1. On $G$-character tables for normal subgroups

Abstract

Let $N$ be a normal subgroup of a finite group $G$. From a result due to Brauer, it can be derived that the character table of $G$ contains square submatrices which are induced by the $G$-conjugacy classes of elements in $N$ and the $G$-orbits of irreducible characters of $N$. In the present paper, we provide an alternative approach to this fact through the structure of the group algebra. We also show that such matrices are non-singular and become a useful tool to obtain information of $N$ from the character table of $G$.

Abstract

This letter illustrates the opinion of the molecular dynamics (MD) community on the need to adopt a new FAIR paradigm for the use of molecular simulations. It highlights the necessity of a collaborative effort to create, establish, and sustain a database that allows findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability of molecular dynamics simulation data. Such a development would democratize the field and significantly improve the impact of MD simulations on life science research. Abstract

A presente pesquisa tem como objetivos: (a) compreender como foram elaborados os projetos político-pedagógicos (PPPs) de quatro escolas de ensino fundamental, públicas, localizadas em um município do sudoeste da Bahia, e (b) conhecer como é abordada a temática educação ambiental (EA) nas matrizes curriculares desses projetos. Foram analisados quatro PPPs, de quatro escolas municipais que atendem aos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental. Além disso, foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com 27 professores. O estudo é de natureza qualitativa, descritiva e exploratória. Foi realizada análise documental dos PPPs e, ainda, a categorização dos textos desses documentos, utilizando-se o software IRAMUTEQ. A triangulação dos dados foi realizada segundo Minayo (2010). Dos quatro PPPs analisados, três apresentam matrizes curriculares que contemplam a temática EA sob uma perspectiva conservacionista, e um aborda a inserção da EA em uma perspectiva socioambiental

5. Running beyond ALPs: shift-breaking and CP-violating effects

Abstract

We compute the renormalization group equations (RGEs) of the Standard Model effective field theory (EFT) extended with a real scalar singlet, up to dimension-five and one-loop accuracy. We compare our renormalization results with those found in the shift-symmetry preserving limit, which characterizes axion-like particles (ALPs). The matching and running equations below the electroweak scale are also obtained, including the mixing effects in the scalar sector. Such mixing leads to interesting phenomenological consequences that are absent in the EFT at the renormalizable level, namely new correlations among the triplet and quartic Higgs couplings are predicted. All RGEs obtained in this work are implemented in a new Mathematica package - ALPRunner, together with functions to solve the running numerically for an arbitrary set of UV parameters. As an application, we obtain the improved electric dipole moment constraints on particular regions of the singlet parameter space, and quantify the level of shift-breaking in these regions., Comment: 35 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables

14. The QCD axion sum rule

Abstract

We demonstrate that the true QCD axion that solves the strong CP problem can be found in all generality outside the customary standard QCD band, with QCD being the sole source of Peccei-Quinn breaking. The essential reason is that the basis of axion-gluon interactions does not need to coincide with the mass basis. Specifically, we consider the case in which the QCD axion field is not the only singlet scalar in Nature but it mixes with other singlet scalars (besides the $\eta'$). We determine the exact mathematical condition for an arbitrary $N$-scalar potential to be Peccei-Quinn invariant. Such potentials provide extra sources of mass for the customary axion without enlarging the Standard Model gauge symmetry. The contribution to the axion mass stemming from the QCD topological susceptibility is shown to be shared then among the $N$ axion eigenstates through a precise sum rule. Their location can only be displaced to the right of the standard QCD band. We demonstrate that the axion closest to this band can be displaced from it by a factor of $\sqrt{N}$ at most, and this corresponds to the case in which all axion signals are maximally deviated. Conversely, if one axion is found on the standard QCD band, the other eigenstates will be out of experimental reach. Our results imply that any ALP experiment which finds a signal outside the standard QCD axion band can be solving the strong CP problem within QCD, with the associated $N-1$ excitations to be found in an area of parameter space that we determine. 15. Orientations to Happiness and University Students' Engagement during the COVID-19 Era: Evidence from Six American Countries

