Abstract

Federated Learning (FL) has become an attractive approach to collaboratively train Machine Learning (ML) models while data sources' privacy is still preserved. However, most of existing FL approaches are based on supervised techniques, which could require resource-intensive activities and human intervention to obtain labelled datasets. Furthermore, in the scope of cyberattack detection, such techniques are not able to identify previously unknown threats. In this direction, this work proposes a novel unsupervised FL approach for the identification of potential misbehavior in vehicular environments. We leverage the computing capabilities of public cloud services for model aggregation purposes, and also as a central repository of misbehavior events, enabling cross-vehicle learning and collective defense strategies. Our solution integrates the use of Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) and Variational Autoencoders (VAE) on the VeReMi dataset in a federated environment, where each vehicle is intended to train only with its own data. Furthermore, we use Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBM) for pre-training purposes, and Fedplus as aggregation function to enhance model's convergence. Abstract

Federated Learning (FL) represents a promising approach to typical privacy concerns associated with centralized Machine Learning (ML) deployments. Despite its well-known advantages, FL is vulnerable to security attacks such as Byzantine behaviors and poisoning attacks, which can significantly degrade model performance and hinder convergence. The effectiveness of existing approaches to mitigate complex attacks, such as median, trimmed mean, or Krum aggregation functions, has been only partially demonstrated in the case of specific attacks. Our study introduces a novel robust aggregation mechanism utilizing the Fourier Transform (FT), which is able to effectively handling sophisticated attacks without prior knowledge of the number of attackers. Employing this data technique, weights generated by FL clients are projected into the frequency domain to ascertain their density function, selecting the one exhibiting the highest frequency. Consequently, malicious clients' weights are excluded. Abstract

We characterize isometric actions whose principal orbits are hypersurfaces through the existence of a linear connection satisfying a set of covariant equations in the same spirit as the Ambrose-Singer Theorem for homogeneous space. These results are then used to describe isometric cohomogeneity one foliations in terms of such connections. Finally, we provide explicit examples of these objects in Euclidean spaces and real hyperbolic spaces.

11. At the edge of shape coexistence in the Z=40 region

Abstract

In this contribution, the shape coexistence phenomenon near the proton sub-shell closure at Z=40 is analyzed. Particular emphasis is placed on extracting the nuclear deformation values by examining experimental B(E2) transition rates and observing how the kinematic moment of inertia evolves in these nuclei. Based on the analysis of these two observables, we arrive at the conclusion that the notable effects of shape coexistence at approximately Z=40 are largely diminished in Mo isotopes and are scarcely detectable in Ru isotopes., Comment: To appear in the CGS-17 2023 proceedings, 3 pages

Abstract

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is envisioned as one of the key enablers of next-generation wireless systems, offering improved hardware, spectral, and energy efficiencies. In this paper, we consider an ISAC transceiver with an impaired uniform linear array that performs single-target detection and position estimation, and multiple-input single-output communications. A differentiable model-based learning approach is considered, which optimizes both the transmitter and the sensing receiver in an end-to-end manner. An unsupervised loss function that enables impairment compensation without the need for labeled data is proposed. Semi-supervised learning strategies are also proposed, which use a combination of small amounts of labeled data and unlabeled data. Our results show that semi-supervised learning can achieve similar performance to supervised learning with 98.8% less required labeled data., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Accepted to ICMLCN 2024

Abstract

The evolution of cybersecurity is undoubtedly associated and intertwined with the development and improvement of artificial intelligence (AI). As a key tool for realizing more cybersecure ecosystems, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) have evolved tremendously in recent years by integrating machine learning (ML) techniques for the detection of increasingly sophisticated cybersecurity attacks hidden in big data. However, these approaches have traditionally been based on centralized learning architectures, in which data from end nodes are shared with data centers for analysis. Recently, the application of federated learning (FL) in this context has attracted great interest to come up with collaborative intrusion detection approaches where data does not need to be shared. Due to the recent rise of this field, this work presents a complete, contemporary taxonomy for FL-enabled IDS approaches that stems from a comprehensive survey of the literature in the time span from 2018 to 2022. Precisely, our discussion includes an analysis of the main ML models, datasets, aggregation functions, as well as implementation libraries, which are employed by the proposed FL-enabled IDS approaches. On top of everything else, we provide a critical view of the current state of the research around this topic, and describe the main challenges and future directions based on the analysis of the literature and our own experience in this area.

