We present the pc-scale radio spectra of a representative sample of 13 Palomar-Green (PG) radio-quiet quasars (RQQ), based on our new Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations at 8.4 and 23.6 GHz and our earlier VLBA studies at 1.5 and 5.0 GHz. The radio core emission generally exhibits a flat spectrum at 1.5-5.0 GHz, which indicates a compact optically thick synchrotron source with a size extending down to at least the broad-line region (BLR) radius R_BLR ~0.01-0.1 pc. In comparison, the 8.4-23.6 GHz spectral slope remains flat in four objects indicating the inner radius of the radio source R_in < 0.1 R_BLR, and becomes steep in another four objects indicating R_in ~0.5 R_BLR. The flat 8.4-23.6 GHz slope sources may be associated with a continuous flow, starting at the accretion disk corona and expanding outwards. The steep 8.4-23.6 GHz slope sources may be produced by an interaction of an AGN-driven wind with the BLR gas or a low-power jet extending to the BLR scale. The Eddington ratio L/L_Edd in seven of the eight objects with a flat or steep 8.4-23.6 GHz slope is low (< 0.3). In contrast, the L/L_Edd in four of the remaining five objects, which the 8.4-23.6 GHz slope can not be significantly constrained, is high (> 0.3), suggesting a radiation pressure driven wind. Future sub-millimeter observations can further constrain the inward radial extent of the radio emission down to the coronal scale., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Does a broad-line region (BLR) wind in radio-quiet (RQ) active galactic nuclei (AGN) extend to pc scales and produce radio emission? We explore the correlations between a pc-scale radio wind and the BLR wind in a sample of 19 RQ Palomar-Green (PG) quasars. The radio wind is defined based on the spectral slope and the compactness of the emission at 1.5-5 GHz, and the BLR wind is defined by the excess blue wing in the C IV emission line profile. The five objects with both radio and BLR wind indicators are found at high Eddington ratios L/L_Edd (> 0.66), and eight of the nine objects with neither radio nor BLR winds reside at low L/L_Edd (< 0.28). This suggests that the BLR wind and the radio wind in RQ AGN are related to a radiation pressure driven wind. Evidence for free-free absorption by AGN photoionized gas, which flattens the spectral slope, is found in two objects. Radio outflows in three low L/L_Edd (0.05-0.12) objects are likely from a low-power jet, as suggested by additional evidence. The presence of a mild equatorial BLR wind in four intermediate L/L_Edd (0.2-0.4) objects can be tested with future spectropolarimetry., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The tidal disruption of a star around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) offers a unique opportunity to study accretion onto a SMBH on a human-timescale. We present results from our 1000+ days NICER, Swift and Chandra monitoring campaign of AT 2019avd, a nuclear transient with TDE-like properties. Our primary finding is that approximately 225 days following the peak of X-ray emission, there is a rapid drop in luminosity exceeding two orders of magnitude. This X-ray drop-off is accompanied by X-ray spectral hardening, followed by a 740-day plateau phase. During this phase, the spectral index decreases from 6.2+-1.1 to 2.3+-0.4, while the disk temperature remains constant. Additionally, we detect pronounced X-ray variability, with an average fractional root mean squared amplitude of 47%, manifesting over timescales of a few dozen minutes. We propose that this phenomenon may be attributed to intervening clumpy outflows. The overall properties of AT 2019avd suggest that the accretion disk evolves from a super-Eddington to a sub-Eddington luminosity state, possibly associated with a compact jet. This evolution follows a pattern in the hardness-intensity diagram similar to that observed in stellar-mass black holes, supporting the mass invariance of accretion-ejection processes around black holes., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new high-sensitivity e-MERLIN and VLA radio images of the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 at 5, 10 and 21 GHz. We image the radio jet, from the compact components NE, C, S1 and S2 to the faint double-lobed jet structure of the NE and SW jet lobes. Furthermore, we map the jet between by combining e-MERLIN and VLA data for the first time. Components NE, C and S2 have steep spectra indicative of optically-thin non-thermal emission domination between 5 and 21 GHz. Component S1, which is where the AGN resides, has a flat radio spectrum. We report a new component, S2a, a part of the southern jet. We compare these new data with the MERLIN and VLA data observed in 1983, 1992 and 1995 and report a flux decrease by a factor of 2 in component C, suggesting variability of this jet component. With the high angular resolution e-MERLIN maps, we detect the bow shocks in the NE jet lobe that coincide with the molecular gas outflows observed with ALMA. The NE jet lobe has enough radio power considered to be responsible for driving out the dense molecular gas observed with ALMA around the same region.

