Abstract

The elastic and break-up angular distributions of the 10,11Be+64Zn reactions measured at Ec.m.≈1.4 VC have been analysed within the CCDC and O.M. frameworks. The suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference, observed in the 11Be scattering case with respect to the 10Be, has been interpreted as due to a long range absorption owing to the coupling with the break-up (Coulomb and nuclear) channels. The presence of 10Be events on the 11Be experiment data have been explained as due mainly to break-up processes.

Abstract

We measured elastic scattering angular distributions and cross sections for heavy residue production for the systems 6,7Li+64Zn at different energies around the Coulomb barrier. The elastic scattering angular distributions have been reproduced by optical model fits using a renormalized double folding potential for the real and imaginary parts. Absence of usual threshold anomaly in the optical potential was found. The excitation functions for heavy residue production were measured using an activation technique. Comparison with different calculations suggest that complete fusion is the dominant reaction mechanism above the barrier whereas, below the Coulomb barrier, incomplete fusion and transfer dominate.

Abstract

Abstract

The collision induced by the three Beryllium isotopes, 9,10,11Be, on a 64Zn target were investigated at Ec.m. ≈ 1.4 the Coulomb barrier. The experiments with the radioactive 10,11Be beams were performed at the Rex-Isolde facility at CERN. In the case of 9,10Be, elastic scattering angular distributions were measured whereas, in the 11Be case, the quasielastic scattering angular distribution was obtained. A strong damping of the quasielastic cross-section was observed in the 11Be case, in the angular range around the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak. In this latter case a large total-reaction cross-section is found. Such a cross-section is more than a factor of two larger than the ones extracted in the reactions induced by the non-halo Beryllium isotopes. A large contribution to the total-reaction cross-section in the 11Be case could be attributed to transfer and/or break-up events.

Abstract

Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated $^{14}$O was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound $^{15}$F nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at E$\_R$=4.757(6)(10)~MeV with a width of $\Gamma$=36(5)(14)~keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a $^{12}$C core and three valence protons. Abstract

While the 12C(a,g)16O reaction plays a central role in nuclear astrophysics, the cross section at energies relevant to hydrostatic helium burning is too small to be directly measured in the laboratory. The beta-delayed alpha spectrum of 16N can be used to constrain the extrapolation of the E1 component of the S-factor; however, with this approach the resulting S-factor becomes strongly correlated with the assumed beta-alpha branching ratio. We have remeasured the beta-alpha branching ratio by implanting 16N ions in a segmented Si detector and counting the number of beta-alpha decays relative to the number of implantations. Our result, 1.49(5)e-5, represents a 24% increase compared to the accepted value and implies an increase of 14% in the extrapolated S-factor.

Abstract

The low-lying level structure of the unbound neutron-rich nucleus $^{13}$Be has been investigated via breakup on a carbon target of secondary beams of $^{14,15}$B at 35 MeV/nucleon. The coincident detection of the beam velocity $^{12}$Be fragments and neutrons permitted the invariant mass of the $^{12}$Be+$n$ and $^{12}$Be+$n$+$n$ systems to be reconstructed. In the case of the breakup of $^{15}$B, a very narrow structure at threshold was observed in the $^{12}$Be+$n$ channel. Contrary to earlier stable beam fragmentation studies which identified this as a strongly interacting $s$-wave virtual state in $^{13}$Be, analysis here of the $^{12}$Be+$n$+$n$ events demonstrated that this was an artifact resulting from the sequential-decay of the $^{14}$Be(2$^+$) state. Single-proton removal from $^{14}$B was found to populate a broad low-lying structure some 0.70 MeV above the neutron-decay threshold in addition to a less prominent feature at around 2.4 MeV. Based on the selectivity of the reaction and a comparison with (0-3)$\hbar\omega$ shell-model calculations, the low-lying structure is concluded to most probably arise from closely spaced J$^\pi$=1/2$^+$ and 5/2$^+$ resonances (E$_r$=0.40$\pm$0.03 and 0.85$^{+0.15}_{-0.11}$ MeV), whilst the broad higher-lying feature is a second 5/2$^+$ level (E$_r$=2.35$\pm$0.14 MeV). Taken in conjunction with earlier studies, it would appear that the lowest 1/2$^+$ and 1/2$^-$ levels lie relatively close together below 1 MeV., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. 13. Spectroscopy of He 7 using the Be 9 (He 6, Be 8) transfer reaction

