The model underlying physics of guiding light in single-mode fibers -- the one-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE), reveals a remarkable balance of the fiber dispersion and nonlinearity, leading to the existence of optical solitons. With the Inverse Scattering Transform (IST) method and its perturbation theory extension one can go beyond single-soliton physics and investigate nonlinear dynamics of complex optical pulses driven by soliton interactions. Here, advancing the IST perturbation theory approach, we introduce the eigenvalue response functions, which provide an intuitively clear way to manipulate individual characteristics of solitons even in the case of their entire overlapping, i.e. very strong interactions. The response functions reveal the spatial sensitivity of the multi-soliton pulse concerning its instantaneous perturbations, allowing one to manipulate the velocities and amplitudes of each soliton. Our experimental setup, based on a recirculating optical fiber loop system and homodyne measurement, enables observation of long-distance NLSE dynamics and complete characterization of optical pulses containing several solitons. Adding a localized phase perturbation on a box-shaped wavefield, we change individual soliton characteristics and can detach solitons selectively from the whole pulse. The detached solitons exhibit velocities very close to the theoretical predictions, thereby demonstrating the efficiency and robustness of the response functions approach., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We present an experimental study on the perturbed evolution of Korteweg-deVries soliton gases in a weakly dissipative nonlinear electrical transmission line. The system's dynamics reveal that an initially dense, fully randomized, soliton gas evolves into a coherent macroscopic state identified as a soliton condensate through nonlinear spectral analysis. The emergence of the soliton condensate is driven by the spatial rearrangement of the systems's eigenmodes and by the proliferation of new solitonic states due to nonadiabatic effects, a phenomenon not accounted for by the existing hydrodynamic theories.

Anomalous topological phases, where edge states coexist with topologically trivial Chern bands, can only appear in periodically driven lattices. When the driving is smooth and continuous, the bulk-edge correspondence is guaranteed by the existence of a bulk invariant known as the winding number. However, in lattices subject to periodic discrete-step walks the existence of edge states does not only depend on bulk invariants but also on the boundary. This is a consequence of the absence of an intrinsic time-dependence or micromotion in discrete-step walks. We report the observation of edge states and a simultaneous measurement of the bulk invariants in anomalous topological phases in a two-dimensional synthetic photonic lattice subject to discrete-step walks. The lattice is implemented using time multiplexing of light pulses in two coupled fibre rings, in which one of the dimensions displays real space dynamics and the other one is parametric. The presence of edge states is inherent to the periodic driving and depends on the properties of the boundary in the implemented two-band model with zero Chern number. Soliton gases represent large random soliton ensembles in physical systems that display integrable dynamics at the leading order. We report hydrodynamic experiments in which we investigate the interaction between two "beams" or "jets" of soliton gases having nearly identical amplitudes but opposite velocities of the same magnitude. The space-time evolution of the two interacting soliton gas jets is recorded in a 140-m long water tank where the dynamics is described at leading order by the focusing one-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Varying the relative initial velocity of the two species of soliton gas, we change their interaction strength and we measure the macroscopic soliton gas density and velocity changes due to the interaction. Our experimental results are found to be in good quantitative agreement with predictions of the spectral kinetic theory of soliton gas despite the presence of perturbative higher-order effects that break the integrability of the wave dynamics.

The concept of soliton gas was introduced in 1971 by V. Zakharov as an infinite collection of weakly interacting solitons in the framework of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In this theoretical construction of a diluted soliton gas, solitons with random parameters are almost non-overlapping. More recently, the concept has been extended to dense gases in which solitons strongly and continuously interact. The notion of soliton gas is inherently associated with integrable wave systems described by nonlinear partial differential equations like the KdV equation or the one-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation that can be solved using the inverse scattering transform. Over the last few years, the field of soliton gases has received a rapidly growing interest from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. In particular, it has been realized that the soliton gas dynamics underlies some fundamental nonlinear wave phenomena such as spontaneous modulation instability and the formation of rogue waves. The recently discovered deep connections of soliton gas theory with generalized hydrodynamics have broadened the field and opened new fundamental questions related to the soliton gas statistics and thermodynamics. We review the main recent theoretical and experimental results in the field of soliton gas. The key conceptual tools of the field, such as the inverse scattering transform, the thermodynamic limit of finite-gap potentials and the Generalized Gibbs Ensembles are introduced and various open questions and future challenges are discussed., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures

We present experiments performed in a recirculating fiber loop in which we realize the single-shot observation of the space and time interaction of two and three bright solitons. The space-time evolutions observed in experiments provide clear evidence of a nearly-integrable nonlinear wave dynamics that can be easily interpreted within the framework of the inverse scattering transform (IST) method. In particular collisions between solitons are found to be almost perfectly elastic in the sense that they occur without velocity change and with only a position (time) shift quantitatively well described by numerical simulations of the integrable nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. Additionally our experiments provide the evidence that the position (time) shifts arising from the interaction among three solitons are determined by elementary pairwise interactions, as it is well known in the IST theory.