The origin of the radio emission in radio-quiet quasars (RQQ) is not established yet. We present new VLBA observations at 1.6 and 4.9 GHz of ten RQQ (nine detected), which together with published earlier observations of eight RQQ (five detected), forms a representative sample of 18 RQQ drawn from the Palomar-Green sample of low z (< 0.5) AGN. The spectral slope of the integrated emission extends from very steep (alpha < -1.98) to strongly inverted (alpha = +2.18), and the slopes of nine of the 14 objects are flat (alpha > -0.5). Most objects have an unresolved flat-spectrum core, which coincides with the optical Gaia position. The extended emission is generally steep-spectrum, has a low brightness temperature (< 10^7 K), and is displaced from the optical core (the Gaia position) by ~ 5-100 pc. The VLBA core flux is tightly correlated with the X-ray flux, and follows a radio to X-ray luminosity relation of log L_R/L_X = -6, for all objects with a black hole mass log M_BH/M_Sun < 8.5. The flatness of the core emission implies a compact source size (< 0.1 pc), which likely originates from the accretion disk corona. The mas-scale extended emission is optically thin and of clumpy structure, and is likely produced by an outflow from the center. Radio observations at higher frequencies can further test the accretion disk coronal emission interpretation for the core emission in RQQ., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Radio-loud compact radio sources (CRSs) are characterised by morphological compactness of the jet structure centred on the active nucleus of the galaxy. Most of the local elliptical galaxies are found to host a CRS with nuclear luminosities lower than those of typical quasars, $\lesssim$10$^{42}\, {\rm erg\, s}^{-1}$. Recently, low-luminosity CRSs with a LINER-like optical spectrum have been named Fanaroff-Riley (FR) type 0 to highlight their lack of substantially extended radio emission at kpc scales, in contrast with the other Fanaroff-Riley classes, full-fledged FRIs and FRII radio galaxies. FR0s are the most abundant class of radio galaxies in the local Universe, and characterised by a higher core dominance, poorer Mpc-scale environment and smaller (sub-kpc scale, if resolved) jets than FRIs. However, FR0s share similar host and nuclear properties with FRIs. A different accretion-ejection paradigm from that in place in FRIs is invoked to account for the parsec-scale FR0 jets. Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are our best laboratories for studying extreme super-Eddington accretion. Most studies of these objects are of relatively persistent sources, however there is growing evidence to suggest a large fraction of these sources are transient. Here we present a sample of five newly reported transient ULXs in the galaxies NGC 4945, NGC 7793 and M81 serendipitously discovered in Swift/XRT observations. Swift monitoring of these sources have provided well sampled lightcurves, allowing for us to model the lightcurves with the disk instability model of Hameury & Lasota (2020) which implies durations of 60-400 days and that the mass accretion rate through the disk is close to or greater than the Eddington rate. Of the three source regions with prior HST imaging, color magnitude diagrams of the potential stellar counterparts show varying ages of the possible stellar counterparts. Our estimation of the rates of these sources in these three galaxies is 0.4-1.3 year$^{-1}$. We find that while persistent ULXs dominate the high end of galaxy luminosity functions, the number of systems that produce ULX luminosities are likely dominated by transient sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Legacy e-MERLIN Multi-band Imaging of Nearby Galaxies survey (LeMMINGs) is a statistically-complete census of nuclear accretion and star formation processes in the local Universe. The LeMMINGs observations at 1.5 and 5 GHz yield angular resolutions on 10s milliarcsecond-scales, with sensitivities of 10s $\mu$Jy. Awarded 810 hours of observing time, the full statistical sample (at 1.5 GHz) plus several studies of individual objects have now been published. Combined with multi-wavelength follow up observations, this survey will provide a unique legacy data set of our Galactic back yard. We present an overview of the LeMMINGs results so far, including the 1.5 GHz sample results and associated Chandra X-ray data. AT 2019avd is a nuclear transient detected from infrared to soft X-rays, though its nature is yet unclear. The source has shown two consecutive flaring episodes in the optical and the infrared bands and its second flare was covered by X-ray monitoring programs. During this flare, the UVOT/Swift photometries revealed two plateaus: one observed after the peak and the other one appeared ~240 days later. Meanwhile, our NICER and XRT/Swift campaigns show two declines in the X-ray emission, one during the first optical plateau and one 70-90 days after the optical/UV decline. The evidence suggests that the optical/UV could not have been primarily originated from X-ray reprocessing. Furthermore, we detected a timelag of ~16-34 days between the optical and UV emission, which indicates the optical likely comes from UV reprocessing by a gas at a distance of 0.01-0.03 pc. We also report the first VLA and VLBA detection of this source at different frequencies and different stages of the second flare. The information obtained in the radio band - namely a steep and a late-time inverted radio spectrum, a high brightness temperature and a radio-loud state at late times - together with the multiwavelength properties of AT 2019avd suggests the launching and evolution of outflows such as disc winds or jets. In conclusion, we propose that after the ignition of black hole activity in the first flare, a super-Eddington flaring accretion disc formed and settled to a sub-Eddington state by the end of the second flare, associated with a compact radio outflow., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. A wide-frequency radio study of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is crucial to evaluate the intervening radiative mechanisms responsible for the observed emission and relate them with the underlying accretion physics. We present wide frequency (5-45 GHz), high-sensitivity (few microJy/beam), (sub)-kpc JVLA observations of a sample of 30 nearby (0.003 < z < 0.3) AGN detected by INTEGRAL/IBIS at hard-X-ray. We find a high detection fraction of radio emission at all frequencies, i.e. > 95 per cent at 5, 10 and 15 GHz and > 80 per cent at 22 and 45 GHz. Two sources out of 30 remain undetected at our high sensitivities. The nuclear radio morphology is predominantly compact, sometimes accompanied by extended jet-like structures, or more complex features. The radio Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of the radio cores appear either as a single or as a broken power-law, a minority of them exhibits a peaked component. The spectral slopes are either flat/inverted or steep, up to a break/peak or over the whole range. The sample mean SED shows a flat slope up to 15 GHz which steepens between 15 and 22 GHz and becomes again flat above 22 GHz. Significant radio-X-ray correlations are observed at all frequencies. About half of the sample features extended emission, clearly resolved by the JVLA, indicating low-power jets or large scale outflows. The origin of radio emission in the majority of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is still poorly understood. Various competing mechanisms are likely involved in the production of radio emission and precise diagnostic tools are needed to disentangle them, of which variability is among the most powerful. For the first time, we show evidence for significant radio variability at 5 GHz at milli-arcsecond scales on days to weeks time scales in the highly accreting and extremely radio-quiet (RQ) Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) Mrk110. The simultaneous Swift/XRT light curve indicates stronger soft than hard X-ray variability. The short-term radio variability suggests that