An increasing amount of technological solutions aiming to support emotion regulation are being developed for Autistic people. However, there remains a lack of understanding of user needs, and design factors which has led to poor usability and varied success. Furthermore, studies assessing the feasibility of emotion regulation technology via physiological signals for autistic people are increasingly showing promise, yet to date there has been no exploration of views from the autistic community on the benefits/challenges such technology may present in practice. Focus groups with autistic people and their allies were conducted to gain insight into experiences and expectations of technological supports aimed at supporting emotion regulation. Reflexive thematic analysis generated three themes: (1) communication challenges (2) views on emotion regulation technology (3) 'how' technology is implemented. Results provide meaningful insight into the socio-emotional communication challenges faced by autistic people, and explore the expectations of technology aimed at supporting emotion regulation.

Evidence from "pet-friendly" workplaces highlights potential benefits associated with taking companion animals to work, including reduced stress among employees. Ornamental fishes carry a much lower risk than other companion animals and may be a suitable alternative in situations where other animals would introduce too great a risk (e.g., allergy, accidental injury). The aim of this study was to investigate whether watching an aquarium during the working day influenced employee wellbeing through the reduction of stress and improvements in stress-related outcomes. An embedded mixed-methods study was conducted, comprising two within-subjects trials (Trials A and B) and a qualitative follow-up. Participants were university employees and research students who participated during their working day. In Trial A (n = 30), the immediate effects of watching live fishes on mood, physiological stress, and cognitive performance were compared with the effects of watching a fish video or resting quietly. Although some outcomes improved from pre- to post-activity, there was no evidence that watching fishes (live or video) had greater effects than resting quietly. In Trial B (n = 27), the effects of repeatedly engaging in the same three activities over several weeks were examined. Watching fish videos was associated with improvements in "high pleasure-low arousal" and overall job-related affective wellbeing, but no further effects of condition were found. Qualitative follow-up data collected from a subset of participants from the experimental trials (n = 13) indicated that all three activities may be beneficial as leaving their desks provided detachment from work for a short period. Qualitative data suggested that live fishes were perceived as more engaging, but this did not translate to quantitative findings. Locating fish aquaria within offices (rather than a separate workplace location) may promote wellbeing by encouraging "microbreaks"; further research is needed to investigate this hypothesis. Abstract Background Global food insecurity is associated with micronutrient deficiencies and it has been suggested that 4.5 billion people world-wide are affected by deficiencies in iron, vitamin A and iodine. Zinc has also been identified to be of increasing concern. The most vulnerable are young children and women of childbearing age. A pilot study has been carried out in Southern Malawi, to attempt to link the geochemical and agricultural basis of micronutrient supply through spatial variability to maternal health and associated cultural and social aspects of nutrition. The aim is to establish the opportunity for concerted action to deliver step change improvements in the nutrition of developing countries. Results Field work undertaken in August 2007 and July/August 2008 involved the collection of blood, soil and crop samples, and questionnaires from ~100 pregnant women. Complex permissions and authorisation protocols were identified and found to be as much part of the cultural and social context of the work as the complexity of the interdisciplinary project. These issues are catalogued and discussed. A preliminary spatial evaluation is presented linking soil quality and food production to nutritional health. It also considers behavioural and cultural attitudes of women and children in two regions of southern Malawi, (the Shire Valley and Shire Highlands plateau). Differences in agricultural practice and widely varying soil quality (e.g. pH organic matter, C/N and metal content) were observed for both regions and full chemical analysis of soil and food is underway. Early assessment of blood data suggests major differences in health and nutritional status between the two regions. Differences in food availability and type and observations of life style are being evaluated through questionnaire analysis. Conclusion The particular emphasis of the study is on the interdisciplinary opportunities and the barriers to progress in development support in subsistence communities. Engaging at the community level and the balance of expectations from both study subjects and research team highlight the merit of careful and detailed planning and project delivery.

Obesity represents a significant proportion of the global public health burden, with the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating more than 600 million people are affected worldwide. Unfortunately, the epidemic of obesity is linked to the increased prevalence of associated metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Bariatric surgery as an intervention has been shown to provide sustainable weight loss, and also leads to superior short- and long-term metabolic benefits including T2DM remission. Despite this added advantage conferred by bariatric surgery, emerging evidence has shown that not all patients with T2DM achieve remission postoperatively. As such, to improve patient selection and optimize preoperative counselling, research has focused on the preoperative predictors of T2DM remission following bariatric surgery. Herein, we provide a critical review of the current literature addressing preoperative predictors of T2DM remission and highlight the current gaps in the literature. The review comprised a multistage advanced electronic search of the Ovid/Medline, Embase, and Cochrane online libraries to identify available studies published over the last decade. Background We aimed to compare the immunologic and hematologic effects of 3 multimicronutrient supplements in human immunodeficiency virus–positive children in Lagos, Nigeria. Methods This double-blind, randomized controlled study included 190 children, aged 5–12 years, in Lagos, Nigeria. Sixty-four, 63, and 63 participants were assigned to multimicronutrient group A, B, or C, respectively, for 6 months. Supplements A, B, and C contained 7 micronutrients at the recommended daily allowance (RDA) (comparable to standard-of-care multivitamin), 22 micronutrients at the RDA, and 22 micronutrients at 3 times the recommended daily allowance (3RDA), respectively. Using paired sample t tests and factorial repeat-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), within- and between-group changes in CD4 count and hemoglobin levels were evaluated after 6 months. Results After 6 months of supplementation, paired-sample t test showed that CD4 cell count did not significantly differ from baseline for all 3 groups. Between-subject effect also did not significantly differ in the 3 groups after 6 months (factorial repeat-measures ANOVA (F [degrees of freedom { df } = 2, 187] = 0.846; P =.436; partial η 2 = 0.009). Hemoglobin levels were significantly increased after supplementation in all 3 supplement groups. Increases were not significantly different between groups (factorial repeat-measures ANOVA (F [ df = 2, 187] = 0.549; P =.591; partial η 2 = 0.006). Conclusions Equivalent effects were observed. After 6 months of supplementation, mean CD4 count was not significantly different between groups.