We report an optical fiber experiment in which we investigate the interaction between an individual soliton and a dense soliton gas. We evidence a refraction phenomenon where the tracer soliton experiences an effective velocity change due to its interaction with the optical soliton gas. This interaction results in a significant spatial shift that is measured and compared with theoretical predictions obtained via the inverse scattering transform (IST) theory. The effective velocity change associated with the refraction phenomenon is found to be in good quantitative agreement with the results of the spectral kinetic theory of soliton gas. Our results validate the collision rate ansatz that plays a fundamental role in the kinetic theory of soliton gas and also is at heart of generalized hydrodynamics of many-body integrable systems.

We experimentaly investigate higher-order seeded modulation instability in an optical fiber experiment. The recirculating loop configuration with round-trip losses compensation enables the observation in single-shot of the spatio-temporal evolution of an initially modulated continuous field revealing intricate yet deterministic dynamics. By tuning the modulation period, a continuous transition between perfectly coherent and purely noise-driven dynamics is observed that we characterise by means of a statistical study.

The engineering of synthetic materials characterised by more than one class of topological invariants is one of the current challenges of solid-state based and synthetic materials. Using a synthetic photonic lattice implemented in a two-coupled ring system we engineer an anomalous Floquet metal that is gapless in the bulk and shows simultaneously two different topological properties. On the one hand, this synthetic lattice presents bands characterised by a winding number. The winding emerges from the breakup of inversion symmetry and it directly relates to the appearance of Bloch suboscillations within its bulk. On the other hand, the Floquet nature of the lattice results in well-known anomalous insulating phases with topological edge states. The combination of broken inversion symmetry and periodic time modulation studied here enrich the variety of topological phases available in lattices subject to Floquet driving and suggest the possible emergence of novel phases when periodic modulation is combined with the breakup of spatial symmetries., Comment: Published version. Peregrine soliton (PS) is widely regarded as a prototype nonlinear structure capturing properties of rogue waves that emerge in the nonlinear propagation of unidirectional wave trains. As an exact breather solution of the one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions, the PS can be viewed as a soliton on finite background, i.e. a nonlinear superposition of a soliton and a monochromatic wave. A recent mathematical work showed that both nonzero boundary conditions and solitonic content are not pre-requisites for the PS occurrence. Instead, it has been demonstrated that PS can emerge locally, as an asymptotic structure arising from the propagation of an arbitrary large decaying pulse, independently of its solitonic content. This mathematical discovery has changed the widely accepted paradigm of the solitonic nature of rogue waves by enabling the PS to emerge from a partially radiative or even completely solitonless initial data. In this work, we realize the mathematically predicted universal mechanism of the local PS emergence in a water tank experiment with a particular aim to control the point of the PS occurrence in space-time by imposing an appropriately chosen initial chirp. By employing the inverse scattering transform for the synthesis of the initial data, we are able to engineer a localized wave packet with a prescribed solitonic and radiative content. This enabled us to control the position of the emergence of the rogue wave by adjusting the inverse scattering spectrum. The proposed method of the nonlinear spectral engineering is found to be robust to higher-order nonlinear effects inevitable in realistic wave propagation conditions.

The concept of Nonlinear dispersion relation (NDR) is used in various fields of Physics (nonlinear optics, hydrodynamics, hydroelasticity, mechanics, quantum optics, plasma physics,...) to characterize fundamental phenomena induced by nonlinearity such as wave frequency shift or turbulence. Nonlinear random waves described by the onedimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (1DNLSE) exhibit a remarkable form of turbulence called "integrable turbulence" where solitons play a key role. Surprisingly, little attention has been paid to the NDR of such universal wave systems up to a very recent theoretical study. Here, by using an original strategy, we report the accurate measurement of NDR of the slowly varying envelop of the waves in one-dimensional deep water waves experiments. We characterize precisely the frequency shift and the broadening of the NDR, which interestingly reveals the presence of solitons and of high order effects. Floquet-Bloch lattices are systems in which wave packets are subjet to periodic modulations both in time and space, showing rich dynamics. While this type of lattices is difficult to implement in solid-state physics, optical systems have provided excellent platforms to probe their physics: among other effects, they have revealed genuine phenomena such as the anomalous Floquet topological insulator and the funnelling of light into localised interface modes. Despite the crucial importance of the band dispersion in the photon dynamics and the topological properties of the lattice, the direct experimental measurement of the Floquet-Bloch bands has remained elusive. Here we report the direct measurement of the Floquet-Bloch bands of a photonic lattice with a single shot method. We use a system of two coupled fibre rings that implements a time-multiplexed Floquet-Bloch lattice. By Fourier transforming the impulse response of the lattice we obtain the band structure together with an accurate characterization of the lattice eigenmodes, i. e. the amplitudes and the phases of the Floquet-Bloch eigenvectors over the entire Brillouin zone. Our results open promising perspectives for the observation of topological effects in the linear and nonlinear regime in Floquet systems.