the GHz emitting region has a size smaller than ~180 Schwarzschild radii. The high brightness temperature and the radio and X-ray variability rule out a star-formation and a disc wind origin. We present the results from high-resolution observations carried out with the eMERLIN UK-array and the European VLBI network (EVN) for a sample of 15 FR0s, i.e. compact core-dominated radio sources associated with nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) which represent the bulk of the local radio galaxy population. The 5-GHz eMERLIN observations available for 5 objects exhibit sub-mJy core components, and reveal pc-scale twin jets for 4 out of 5 FR0s once the eMERLIN and JVLA archival visibilities data are combined. The 1.66-GHz EVN observations available for 10 FR0s display one- and two-sided jetted morphologies and compact cores. The pc-scale core emission contributes, on average, to about one tenth of the total extended radio emission, although we note a increasing core contribution for flat/inverted-spectrum sources. We found an unprecedented linear correlation between the pc-scale core luminosity ($\sim$10$^{21.3}$-10$^{23.6}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) and [O III] line luminosity, generally considered as proxy of the accretion power, for a large sample of LINER-type radio-loud low-luminosity active nuclei, all hosted in massive ETGs, which include FR0s and FRIs. This result represents further evidence of a common jet-disc coupling in FR0s and FRIs, despite they differ in kpc-scale radio structure. For our objects and for other FR0 samples reported in the literature, we estimate the jet brightness sidedness ratios, which typically range between 1 and 3. This parameter roughly gauges the jet bulk Lorentz factor $\Gamma$, which turns out to range between 1 and 2.5 for most of the sample. We present 150 MHz, 1.4 GHz, and 3 GHz radio imaging (LoTSS, FIRST and VLASS) and spatially resolved ionized gas characteristics (SDSS IV-MaNGA) for 140 local ($z<0.1$) early-type "red geyser" galaxies. These galaxies have low star formation activity (SFR $\sim \rm 0.01\ M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$), but show unique extended patterns in spatially-resolved emission line maps that have been interpreted as large-scale ionized winds driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN). In this work we confirm that red geysers host low-luminosity radio sources ($\rm L_{1.4GHz} \sim 10^{22} W Hz^{-1}$). Out of 42 radio-detected red geysers, 32 are spatially resolved in LoTSS and FIRST, with radio sizes varying between $\sim 5-25$ kpc. Three sources have radio sizes exceeding 40 kpc. A majority display a compact radio morphology and are consistent with either low-power compact radio sources ("FR0" galaxies) or "radio-quiet quasars". They may be powered by small-scale AGN-driven jets which remain unresolved at the current $5"$ resolution of radio data. The extended radio sources, not belonging to the "compact" morphological class, exhibit steeper spectra with a median spectral index of $-0.67$ indicating the dominance of lobed components. The red geysers hosting extended radio sources also have the lowest specific star formation rates, suggesting they either have a greater impact on the surrounding interstellar medium or are found in more massive halos on average. The degree of alignment of the ionized wind cone and the extended radio features are either 0$^{\circ}$ or 90$^{\circ}$, indicating possible interaction between the interstellar medium and the central radio AGN., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures. We present a morphological and spectral study of a sample of 99 BL Lacs using the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey Second Data Release (LDR2). Extended emission has been identified at gigahertz frequencies around BL Lacs, but with LDR2 it is now possible to systematically study their morphologies at 144 MHz, where more diffuse emission is expected. LDR2 reveals the presence of extended radio structures around 66/99 of the BL Lac nuclei, with angular extents ranging up to 115 arcseconds, corresponding to spatial extents of 410 kpc. The extended emission is likely to be both unbeamed diffuse emission and beamed emission associated with relativistic bulk motion in jets. The spatial extents and luminosities of the extended emission are consistent with the AGN unification scheme where BL Lacs correspond to low-excitation radio galaxies with the jet axis aligned along the line-of-sight. While extended emission is detected around the majority of BL Lacs, the median 144-1400 MHz spectral index and core dominance at 144 MHz indicate that the core component contributes ~42% on average to the total low-frequency flux density. A stronger correlation was found between the 144 MHz core flux density and the gamma-ray photon flux (r = 0.69) compared to the 144 MHz extended flux density and the gamma-ray photon flux (r = 0.42). This suggests that the radio-to-gamma-ray connection weakens at low radio frequencies because the population of particles that give rise to the gamma-ray flux are distinct from the electrons producing the diffuse synchrotron emission associated with spatially-extended features., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

We present the results of high signal-to-noise ratio VLT spectropolarimetry of a representative sample of 25 bright type 1 AGN at z<0.37, of which nine are radio-loud. The sample covers uniformly the 5100 A optical luminosity at $L_{5100}\sim 10^{44}-10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and H$\alpha$ width at FWHM$\sim 1000-10,000$~ km/s. We derive the continuum and the H$\alpha$ polarization amplitude, polarization angle, and angle swing across the line, together with the radio properties. We find the following: 1. The broad line region (BLR) and continuum polarization are both produced by a single scattering medium. 2. The scattering medium is equatorial, and at right angle to the system axis. 3. The scattering medium is located at or just outside the BLR. The continuum polarization and the H$\alpha$ polarization angle swing, can both serve as an inclination indicator. The observed line width is found to be affected by inclination, which can lead to an underestimate of the black hole mass by a factor of $\sim 5$ for a close-to face-on view. The line width measured in the polarized flux overcomes the inclination bias, and provides a close-to equatorial view of the BLR in all AGN, which allows to reduce the inclination bias in the BLR based black hole mass estimates., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a systematic analysis of the extended X-ray emission discovered around 35 FR II radio galaxies from the revised Third Cambridge catalog (3CR) Chandra Snapshot Survey with redshifts between 0.05 to 0.9. We aimed to (i) test for the presence of extended X-ray emission around FR II radio galaxies, (ii) investigate if the extended emission origin is due to Inverse Compton scattering of seed photons arising from the Cosmic Microwave Background (IC/CMB) or to thermal emission from an intracluster medium (ICM) and (iii) test the impact of this extended emission on hotspot detection. We investigated the nature of the extended X-ray emission by studying its morphology and compared our results with low-frequency radio observations (i.e., $\sim$150 MHz), in the TGSS and LOFAR archives, as well as with optical images from Pan-STARRS. In addition, we optimized a search for X-ray counterparts of hotspots in 3CR FR II radio galaxies. We found statistically significant extended emission ($>$3$\sigma$ confidence level) along the radio axis for $\sim$90%, and in the perpendicular direction for $\sim$60% of our sample. We confirmed the detection of 7 hotspots in the 0.5 - 3 keV. In the cases where the emission in the direction perpendicular to the radio axis is comparable to that along the radio axis, we suggest that the underlying radiative process is thermal emission from ICM. Otherwise, the dominant radiative process is likely non-thermal IC/CMB emission from lobes. We found that non-thermal IC/CMB is the dominant process in $\sim$70% of the sources in our sample, while thermal emission from the ICM dominates in $\sim$15% of them., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, ApJS accepted, pre-proof version

