The workshop on "Hadron-Hadron and Cosmic-Ray Interactions at multi-TeV Energies" held at the ECT* centre (Trento) in Nov.-Dec. 2010 gathered together both theorists and experimentalists to discuss issues of the physics of high-energy hadronic interactions of common interest for the particle, nuclear and cosmic-ray communities. QCD results from collider experiments -- mostly from the LHC but also from the Tevatron, RHIC and HERA -- were discussed and compared to various hadronic Monte Carlo generators, aiming at an improvement of our theoretical understanding of soft, semi-hard and hard parton dynamics. The latest cosmic-ray results from various ground-based observatories were also presented with an emphasis on the phenomenological modeling of the first hadronic interactions of the extended air-showers generated in the Earth atmosphere. Astrophysics - Abstract
Primary GCR interact with the Earth's atmosphere originating atmospheric showers, thus giving rise to fluxes of secondary particles in the atmosphere. Electromagnetic and hadronic interactions interplay in the production of these particles, whose detection is performed by means of complementary techniques in different energy ranges and at different depths in the atmosphere, down to the Earth's surface. Monte Carlo codes are essential calculation tools which can describe the complexity of the physics of these phenomena, thus allowing the analysis of experimental data. However, these codes are affected by important uncertainties, concerning, in particular, hadronic physics at high energy. In this paper we shall report some results concerning inclusive particle fluxes and atmospheric shower properties as obtained using the FLUKA transport and interaction code. FLUKA is a general purpose Monte Carlo transport and interaction code used for fundamental physics and for a wide range of applications. These include Cosmic Ray Physics (muons, neutrinos, EAS, underground physics), both for basic research and applied studies in space and atmospheric flight dosimetry and radiation damage. A review of the hadronic models available in FLUKA and relevant for the description of cosmic ray air showers is presented in this paper. Recent updates concerning these models are discussed. Quantum Molecular Dynamics models (QMD) are Monte Carlo approaches targeted at the description of nucleon-ion and ion-ion collisions. We have developed a QMD code, which has been used for the simulation of the fast stage of ion-ion collisions, considering a wide range of system masses and system mass asymmetries. The slow stage of the collisions has been described by statistical methods. The combination of both stages leads to final distributions of particles and fragments, which have been compared to experimental data available in literature. A few results of these comparisons, concerning neutron double-differential production cross-sections for C, Ne and Ar ions impinging on C, Cu and Pb targets at 290 - 400 MeV/A bombarding energies and fragment isotopic distributions from Xe + Al at 790 MeV/A, are shown in this paper., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publication in Adv. Heavy-ion collisions can be simulated by means of comprehensive approaches, to include the many different reaction mechanisms which may contribute. QMD models and their relativistic extensions are examples of these approaches based on Monte Carlo techniques. In this paper are shown some results obtained by coupling a new QMD code, which describes the fast stage of ion-ion collisions, to the evaporation /fission/Fermi break-up and photon de-excitation routines present in the FLUKA multipurpose Monte Carlo transport and interaction code. In particular, we compare the predicted neutron spectra to available experimental data from thin and thick target irradiations. We show also some predictions of particle and charged fragment fluences for the interaction of C and Fe ions with a thick PMMA target, which may be useful to assess the risk of side-effects in the hadron therapy of tumours., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. A new code, based on the Quantum Molecular Dynamics theoretical approach, has been developed and interfaced to the FLUKA evaporation/fission/Fermi break-up module. At present, this code is undergoing a series of validation tests. In this paper its predictions are compared to measured charged fragment yields and double differential neutron spectra in thin target heavy-ion reactions, at bombarding energies of about 100 MeV/A. The FLUKA Monte Carlo code, presently used in cosmic ray physics, contains packages to sample soft hadronic processes which are built according to the Dual Parton Model. This is a phenomenological model capable of reproducing many of the features of hadronic collisions in the non perturbative QCD regime. The basic principles of the model are summarized and, as an example, the associated Lambda-K production is discussed. In this paper we compare systematically the two-component Dual Parton Model (DPM) event generator Dpmjet-III to d-Au and p-p data from