We report constraints on sub-GeV dark matter particles interacting with electrons from the first underground operation of DAMIC-M detectors. The search is performed with an integrated exposure of 85.23 g days, and exploits the subelectron charge resolution and low level of dark current of DAMIC-M charge-coupled devices (CCDs). Dark-matter-induced ionization signals above the detector dark current are searched for in CCD pixels with charge up to 7e$^-$. With this dataset we place limits on dark matter particles of mass between 0.53 and 1000 MeV/$c^2$, excluding unexplored regions of parameter space in the mass ranges [1.6,1000] MeV/$c^2$ and [1.5,15.1] MeV/$c^2$ for ultralight and heavy mediator interactions, respectively.

A thin film of CuInxGa(1-x)Se2 obtained by physical vapor deposition on a glass substrate covered by a Mo-film has been tested by the second harmonic generation (SHG) technique. The intensity of reflected SHG has been measured as a function of rotation angle around normal to the sample surface. To reveal the preferential orientation of micro-crystals in the film, using these data, the theoretical model of SHG in a multilayered structure has been developed. In the frame of the proposed model, the Euler angles defining the orientation of optical axis of the film texture, the ratio of two constants of nonlinear susceptibility, and the effective thickness of the film were numerically calculated.

The DAMIC-M (DArk Matter In CCDs at Modane) experiment employs thick, fully depleted silicon charged-coupled devices (CCDs) to search for dark matter particles with a target exposure of 1 kg-year. A novel skipper readout implemented in the CCDs provides single electron resolution through multiple non-destructive measurements of the individual pixel charge, pushing the detection threshold to the eV-scale. DAMIC-M will advance by several orders of magnitude the exploration of the dark matter particle hypothesis, in particular of candidates pertaining to the so-called "hidden sector." A prototype, the Low Background Chamber (LBC), with 20g of low background Skipper CCDs, has been recently installed at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane and is currently taking data. Experiments aiming to directly detect dark matter through particle recoils can achieve energy thresholds of $\mathcal{O}(1\,\mathrm{eV})$. In this regime, ionization signals from small-angle Compton scatters of environmental $\gamma$-rays constitute a significant background. Monte Carlo simulations used to build background models have not been experimentally validated at these low energies. We report a precision measurement of Compton scattering on silicon atomic shell electrons down to 23$\,$eV. A skipper charge-coupled device (CCD) with single-electron resolution, developed for the DAMIC-M experiment, was exposed to a $^{241}$Am $\gamma$-ray source over several months. Features associated with the silicon K, L$_{1}$, and L$_{2,3}$-shells are clearly identified, and scattering on valence electrons is detected for the first time below 100$\,$eV. We find that the relativistic impulse approximation for Compton scattering, which is implemented in Monte Carlo simulations commonly used by direct detection experiments, does not reproduce the measured spectrum below 0.5$\,$keV. The data are in better agreement with $ab$ $initio$ calculations originally developed for X-ray absorption spectroscopy., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. Many low-threshold experiments observe sharply rising event rates of yet unknown origins below a few hundred eV, and larger than expected from known backgrounds. Due to the significant impact of this excess on the dark matter or neutrino sensitivity of these experiments, a collective effort has been started to share the knowledge about the individual observations. For this, the EXCESS Workshop was initiated. In its first iteration in June 2021, ten rare event search collaborations contributed to this initiative via talks and discussions. The contributing collaborations were CONNIE, CRESST, DAMIC, EDELWEISS, MINER, NEWS-G, NUCLEUS, RICOCHET, SENSEI and SuperCDMS. They presented data about their observed energy spectra and known backgrounds together with details about the respective measurements. In this paper, we summarize the presented information and give a comprehensive overview of the similarities and differences between the distinct measurements. We construct the first comprehensive radioactive background model for a dark matter search with charge-coupled devices (CCDs). We leverage the well-characterized depth and energy resolution of the DAMIC at SNOLAB detector and a detailed GEANT4-based particle-transport simulation to model both bulk and surface backgrounds from natural radioactivity down to 50 eV$_{\text{ee}}$. We fit to the energy and depth distributions of the observed ionization events to differentiate and constrain possible background sources, for example, bulk $^{3}$H from silicon cosmogenic activation and surface $^{210}$Pb from radon plate-out. We observe the bulk background rate of the DAMIC at SNOLAB CCDs to be as low as $3.1 \pm 0.6$ counts kg$^{-1}$ day$^{-1}$ keV$_{\text{ee}}^{-1}$, making it the most sensitive silicon dark matter detector. Finally, we discuss the properties of a statistically significant excess of events over the background model with energies below 200 eV$_{\text{ee}}$., Comment: 27 pages, 19 figures