We explore the properties of the large-scale environment of FR0 radio galaxies belonging to the FR0CAT sample which includes 104 compact radio sources associated with nearby (z<0.05) early-type galaxies. By using various estimators we find that FR0s live in regions of higher than the average galaxies density and a factor two lower density, on average, with respect to FRI radio galaxies. This latter difference is driven by the large fraction (63%) of FR0s located in groups formed by less than 15 galaxies, an environment which FRIs rarely (17%) inhabit. Beside the lack of substantial extended radio emission defining the FR0s class, this is the first significant difference between the properties of these two populations of low power radio galaxies. We report on daily monitoring of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469, around 95 GHz and 143 GHz, with the IRAM 30 m radio telescope, and with the Swift X-Ray and UV/Optical telescopes, over an overlapping period of 45 days. The source was observed on 36 days with IRAM, and the flux density in both mm bands was on average $\sim 10$ mJy, but varied by $\pm50\%$, and by up to a factor of 2 between days. The present IRAM variability parameters are consistent with earlier CARMA monitoring, which had only 18 data points. The X-ray light curve of NGC 7469 over the same period spans a factor of 5 in flux with small uncertainties. Similar variability in the mm-band and in the X-rays lends support to the notion of both sources originating in the same physical component of the AGN, likely the accretion disk corona. Simultaneous monitoring in eight UV/optical bands shows much less variability than the mm and X-rays, implying this light originates from a different AGN component, likely the accretion disk itself. We use a tentative 14 day lag of the X-ray light curve with respect to the 95 GHz light curve to speculate on coronal implications. More precise mm-band measurements of a sample of X-ray-variable AGN are needed, preferably also on time scales of less than a day where X-rays vary dramatically, in order to properly test the physical connection between the two bands.

A supermassive black hole has been found at the centre of nearly every galaxy observed with sufficient sensitivity. The masses of these black holes are observed to increase with either the total mass or the mean (random) velocity of the stars in their host galaxies. The origin of these correlations remains elusive. Observational systematics and biases severely limit our knowledge of the local demography of supermassive black holes thus preventing accurate model comparisons and progress in this field. Here we show that the large-scale spatial distribution of local active galactic nuclei (AGN), believed to be accreting supermassive black holes, can constrain the shape and normalization of the black hole-stellar mass relation thus bypassing resolution-related observational biases. In turn, our results can set more stringent constraints on the so-called "radiative efficiency", a fundamental parameter describing the inner physics of supermassive black holes that is closely linked to their spin, geometry, and ability to release energy. The mean value of the radiative efficiency can be estimated by comparing the average total luminous output of AGN with the relic mass density locked up in quiescent supermassive black holes at galaxy centres today. For currently accepted values of the AGN obscured fractions and bolometric corrections, our newest estimates of the local supermassive black hole mass density favour mean radiative efficiencies of ~10-20\%, suggesting that the vast majority of supermassive black holes are spinning moderately to rapidly. With large-scale AGN surveys coming online, our novel methodology will enable even tighter constraints on the fundamental parameters that regulate the growth of supermassive black holes., Comment: 31 pages, 7 Figures. Using the Alternative Data Release of the TIFR GMRT Sky Survey (TGSS), we studied the low-frequency properties of FR0 radio galaxies, the large population of compact radio sources associated with red massive early-type galaxies revealed by surveys at 1.4 GHz. We considered TGSS observations from FR0CAT, a sample formed by 104 FR0s at z<0.05: all but one of them are covered by the TGSS, and 43 of them are detected above a 5 sigma limit of 17.5 mJy. No extended emission has been detected around the FR0s, corresponding to a luminosity limit of < 4 10^23 W/Hz over an area of 100 kpc x 100 kpc. All but eight FR0s have a flat or inverted spectral shape (alpha < 0.5) between 150 MHz and 1.4 GHz: this spectral behavior confirms the general paucity of optically thin extended emission within the TGSS beam, as is expected for their compact 1.4 GHz morphology. Data at 5 GHz were used to build their radio spectra, which are also generally flat at higher frequencies. By focusing on a sub-sample of FR0s with flux density > 50 mJy at 1.4 GHz, we found that ~75% of them have a convex spectrum, but with a smaller curvature than the more powerful gigahertz peaked-spectrum sources (GPS). The typical FR0s radio spectrum is better described by a gradual steepening toward high frequencies, rather than to a transition from an optically-thick to an optically-thin regime, possibly observed in only ~15% of the sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

A new class of low-power compact radio sources with limited jet structures, named FR0, is emerging from recent radio-optical surveys. This abundant population of radio galaxies, five times more numerous than FRIs in the local Universe (z$<$0.05), represent a potentially interesting target at high and very-high energies (greater than 100 GeV), as demonstrated by a single case of Fermi detection. Furthermore, these radio galaxies have been recently claimed to contribute non-negligibly to the extra-galactic $\gamma$-ray background and to be possible cosmic neutrino emitters. Here, we review the radio through X-ray properties of FR0s to predict their high-energy emission (from MeV to TeV), in light of the near-future facilities operating in this band., Comment: Review, 18 pages. We present a catalog of compact double radio galaxies (hereafter COMP2$CAT$) listing 43 edge-brightened radio sources whose projected linear size does not exceed 60 kpc, the typical size of their host galaxies. This is the fifth in a series of radio source catalogs recently created, namely: FRI$CAT$, FRII$CAT$, FR0$CAT$ and WAT$CAT$, each focused on a different class of radio galaxies. The main aim of our analysis is to attain a better understanding of sources with intermediate morphologies between FR\,IIs and FR\,0s. COMP2$CAT$ sources were selected from an existing catalog of radio sources based on NVSS, FIRST and SDSS observations for having, mainly, i) edge-brightened morphologies, typical of FR\,IIs, ii) redshifts $z < 0.15$ and iii) projected linear sizes smaller than 60 kpc. With radio luminosities at 1.4 GHz $10^{38} \lesssim L_{1.4} \lesssim 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$, COMP2$CAT$ sources appear as the low radio luminosity tail of FR\,IIs. However, their host galaxies are indistinguishable from those of large-scale radio sources: they are luminous ($-21 \gtrsim M_{r} \gtrsim -24$), red, early-type galaxies with black hole masses in the range of $10^{7.5} \lesssim M_{\rm BH} \lesssim 10^{9.5}\, \rm{M}_\odot$. Moreover, all but one of the COMP2$CAT$ sources are optically classifiable as low excitation radio galaxies, in agreement with being the low radio-power tail of FR\,Is and FR\,IIs. This catalog of compact double sources, which is $\sim 47 \%$ complete at $z<0.15$, can potentially be used to clarify the role of compact double sources in the general evolutionary scheme of radio galaxies.

