexcitations can suppress this order. From the sub-50 fs quenching timescale and the behaviour of the photoinduced coherent phonon modes, we conclude that electronic correlations provide a decisive contribution to the excitonic order formation. Our results pave the way towards the ultrafast control of an exciton condensate at room temperature.

Heterostructures of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and inorganic semiconducting zero-dimensional (0D) quantum dots (QDs) offer unique charge and energy transfer pathways which could form the basis of novel optoelectronic devices. To date, most has focused on charge transfer and energy transfer from QDs to TMDs, i.e. from 0D to 2D. Here, we present a study of the energy transfer process from a 2D to 0D material, specifically exploring energy transfer from monolayer tungsten disulphide ($WS_{2}$) to near infrared (NIR) emitting lead sulphide-cadmium sulphide (PbS-CdS) QDs. The high absorption cross section of $WS_{2}$ in the visible region combined with the potentially high photoluminescence (PL) efficiency of PbS QD systems, make this an interesting donor-acceptor system that can effectively use the WS2 as an antenna and the QD as a tuneable emitter, in this case downshifting the emission energy over hundreds of meV. We study the energy transfer process using photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and PL microscopy, and show that 58% of the QD PL arises due to energy transfer from the $WS_{2}$. Time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) microscopy studies show that the energy transfer process is faster than the intrinsic PL quenching by trap states in the $WS_{2}$, thus allowing for efficient energy transfer. Our results establish that QDs could be used as tuneable and high PL efficiency emitters to modify the emission properties of TMDs. Such TMD/QD heterostructures could have applications in light emitting technologies, artificial light harvesting systems or be used to read out the state of TMD devices optically in various logic and computing applications

Exciton-polaritons in organic materials are hybrid states that result from the strong interaction of photons and the bound excitons that these materials host. Organic polaritons hold great interest for optoelectronic applications, however progress towards this end has been impeded by the lack of a first principles approach that quantifies light-matter interactions in these systems, and which would allow the formulation of molecular design rules. Here we develop such a first principles approach, quantifying light-matter interactions. We exemplify our approach by studying variants of the conjugated polymer polydiacetylene, and we show that a large polymer conjugation length is critical towards strong exciton-photon coupling, hence underlying the importance of pure structures without static disorder. By comparing to our experimental reflectivity measurements, we show that the coupling of excitons to vibrations, manifested by phonon side bands in the absorption, has a strong impact on the magnitude of light-matter coupling over a range of frequencies. Our approach opens the way towards a deeper understanding of polaritons in organic materials, and we highlight that a quantitatively accurate calculation of the exciton-photon interaction would require accounting for all sources of disorder self-consistently.

The inherently low photoluminescence (PL) yields in as prepared transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers are broadly accepted to be the result of atomic vacancies (i.e. defects) and uncontrolled doping, which give rise to non-radiative exciton decay pathways. To date, a number of chemical passivation schemes have been successfully developed to improve PL in sulphur based TMDs i.e. molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) and tungsten disulphide (WS2) monolayers. Reports on solution based chemical passivation schemes for improving PL yields in selenium (Se) based TMDs are lacking I comparison, with only one known study that uses hydrobromic acid vapour to improve PL in chemical vapour deposited (CVD) Molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2). Here, we demonstrate that treatment with oleic acid (OA) provides a simple wet chemical passivation method for monolayer MoSe2, enhancing PL yield by an average of 58 fold, while also enhancing spectral uniformity across the material and reducing emission linewidth. Excitation intensity dependent PL reveals trap-free PL dynamics dominated by neutral exciton recombination. Time-resolved PL (TRPL) studies reveal significantly increased PL lifetimes, with pump intensity dependent TRPL measurements also confirming trap free PL dynamics in OA treated MoSe2. Field effect transistors show reduced charge trap density and improved on-off ratios after treatment with OA. These results indicate defect passivation by OA, which we hypothesise act as ligands, passivating chalcogen defects through oleate coordination to Mo dangling bonds.

Organic semiconductors exhibit properties of individual molecules and extended crystals simultaneously. The strongly bound excitons they host are typically described in the molecular limit, but excitons can delocalize over many molecules, raising the question of how important the extended crystalline nature is. Using accurate Green's function based methods for the electronic structure and non-perturbative finite difference methods for exciton-vibration coupling, we describe exciton interactions with molecular and crystal degrees of freedom concurrently. We find that the degree of exciton delocalization controls these interactions, with thermally activated crystal phonons predominantly coupling to delocalized states, and molecular quantum fluctuations predominantly coupling to localized states. Based on this picture, we quantitatively predict and interpret the temperature and pressure dependence of excitonic peaks in the acene series of organic semiconductors, which we confirm experimentally, and we develop a simple experimental protocol for probing exciton delocalization. Overall, we provide a unified picture of exciton delocalization and vibrational effects in organic semiconductors, reconciling the complementary views of finite molecular clusters and periodic molecular solids.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on non-fullerene acceptors can show high charge generation yields despite near-zero donor-acceptor energy offsets to drive charge separation and overcome the mutual Coulomb attraction between electron and hole. Here we use time-resolved optical spectroscopy to show that free charges in these systems are generated by thermally activated dissociation of interfacial charge-transfer excitons (CTEs) that occurs over hundreds of picoseconds at room temperature, three orders of magnitude slower than comparable fullerene-based systems. Upon free electron-hole encounters at later times, CTEs and emissive excitons are regenerated, thus setting up an equilibrium between excitons, CTEs and free charges. This endothermic charge separation process enables these systems to operate close to quasi-thermodynamic equilibrium conditions with no requirement for energy offsets to drive charge separation and achieve greatly suppressed non-radiative recombination., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures
