Equivalent circuit modelling (ECM) is a powerful tool to study the dynamic and non-linear characteristics of Li-ion cells and is widely used for the development of the battery management system (BMS) of electric vehicles. The dynamic parameters described by the ECM are used by the BMS to estimate the battery state of charge (SOC), which is crucial for efficient charging/discharging, range calculations, and the overall safe operation of electric vehicles. Typically, the ECM approach represents the dynamic characteristics of the battery in a mathematical form with a limited number of unknown parameters. Then, the parameters are calculated from voltage and current information of the lithium-ion cell obtained from controlled experiments. In the current work, a faster and simplified first-order resistance–capacitance (RC) equivalent circuit model was developed for a commercial cylindrical cell (LGM50 21700). An analytical solution was developed for the equivalent circuit model incorporating SOC and temperature-dependent RC parameters. The solution to the RC circuit model was derived using multiple expressions for different components like open circuit voltage (OCV), instantaneous resistance (R0), and diffusional parameters (R1 and C1) as a function of the SOC and operating temperature. The derived parameters were validated against the virtual HPPC test results of a validated physics-based electrochemical model for the voltage behavior. Using the developed RC circuit model, a polynomial expression is derived to estimate the temperature increase of the cell including both irreversible and reversible heat generation components. The temperature predicted by the proposed RC circuit model at different battery operating temperatures is in good agreement with the values obtained from the validated physics model. The developed method can find applications in (i) onboard energy management by the BMS and (ii) quicker evaluation of cell performance early in the product development cycle.

Purpose: To determine the level of awareness and knowledge about glaucoma surgery and post-surgery counseling amongst paramedical staff at a tertiary eye-care hospital. Methods: This observational cross-sectional study included a random sample of 94 hospital personnel: 37 general nurse midwives, 47 ophthalmic assistants, and 10 patient caretakers (PCTs). Participants were administered a questionnaire about glaucoma surgery and post-surgery counseling of patients. Results: The study included 41 (43.6%) females and 53 (56.4%) males. The mean age of the participants was 24.85 ± 4.54 years. All participants were aware of trabeculectomy surgery in glaucoma (100%). A total of 95.7% knew that surgery helps in controlling IOP, of whom 57 (60.6%) participants got information during their course of learning. Overall 53 (56.4%) believed that surgery is done when medication failure occurs, and 58 (61.7%) knew that surgery helps in preserving vision. A total of 63 (67.0%) participants knew to counsel patients to visit an ophthalmologist when called for and take the treatment as advised, whereas 74 (78.7%) correctly said to visit an ophthalmologist immediately if pain/diminution of vision/discharge occurs. Overall, PCTs were found to be having significantly better knowledge (P = 0.01) compared to others and they also reported ophthalmologists as the chief source of information. Conclusion: This study revealed that paramedical staff had an excellent awareness of trabeculectomy surgery. However, the knowledge and counseling parts of the questionnaire revealed less than satisfactory responses. So, there is a need to continuously educate paramedical staff members so that they can help in propagating information about the role of glaucoma surgery and the importance of proper follow-up.

Aim and Objective: To study the prevalence and risk factors of prehypertension and hypertension among adolescents (18–19 years) at the entry level of professional course. Materials and Methods: After institutional ethics committee approval and informed consent from participants, the data were collected and entered into the Excel sheet. Appropriate statistical analysis was applied. The final result was statistically interpreted. Results: A total of 273 student participants were included in the study. There were 104 males and 169 females. One hundred and seven participants were 18 years old and 168 were 19 years old. Male: female ratio is 1:1.6. Prehypertension was seen in 91 (33.3%) and hypertension was observed in 34 (12.57%). Seven (20.6%) cases had a family history of hypertension. Twenty-two (8.1%) had addictive habits. Inadequate physical activity was seen in 32 (94.1%) of cases who had hypertension. Poor sleep quality was seen in hypertensives (17; 50%). In our study also, there was no statistically significant association between gender and systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure (P > 0.05). There is a statistical significance association between the gender and body mass index (BMI) but not between BMI and hypertension status. There was statistically significant association was there between prehypertension and hypertension with habits. Conclusion: Change in habits and dietary modification will have impact on the development of prehypertension and or hypertension among adolescents. More emphasis must be given to screen adolescents at college entry. Adolescents are best target age group for primordial prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury (SCI) are crucial worldwide health priorities. These injuries result in human dysfunction and health loss, as well as being a burden on health-care systems and economies due to high health-care cost and lost productivity. This study aimed to correlate the findings between the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) with the intracranial pressure (ICP) value by the invasive ICP monitoring catheter along with evaluating the cut off value of ONSD measurement in predicting raised ICP, with its specificity