We numerically realize breather gas for the focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. This is done by building a random ensemble of N $\sim$ 50 breathers via the Darboux transform recursive scheme in high precision arithmetics. Three types of breather gases are synthesized according to the three prototypical spectral configurations corresponding the Akhmediev, Kuznetsov-Ma and Peregrine breathers as elementary quasi-particles of the respective gases. The interaction properties of the constructed breather gases are investigated by propagating through them a "trial" generic breather (Tajiri-Watanabe) and comparing the mean propagation velocity with the predictions of the recently developed spectral kinetic theory (El and Tovbis, PRE 2020).

Soliton gases represent large random soliton ensembles in physical systems that display integrable dynamics at the leading order. Despite significant theoretical developments and observational evidence of ubiquity of soliton gases in fluids and optical media their controlled experimental realization has been missing. We report the first controlled synthesis of a dense soliton gas in deep-water surface gravity waves using the tools of nonlinear spectral theory (inverse scattering transform (IST)) for the one-dional focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. The soliton gas is experimentally generated in a one-dimensional water tank where we demonstrate that we can control and measure the density of states, i. e. the probability density function parametrizing the soliton gas in the IST spectral phase space. Nonlinear spectral analysis of the generated hydrodynamic soliton gas reveals that the density of states slowly changes under the influence of perturbative higher-order effects that break the integrability of the wave dynamics.

We report water wave experiments performed in a long tank where we consider the evolution of nonlinear deep-water surface gravity waves with the envelope in the form of a large-scale rectangular barrier. Our experiments reveal that, for a range of initial parameters, the nonlinear wave packet is not disintegrated by the Benjamin-Feir instability but exhibits a specific, strongly nonlinear modulation, which propagates from the edges of the wavepacket towards the center with finite speed. Using numerical tools of nonlinear spectral analysis of experimental data we identify the observed envelope wave structures with focusing dispersive dam break flows, a peculiar type of dispersive shock waves recently described in the framework of the semi-classical limit of the 1D focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation (1D-NLSE). Our experimental results are shown to be in a good quantitative agreement with the predictions of the semi-classical 1D-NLSE theory. We propose a generic scattering matrix model implementable in photonics to engineer a new Floquet metallic phase that combines two distinct topological properties: the winding of the bulk bands and the existence of robust chiral edge states. The winding of the bulk bands gives rise to a wavepacket oscillations in real space while conserving its initial momentum. We investigate theoretically the fundamental phenomenon of the spontaneous, noise-induced modulational instability (MI) of a plane wave. The long-term statistical properties of the noise-induced MI have been previously observed in experiments and in simulations but have not been explained so far. In the framework of inverse scattering transform (IST), we propose a model of the asymptotic stage of the noise-induced MI based on $N$-soliton solutions ($N$-SS) of the integrable focusing one-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (1D-NLSE). These $N$-SS are bound states of strongly interacting solitons having a specific distribution of the IST eigenvalues together with random phases. We use a special approach to construct ensembles of multi-soliton solutions with statistically large number of solitons $N\sim100$. Our investigation demonstrates complete agreement in spectral (Fourier) and statistical properties between the long-term evolution of the condensate perturbed by noise and the constructed multi-soliton bound states. Our results can be generalised to a broad class of integrable turbulence problems in the cases when the wave field dynamics is strongly nonlinear and driven by solitons.