F. Renzi et al. ; 11 pags., 10 figs., 3 tabs., The unbound nucleus He7 has been investigated via the reaction of a 16.8 MeV He6 radioactive ion beam on a Be9 target. The measurement of the outgoing Be8 through its well characterized two-α decay permitted the energy of the He6+n system to be reconstructed. Through comparison with a complete Monte Carlo simulation incorporating R-matrix lineshapes, the He7 ground state was determined to lie 0.380(28) MeV above the neutron decay with a width of Γ=0.179(21) MeV. A neutron spectroscopic factor SF=0.608(18) was extracted in agreement with the most recent calculations. Significant evidence was found for a broad resonance lying at 2.6(2) MeV above threshold with a ΓFWHM=2.3(3) MeV. These parameters are fully consistent with the properties of 1/2- state reported by Wuosmaa et al. [Phys. Rev. C 72, 061301(R) (2005)PRVCAN0556-281310.1103/PhysRevC.72.061301]. Abstract

The ν g 9 / 2 , d 5 / 2 , s 1 / 2 orbitals are assumed to be responsible for the swift onset of collectivity observed in the region below 68Ni. Especially the single-particle energies and strengths of these orbitals are of importance. We studied such properties in the nearby 67Ni nucleus, by performing a ( d , p ) -experiment in inverse kinematics employing a post-accelerated radioactive ion beam (RIB) at the REX-ISOLDE facility. The experiment was performed at an energy of 2.95 MeV/u using a combination of the T-REX particle detectors, the Miniball γ-detection array and a newly-developed delayed-correlation technique as to investigate μs-isomers. Angular distributions of the ground state and multiple excited states in 67Ni were obtained and compared with DWBA cross-section calculations, leading to the identification of positive-parity states with substantial ν g 9 / 2 (1007 keV) and ν d 5 / 2 (2207 keV and 3277 keV) single-particle strengths up to an excitation energy of 5.8 MeV. 50% of the ν d 5 / 2 single-particle strength relative to the ν g 9 / 2 -orbital is concentrated in and shared between the first two observed 5 / 2 + levels. A comparison with extended Shell Model calculations and equivalent (3He, d) studies in the region around 9040Zr50 highlights similarities for the strength of the negative-parity pf and positive-parity g 9 / 2 state, but differences are observed for the d 5 / 2 single-particle strength.

Abstract

The νg9/2,d5/2,s1/2 orbitals are assumed to be responsible for the swift onset of collectivity observed in the region below 68 Ni. Especially the single-particle energies and strengths of these orbitals are of importance. We studied such properties in the nearby 67 Ni nucleus, by performing a (d,p) -experiment in inverse kinematics employing a post-accelerated radioactive ion beam (RIB) at the REX-ISOLDE facility. The experiment was performed at an energy of 2.95 MeV/u using a combination of the T-REX particle detectors, the Miniball γ -detection array and a newly-developed delayed-correlation technique as to investigate μs-isomers. Angular distributions of the ground state and multiple excited states in 67 Ni were obtained and compared with DWBA cross-section calculations, leading to the identification of positive-parity states with substantial νg9/2 (1007 keV) and νd5/2 (2207 keV and 3277 keV) single-particle strengths up to an excitation energy of 5.8 MeV. 50% of the νd5/2 single-particle strength relative to the νg9/2 -orbital is concentrated in and shared between the first two observed 5/2+ levels. A comparison with extended Shell Model calculations and equivalent ( 3 He, d ) studies in the region around 90 40 Zr 50 highlights similarities for the strength of the negative-parity pf and positive-parity g9/2 state, but differences are observed for the d5/2 single-particle strength.

Abstract

Background: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem autoimmune disease which is classified into a diffuse cutaneous (dcSSc) and a limited cutaneous (lcSSc) subset according to the skin involvement. In order to better understand the vascular, immunological and fibrotic processes of SSc and to guide its treatment the EULAR Scleroderma Trials And Research (EUSTAR) group was formed in June 2004. Aims and Methods: EUSTAR collects prospectively the Minimal Essential Data Set (MEDS) on all sequential patients fulfilling the ACR diagnostic criteria in participating centres. We aimed to characterize demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics of disease presentation in SSc and analysed EUSTAR baseline visits. Results: In April 2006, a total of 3656 patients (1349 with dcSSc and 2101 with lcSSc) were enrolled in 102 centres and 30 countries. 1330 individuals had autoantibodies against Scl70 and 1106 against anticentromere antibodies. 87% of patients were female. On multivariate analysis, scleroderma subsets (dcSSc vs. lcSSc), antibody status and age at onset of Raynaud’s phenomenon, but not gender were independently associated with the prevalence of organ manifestations. Autoantibody status in this analysis appeared more closely associated with clinical manifestations than were SSc subsets. Conclusion: dcSSc and lcSSc subsets are associated with particular organ manifestations, but in this analysis the clinical distinction appeared superseded by an antibody based classification in predicting some scleroderma complications. The EUSTAR MEDS data base facilitates the analysis of clinical patterns in SSc and contributes to the standardised assessment and monitoring of SSc internationally.