We present high-sensitivity 1.51 GHz e-MERLIN radio images of the nearby galaxy NGC 6217. We resolve the compact radio source at the centre of NGC 6217 for the first time, finding a twin-lobed structure with a total linear size of ~4 arcsec (~400pc). The radio source does not have a compact central core but there is an unresolved hot spot near the outer edge of the southern lobe. Combining our e-MERLIN data with new VLA A-Array data and archival multi-wavelength data, we explore possible scenarios which might explain this complex radio morphology. We conclude that this radio source is most likely powered by a low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN) but with a possible important contribution from nuclear star formation. We also investigate the origin of a putative X-ray jet in NGC 6217, previously suggested in the literature. This `jet' consists of three X-ray `knots' in a line, pointed away from the nucleus, with a total size of ~3 arcmin (~15 kpc). We find no extended radio emission coincident with the `jet'. An additional compact radio source, aligned with the knots but without an X-ray counterpart is detected. We detect IR/optical sources falling within the X-ray extraction regions of the `knots', but note that these sources could be chance associations due to high source density around the target field and we estimate the probability of three randomly aligned X-ray sources to be 0.3 per cent in this field.

The central nuclei of galaxies, where super-massive black holes (SMBHs) are thought to reside, can experience phases of activity when they become Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). An AGN can eject winds, jets, and produce radiation across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The fraction of the bolometric emission in the radio spans a factor of ~10^5 across the different AGN classes. The weakest radio sources, radio-quiet (RQ) AGN, are typically 1,000 times fainter than the radio-loud (RL) AGN, and represent the majority of the AGN population. In RL AGN, radio emission is essentially all produced by synchrotron emission from a relativistic jet. In contrast, in RQ AGN the absence of luminous jets allows us to probe radio emission from a wide range of possible mechanisms, from the host galaxy kpc scale down to the innermost region near the SMBHs: star formation, AGN driven wind, free-free emission from photo-ionized gas, low power jet, and the innermost accretion disc coronal activity. We present HST/ACS narrow-band images of a low-z sample of 19 3C radio galaxies to study the H$\alpha$ and [OIII] emissions from the narrow-line region (NLR). Based on nuclear emission line ratios, we divide the sample into High and Low Excitation Galaxies (HEGs and LEGs). We observe different line morphologies, extended line emission on kpc scale, large [OIII]/H$\alpha$ scatter across the galaxies, and a radio-line alignment. In general, HEGs show more prominent emission line properties than LEGs: larger, more disturbed, more luminous, and more massive regions of ionized gas with slightly larger covering factors. We find evidence of correlations between line luminosities and (radio and X-ray) nuclear luminosities. All these results point to a main common origin, the active nucleus, which ionize the surrounding gas. However, the contribution of additional photoionization mechanism (jet shocks and star formation) are needed to account for the different line properties of the two classes. A relationship between the accretion, photoionization and feedback modes emerges from this study. For LEGs (hot-gas accretors), the synchrotron emission from the jet represents the main source of ionizing photons. The lack of cold gas and star formation in their hosts accounts for the moderate ionized-gas masses and sizes. For HEGs (cold-gas accretors), an ionizing continuum from a standard disk and shocks from the powerful jets are the main sources of photoionization, with the contribution from star formation. These components, combined with the large reservoir of cold/dust gas brought from a recent merger, account for the properties of their extended emission-line regions., Comment: accepted for publication on ApJ (22 pages, 12 figures)

The origin of the radio emission in Radio Quiet (RQ) quasars is not established yet. Important hints can be provided by the spectral slope, and its relation to other emission properties. We compiled the highest resolution 5 and 8.4 GHz VLA observations available of the RQ optically selected PG quasars at z<0.5. We derive the 5-8.4 GHz spectral slope, alpha_R, for 25 of the complete and well studied sample of 71 RQ PG quasars. We find a highly significant correlation of alpha_R with L/L_Edd, where high L/L_Edd (>0.3) quasars have a steep slope (alpha_R<-0.5), indicative of an optically thin synchrotron source. In contrast, lower L/L_Edd (<0.3) quasars generally have a flat slope (alpha_R>-0.5), indicative of a compact optically thick synchrotron source. Flat alpha_R quasars also have a low Fe II/Hbeta line ratio, and a flat soft X-ray slope. The 16 Radio Loud (RL) PGs do not follow the RQ quasar set of correlations, and their alpha_R is set by M_BH, suggesting that the radio emission mechanisms in RL and RQ quasars are different. A possible interpretation is that high L/L_Edd RQ quasars produce a strong outflow and an associated optically thin synchrotron emission. In lower L/L_Edd RQ quasars, the strong outflow is missing, and only a compact optically thick radio source remains, possibly associated with the accretion disk coronal emission. A systematic study of RQ quasars at higher frequencies, and higher resolution, can test whether a compact flat source indeed resides in the cores of all RQ quasars, and allow the exploration of its relation with the coronal X-ray emission., Comment: To appear in MNRAS

We present the results of Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations to study the properties of FR0 radio galaxies, the compact radio sources associated with early-type galaxies which represent the bulk of the local radio-loud AGN population. We obtained A-array observations at 1.5, 4.5, and 7.5 GHz for 18 FR0s from the FR0CAT sample: these are sources at $z<0.05$, unresolved in the FIRST images and spectroscopically classified as low excitation galaxies (LEG). Although we reach an angular resolution of $\sim$0.3 arcsec, the majority of the 18 FR0s is still unresolved. Only four objects show extended emission. Six have steep radio spectra, 11 are flat cores, while one shows an inverted spectrum. We find that 1) the ratio between core and total emission in FR0s is $\sim$30 times higher than in FRI and 2) FR0s share the same properties with FRIs from the nuclear and host point of view. FR0s differ from FRIs only for the paucity of extended radio emission. Different scenarios were investigated: 1) the possibility that all FR0s are young sources eventually evolving into extended sources is ruled out by the distribution of radio sizes; 2) similarly, a time-dependent scenario, where a variation of accretion or jet launching prevents the formation of large-scales radio structures, appears to be rather implausible due to the large abundance of sub-kpc objects 3) a scenario in which FR0s are produced by mildly relativistic jets is consistent with the data but requires observations of a larger sample to be properly tested., Comment: accepted for publication on MNRAS (12 pages, 8 figures)