14. Model-Based End-to-End Learning for Multi-Target Integrated Sensing and Communication

Abstract

We study model-based end-to-end learning in the context of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) under hardware impairments. A monostatic orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) sensing and multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication scenario is considered, incorporating hardware imperfections at the ISAC transceiver antenna array. To enable end-to-end learning of the ISAC transmitter and sensing receiver, we propose a novel differentiable version of the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm that is suitable for multi-target sensing. Based on the differentiable OMP, we devise two model-based parameterization strategies to account for hardware impairments: (i) learning a dictionary of steering vectors for different angles, and (ii) learning the parameterized hardware impairments. For the single-target case, we carry out a comprehensive performance analysis of the proposed model-based learning approaches, a neural-network-based learning approach and a strong baseline consisting of least-squares beamforming, conventional OMP, and maximum-likelihood symbol detection for communication. Results show that learning the parameterized hardware impairments offers higher detection probability, better angle and range estimation accuracy, lower communication symbol error rate (SER), and exhibits the lowest complexity among all learning methods. Lastly, we demonstrate that learning the parameterized hardware impairments is scalable also to multiple targets, revealing significant improvements in terms of ISAC performance over the baseline., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to JSTSP

Abstract

In response to globalisation, and the cultural, socio-economic, and educational changes it implies, higher education must offer a comprehensive education that favours personal and professional growth. To do this, it must promote competence-based learning through active teaching methodologies. This study will analyse the use of Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodologies in the context of transversal subjects, as an efficient technique to develop interpersonal communication and teamworking skills. This research is quasi-experimental, with a pre-test/post-test design with an equivalent control group. The sample consists of 610 university students from the Community of Madrid, of whom 387 participated in the PBL (Experimental Group: EG) and 223 did not (Control Group: CG). A reliable and validated questionnaire on personal competences was used as a measurement instrument. The hypotheses on the effectiveness of PBL as a technique for the development of interpersonal communication and teamworking skills in the context of transversal subjects are confirmed. The results suggest that greater use of active methodologies to promote the development of transversal or generic competences is highly recommended and that the insertion of transversal subjects into university curricula may be highly beneficial.

26. Model-Driven End-to-End Learning for Integrated Sensing and Communication

Abstract

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is envisioned to be one of the pillars of 6G. However, 6G is also expected to be severely affected by hardware impairments. Under such impairments, standard model-based approaches might fail if they do not capture the underlying reality. To this end, data-driven methods are an alternative to deal with cases where imperfections cannot be easily modeled. In this paper, we propose a model-driven learning architecture for joint single-target multi-input multi-output (MIMO) sensing and multi-input single-output (MISO) communication. We compare it with a standard neural network approach under complexity constraints. Results show that under hardware impairments, both learning methods yield better results than the model-based standard baseline. If complexity constraints are further introduced, model-driven learning outperforms the neural-network-based approach. 27. The smooth output assumption, and why deep networks are better than wide ones

Abstract

When several models have similar training scores, classical model selection heuristics follow Occam's razor and advise choosing the ones with least capacity. Yet, modern practice with large neural networks has often led to situations where two networks with exactly the same number of parameters score similar on the training set, but the deeper one generalizes better to unseen examples. With this in mind, it is well accepted that deep networks are superior to shallow wide ones. However, theoretically there is no difference between the two. In fact, they are both universal approximators. In this work we propose a new unsupervised measure that predicts how well a model will generalize. We call it the output sharpness, and it is based on the fact that, in reality, boundaries between concepts are generally unsharp. We test this new measure on several neural network settings, and architectures, and show how generally strong the correlation is between our metric, and test set performance. Having established this measure, we give a mathematical probabilistic argument that predicts network depth to be correlated with our proposed measure. After verifying this in real data, we are able to formulate the key argument of the work: output sharpness hampers generalization; deep networks have an in built bias against it; therefore, deep networks beat wide ones. All in all the work not only provides a helpful predictor of overfitting that can be used in practice for model selection (or even regularization), but also provides a much needed theoretical grounding for the success of modern deep neural networks.

