Abstract

Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) have been recognized as hazards in processed foods that can induce chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and diabetic nephropathy. In this study, we investigated the AGEs contents of 35 types of industrial seafood products that are consumed frequently in eastern China. Total fluorescent AGEs level and Ne-carboxymethyl-lysine (CML) content were evaluated by fluorescence spectrophotometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), respectively. The level of total fluorescent AGEs in seafood samples ranged from 39.37 to 1178.3 AU, and was higher in canned and packaged instant aquatic products that were processed at high temperatures. The CML content in seafood samples ranged from 44.8 to 439.1 mg per kg dried sample, and was higher in roasted seafood samples. The total fluorescent AGEs and CML content increased when seafood underwent high-temperature processing, but did not show an obvious correlation. The present study suggested that commonly consumed seafood contains different levels of AGEs, and the seafood processed at high temperatures always displays a high level of either AGEs or CML.

14. Abstract 14289: High Flow Oxygen to Improve Cardiac Autonomic Dysfunction During Exercise in Advanced Cancer: A Pilot Study

Abstract

Introduction:Supplemental High-flow Oxygen (HFO2) has been observed to increase exercise time (ET) in advanced cancer patients by an unclear mechanism. We propose that HFO2 may increase ET by improving markers of cardiac Autonomic Dysfunction (AD). AD is prevalent among patients with advanced cancer. Physiologic markers of AD include reduced heart rate variability (HRV) and blunted HR and blood pressure (BP) responses to exercise. In this pilot study, we examine the effect of HFO2 during exercise on markers of cardiac AD in advanced cancer patients.Methods:Thirty-six cancer patients who completed structured stationary bicycle exercise sessions were included in this subgroup analysis of a phase II randomized control trial. Baseline structured exercise sessions on room air served as controls for each patient. Patients were randomized to four treatment groups (High-flow oxygen - HFO2, High-flow room air - HFRA, Low-flow oxygen - LFO2, and Low-flow room air - LFRA). BP, HR, oxygenation, continuous ECG, and ET were recorded. A blinded observer recorded R-R? intervals via manual caliper measurement of ECG strips at maximal HR. Interbeat intervals of normal sinus beats were calculated as a surrogate measure of HRV. Two-way ANOVA was performed to detect differences in interbeat intervals of normal sinus beats (SDNN), ET, ?ET, and %?SDNN as a function of oxygen content and delivery method. The study was supported by the American Cancer Society. NCT02357134.Results:The pooled effect of Oxygen (n=18) vs. Room Air (n=18) increased ET by 102.8 ? 42.5s (p<.05). The LFRA group (n=9) had ET 463.2 ? 82.5s, ?ET 23 ? 93.6s, SDNN 8.5 ? 2.0ms, and %?SDNN 5.0 ? 21%. The HFO2 group (n=9) had ET 651.9 ? 264.0s (p=.140), ?ET 188.9 ? 218.6s (p=.140), SDNN 10.1 ? 2.2ms (p=.325), and %?SDNN 25.0 ? 37.4% (p=.202).Conclusion:Our study demonstrates that supplemental O2 confers improvement in ET in advanced cancer patients. Promising trends in SDNN were observed in our small pilot study. Per post-hoc power analysis with p=0.05 and power of 0.8, further investigation with a sample size of at least n=75 is warranted to clarify whether HFO2 improves markers of cardiac AD during exercise.
