3. LAN Interconnection by Satellite --- A Literature Review

Abstract

In this report we give an overview on experiments interconnecting LANs by satellite, which are reported in the technical literature. Most reported scientific experiments have been performed in Europe and Japan, whereas in the USA a more application oriented, commercial approach seems to have been taken. In this report, we briefly describe several projects, such as the French NADIR, the European STELLA, UNIVERSE and SATINE-2, some experiments performed by the European Space Agency ESA, such as PRODAT and CODE as well as a special internetworking experiment. We also mention some Japanese and a Canadian project.

4. Admission Control Schemes for Spot-Beam Satellite Networks

Abstract

In this report, we consider communication networks with a satellite with multiple spot beams. We describe the structure and features of these networks, and we consider admission control schemes which optimize the network revenue if several services types with different revenues are present. We show that in some cases the blocking of some calls even if capacity is available can considerably increase the network revenue. We will point out, however, that complete sharing, i.e., accepting calls on a first- come, first-served basis, is optimum for systems with similar traffic types.

Abstract

Wilson's disease is a rare inherited disorder of copper metabolism. If left untreated, the disorder has a fatal course within a few years after symptom onset. If discovered early, effective treatment is available, preventing further clinical deterioration and leading to a normal life expectancy. Accumulation of copper in liver and brain can lead to a variety of unspecific hepatic, neurologic and psychiatric symptoms such as jaundice, tremor, ataxia or depression. In patients under the age of 40 with unexplained hepatic, neurologic or psychiatric symptoms, Wilson's disease must be considered. Diagnosis can be made by measurement of urinary copper excretion and other tests as required. Lifelong decoppering treatment must be maintained. For the detection of deterioration of the disease or adverse effects of the medication as well as for the assessment of therapeutic compliance, regular clinical controls are necessary. Abstract

The mechanisms leading to disability and the long-term efficacy and safety of disease modifying drugs (DMDs) in multiple sclerosis (MS) are unclear. We aimed at building a prospective cohort of MS patients with standardized collection of demographic, clinical, MRI data and body fluids that can be used to develop prognostic indicators and biomarkers of disease evolution and therapeutic response. The Swiss MS Cohort (SMSC) is a prospective observational study performed across seven Swiss MS centers including patients with MS, clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), radiologically isolated syndrome or neuromyelitis optica. Neurological and radiological assessments and biological samples are collected every 6-12 months. We recruited 872 patients (clinically isolated syndrome [CIS] 5.5%, relapsing-remitting MS [RRMS] 85.8%, primary progressive MS [PPMS] 3.5%, secondary progressive MS [SPMS] 5.2%) between June 2012 and July 2015. We performed 2,286 visits (median follow-up 398 days) and collected 2,274 serum, plasma and blood samples, 152 cerebrospinal fluid samples and 1,276 brain MRI scans. 158 relapses occurred and expanded disability status scale (EDSS) scores increased in PPMS, SPMS and RRMS patients experiencing relapses. Most RRMS patients were treated with fingolimod (33.4%), natalizumab (24.5%) or injectable DMDs (13.6%). The SMSC will provide relevant information regarding DMDs efficacy and safety and will serve as a comprehensive infrastructure available for nested research projects.

Abstract

Der Morbus Wilson ist eine seltene vererbte Störung des Kupferstoffwechsels, die unbehandelt innert wenigen Jahren nach Symptombeginn zum Tod führt. Die rechtzeitige Diagnose ermöglicht eine Behandlung, die Organschäden vorbeugt und zu einer normalen Lebenserwartung führt. Kupferablagerungen in Leber und Hirn können zu oft wenig spezifischen hepatischen, neurologischen und psychiatrischen Symptomen wie Ikterus, Tremor, Koordinationsstörungen und Depressionen führen. Bei unerklärten hepatischen, neurologischen und psychiatrischen Symptomen bei Patienten unter 40 Jahren muss immer an einen Morbus Wilson gedacht werden. Die Abklärung erfolgt mittels Bestimmung der Kupferausscheidung im 24-Stunden-Urin und allenfalls weiterer Untersuchungen. Nach Diagnosestellung eines Morbus Wilson muss eine lebenslange entkupfernde Behandlung eingeleitet werden. Dabei sind regelmässige klinische Kontrollen zur Erkennung von Komplikationen, unerwünschten Medikamentenwirkungen und Compliance-Problemen notwendig.
