Abstract

This study reports the results of an analysis performed on 40.5 km stretch of River Tungabhadra. The results show that there was a significant increase in all the physical and chemical variables of the river towards downstream of Harihara town, particularly in the pre-monsoon season. However, all the variables remain within the standards recommended for drinking water. Based on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines, the classification of water at various segments of the research focal area is as follows: the 12.08 km stretch from the upstream boundary (Ingalagondi) is designated as class C, based on the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). However, from 12.08 km to 40.5 km on the stretch of downstream Harihara is designated as Class D, based on the BOD. However, in terms of dissolved oxygen (DO), the river satisfies the requirements for Class C (> 4 mg/L) at all of the locations sampled across all periods.

2. Sustained release of curcumin from fibrin matrix induces cancer cell death and immunomodulation

Abstract

Despite the role of curcumin in controlling inflammation, angiogenesis, and cancer in human cells, its therapeutic use is limited. The reasons are quick metabolic breakdown, low aqueous solubility, and bioavailability. This study describes the advantages of clinical-grade curcumin-incorporated fibrin matrix either in lyophilized off-the-shelf wafer or injectable hydrogel forms, as a biodegradable local delivery system. To produce the curcumin-fibrin wafer, used clinical-grade fibrin sealant in a modified composition. To fabricate wafer, we premixed the curcumin with either fibrinogen or thrombin, before clotting into a hydrogel. Sustained release of active curcumin from fibrin wafer, suspended in culture medium at 37 °C lasted for seven days. Upon premixing albumin with thrombin and subsequently adding curcumin into the mixture improved the loading concentration and stability. Dose- and time-dependent apoptotic function of curcumin on cancer cell lines upon release from fibrin wafer, were demonstrated in vitro. In vivo immuno-modulation and a nontoxic response to curcumin released from fibrin into the peritoneal cavity of mice were established. The cytotoxic effect of released curcumin was demonstrated; showing both a preventive and therapeutic role against tumor growth. In vivo studies used Dalton's Lymphoma Ascites (DLA) mice model. Both implanted fibrin wafer and injected hydrogel can breakdown by a physiological process and get cleared by the fibrinolytic mechanism. The lyophilized fibrin wafer could function as a hemostat, adhere to surgical cancer tissues, and arrest bleeding. The potential of curcumin in preventing solid tumor metastasis may be explored upon the sustained delivery of the molecule from the fibrin wafer.

Abstract

The durability characteristics of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) with various fibers such as polypropylene and glass were investigated in view of developing composites with high resistance to cracking. ECC offer large potential for durable civil infrastructure due to their high tensile strain capacity and controlled micro-crack width. In this study, fibre volume fractions (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%) of both polypropylene and glass fibers varied and durability measures such as a rapid chloride penetration test, sorptivity, water absorption, acid attack, and sulphate attack were measured. Increasing the fiber content up to 1.5% improved the durability properties of ECC. The test results indicate that the glass fiber-reinforced Engineered Cementitious Composites have better durability characteristics than polypropylene fiber-reinforced ECC.

Abstract

An increase in the development of Industries and rapid growth in the population has led to an increase in the power demand in the distribution network. With these increased needs, the existing distribution transformer have become overloaded conditions. Due to overload on the transformer, the efficiency and power factor drops and also it led to increase in the transformer voltage regulation and windings get overheated. This paper presents a novel topology called transformer auto stop-start that will automatically energise and de-energise, one pair of transformers at a kV/V Distribution network. In this way, the proposed technique reduces overall electric losses. Performance of transformer under different load conditions are illustrated by simulation.

Abstract

Though single droplet impact dynamics was extensively investigated, the complex hydrodynamics involved in the simultaneous interaction of droplets with a loosely held dense solid particle on a hydrophobic substrate has received less attention. In this paper, the authors report the impingement response of a water droplet colliding on a non-fixed spherical steel particle placed on a hydrophobic surface and the subsequent creation of a particle-laden compound droplet. Utilizing the kinetic energy of the water drop, the heavy metal bead is picked up from the surface during the droplet bouncing. Here, a dense metal spherical mass is located on a hydrophobic substrate having contact angle, θ c = 140 ° and drop collides with a Weber number range of 8.20 ≤ We ≤ 38.07. During the droplet spreading, a thin film is developed between the particle and the hydrophobic plate due to capillary action and the particle is engulfed inside the droplet while it recoils, thereby a compound droplet is created. For instance, during the rebound of a composite drop, the metal bead, having one-third the mass of the droplet, is elevated to a height of 2.5 times its diameter at We = 24.5. Phenomenological models are developed for the prediction of compound droplet rebound height and the minimum Weber number required for the composite drop creation, and it exhibited good accord with experimental observations. These results shed more light on the self-cleaning mechanism involving dense particles and provided a promising strategy for the production of a solid–liquid composite droplet.
