Abstract

Los análisis laboratoriales son una buena herramienta, como soporte en los diagnósticos para los dictámenes de no aptitud al consumo humano de carnes, en el matadero. En general son externos y en este caso (son informes histopatológicos) fueron realizados por la Unidad docente de Histologia i Anatomia Patològica de la Facultat de Veterinària de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Se presentan informes histopatológicos de muestras de equinos, rumiantes, cerdos y aves, solicitados en el período 1989-1996., Les anàlisis laboratorials són una bona eina, com a suport en els diagnòstics per als dictàmens de no aptitud al consum humà de carns, a l'escorxador. En general són externs i en aquest cas (són informes histopatològics) foren realizats per la Unitat docent d'Histologia i Anatomia Patològica, de la Facultat de Veterinària de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Es presenten informes histopatològics de mostres d'equins, remugants, porcs i aus, sol·licitats en el període 1989-1996.

Abstract

The most common cardiac tumors of heart muscle are rhabdomyomas, solitary or multiple benign tumors of striated muscle origin. While cardiac rhabdomyomas are well described in human medical literature, limited information depicting the occurrence of cardiac rhabdomyomas in veterinary species exists. A case of multiple firm white nonencapsulated nodules in the heart of a bearded seal is described. Microscopic findings included cytoplasmic vacuolization with formation of spider cells, glycogen vacuoles, and striated myofibrils. These cells expressed immunoreactivity for neuron-specific enolase and protein gene product 9.5, a marker for neuronal tissue and Purkinje fiber cells. Immunoreactivity for protein gene product 9.5 along with other microscopic findings substantiates Purkinje fiber cell origin of the cardiac rhabdomyoma in the bearded seal and use of the term purkinjeoma to describe this lesion.

Abstract

Macroscopic. histolog ic . ultrastruc tural. microbiologic. ill sirll hybridi za ti on (ISH ) and PCR detection results in three 8-week-old pi gs naturall y infected with Pllel.llllonsris c{lrinii (PC) are described . All an imals had a nonsu ppurati ve interstitial pneumoni a and intra-alveolar PlleulIlucysris organisms with foamy eos in ophili c and PAS positi ve appearance . Ultrastructurally. PC trophozoites and cysts we re observed in pigs No.2 and NO .3. with the fo rmer being much more numerous. PC organisms we re located on the alveolar surface or within the alveolar septa . Trophozoites had numerous filopodia and were thin-wall ed. Cysts had no o r few filopodia. we re thick- wa ll ed and co nt a ined intracysti c bodies. Using non-isotopic ISH on formalinfixed. paraffin-embedded lung tissue sections. PC DNA from pigs No.2 and No . 3 hyb ridi zed with a probe specific for PC ribosomal RNA (rRNA). Using primers spec ific for mit oc ho ndrial rRNA ge ne (pA Z I0 2- E/pAZ I 02-H). and for the interna l transcriber space rs of ribosomal gene of PC. PCR methods amplified a product in the lung of pigs No.2 and No.3 using either frozen or formalin -fi xed and paraffin -embedded lung tissue. DNA from Pig No. I samples did not amplify with any primer. This is the first time that molecular biology techniques (ill siru hybridi zation and PCR) have been applied to the study of porc ine pneumocystosis.

Abstract

Papillomas of the conjunctival surface in people can be of viral or nonviral origin and are found in high association with human papillomavirus. Canine conjunctival papillomas are seldom described, and published accounts have mostly been associated with canine oral papillomavirus infection. Here, we describe conjunctival squamous papillomas that do not express papillomavirus proteins and compare them with papillomavirus-associated conjunctival papillomas. Conjunctival squamous papillomas presented a distinct histopathologic profile and lacked the cytopathic effects seen in viral papillomas. They appeared as exophytic, papilliferous, pedunculated lesions with delicate fronds and angular terminal margins. Squamous papillomas presented with a delicate fibrovascular core and were associated both clinically and grossly with a feeder vessel. Pigmentation was variable within the epithelium and stroma of these lesions, and inflammatory infiltrates were characteristically minimal. Conjunctival squamous papillomas resembled squamous papillomas of the skin; however, they lacked significant hyperkeratosis. Compared with conjunctival viral papillomas, these masses occurred in older dogs and were smaller and solitary. Furthermore, polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry failed to demonstrate papillomavirus genetic material and antigens in conjunctival squamous papillomas.