We present an optical fiber experiment in which we examine the space-time evolution of a modulationally unstable plane wave initially perturbed by a small noise. Using a recirculating fiber loop as experimental platform, we report the single-shot observation of the noise-driven development of breather structures from the early stage to the long-term evolution of modulation instability. Performing single-point statistical analysis of optical power recorded in the experiments, we observe decaying oscillations of the second-order moment together with the exponential distribution in the long term evolution, as predicted in [D.\,S. Agafontsev and V.\,E. Zakharov, Nonlinearity {\bf 28}, 2791 (2015)]. Finally, we demonstrate experimentally and numerically that the autocorrelation of the optical power $g^{(2)}(\tau)$ exhibits some unique oscillatory features typifying the nonlinear stage of the noise-driven modulation instability and of integrable turbulence

We examine statistical properties of integrable turbulence in the defocusing and focusing regimes of one-dimensional small-dispersion nonlinear Schrodinger equation (1D-NLSE). Specifically, we study the 1D-NLSE evolution of partially coherent waves having Gaussian statistics at time t=0. Using short time asymptotic expansions and taking advantage of the scale separation in the semi-classical regime we obtain a simple explicit formula describing an early stage of the evolution of the fourth moment of the random wave field amplitude, a quantitative measure of the "tailedness" of the probability density function. Our results show excellent agreement with numerical simulations of the full 1D-NLSE random field dynamics and provide insight into the emergence of the well-known phenomenon of heavy (resp. low) tails of the statistical distribution emerging in the focusing (resp. defocusing) regime of 1D-NLSE., Comment: 10 pages

The data recorded in optical fiber [1] and in hydrodynamic [2] experiments reported the pioneering observation of nonlinear waves with spatiotemporal localization similar to the Peregrine soliton are examined by using nonlinear spectral analysis. Our approach is based on the integrable nature of the one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation (1D-NLSE) that governs at leading order the propagation of the optical and hydrodynamic waves in the two experiments. Nonlinear spectral analysis provides certain spectral portraits of the analyzed structures that are composed of bands lying in the complex plane. The spectral portraits can be interpreted within the framework of the so-called finite gap theory (or periodic inverse scattering transform). In particular, the number N of bands composing the nonlinear spectrum determines the genus g = N - 1 of the solution that can be viewed as a measure of complexity of the space-time evolution of the considered solution. Within this setting the ideal, rational Peregrine soliton represents a special, degenerate genus 2 solution. While the fitting procedures employed in [1] and [2] show that the experimentally observed structures are quite well approximated by the Peregrine solitons, nonlinear spectral analysis of the breathers observed both in the optical fiber and in the water tank experiments reveals that they exhibit spectral portraits associated with more general, genus 4 finite-gap NLSE solutions. Moreover, the nonlinear spectral analysis shows that the nonlinear spectrum of the breathers observed in the experiments slowly changes with the propagation distance, thus confirming the influence of unavoidable perturbative higher order effects or dissipation in the experiments.

We report an optical fiber experiment in which we study nonlinear stage of modulational instability of a plane wave in the presence of a localized perturbation. Using a recirculating fiber loop as experimental platform, we show that the initial perturbation evolves into expanding nonlinear oscillatory structure exhibiting some universal characteristics that agree with theoretical predictions based on integrability properties of the focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. Our experimental results demonstrate persistence of the universal evolution scenario, even in the presence of small dissipation and noise in an experimental system that is not rigorously of an integrable nature.

Temporal imaging systems are outstanding tools for single-shot observation of optical signals that have irregular and ultrafast dynamics. They allow long time windows to be recorded with femtosecond resolution, and do not rely on complex algorithms. However, simultaneous recording of amplitude and phase remains an open challenge for these systems. Here we present a new heterodyne time-lens arrangement that efficiently records both the amplitude and phase of complex signals, while keeping the performances of classical time-lens systems ($\sim 200$~fs) and field of view (tens of ps). Phase and time are encoded onto the two spatial dimensions of a camera. We demonstrate direct application of our heterodyne time lens to turbulent-like optical fields and optical rogue waves generated from nonlinear propagation of partially coherent waves inside optical fibres. We also show how this phase-sensitive time-lens system enables digital temporal holography to be performed with even higher temporal resolution (80 fs)., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Rogue waves are extreme and rare fluctuations of the wave field that have been discussed in many physical systems. Their presence substantially influences the statistical properties of an incoherent wave field. Their understanding is fundamental for the design of ships and offshore platforms. Except for very particular meteorological conditions, waves in the ocean are characterised by the so-called JONSWAP (Joint North Sea Wave Project) spectrum. Here we compare two unique experimental results: the first one has been performed in a 270-meter wave tank and the other in optical fibers. In both cases, waves characterised by a JONSWAP spectrum and random Fourier phases have been launched at the input of the experimental device. The quantitative comparison, based on an appropriate scaling of the two experiments, shows a very good agreement between the statistics in hydrodynamics and optics. Spontaneous emergence of heavy tails in the probability density function of the wave amplitude is observed in both systems. The results demonstrate the universal features of rogue waves and provide a fundamental and explicit bridge between two important fields of research. Numerical simulations are also compared with experimental results.

