16. Acaricide Resistance in Field-Collected Two-Spotted Spider Mite Tetranychus urticae Koch

Abstract

Two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch is an economically serious pest posing threat to major vegetable crops. Roving survey in and around Coimbatore region revealed that farmers do not target mites with acaricides instead they use higher dose of insecticides at frequent intervals which results in development of resistance. The bioassay results revealed that fenpropathrin (2.07 to 6.86-folds) and fenazaquin (2.74 to 7.13-folds) exhibit higher susceptibility, whereas diafenthiuron (5.35 to 12.25-folds) revealed a low to moderate level of resistance. The propargite (43.80 to 60.63-folds) and chlorfenapyr (61.01 to 75.10-folds) exhibited high resistance, followed by spiromesifen (222.28 to 300.26-folds) and buprofezin (382.60 to 417.87-folds), with extremely high level of resistance. The higher specific activity of GST (4.54-folds), MFO (10.06-folds) and CarE (15.06-folds) in Puthupalayam population suggested the role of biochemical resistance. A significant positive correlation was observed between diafenthiuron and CarE activity (r = 0.981*), fenpropathrin and MFO activity (r = 0.964*).

This is the first report of A. cyperi on nutgrass in the jute ecosystem in West Bengal. This study throws a hope of using this weevil as a potential biocontrol agent against the most notorious weed the nut grass, which has been gradually developing resistance against many of the commonly used herbicides. Abstract

Removing random valued impulse noise (RVIN) is a challenging task in corrupted images. This article aims to study some detection and filtering algorithms which remove RVIN in images. In addition to some state-of-the-art detection and filtering algorithms, a new detection technique, measures of dispersion (MOD) algorithm, for removing very high-density RVIN proposed by authors is also compared with existing methods. In the detection stage, rank order absolute difference, rank order logarithmic difference, adaptive switching median, triangle-based linear interpolation, and MOD algorithms are considered. Median filter, fuzzy switching median filter, and fuzzy switching weighted median filter are used for filtering followed by the detection algorithms. Comparative studies in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity have been devised to evaluate the performance of various filtering schemes.

Abstract

The first occurrence of the exotic fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in sugarcane from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, India, is reported in this communication. The pest was observed in a few farms in the sugarcane belts of M/s Sakthi Sugars Ltd., Modakurichi, Erode district, and M/s E.I.D. Parry (India) Ltd., Pugalur, Karur district, Tamil Nadu, India, in November 2018. In both places, young crop (2.5-4.0 months age) of the popular variety Co 86032 was attacked with incidence levels ranging 1.85-30.86% in the three affected farms. Leaves of infested plants showed skeletonization, irregular holes or windows on the lamina and margin feeding symptoms in both mother shoots and tillers. In some plants, the central shoot was nibbled, apparently by grown-up larvae, and in many plants the spindle was sheared. Infested shoots and tillers, however, did not show meristem damage. In severely affected plants, mature larvae, visible or hidden in the whorl, amidst large quantities of fresh faecal pellets were observed; patches of dry frass were seen on older outer leaves. Curative chemical control adopted in the affected farms appeared to have controlled the pest with no subsequent recurrence. An interim strategy to monitor and manage FAW in sugarcane has been outlined.

Abstract

Folmer region of mtCOI gene from sugarcane top borer, Scirpophaga excerptalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) has been cloned and characterized. This would be the ideal DNA barcode as it is 658 bp in size (KJ013411) and does not have any stop codon in its amino acid sequence. The COI fragment cloned in this study showed less than 89% identity with other species of Scirpophaga having full length DNA barcodes and hence, it clearly delineates S. excerptalis from other closely related congenerics. The COI gene sequence of S. excerptalis would also serve as a base for identifying the cryptic species if any, in the sugarcane crop ecosystem of the Indian subcontinent.

35. Population dynamics of Melanaphis sacchari(Zehntner), the aphid vector of sugarcane yellow leaf virus under tropical conditions in India

Abstract

Sugarcane yellow leaf disease (YLD) has emerged as a serious threat to sugarcane cultivation worldwide, particularly in India. The aphid, Melanaphis sacchari, has been proved to be the vector for the causative agent sugarcane yellow leaf virus (ScYLV) across the world. However, the population dynamics of the aphid are not established under field conditions. Hence, this study was conducted with the aim of studying the population dynamics of M. saccharifor four consecutive years (2015–2019) under the typical tropical conditions. The sugarcane aphid starts colonizing the crop in April, reaches its maximum in June–July, starts declining in August, and almost vanishes in September. Thus, the 5–7-month-old crop supports higher aphid population irrespective of the varieties, provided the climatic conditions are near-normal. A significant variation in the climatic conditions observed in 2016–2017 significantly altered the population dynamics of the aphid on sugarcane varieties. In 2016–2017, the aphid appeared late in May and extended till December. It was interesting to note that the aphid population was recorded to be higher in the diseased plants as compared with the healthy ones of the same variety. Further, the YLD-susceptible cvs CoC 671, Co 86032, Co 86010, CoPant 84211, and B38192 were recorded with comparatively higher numbers of aphid during the peak season in all the 4 years. The colonization of aphid was observed to be aggregate in nature and not uniform in all the plants of a variety and leaves of an infested plant. Increased levels of aphid infestation was found between + 5 and + 7 leaves in sugarcane plants, across the seasons and varieties, and rainfall was negatively associated with the build-up of aphid colonization. The study provides new findings on the dynamics of M. sacchariunder tropical climate in India for the first time and contributes to the understanding of the disease epidemiology.

A survey on native natural enemies of Bihar hairy caterpillar, Spilosoma obliqua Walker was conducted during April- August 2012 cropping season at ICAR-CRIJAF, Barrackpore as well as jute growing belts in West Bengal, India. The survey revealed that Protapanteles obliquae (Wilkinson) (Braconidae: Hymenoptera) is a potential larval parasitoid of S. obliqua which is occurring naturally on jute. This is the first record of natural parasitism of P. obliquae on S. obliqua on jute crop in India.

46. Persistence and dissipation kinetics of chlorantraniliprole 0.4G in the soil of tropical sugarcane ecosystem.

Abstract

Chlorantraniliprole 0.4 % GR has been in use for managing early shoot borer and top borer of sugarcane. Persistence and dissipation kinetics of granular formulation of chlorantraniliprole were studied in the soil of tropical sugarcane ecosystem by employing simple and sensitive analytical method. Limit of quantification of the method was 0.01 mg/kg and the recovery of chlorantraniliprole was in the range of 92.3–99.7%with RSD of 1.14–3.0 %. The initial deposit of chlorantraniliprole in the soil was 0.513 and 1.031 mg/kg for the recommended (75 g a.i./ha) and double the recommended (150 g a.i./ha) doses, respectively. The residues were quantified up to 30 days after treatment irrespective of the doses applied. Half-life (t1/2) was 6.60 and 6.73 days, respectively, for recommended and double the recommended doses of chlorantraniliprole. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