Abstract

Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated O-14 was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound F-15 nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at E-R = 4.757(6)(10) MeV with a width of Gamma = 36(5)(14) keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a C-12 core and three valence protons. It is found that it is an almost pure wave function of two quasi-bound protons in the 2s(1/2) shell. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Excitation functions for the production of heavy residues have been measured for the collisions 6, 7Li+64Zn at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier. The cross sections for heavy residue production have been measured using an activation technique, detecting off-line the characteristic atomic x-rays emitted in the electron capture decay of the reaction products. The experimental relative yields of the residues have been compared with statistical model calculations performed by using the code cascade. Such a comparison suggests that heavy residue production is dominated by complete fusion at above-barrier energies, whereas different processes like incomplete fusion and/or transfer become dominant in the sub-barrier energy region. The heavy residue excitation function ratio between the 6Li- and 7Li-induced collisions shows an increasing trend as the energy decreases below the barrier.

Abstract

The quasi-elastic scattering angular distribution of the collision 11Be + 64Zn was measured and compared with the elastic scattering angular distribution for its core, the 10Be nucleus on the same target. Optical model and continuum-discretized coupled-channel calculations of the 11Be+64Zn reaction were performed in order to interpret the effect of coupling with the break-up channels on the measured cross-sections.

Abstract

Two-neutron transfer to $^{9}$Li will populate the ground state of $^{11}$Li as well as low-lying resonances in a way that is complementary to studies of these states performed at higher beam energies. We aim at detecting the charged particles from the transfer reactions as well as neutrons coming from the decay of possible $^{11}$Li resonances.

Abstract

In this paper details of the experimental procedure and data analysis of the collision of 11Be +64Zn around the Coulomb barrier are described and discussed in the framework of different theoretical approaches. In a previous work, the elastic scattering angular distribution of the collisions 9 ,10Be +64Zn as well as the angular distribution for the quasielastic scattering and transfer/breakup cross sections for the 11Be +64Zn reaction were briefly reported. The suppression of the quasielastic angular distribution in the Coulomb-nuclear interference angular region observed in the collision of the 11Be halo nucleus with respect to the other two beryllium isotopes was interpreted as being caused by a long-range absorption owing to the long decay length of the 11Be wave function. In this paper, new continuum-discretized coupled-channel calculations of the 11Be +64Zn reaction are reported in the attempt to interpret the effect of coupling with the breakup channels on the measured cross sections. The calculations show that the observed suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak is caused by a combined effect of Coulomb and nuclear couplings to the breakup channels., The authors wish to thank Dr. A. Abstract

The unbound systems 10;12Li and 13Be have been studied via nucleon removal from a 14B beam of 35 MeV/nucleon. The invariant mass (decay energy) spectra were reconstructed from the measured 9;11Li-n and 12Be-n coincidences. Simulations, taking into account the effects of the experimental setup and the reaction, were developed. The reconstructed decay energy spectra were interpreted using theoretical lineshapes folded with the experimental response, as well as uncorrelated distributions obtained from the data by event mixing. In the case of 10Li, the data were reproduced with an s-wave virtual state of scattering length (foumule) confirming the v1p1=2 - v2s1=2 inversion. For 12Li, evidence was found for excited states between 0:2 and 0:8 MeV above the threshold. In the case of 13Be, the decay energy, as well as the other observables, were reproduced assuming an (formule). This hypothesis is supported by the selectivity of proton knockout, whereby the neutron configuration of the states populated in 13Be should directly reflect that of 14B.; Les systèmes non liés 10;12Li et 13Be ont été étudiés par des réactions de perte d'un ou plusieurs nucléons à partir d'un faisceau de 14B à 35 MeV/nucléon. Abstract

Collisions induced by $^{9}$Be, $^{10}$Be, $^{11}$Be on a $^{64}$Zn target at the same c. m. energy were studied. For the first time, strong effects of the $^{11}$Be halo structure on elastic-scattering and reaction mechanisms at energies near the Coulomb barrier are evidenced experimentally. The elastic-scattering cross section of the $^{11}$Be halo nucleus shows unusual behavior in the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak angular region. The extracted total-reaction cross section for the $^{11}$Be collision is more than double the ones measured in the collisions induced by $^{9}$Be, $^{10}$Be. It is shown that such a strong enhancement of the total-reaction cross section with $^{11}$Be is due to transfer and breakup processes.

Abstract

The 12C(13C, α)21Ne reaction has been measured with a 13C beam energy of 20 MeV. States in 21Ne have been populated between 0 and 12 MeV with a resolution of ~350 keV (FWHM). A coincidence experiment has been performed in which either the bound 21Ne nucleus or the 20Ne nucleus produced via neutron decay is detected. This permitted the 21Ne states undergoing gamma decay and neutron decay to the ground and first excited states in 20Ne to be determined. The current measurements suggest several errors in the current compilation for 21Ne.