We present a sub-arcsec resolution radio imaging survey of a sample of 76 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) that were previously not detected with the Very Large Array at 15 GHz. Compact, parsec-scale radio emission has been detected above a flux density of 40 $\mu$Jy in 60% (45 of 76) of the LLAGN sample. We detect 20 out of 31 (64%) low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) nuclei, ten out of 14 (71%) low-luminosity Seyfert galaxies, and 15 out of 31 (48%) transition objects. We use this sample to explore correlations between different emission lines and the radio luminosity. We also populate the X-ray and the optical fundamental plane of black hole activity and further refine its parameters. We obtain a fundamental plane relation of log L$_\textrm{R}$ = $0.48\,(\pm0.04$) log L$_\textrm{X}$ + $0.79\,(\pm0.03$) log $\textrm{M}$ and an optical fundamental plane relation of log L$_\textrm{R}$ = $0.63\,(\pm 0.05)$ log L$_{[\rm O~III]}$ + $0.67\,(\pm 0.03)$ log $\textrm{M}$ after including all the LLAGN detected at high resolution at 15 GHz, and the best-studied hard-state X-ray binaries (luminosities are given in erg s$^{-1}$ while the masses are in units of solar mass). Finally, we find conclusive evidence that the nuclear 15 GHz radio luminosity function (RLF) of all the detected Palomar Sample LLAGN has a turnover at the low-luminosity end, and is best-fitted with a broken power law. The break in the power law occurs at a critical mass accretion rate of 1.2$\times$10$^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr, which translates to an Eddington ratio of $\rm \dot m_{Edd} \sim 5.1 \times 10^{-5}$, assuming a black hole mass of 10$^9 M_{\odot}$. The local group stands closer to the extrapolation of the higher-luminosity sources, and the classical Seyferts agree with the nuclear RLF of the LLAGN in the local universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 17 pages, 8 figures

The detection of gamma-ray emission from narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1) has challenged the idea that large black hole (BH) masses ($\ge$10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$) are needed to launch relativistic jets. We present near-infrared imaging data of the gamma-ray-emitting NLSy1 PKS 1502+036 obtained with the Very Large Telescope. Its surface brightness profile, extending to $\sim$ 20 kpc, is well described by the combination of a nuclear component and a bulge with a Sersic index $n$ = 3.5, which is indicative of an elliptical galaxy. A circumnuclear structure observed near PKS 1502+036 may be the result of galaxy interactions. A BH mass of about $\sim 7 \times 10^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$ has been estimated by the bulge luminosity. The presence of an additional faint disc component cannot be ruled out with the present data, but this would reduce the BH mass estimate by only $\sim$ 30%. These results, together with analogous findings obtained for FBQS J1644+2619, indicate that the relativistic jets in gamma-ray-emitting NLSy1 are likely produced by massive black holes at the center of elliptical galaxies., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, and 2 supplementary figures. mm-wave emission from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) may hold the key to understanding the physical origin of their radio cores. The correlation between radio/mm and X-ray luminosity may suggest a similar physical origin of the two sources. Since synchrotron self absorption decreases with frequency, mm-waves probe smaller length scales than cm-waves. We report on 100 GHz (3 mm) observations with CARMA of 26 AGNs selected from the hard X-ray Swift/BAT survey. 20/26 targets were detected at 100 GHz down to the 1 mJy (3 $\sigma$) sensitivity, which corresponds to optically thick synchrotron source sizes of 10$^{-4}$ - 10$^{-3}$ pc). Most sources show a 100 GHz flux excess with respect to the spectral slope extrapolated from low frequencies. This mm spectral component likely originates from smaller scales than the few-GHz emission. The measured mm sources lie roughly around the L$_{mm}$ (100 GHz) $\sim$ 10$^{-1}$ L$_{X}$ (2-10 keV) relation, similar to a few previously published X-ray selected sources, and hinting perhaps at a common coronal origin., Comment: submitted to MNRAS, revised by the referee, comments welcome (9 pages, 4 figures)

FR0s are compact radio sources that represent the bulk of the Radio-Loud (RL) AGN population, but they are still poorly understood. Pilot studies on these sources have been already performed at radio and optical wavelengths: here we present the first X-ray study of a sample of 19 FR0 radio galaxies selected from the SDSS/NVSS/FIRST sample of Best & Heckman (2012), with redshift $\leq$ 0.15, radio size $\leq$ 10 kpc and optically classified as low-excitation galaxies (LEG). The X-ray spectra are modeled with a power-law component absorbed by Galactic column density with, in some cases, a contribution from thermal extended gas. The X-ray photons are likely produced by the jet as attested by the observed correlation between X-ray (2-10 keV) and radio (5 GHz) luminosities, similar to FRIs. The estimated Eddington-scaled luminosities indicate a low accretion rate. Overall, we find that the X-ray properties of FR0s are indistinguishable from those of FRIs, thus adding another similarity between AGN associated with compact and extended radio sources. A comparison between FR0s and low luminosity BL Lacs, rules out important beaming effects in the X-ray emission of the compact radio galaxies. FR0s have different X-ray properties with respect to young radio sources (e.g. GPS/CSS sources), generally characterized by higher X-ray luminosities and more complex spectra. We have analysed a new high-resolution e-MERLIN 1.5 GHz radio continuum map together with $HST$ and SDSS imaging of NGC 5322, an elliptical galaxy hosting radio jets, aiming to understand the galaxy's central structure and its connection to the nuclear activity. We decomposed the composite $HST$ + SDSS surface brightness