RHIC. In this process we are able to improve the model. The need for fusion of chains and a recalibration of the model to obtain collision scaling in h-A and d-A collisions was found already in previous comparisons. The main features of the FLUKA Monte Carlo code, which can deal with transport and interaction of electromagnetic and hadronic particles, are summarised. The physical models embedded in FLUKA are mentioned, as well as examples of benchmarking against experimental data. Most hadronic event generators which can be used for simulating hadronic and nuclear collisions up to the highest energies are quite similar in their construction and in the underlying theoretical concepts. At energies, where data from accelerator and collider experiments are available the models agree rather well with each other and with the most important features of the data. A new striking feature of hadron production in nuclear collisions is the large stopping of the participating nucleons in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. This enhanced baryon stopping can be understood introducing new diquark breaking mechanisms in multistring models of hadron production. A new striking feature of hadron production in nuclear collisions is the large stopping of the participating nucleons in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. This enhanced baryon stopping can be understood introducing new diquark breaking mechanisms in multistring models of hadron production. Here we show, that similar diquark breaking mechanisms occur at high energy even in hadron-hadron collisions. DPMJET samples hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus interactions at high energies. The two-component Dual Parton Model is used with multiple soft chains and multiple minijets at each elementary interaction. Particle production is realized by the fragmentation of colorless parton-parton chains constructed from the quark content of the interacting hadrons. DPMJET-II.5 includes the cascading of secondaries within the target as well as projectile nuclei which is suppressed by the formation time concept. The excitation energy of the remaining target and projectile nuclei is calculated and using this nuclear evaporation is included into the model. It is possible to use the model up to primary energies of 10${}^{21}$ eV (per nucleon) in the lab. frame. DPMJET can also be applied to neutrino nucleus collisions. It extends the neutrino-nucleon models qel (quasi elastic neutrino interactions) and lepto (deep inelastic neutrino nucleon collisions) to neutrino collisions on nuclear targets., Comment: 35 pages, LATEX using revtex.sty

A model for the production of large rapidity gaps being implemented in the Monte Carlo event generator PHOJET is discussed. In this model, high-mass diffraction dissociation exhibits properties similar to hadron production in non-diffractive hadronic collisions at high energies. Hard diffraction is described using leading-order QCD matrix elements together with a parton distribution function for the pomeron and pomeron-flux factorization. Since this factorization is imposed on Born graph level only, unitarity corrections lead to a non-factorizing flux function. Rapidity gaps between jets are obtained by soft color reconnection. It was previously shown that this model is able to describe data on diffractive hadron production from the CERN-SPS collider and from the HERA lepton-proton collider. Hadron production in single and central diffraction dissociation is studied in a model which includes soft hadron interaction as controlled by a supercritical pomeron parametrization and hard diffraction. Within this model, particle production in collisions with pomerons exhibit properties like multiple soft interactions and multiple minijets, quite similar to hadron production in non-diffractive hadronic collisions at high energies. However, important differences occur in transverse momentum jet and hadron distributions. It is shown that the model is able to describe data from the CERN-SPS collider and from the HERA collider. The status of some popular models to simulate hadronic and nuclear interactions at Cosmic Ray energies is reviewed. The models predict the rise of all the hadronic and nuclear cross sections with energy and a smooth (logarithmic) rise of average multiplicities, rapidity plateaus and average transverse momenta with the energy. The importance is stressed to put more effort into the models and especially a better understanding of the minijet component at the highest energies. In most of the models of hadronic collisions the number of exchanged colour strings grows with energy and atomic numbers of the projectile and target. At high string densities interaction between them should melt them into the quark-gluon plasma state. It is shown that under certain assumptions about the the string interaction, a phase transition to the quark gluon plasma indeed takes place in the system of many colour strings. It may be of the first or second order (percolation), depending on the particular mechanism