We examine integrable turbulence (IT) in the framework of the defocusing cubic one-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation. This is done theoretically and experimentally, by realizing an optical fiber experiment in which the defocusing Kerr nonlinearity strongly dominates linear dispersive effects. Using a dispersive-hydrodynamic approach, we show that the development of IT can be divided into two distinct stages, the initial, pre-breaking stage being described by a system of interacting random Riemann waves. We explain the low-tailed statistics of the wave intensity in IT and show that the Riemann invariants of the asymptotic nonlinear geometric optics system represent the observable quantities that provide new insight into statistical features of the initial stage of the IT development by exhibiting stationary probability density functions.

The formation of coherent structures in noise driven phenomena and in Turbulence is a complex and fundamental question. A particulary important structure is the so-called Rogue Wave (RW) that arises as the sudden appearance of a localized and giant peak. First studied in Oceanography, RWs have been extensively investigated in Optics since 2007, in particular in optical fibers experiments on supercontinua and optical turbulence. However the typical time scales underlying the random dynamics in those experiments prevented --up to now-- the direct observation of isolated RWs. Here we report on the direct observation of RWs, using an ultrafast acquisition system equivalent to microscope in the time domain. The RWs are generated by nonlinear propagation of random waves inside an optical fiber, and recorded with $\sim 250$~fs resolution. Our experiments demonstrate the central role played by "breathers-like" solutions of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (1D-NLSE) in the formation of RWs

The nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE) stands out as the dispersive nonlinear partial differential equation that plays a prominent role in the modeling and understanding of the wave phenomena relevant to many fields of nonlinear physics. The question of random input problems in the one-dimensional and integrable NLSE enters within the framework of integrable turbulence, and the specific question of the formation of rogue waves (RWs) has been recently extensively studied in this context. The determination of exact analytic solutions of the focusing 1D-NLSE prototyping RW events of statistical relevance is now considered as the problem of central importance. Here we address this question from the perspective of the inverse scattering transform (IST) method that relies on the integrable nature of the wave equation. We develop a conceptually new approach to the RW classification in which appropriate, locally coherent structures are specifically isolated from a globally incoherent wave train to be subsequently analyzed by implementing a numerical IST procedure relying on a spatial periodization of the object under consideration. Using this approach we extend the existing classifications of the prototypes of RWs from standard breathers and their collisions to more general nonlinear modes characterized by their nonlinear spectra., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We report optical fiber experiments allowing to investigate integrable turbulence in the focusing regime of the one dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (1D-NLSE). Our experiments are very similar in their principle to water tank experiments with random initial conditions (see M. Onorato {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. E {\bf 70} 067302 (2004)). Using an original optical sampling setup, we measure precisely the probability density function (PDF) of optical power of partially coherent waves rapidly fluctuating with time. The PDF is found to evolve from the normal law to a strong heavy-tailed distribution, thus revealing the formation of rogue waves in integrable turbulence. Numerical simulations of 1D-NLSE with stochastic initial conditions reproduce quantitatively the experiments. Our investigations suggest that the statistical features experimentally observed rely on the stochastic generation of coherent analytic solutions of 1D-NLSE such as Peregrine solitons., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We study theoretically the accuracy of the method based on the Fourier property of lenses that is commonly used for the far field measurement. We consider a simple optical setup in which the far-field intensity pattern of a light beam passing through a Kerr medium is recorded by a CCD camera located in the back focal plane of a thin lens. Using Fresnel diffraction formula and numerical computations, we investigate the influence of a slight longitudinal mispositioning of the CCD camera. Considering a coherent gaussian beam, we show that a tiny error in the position of the CCD camera can produce a narrowing of the transverse pattern instead of the anticipated and well-understood broadening. This phenomenon is robust enough to persist for incoherent beams strongly modified by the presence of noise. The existence of this phenomenon has important consequences for the design and the realization of experiments in the field of optical wave turbulence in which equilibrium spectra reached by incoherent waves can only be determined from a careful far-field analysis. In particular, the unexpected narrowing of the far field may be mistaken for the remarkable phenomenon of classical condensation of waves. Finally, we show that the finite-size of optical components used in experiments produces diffraction patterns having wings decaying in a way comparable to the Rayleigh-Jeans distribution reached by incoherent wave systems at thermodynamical equilibrium.