Abstract

The theory of bias-variance used to serve as a guide for model selection when applying Machine Learning algorithms. However, modern practice has shown success with over-parameterized models that were expected to overfit but did not. This led to the proposal of the double descent curve of performance by Belkin et al. Although it seems to describe a real, representative phenomenon, the field is lacking a fundamental theoretical understanding of what is happening, what are the consequences for model selection and when is double descent expected to occur. In this paper we develop a principled understanding of the phenomenon, and sketch answers to these important questions. Furthermore, we report real experimental results that are correctly predicted by our proposed hypothesis.

Abstract

A vast majority of the current research in the field of Machine Learning is done using algorithms with strong arguments pointing to their biological implausibility such as Backpropagation, deviating the field's focus from understanding its original organic inspiration to a compulsive search for optimal performance. Yet, there have been a few proposed models that respect most of the biological constraints present in the human brain and are valid candidates for mimicking some of its properties and mechanisms. In this paper, we will focus on guiding the learning of a biologically plausible generative model called the Helmholtz Machine in complex search spaces using a heuristic based on the Human Image Perception mechanism. We hypothesize that this model's learning algorithm is not fit for Deep Networks due to its Hebbian-like local update rule, rendering it incapable of taking full advantage of the compositional properties that multi-layer networks provide. We propose to overcome this problem, by providing the network's hidden layers with visual queues at different resolutions using a Multi-level Data representation. The results on several image datasets showed the model was able to not only obtain better overall quality but also a wider diversity in the generated images, corroborating our intuition that using our proposed heuristic allows the model to take more advantage of the network's depth growth. More importantly, they show the unexplored possibilities underlying brain-inspired models and techniques.

Abstract

This letter considers the problem of end-to-end learning for joint optimization of transmitter precoding and receiver processing for mmWave downlink positioning. Considering a multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenario, we propose a novel autoencoder (AE) architecture to estimate user-equipment(UE) position with multiple base-stations (BSs) and demonstrate that end-to-end learning can match model-based design, both for angle of departure (AoD) and position estimation, under ideal conditions without model deficits and outperform it in the presence of hardware impairments.

Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the working-age population of developed countries, caused by a side effect of diabetes that reduces the blood supply to the retina. Deep neural networks have been widely used in automated systems for DR classification on eye fundus images. However, these models need a large number of annotated images. In the medical domain, annotations from experts are costly, tedious, and time-consuming; as a result, a limited number of annotated images are available. This paper presents a semi-supervised method that leverages unlabeled images and labeled ones to train a model that detects diabetic retinopathy. The proposed method uses unsupervised pretraining via self-supervised learning followed by supervised fine-tuning with a small set of labeled images and knowledge distillation to increase the performance in classification task. This method was evaluated on the EyePACS test and Messidor-2 dataset achieving 0.94 and 0.89 AUC respectively using only 2% of EyePACS train labeled images.