of the interaction. The critical string density is about unity in both cases. The photon is assumed to interact in direct scattering processes or as a resolved $q\bar{q}$-state according to the Generalized Vector Dominance Model. A Dual Parton Model with a formation zone intranuclear cascade in the spectators of the projectile and target nuclei is studied. The hadrons produced in the formation zone cascade contribute to Feynman-$x_F$ and lab-$x$ distributions in the fragmentation regions of the target and projectile nuclei. We discuss the consequences of this model in the secondary cosmic ray production, by analyzing the calculated spectrum weighted moments for pion and kaon production. The cross sections for the production of hadrons in quasi-real photon-photon collisions in proton-proton and heavy ion interactions are compared with the corresponding cross sections for central diffraction and for photon-pomeron collisions. The signatures, heavy ions or protons with only slightly changed momenta together with two large rapidity gaps and a cluster of produced hadrons in the central region, are nearly identical in all three processes. Therefore, it will be rather difficult to distinguish the reactions experimentally. It is found, that central diffraction is the dominant process in collisions of protons, light and medium-heavy ions. Based on a Monte Carlo realization of the Dual Parton Model we study the production of target associated particles and of nuclear fragments in high energy hadron-nucleus interactions. A formation zone intranuclear cascade of low energy secondaries inside the target nucleus is discussed. We calculate excitation energies of residual nuclei left after the intranuclear cascade process and treat their further disintegration by introducing models for the evaporation of protons, neutrons, and light fragments, high energy fission, and by applying a Fermi Break-up model to light nuclear fragments. The results are compared to data on target associated particle production. - Abstract
Zur optimierten Vorbereitung, Anlage und Unterhaltung von Dialysezugängen für die Hämodialyse ist die enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen Operateuren, Interventionalisten und Nephrologen notwendig. Hierbei sind bei allen Beteiligten eine hohe Qualifikation und Berufserfahrung auch unabhängig von der Profession zu fordern. Die meisten Operationen und Interventionen werden hierzulande von Gefäßchirurgen und Radiologen durchgeführt. Dies kann aber zentrumsspezifisch variieren. So gibt es auch hochqualifizierte Zentren mit intervenierenden Angiologen oder Gefäßchirurgen und operierenden Nephrologen oder Allgemeinchirurgen. Die angiologischen, gefäßchirurgischen, nephrologischen und radiologischen Fachgesellschaften haben 2017 Kriterien zur Struktur‑, Prozess- und Ergebnisqualität interdisziplinärer Dialysezugangszentren festgelegt und bislang 5 regionale Shuntzentren und 10 Shuntreferenzzentren zertifiziert. Weitere 16 Zentren haben sich zur Zertifizierung angemeldet. Kernpunkte der Zertifizierung sind neben der fachlichen Qualifikation der Operateure, Interventionalisten und Nephrologen auch allgemeine Strukturen wie eine Shuntsprechstunde, regelmäßige interdisziplinäre Shuntkonferenzen und für Referenzzentren ein Shuntkoordinator, der auch für die Erfassung der Ergebnisqualität zuständig ist. Neben den in dieser Arbeit dargestellten Ergebnissen zur Struktur der Zentren werden im kommenden Jahr auch Offenheitsraten für die Anlage von nativen Shunts, Prothesenshunts und Vorhofkathetern vorliegen. For optimized preparation, placement and maintenance of a vascular access for dialysis, a close cooperation between surgeons, interventionalists and nephrologists is necessary. All participants require a high level of qualification and professional experience also independent from the profession. Most operations and interventions in Germany are carried out by vascular surgeons and radiologists but this can vary between centers. There are also highly qualified centers with angiologists or vascular surgeons performing angioplasty and operating nephrologists or general surgeons creating the fistulas. In 2017 the scientific societies for angiology, vascular surgery, nephrology and radiology have determined criteria for the quality of the structure, process and outcome of interdisciplinary dialysis access centers and so far five regional shunt centers and ten shunt reference centers have been certified. A further 16 centers have applied for certification. In addition to the specialist qualifications of the surgeon, interventionalists and nephrologists, the core elements of certification also include a out patient clinic for vascular access problems, regular interdisciplinary shunt conferences and for reference centers a shunt coordinator, who is also responsible for collecting the quality data. In addition to the results on the structure of centers presented in this article, in the coming year data on the results of the patency of native shunts, prosthetic shunts and atrial catheters will also be available.