Abstract

Positive personal characteristics such as happiness or wellbeing can motivate students to elevate their school performance in higher education. Orientation to happiness is a construct that combines three sources of happiness: pleasure, meaning, and engagement, all of which have been identified as a predictor of university students' engagement. However, most research in this area has been conducted during ideal situations or face-to-face education, and no crosscountry research has been published examining the relationship between these two concepts during the COVID-19 era, where online education was predominant. This study aimed to investigate the relation between orientation to happiness and student engagement after twelve months of distance education in a sample of 1723 students from six American countries, including the USA, Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. Results indicate that university students' engagement is influenced by the orientation to happiness. Further implications of these results are discussed.

16. Transversal Competences and Employability: The Impacts of Distance Learning University According to Graduates' Follow-Up

Abstract

Since higher education qualifications and digital transition are considered key factors for economic development and individual opportunities, distance learning has been presented as a solution to improve the labor force's skills and employability. However, such links were seldom studied systematically in specific contexts, and doubts exist regarding online programs. Based on the results of three successive follow-up surveys to the graduates of the Portuguese distance learning public university ("Universidade Aberta"), from 2011 to 2018 (n = 1358), our article examines the graduates' perception of acquired transversal competences, in relation to employability and social mobility gains. The statistical analysis points out a positive perception of transversal competences development, especially analytical capacity, autonomy, and communication, although some concerns were raised regarding digital skills, teamwork, job search skills, and social capital. The impacts on employability and socioeconomic mobility are positive for most students, but variable according to analyzed competences, and tend to occur mostly through internal mobility rather than through job search skills or entrepreneurship. Although exploratory, such findings allow some final considerations regarding the effective ability of higher education distance learning to enhance economic growth and employability, through transversal competences, as well as to sketch some suggestions to improve such ability.

Abstract

Dans l’actualité des pays développés, les questions de l’environnement sont devenues une préoccupation centrale. Par l’effet de l’adoption de stratégies de développement durable, les relations entre formation, emploi et environnement sont à l’ordre du jour. Les politiques actives de l’emploi mettent en place des programmes spécifiques de formation pour la protection et la gestion de l’environnement, afin de répondre aux nouvelles compétences requises. Le système de formation a un rôle décisif dans la satisfaction des besoins de qualifications, d’où la nécessité de définir des professions stratégiques et des formations prioritaires, en faisant une gestion anticipée des compétences et des qualifications. L’environnement est un déterminant important de la santé. Le besoin d’améliorer la prise en compte de l’impact environnemental des systèmes de production sur les conditions de travail et la formation, se fait sentir. Ce sont des aspects sociaux et éthiques importants de la société et de la responsabilité sociale des entreprises et des citoyens, visant la poursuite d’un développement durable qui respecte l’environnement naturel et améliore la qualité de vie. La promotion de la pluridisciplinarité constitue une étape importante pour l’amélioration de la prévention des risques. La problématique des risques sanitaires, du travail et de l’environnement doit être améliorée. La participation des spécialistes des différentes sciences humaines et sociales est importante pour la promotion du développement durable, étant donné qu’il y a beaucoup à faire, notamment dans les domaines de la communication et de l’éducation.

19. Neutral $B$-anomalies from an $\mathit{on\text{-}shell}$ scalar exchange

Abstract

The neutral $B$-anomalies are analysed in terms of the tree-level exchange of a (pseudo)scalar gauge singlet $a$. Solutions to both $R_{K^{(*)}}$ central bin anomalies are found within $1\sigma$ for ${m_{a}^2 \in [{1.1},\,{6}]\,\text{GeV}^2}$, while the low $q^2$-bin anomaly can also be accounted for with masses close to the bin threshold. The impact of these solutions on other ${b\to s e^+ e^-}$ observables is discussed in detail. Due to the $\mathit{on\text{-}shell}$ enhancement, sizable effects are expected in null tests of the SM, such as the flat term, $F_H$, of the $B\to K e^+ e^-$ angular distribution. At the same time, the observable sensitive to the $K^\ast$ polarisation, $F_L\, (B\to K^* e^+ e^-)$, and the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, ${A_{FB}\, (B\to K^* e^+ e^-)}$, can be suppressed with respect to their SM values. Corrections from the new physics to $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to e^+ e^-)$ are, on the other hand, negligible. Along with the previous observables, improved measurements of the cross section ${\sigma (e^+ e^- \to a (e^+ e^-) \gamma)}$ could potentially probe the relevant parameter space of the model. A comparison between our results and those stemming from an axion-like particle exchange is also discussed, showing that the exchange of a general scalar singlet offers a noticeably wider parameter space., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

