Se analizan dos recientes paradigmas referentes al reclutamiento y establecimiento de cactáceas. El primero de ellos está ligado al efecto facilitador que proporcionan los "objetos nodriza" (rocas) en comparación con el que brindan las "plantas nodriza", y que puede ser particularmente relevante en contextos donde la deposición de agua de nieblas y la formación de rocío son fenómenos de alta ocurrencia. El segundo paradigma tiene que ver con la biología trófica de cactáceas rupícolas. Trabajos recientes han descubierto y aislado bacterias que viven dentro (endofíticas) y fuera (en el rizoplano) de las raíces de los cactus, y que son responsables de la meteorización de las rocas y la posterior liberación de nutrientes. El estudio de la ganancia de agua "oculta" promovida por las rocas, así como, el aislamiento e inoculación de cepas de bacterias en plántulas de cactus prometen ser líneas de investigación de suma importancia en los planes de restauración y recuperación de cactáceas endémicas de las zonas áridas de la vertiente occidental de los andes. In this scientific note I analyze two new paradigms in the Cactaceae recruitment and establishment. The first one is related to the facilitation effect given by "nurse objects" (rocks) compared with "nurse plants", which could be enhanced in places where fog deposition and dew formation are highly frequent phenomena. The trophic biology of the rock-colonizing cactus is the second paradigm. Recent studies have discovered and isolated bacteria living into (endophytic) and outside (in the rhizoplane) cactus roots which are responsible for rock weathering and nutrients release. Research on the "hidden" water gains driven by rocks and bacteria isolation and inoculation to cactus seedlings are very important topics in the endemic cactus populations’ restoration and recovering plans in arid environments of the Andean western slopes.

Las formaciones vegetales dominadas por el esparto o atocha (Stipa tenacissima L.) constituyen uno de los ecosistemas más representativos de las zonas semiáridas de la Península Ibérica y del norte de África. Estas formaciones han estado íntimamente ligadas a la actividad humana desde hace no menos de 4.000 años. Los espartales son formaciones vegetales abiertas, muy heterogéneas en su composición y estructura. La funcionalidad de los espartales está muy relacionada con la disposición espacial de las matas, así como con la cobertura de arbustos rebrotadores. El esparto es una especie anemócora capaz de reproducirse sexual y asexualmente, mostrando vecería en la producción de flores y semillas. Presenta una serie de adaptaciones morfoestructurales y fisiológicas que le han permitido colonizar con éxito los adversos ambientes semiáridos mediterráneos. El suelo que se encuentra bajo las matas de esparto muestra un a mayor fertilidad y mejores condiciones microclimáticas que el suelo adyacente, originando la formación de "islas de recursos". Por ello, las matas de esparto alteren la distribución y desarrollo de un gran número de organismos, como plantas vasculares, musgos y líquenes. Los avances en nuestro conocimiento sobre la composición y funcionamiento de los espartales están siendo utilizandos para mejorar su gestión. Open steppes dominated by alpha grass (Stipa tenacissima L.) constitute one of the most representative ecosystems of the semi-arid zones of Eastern Mediterranean Basin (Iberian Peninsula North of Africa).These formations have been intimately tied to human activities since 4,000 years ago. Alpha grass steppes show a high degree of variability in composition and structure. Ecosystem functioning is strongly related to the spatial pattern of alpha grass tussocks, as well as with the cover of sprouting shrubs. Alpha grass is an anemocorous species that is able to reproduce both sexually and clonally, showing masting in the production of flowers and seeds. This species exhibits efficient morpho-structural and physiological adaptations to cope with abiotic stress alloweing a successful colonization of adverse semi-arid Mediterranean environments. Soils beneath alpha grass show higher fertility and improved microclimatic conditions, favouring the formation of "resource islands". These promote the establishment and growth of vascular plants, mosses and lichens. Advances in our knowledge on the composition and functioning of alpha grass steppes are being incorporated into management. Aims Climate and human impacts are changing the nitrogen (N) inputs and losses in terrestrial ecosystems. However, it is largely unknown how these two major drivers of global change will simultaneously influence the N cycle in drylands, the largest terrestrial biome on the planet. We conducted a global observational study to evaluate how aridity and human impacts, together with biotic and abiotic factors, affect key soil variables of the N cycle. Location Two hundred and twenty-four dryland sites from all continents except Antarctica widely differing in their environmental conditions and human influence. Methods Using a standardized field survey, we measured aridity, human impacts (i.e. proxies of land uses and air pollution), key biophysical variables (i.e. soil pH and texture and total plant cover) and six important variables related to N cycling in soils: total N, organic N, ammonium, nitrate, dissolved organic:inorganic N and N mineralization rates. We used structural equation modelling to assess the direct and indirect effects of aridity, human impacts and key biophysical variables on the N cycle. Results Human impacts increased the concentration of total N, while aridity reduced it. The effects of aridity and human impacts on the N cycle were spatially disconnected, which may favour scarcity of N in the most arid areas and promote its accumulation in the least arid areas. Main conclusions We found that increasing aridity and anthropogenic pressure are spatially disconnected in drylands. This implies that while places with low aridity and high human impact accumulate N, most arid sites with the lowest human impacts lose N. Our analyses also provide evidence that both increasing aridity and human impacts may enhance the relative dominance of inorganic N in dryland soils, having a negative impact on key functions and services provided by these ecosystems.

