1. Sound waves for solving the problem of recrystallization in cryopreservation

Abstract

Abstract Organ biobanking is the pending subject of cryopreservation. Although the problem is multifaceted, advances in recent decades have largely related it to achieving rapid and uniform rewarming of cryopreserved samples. This is a physical challenge largely investigated in past in addition to cryoprotectant toxicity studies, which have also shown a great amount of advancement. This paper presents a proof-of-principle, based on the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, of a technology capable of performing such a function: high intensity focused ultrasound. Thus, avoiding the problem of recrystallization, this worm, in its adult state, preserved at − $$80\;^\circ{\rm C}$$ 80 ∘ C , has been systematically brought back to life after being heated with High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) waves. The great advantage of this technology is that it is scalable; in addition, rewarming can be monitored in real time by MRI thermography and can be controlled by acoustic interferometry. We anticipate that our findings are the starting point for a possible approach to rewarming that can be used for cryopreservation of millimeter scale systems: either alone or in combination with other promising ways of heating, like nanowarming or dielectric heating, the present technology provides new ways of solving the physical aspects of the problem of recrystallization in cryopreservation, opening the door for the long-term storage of larger samples.

Abstract

When faced with the prospect of death, some people would prefer a form of long-term preservation that may allow them to be restored to healthy life in the future, if technology ever develops to the point that this is feasible and humane. Some believe that we may have the capacity to perform this type of experimental preservation today—although it has never been proven—using contemporary methods to preserve the structure of the brain. The idea is that the morphomolecular organization of the brain encodes the information required for psychological properties such as personality and long-term memories. If these structures in the brain can be maintained intact over time, this could theoretically provide a bridge to access restorative technologies in the future. To consider this hypothesis, we first describe possible metrics that can be used to assess structural brain preservation quality. We next explore several possible methods to preserve structural information in the brain, including the traditional cryonics method of cryopreservation, as well as aldehyde-stabilized cryopreservation and fluid preservation. We focus in-depth on fluid preservation, which relies on aldehyde fixation to induce chemical gel formation in a wide set of biomolecules and appears to be a cost-effective method. We describe two theoretical recovery technologies, alongside several of the ethical and legal complexities of brain preservation, all of which will require a prudent approach. We believe contemporary structural brain preservation methods have a non-negligible chance of allowing successful restoration in the future and that this deserves serious research efforts by the scientific community.

Abstract

We continue the study of parametric down conversion within the framework of the Wigner representation, by using a Maxwellian approach developed in a recent paper [A. Casado et al., Eur. Phys. J. D 11, 465 (2000)]. This gives a mechanism, inside the crystal, for the production of the down-converted radiation. We obtain the electric field to second order in the coupling constant by using the Green's function method, and compare our treatment with the standard Hamiltonian approach. The spectrum of the down-converted radiation is calculated as a function of the parameters of the nonlinear crystal (in particular the length) and the radius of the pumping beam.

Abstract

By following the analysis of De Caro and Garuccio [Phys. Rev. A 54, 174 (1996)], we show that the factorable state vector produced with a beam-splitter set on the paths of parametric down-converted photons violates some new inequalities that we deduce from local realism. These inequalities are more stringent than those used up to now in the discussion of such phenomena.

Abstract

The conceptual problems that quantum mechanics poses has been noticed by numerous authors [1]. From the early beginnings it has been questioned even by some of its creators: Planck, Eherenfest, Einstein, Schrodinger and de Broglie [2-9]. The problem of the collapse of the wave function, its compatibility with special relativity, the question of its completeness, the meaning of the uncertainty relations, etc., are some of the points that have still not received a satisfactory answer. Certainly a large part of these problems would not exist if the theory could get a realistic and local formulation. On the other hand, quantum mechanics has proven to be extremely good from a pragmatic point of view. It seems to make sense to create a theory that at the same time is realistic and local and close to quantum mechanics, without coinciding exactly with it, because Bell's theorem [10] forbids explicitly this possibility. The hope of a realistic and local explanation of the world has not been excluded experimentally. However, since the most extended opinion in the scientific community is just the opposite, we shall explain once more where lies the error of their arguments. Section 1 deals with the weak and strong Bell's inequalities, quoting the different approaches to solve the EPR paradox. In Sec. 2 one of these approaches is developed, the one usually called “Enhancement” or “Variable-Detection-Probability Model.” In Sec. 3, and with the same approach, we display one of these models that is basically an enrichment of the Einstein-de Broglie's version of quantum mechanics.

Abstract

We report here the results obtained by applying a local and realistic theory to photon intereference phenomena [1], recently observed in a set of experiments performed by Mandel and co-workers [4,6]. In these papers Mandel discarded the possibility of a rational explanation of his results, in the sense that the high visibility obtained was according to him far above the maximum allowed by a “classical” theory. We shall see how a small set of hypotheses, highly plausible for a realistically minded physicist, drives us to a large visibility in agreement with these experiments.

Though the problems of realism and locality in physical theories is at least as old as modern quantum mechanics, the interest for that subject decreased considerablely after its great achivements. However, in the last decades, a very important research has been developed in this line, and we can safety say that neither the idea of reality, nor the locality, have been eliminated in physics, although this fact is still unkwon for the majority of the scientific community, von Neumann’s theorem on the theoretical side, and Aspect’s experiment on t lie experimental one. have created this misunderstanding. The construction of explicit models have clarified highly the scope of these results1,2,. But the construction of a model is not only important for refutal purpouses. of course. A model tries to reprent how Nature works, being of fundamental importance when one wants to deepen it and to really understand it.

Abstract

The theory of parametric down conversion within the framework of the Wigner representation has been treated recently in a series of papers using the standard model Hamiltonian. Here we take a more fundamental point of view studying the mechanism, inside the crystal, for the production of the signal and idler beams. We begin from the evolution equations for the quantum field operators, pass to the Wigner function and solve the resulting (Maxwell) equations with the use of the Green's function method. We derive the time dependence of the coincidence detection probability as a function of the parameters of the nonlinear crystal (in particular the length) the radius of the pumping beam, and the bandwidth of the filters in front of the detectors.

Abstract

In the Wigner formalism, after giving a general description of a light beam, the theory of parametric down-conversion is developed to second-order in the coupling constant. We then describe the detection process by calculating the auto-correlation and cross-correlations of the signal and idler beams. Four recent experiments are analyzed in detail: interference on a screen, Franson's experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 62, 2205 (1989)], Rarity and Tapster's experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 2495 (1990)], and induced coherence without induced emission [X. Y. Zou, L. J. Wang, and L. Mandel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 318 (1991)].

In this article we present a local hidden variables model for all experiments involving photon pairs produced in parametric down conversion, based on the Wigner representation of the radiation field. A modification of the standard quantum theory of detection is made in order to give a local realist explanation of the counting rates in photodetectors.