This paper reports a study of the experimental signatures of hierarchical sectors beyond the Standard Model characterized by a flavor-violating heavy vector and a set of light pseudo-Goldstone bosons $a_{1,2}$, spanning a large range of lifetimes. The non-minimal scalar spectrum triggers novel $B$ decays into multiple leptons that would have escaped the reach of current searches. Novel displaced vertex analyses at LHCb are therefore discussed to probe the hierarchical new physics, extending the scope of the tracking system of the detector. Additionally, the reach of the proposed CODEX-b experiment is studied as well. By exploiting the use of tracks only reconstructed in subsystems of the detector at the high-level LHCb trigger, ${\mathcal{B}(B_s^0\to a_1 a_2) < 10^{-8}}$ and ${\mathcal{B}(B^+\to K^+ a_1 a_2) < 10^{-9}}$ could be reached in the muon channel across seven orders of magnitude in the lifetime of the Goldstone bosons. Correspondingly, heavy-light particle couplings of order $\lesssim 1$ could be tested, potentially ruling out composite Higgs scenarios where the heavy and light sectors couple strongly., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures and an appendix with two chapters, submitted to JHEP

Abstract

BackgroundPeople who inject drugs living with HIV (PWIDLH) suffer the lowest rates of HIV viral suppression due to episodic injection drug use and poor mental health coupled with poor retention in HIV care. Approximately 44% of PWIDLH along the US-Mexico border are retained in care and only 24% are virally suppressed. This underserved region faces a potential explosion of transmission of HIV due to highly prevalent injection drug use. This protocol describes an optimization trial to promote sustained viral suppression among Spanish-speaking Latinx PWIDLH.MethodsThe multiphase optimization strategy (MOST) is an engineering-inspired framework for designing and building optimized interventions and guides this intervention. The primary aim is to conduct a 24 factorial experiment in which participants are randomized to one of 16 intervention conditions, with each condition comprising a different combination of four behavioral intervention components. The components are peer support for methadone uptake and persistence; behavioral activation therapy for depression; Life-Steps medication adherence counseling; and patient navigation for HIV care. Participants will complete a baseline survey, undergo intervention, and then return for 3-,6-,9-, and 12-month follow-up assessments. Abstract

We report on an hybrid in-beam PET and prompt-gamma Compton imaging system aimed at quasi real-time ion-range verification in proton-therapy treatments. Proof-of-concept experiments were carried out at the radiobiology beam line of the CNA cyclotron facility using a set of two synchronous Compton imagers and different target materials. The time structure of the 18~MeV proton beam was shaped with a series of beam-on and beam-off intervals, thereby mimicking a pulsed proton beam on a long time scale. During beam-on intervals, Compton imaging was performed utilizing the high energy $\gamma$-rays promptly emitted from the nuclear reactions occurring in the targets. In the course of the beam-off intervals in-situ positron-emission tomography was accomplished with the same imagers using the $\beta^{+}$ decay of activated nuclei. The targets used were stacks of different materials covering also various proton ranges and energies. A systematic study on the performance of these two complementary imaging techniques is reported and the experimental results interpreted on the basis of Monte Carlo calculations. The results demonstrate the possibility to combine both imaging techniques in a concomitant way, where high-efficiency prompt-gamma imaging is complemented with the high spatial accuracy of PET. Empowered by these results we suggest that a pulsed beam with a suitable duty cycle, in conjunction with in-situ Compton- and PET-imaging may help to attain complementary information and quasi real-time range monitoring with high accuracy.