and sensitivity value. Patients and Methods: The prospective study included patients >18 years of age and with a suspected traumatic brain injury with an initial (Glasgow Coma Scale) GCS of ≤12. Brief history, clinical examination findings and relevant investigation reports were recorded. Data was analyzed in R software version 4.1.0. P≤0.05 was set as statistically significant. Result: By using paired t test, we observed that there was significant difference in mean ICP from 0 hour to 12 hours. However, the variance in mean ICP from 0 hour to 24 hours was insignificant. ONSD and ICP was significantly correlated at 0 hour, 12 hours and 24 hours. Conclusion: Increased value of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) was helpful in predicting elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the commonly seen malformations, with incidence varying from 7 to 8/1000 live birth. Causes are multifactorial. Routine examination of neonates may miss more than 50% of cases. Pulse oximetry is a simple, noninvasive, bedside test which estimates the percentage of oxygen bound to hemoglobin (oxygen saturation [SpO2]). Detection of critical CHD (CCHD) has been possible with SpO2 screening. Many countries included SpO2 as part of newborn screening due to this. As a primary approach, both pre- and post-ductal extremity SpO2 is measured after 24 h of life. Echocardiography (ECHO) will be done on neonates with SpO2 readings <95%. Neonates born in high-altitude regions, studies have suggest to use adjusted threshold values. In India, there are limited studies. Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of pulse oximetry as a screening tool for early detection of CHD in otherwise asymptomatic newborns. To determine, the accuracy of SpO2 for detecting clinically unrecognized CCHD in newborns. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective observational study done in the department of pediatrics in a tertiary hospital. The study was conducted over 12 months. During the study period, all neonates born who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included in the study. After 24 h of life, neonates were examined clinically and the pre- and post-ductal SpO2 was measured. Neonates with SpO2 <90% in room air were excluded from the study. If the SpO2 was between 90% and 94%, clinical examination was repeated, if suspicious of CHD, they were referred for ECHO. If there was no suspicion of CHD, SpO2 was repeated after 6 h and ECHO was done if SpO2 ≤95. The difference of SpO2 >3% between the right upper limb and right lower limb was considered positive. Positive neonates were evaluated with two-dimensional echocardiograph. Inclusion criteria - All hemodynamically stable neonates were born during the study period. Exclusion criteria (1) Antenatally diagnosed cardiac anomalies, (2) Outborn neonates, (3) Parents/guardians are not willing to participate in the study and/or further investigation, (4) Sick neonates and those with SpO2 <90% at birth. Results: 1117 (83.7%) were eligible for the study out of 1333 neonates born. 669 (59.9%) were born by cesarean section and 448 (40.1%) by vaginal delivery. 996 (89.2%) were born at term (≥37 weeks of gestation) and 121 (10.8%) were preterm (<37 weeks of gestation). The male-to-female ratio was 1.03:1. The mean birth weight of the neonates was 2.91 ± 0.46 kg (mean ± standard deviation). The mean SPO2 in the right upper limb was 96.62 ± 1.73, in the right lower limb was 96.87 ± 1.76, in the left upper limb was 96.59 ± 1.90, and in the left lower limb was 97.06 ± 1.74. The average SPO2 difference between the right upper limb and right lower limb was 1.04 ± 1.07. Based on SpO2, 858 (76.8%) cases were not suspected of having CHD and 259 (23.3%) were suspected of having CHD and were evaluated with ECHO. Six (0.5%) neonates had CHD in whom echo was done. In our study, for detecting CCHD, SPO2 cutoff value of ≤90% showed 90% sensitivity, 99.94% specificity, 75% positive predictive value, and 99.98% negative predictive value. Conclusions: This study emphasizes noninvasive SPO2 as reliable and feasible, with good negative predictive value screening for CHD in neonates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Normally, branches of superior mesenteric and inferior mesenteric arteries (IMA) supply the parts of intestine derived from midgut and hindgut and their variations are uncommon. One of the rarest variations is the presence of a middle mesenteric artery (MMA), an anomalous ventral branch of abdominal aorta originating in between the origins of superior and IMA supplying variable portions of the colon, sporadically reported mainly as case reports. Materials and Methods: While retrospectively examining multi-detector computed tomography angiographic abdominal scans of 500 subjects for analyzing the variations of branches of abdominal aorta, an anomalous artery supplying variable parts of colon was observed in one male patient. Observations: We report here an incidentally detected presence of MMA supplying large portions of colon in a male patient with nonrotation of gut, cholelithiasis, and portal hypertension. Computed tomography angiography of this patient also revealed variant celiac artery branching with hepatosplenic trunk and direct aortic origin of left gastric artery. Thus, there were five ventral branches of abdominal aorta supplying the gut which is a very rare presentation. Hepatic flexure of the colon was present between diaphragm and right lobe of the liver (Chilaiditi syndrome). Discussion and Conclusion: Our literature search has yielded 26 such cases reported globally, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report from India. Associated anomalies reported include abdominal aortic aneurysm, nonrotation of gut, and presence of other vascular anomalies. Failure to identify such an anomalous artery may result in its damage with subsequent bowel ischemia and other complications during surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