profile of the galaxy into an inner stellar disc, a spheroid, and an outer stellar halo. Past works showed that this embedded disc counter-rotates rapidly with respect to the spheroid. The $HST$ images reveal an edge-on nuclear dust disc across the centre, aligned along the major-axis of the galaxy and nearly perpendicular to the radio jets. After careful masking of this dust disc, we find a central stellar mass deficit $M_{\rm def}$ in the spheroid, scoured by SMBH binaries with final mass $M_{\rm BH}$ such that $M_{\rm def}/M_{\rm BH} \sim 1.3 - 3.4$. We propose a three-phase formation scenario for NGC 5322 where a few ($2-7$) "dry" major mergers involving SMBHs built the spheroid with a depleted core. The cannibalism of a gas-rich satellite subsequently creates the faint counter-rotating disc and funnels gaseous material directly onto the AGN, powering the radio core with a brightness temperature of $T_{\rm B,core} \sim 4.5 \times 10^{7}$ K and the low-power radio jets ($P_{\rm jets}\sim 7.04 \times 10^{20}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) which extend $\sim 1.6$ kpc. The outer halo can later grow via minor mergers and the accretion of tidal debris. The low-luminosity AGN/jet-driven feedback may have quenched the late-time nuclear star formation promptly, which could otherwise have replenished the depleted core., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The discovery of $\gamma$-ray emission from radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies has questioned the need for large black hole masses (> 10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$) to launch relativistic jets. We present near-infrared data of the $\gamma$-ray-emitting NLSy1 FBQS J1644+2619 that were collected using the camera CIRCE (Canarias InfraRed Camera Experiment) at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias to investigate the structural properties of its host galaxy and to infer the black hole mass. The 2D surface brightness profile is modelled by the combination of a nuclear and a bulge component with a S\'ersic profile with index $n$ = 3.7, indicative of an elliptical galaxy. The structural parameters of the host are consistent with the correlations of effective radius and surface brightness against absolute magnitude measured for elliptical galaxies. From the bulge luminosity, we estimated a black hole mass of (2.1$\pm$0.2) $\times$10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$, consistent with the values characterizing radio-loud active galactic nuclei., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Several studies indicate that radio-loud (RL) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are produced only by the most massive black holes (BH), $M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^8$-$10^{10} M_\odot$. This idea has been challenged by the discovery of RL Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (RL NLSy1), having estimated masses of $M_{\rm BH}$$\sim$$10^6$-$10^7$ M$_\odot$. However, these low $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates might be due to projection effects. Spectropolarimetry allows us to test this possibility by looking at RL NLSy1s under a different perspective, i.e., from the viewing angle of the scattering material. We here report the results of a pilot study of VLT spectropolarimetric observations of the RL NLSy1 PKS 2004-447. Its polarization properties are remarkably well reproduced by models in which the scattering occurs in an equatorial structure surrounding its broad line region, seen close to face-on. In particular, we detect a polarized H$\alpha$ line with a width of $\sim$ 9,000 km s$^{-1}$, $\sim 6$ times broader than the width seen in direct light. This corresponds to a revised estimate of $M_{\rm BH}$$\sim$$6\times10^8$ M$_\odot$, well within the typical range of RL AGN. The double-peaked polarized broad H$\alpha$ profile of the target suggests that the rare combination of the orientation effects and a broad line region dominated by the rotation might account for this class of objects, casting doubts on the virial estimates of BH mass for type-I AGN., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication on MNRAS Letter

We present supporting evidence for the first association of a Fermi source, 3FGLJ1330.0-3818, with the FR0 radio galaxy Tol1326-379. FR0s represent the majority of the local radio loud AGN population but their nature is still unclear. They share the same properties of FRIs from the point of view of the nuclear and host properties, but they show a large deficit of extended radio emission. Here we show that FR0s can emit photons at very high energies. Tol1326-379 has a GeV luminosity of $L_{>1~{\rm GeV}} \sim 2\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, typical of FRIs, but with a steeper $\gamma$-ray spectrum ($\Gamma=2.78\pm 0.14$). Are the FRI and FRII radio galaxies representative of the radio-loud (RL) AGN population in the local Universe? Recent studies on the local low-luminosity radio sources cast lights on an emerging population of compact radio galaxies which lack extended radio emission. In a pilot JVLA project, we study the high-resolution images of a small but representative sample of this population. The radio maps reveal compact unresolved or slightly resolved radio structures on a scale of 1-3 kpc. We find that these RL AGN live in red massive early-type galaxies, with large black hole masses ($\gtrsim$10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$), and spectroscopically classified as Low Excitation Galaxies, all characteristics typical of FRI radio galaxies which they also share the same nuclear luminosity with. However, they are more core dominated (by a factor of $\sim$30) than FRIs and show a clear deficit of extended radio emission. We call these sources 'FR0' to emphasize their lack of prominent extended radio emission. A posteriori, other compact radio sources found in the literature fulfill the requirements for a FR0 classification. Hence, the emerging FR0 population appears to be the dominant radio class of the local Universe. We report short-cadence monitoring of a radio-quiet Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), NGC7469, at 95 GHz (3 mm) over a period of 70 days with the CARMA telescope. The AGN varies significantly ($\pm3\sigma$ from the mean) by a factor of two within 4-5 days. The intrinsic 95 GHz variability amplitude in excess of the measurement noise (10%) and relative to the mean flux is comparable to that in the X-rays, and much higher than at 8.4 GHz. The mm-band variability and its similarity to the X-ray variability adds to the evidence that the mm and X-ray emission have the same physical origin, and are associated with the accretion disk