Maestría en Meteorología Aplicada La implementación de técnicas de medición remotas como el uso de la radiometría infrarroja (termometría y termografía infrarroja) para la detección del cierre estomático como una medición del estatus hídrico de la planta con bajos déficit de presión de vapor (< 2 kPa) como la costa central del Perú, han sido discutidos en el presente estudio. Se llevaron a cabo dos experimentos, el primero realizado en macetas con el objetivo de identificar en qué momento del día la diferencia de temperatura de hoja y el aire (dT) y la conductancia estomática máxima a luz saturada (gs_max) reflejan mejor el estatus hídrico de la planta. Dicho experimento se llevó a cabo en plantas bien regadas (capacidad de campo, CC) y bajo restricción hídrica (50% CC). El segundo experimento fue llevado en campo, donde se evaluó el índice de estrés hídrico del cultivo (CWSI) con la metodología de la superficie de referencia y con el objetivo de establecer umbrales de riego. Se aplicarón tres tratamientos de riego: uno bajo condición de control (T1, CC) y otros dos con un umbral preestablecido de gs_max (0.15 [T2] y 0.05 [T3] mol H2O m-2 s-1). Se detectó una sensibilidad al cierre estomático con una caída de gs_max (gs) provocado por la intensificación de las condiciones meteorológicas en horas de la mañana. El cierre estomático intenso causó un incremento de dT que mostró valores positivos más altos (> 2 °C) después de gs. La significativa reducción en el rendimiento de T2 en relación al control (-38.2 ± 10.7 %) se recomienda usar valores de gs_max> 0.15 para garantizar un buen rendimiento. Esta investigación, propone el umbral de 0.4 de CWSI para establecer el momento adecuado para el riego en papa con evaluaciones tomadas alrededor de las 14:00 horas, tiempo en que permite una detección apropiada de las emisiones térmicas. The implementation of remote measurement techniques such as the use of infrared radiometry (infrared thermometry and thermography) for the detection of stomatal closure as a measure of the water status of the plant in an environment humid conditions with low vapor pressure deficit (< 2 kPa) the central coast of Perú, have been discussed in the present study. Two experiments were carried out, the first carried out in pots with the objective of identifying at which time of the day the leaf and air temperature difference (dT) and the maximum, saturated-light stomatal conductance (gs_max,) better reflects the water status of the plant. This experiment was carried out in well-watered plants (field capacity, CC) and under water restriction (50% CC). The second experiment was carried out in the field, where the crop water stress index (CWSI) was evaluated using the reference surface methodology with the objective of establishing irrigation thresholds. Three treatments were apllied: one under control condition (T1, CC) and another two with a pre-established threshold of gs_max (0.15 [T2] and 0.05 [T3] mol H2O m-2 s-1). A sensitivity to stomatal closure was detected with a drop of gs_max (gs) caused by the intensification of weather conditions in the morning hours. Intense stomatal closure caused an increase in dT that showed higher positive values (> 2 °C) after gs. The significant reduction in the yield of T2 in relation to the control (-38.2 ± 10.7 %) proposes to use values of gs_max > 0.15 must be used to warrant a good yield. In the present study, the CWSI threshold 0.4 is proposed to establish the moment right for irrigation in potato with assessments taken around 2:00 pm, time in which it allows an appropriate detection of thermal emissions.
