Abstract

Machine learning (ML) models have demonstrated discriminative and representative learning capabilities over a wide range of applications, even at the cost of high-computational complexity. Due to their parallel processing capabilities, reconfigurability, and low-power consumption, systems on chip based on a field programmable gate array (SoC/FPGA) have been used to face this challenge. Nevertheless, SoC/FPGA devices are resource-constrained, which implies the need for optimal use of technology for the computation and storage operations involved in ML-based inference. Consequently, mapping a deep neural network (DNN) architecture to a SoC/FPGA requires compression strategies to obtain a hardware design with a good compromise between effectiveness, memory footprint, and inference time. This letter presents an efficient end-to-end workflow for deploying DNNs on an SoC/FPGA by integrating hyperparameter tuning through Bayesian optimization (BO) with an ensemble of compression techniques. Abstract

Extensive research has been conducted in image forensics on the analysis of double-compressed images, particularly in the widely adopted JPEG format. However, there is a lack of methods to detect double compression in the HEIF format, which has recently gained popularity since it allows for reduced file size while maintaining image quality. Traditional JPEG-based techniques do not apply to HEIF due to its distinct encoding algorithms. We previously proposed a method to detect double compression in HEIF images based on Farid's work on coding ghosts in JPEG images. However, this method was limited to scenarios where the quality parameter used for the first encoding was larger than for the second encoding. In this study, we propose a lightweight image classifier to extend the existing model, enabling the identification of double-compressed images without heavily depending on the input image's quantization history. This extended model outperforms the previous approach and, despite its lightness, demonstrates excellent detection accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, a method for estimating the blur regions of an image is first proposed, resorting to a mixture of linear and nonlinear convolutional kernels. The blur map obtained is then utilized to enhance images such that the enhancement strength is an inverse function of the amount of measured blur. The blur map can also be used for tasks such as attention‐based object classification, low light image enhancement, and more. A CNN architecture is trained with nonlinear upsampling layers using a standard blur detection benchmark dataset, with the help of blur target maps. Further, it is proposed to use the same architecture to build maps of areas affected by the typical JPEG artifacts, ringing and blockiness. The blur map and the artifact map pair permit to build an activation map for the enhancement of a (possibly JPEG compressed) image. Extensive experiments on standard test images verify the quality of the maps obtained using the algorithm and their effectiveness in locally controlling the enhancement, for superior perceptual quality. Abstract

This brief presents an application-specific instruction-set processor (ASIP) for real-time Retinex image and video filtering. Design optimizations are addressed at algorithmic and architectural levels, the latter including a dedicated memory structure, an adapted pipeline, bypasses, a custom address generator and special looping structures. Synthesized in CMOS technology, the ASIP stands for its better energy-flexibility tradeoff versus reference ASIC and digital signal processing Retinex implementations. Abstract

A comprehensive computational model of the human visual system has been developed to predict just-noticeable differences between a pair of stimuli. The stimuli are provided as high-dynamic-range, multichannel images, containing accurate spectral and photometric description of the scene. In this work, we extend such a model to determine the effect of age on the sensitivity of the visual system. The extensions are based on the existing models of disability glare, aging of the crystalline lens, and reduced pupil size with age (senile miosis). We con fi rm fi ndings from other studies that those optical effects cannot fully explain the effect of aging, and we attribute the remaining drop of sensitivity to neural changes. The complete model, including an empirical neural component, can well explain the differences in contrast sensitivity between old and young observers.