Abstract

A digital quantum simulation for the extended Agassi model is proposed using a quantum platform with eight trapped ions. The extended Agassi model is an analytically solvable model including both short range pairing and long range monopole-monopole interactions with applications in nuclear physics and in other many-body systems. In addition, it owns a rich phase diagram with different phases and the corresponding phase transition surfaces. The aim of this work is twofold: on one hand, to propose a quantum simulation of the model at the present limits of the trapped ions facilities and, on the other hand, to show how to use a machine learning algorithm on top of the quantum simulation to accurately determine the phase of the system. Concerning the quantum simulation, this proposal is scalable with polynomial resources to larger Agassi systems. Digital quantum simulations of nuclear physics models assisted by machine learning may enable one to outperform the fastest classical computers in determining fundamental aspects of nuclear matter., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. Abstract

Objective: To conduct a proof-of-concept study of the detection of two synthetic models of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) using polarimetric imaging. Methods: Two SARS-CoV-2 models were prepared as engineered lentiviruses pseudotyped with the G protein of the vesicular stomatitis virus, and with the characteristic Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. Samples were preparations in two biofluids (saline solution and artificial saliva), in four concentrations, and deposited as 5-{\mu}L droplets on a supporting plate. The angles of maximal degree of linear polarization (DLP) of light diffusely scattered from dry residues were determined using Mueller polarimetry of 87 samples at 405 nm and 514 nm. A polarimetric camera was used for simultaneous imaging of several samples under 380-420 nm illumination at angles similar to those of maximal DLP. A per-pixel image analysis included quantification and combination of polarization feature descriptors in other 475 samples. Results: The angles (from sample surface) of maximal DLP were 3 degrees for 405 nm and 6 degrees for 514 nm. Similar viral particles that differ only in the characteristic spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2, their corresponding negative controls, fluids, and the sample holder were discerned from polarimetric image analysis at 10-degree and 15-degree configurations. Conclusion: Polarimetric imaging in the visible spectrum has the potential for non-contact, reagent-free detection of viruses in multiple dry fluid residues simultaneously. Further analysis including real SARS-CoV-2 in human samples -- particularly, fresh saliva -- are required. Significance: Polarimetric imaging under visible light could contribute to fast, cost-effective screening of SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens.

49. Shape coexistence in Sr isotopes

Abstract

Sr isotopes are located in the mass region $A\approx 100$, where a very quick onset of nuclear deformation exists, being other notable examples of this area Yb, Zr, and Nb nuclei. The presence of the proton subshell closure $Z=40$ allows the existence of particle-hole excitations that produces low-lying intruder bands. Purpose: The goal of this work is the study of the nuclear structure of the even-even $^{92-102}$Sr isotopes through the accurate description of excitation energies, $B(E2)$ transition rates, nuclear radii and two-neutron separation energies. Method: The interacting boson model with configuration mixing will be the framework to calculate all the observables of the Sr isotopes. Only two types of configurations will be considered, namely, 0particle-0hole and 2particle-2hole excitations. The parameters of the model are determined using a least-squares procedure for the excitation energies and the $B(E2)$ transition rates. Results: For the whole chain of isotopes, the value of excitation energies, $B(E2)$'s, two-neutron separation energies, nuclear radii, and isotope shifts have been obtained, with a good agreement between theory and experiment. Also, a detailed analysis of the wave functions have been performed and, finally, the mean-field energy surfaces and the value of the nuclear deformation, $\beta$, have been obtained. Conclusions: The presence of low-lying intruder states in even-even Sr isotopes have been confirmed and its connection with the onset of deformation has been clarified. Lightest Sr isotopes present a spherical structure while the heaviest ones are clearly deformed. The rapid onset of deformation at neutron number $60$ is due to the crossing of the regular and intruder configurations and, moreover, both families of states present an increase of deformation with the neutron number., Comment: 42 pages, 16 captioned figures. Abstract

We study a model of a quantum collective spin weakly coupled to a spin-polarized Markovian environment and find that the spectrum is divided into two regions that we name normal and exceptional Liouvillian spectral phases. In the thermodynamic limit, the exceptional spectral phase displays the unique property of being made up exclusively of second order exceptional points. As a consequence, the evolution of any initial density matrix populating this region is slowed down and cannot be described by a linear combination of exponential decays. This phase is separated from the normal one by a critical line in which the density of Liouvillian eigenvalues diverges, a phenomenon analogous to that of excited-state quantum phase transitions observed in some closed quantum systems.