corona., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The physical origin of radio emission in Radio Quiet Active Galactic Nuclei (RQ AGN) remains unclear, whether it is a downscaled version of the relativistic jets typical of Radio Loud (RL) AGN, or whether it originates from the accretion disk. The correlation between 5 GHz and X-ray luminosities of RQ AGN, which follows $L_R = 10^{-5}L_X$ observed also in stellar coronae, suggests an association of both X-ray and radio sources with the accretion disk corona. Observing RQ AGN at higher (mm-wave) frequencies, where synchrotron self absorption is diminished, and smaller regions can be probed, is key to exploring this association. Eight RQ AGN, selected based on their high X-ray brightness and variability, were observed at 95 GHz with the CARMA and ATCA telescopes. All targets were detected at the $1-10$ mJy level. Emission excess at 95~GHz of up to $\times 7$ is found with respect to archival low-frequency steep spectra, suggesting a compact, optically-thick core superimposed on the more extended structures that dominate at low frequencies. Though unresolved, the 95 GHz fluxes imply optically thick source sizes of $10^{-4}-10^{-3}$ pc, or $\sim 10 - 1000$ gravitational radii. The present sources lie tightly along an $L_R$ (95 GHz) = $10^{-4}L_X$ (2$-$10 keV) correlation, analogous to that of stellar coronae and RQ AGN at 5 GHz, while RL AGN are shown to have higher $L_R / L_X$ ratios. We present the results of a pilot JVLA project aimed at studying the bulk of the radio-emitting AGN population, unveiled by the NVSS/FIRST and SDSS surveys.We obtained A-array observations at the JVLA at 1.4, 4.5, and 7.5 GHz for 12 sources of the SDSS/NVSS sample. The radio maps reveal compact unresolved or slightly resolved radio structures on a scale of 1-3 kpc, with only one exception of a FRI/FRII source extended over $\sim$40 kpc. We isolate the radio core component in most of them. The sample splits into two groups. Four sources have small black hole (BH) masses (mostly $\sim$10$^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$) and are hosted by blue galaxies, often showing evidence of a contamination from star formation to their radio emission and associated with radio-quiet AGN. The second group consists in seven radio-loud AGN, which live in red massive ($\sim10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$) early-type galaxies, with large BH masses ($\gtrsim$10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$), and spectroscopically classified as Low Excitation Galaxies, all characteristics typical of FRI radio galaxies. They also lie on the correlation between radio core power and [O III] line luminosity defined by FRIs. However, they are more core dominated (by a factor of $\sim$30) than FRIs and show a deficit of extended radio emission. We dub these sources 'FR0' to emphasize their lack of prominent extended radio emission, the single distinguishing feature with respect to FRIs. The differences in radio properties between FR0s and FRIs might be ascribed to an evolutionary effect, with the FR0 sources undergoing to rapid intermittency that prevents the growth of large scale structures. Aims. We want to study the amount of molecular gas in a sample of nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) which host low-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We look for possible differences between the radio-loud (RL) and radio-quiet (RQ) AGN. Methods. We observed the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) spectral lines with the IRAM 30m and NRO 45m telescopes for eight galaxies. They belong to a large sample of 37 local ETGs which host both RQ and RL AGN. We gather data from the literature for the entire sample. Results. We report the new detection of CO(1-0) emission in four galaxies (UGC0968, UGC5617, UGC6946, and UGC8355) and CO(2-1) emission in two of them (UGC0968 and UGC5617). The CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratio in these sources is $\sim0.7\pm0.2$. Considering both the new observations and the literature, the detection rate of CO in our sample is 55 $\pm$ 9%, with no statistically significant difference between the hosts of RL and RQ AGNs. For all the detected galaxies we converted the CO luminosities into the molecular masses, $M_{H_2}$, that range from 10$^{6.5}$ to 10$^{8.5}$ M$_{\odot}$, without any statistically significant differences between RL and RQ galaxies. This suggests that the amount of molecular gas does not likely set the radio-loudness of the AGN. Furthermore, despite the low statistical significance, the presence of a weak trend between the H$_{2}$ mass with various tracers of nuclear activity (mainly [O III] emission line nuclear power) cannot be excluded., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A, 9 pages, 5 figures

We select a sample of radio galaxies at high redshifts (z>~1) in the COSMOS field, by cross-matching optical/infrared images with the FIRST radio data. The aim of this study is to explore the high-z radio-loud (RL) AGN population at much lower luminosities than the classical samples of distant radio sources and similar to those of the local population of radio galaxies. The wide multiwavelength coverage provided by the COSMOS survey allows us to derive their Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs). The SED modeling with stellar and dust components (with our code 2SPD) returns several important quantities associated with the AGN and host properties. The final sample consists of 74 RL AGN, which extends the sample previously selected by Chiaberge et al. (2009) and studied by Baldi et al. (2013). The resulting photometric redshifts range from z~0.7 to 3. The sample mostly includes compact radio sources, but also 21 FRIIs; the radio power distribution of the sample at 1.4 GHz covers ~10^(31.5)-10^(34.3) \erg\s\Hz. The stellar mass of the hosts ranges ~10^(10)-10^(11.5) M_{sun}. The SEDs are dominated by the contribution from an old stellar population for most of the sources. UV and mid-IR (MIR) excesses are observed for half of the sample. The dust luminosities are in the range L_(dust) ~10^(43)-10^(45.5) erg/s (T ~350-1200 K). UV luminosities at 2000 A ranges ~10^(41.5)-10^(45.5) erg/s. UV emission is significantly correlated with both IR and radio luminosities, the former being the stronger link. However, the origin of UV and dust emission, whether it is produced by the AGN of by star formation, is still unclear. Our results show that this RL AGN population at high redshifts displays a wide variety of properties from possible quasars at the highest luminosities, to low-luminosity old galaxies, similarly to the local FRI-FRII dichotomy., Comment: accepted for publication on A&A, 35 pages, 13 figures, 8 tables