We present measurements of bulk radiocontaminants in the high-resistivity silicon CCDs from the DAMIC at SNOLAB experiment. We utilize the exquisite spatial resolution of CCDs to discriminate between $\alpha$ and $\beta$ decays, and to search with high efficiency for the spatially-correlated decays of various radioisotope sequences. Using spatially-correlated $\beta$ decays, we measure a bulk radioactive contamination of $^{32}$Si in the CCDs of $140 \pm 30$ $\mu$Bq/kg, and place an upper limit on bulk $^{210}$Pb of $< 160~\mu$Bq/kg. Using similar analyses of spatially-correlated bulk $\alpha$ decays, we set limits of $< 11$ $\mu$Bq/kg (0.9 ppt) on $^{238}$U and of $< 7.3$ $\mu$Bq/kg (1.8 ppt) on $^{232}$Th. The ability of DAMIC CCDs to identify and reject spatially-coincident backgrounds, particularly from $^{32}$Si, has significant implications for the next generation of silicon-based dark matter experiments, where $\beta$'s from $^{32}$Si decay will likely be a dominant background. We present constraints on the existence of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) from an 11 kg-day target exposure of the DAMIC experiment at the SNOLAB underground laboratory. The observed energy spectrum and spatial distribution of ionization events with electron-equivalent energies $>$200 eV$_{\rm ee}$ in the DAMIC CCDs are consistent with backgrounds from natural radioactivity. An excess of ionization events is observed above the analysis threshold of 50 eV$_{\rm ee}$. While the origin of this low-energy excess requires further investigation, our data exclude spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross sections $\sigma_{\chi-n}$ as low as $3\times 10^{-41}$ cm$^2$ for WIMPs with masses $m_{\chi}$ from 7 to 10 GeV$c^{-2}$ . These results are the strongest constraints from a silicon target on the existence of WIMPs with $m_{\chi}$$<$9 GeV$c^{-2}$ and are directly relevant to any dark matter interpretation of the excess of nuclear-recoil events observed by the CDMS silicon experiment in 2013., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The production of $^{3}$H, $^{7}$Be, and $^{22}$Na by interactions of cosmic-ray particles with silicon can produce radioactive backgrounds in detectors used to search for rare events. Through controlled irradiation of silicon CCDs and wafers with a neutron beam that mimics the cosmic-ray neutron spectrum, followed by direct counting, we determined that the production rate from cosmic-ray neutrons at sea level is ($112 \pm 24$) atoms/(kg day) for $^{3}$H, ($8.1 \pm 1.9 $) atoms/(kg day) for $^{7}$Be, and ($43.0 \pm 7.1 $) atoms/(kg day) for $^{22}$Na. Complementing these results with the current best estimates of activation cross sections for cosmic-ray particles other than neutrons, we obtain a total sea-level cosmic-ray production rate of ($124 \pm 24$) atoms/(kg day) for $^{3}$H, ($9.4 \pm 2.0 $) atoms/(kg day) for $^{7}$Be, and ($49.6 \pm 7.3 $) atoms/(kg day) for $^{22}$Na. These measurements will help constrain background estimates and determine the maximum time that silicon-based detectors can remain unshielded during detector fabrication before cosmogenic backgrounds impact the sensitivity of next-generation rare-event searches., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, 10 tables. However, evidence shows that both prediabetes and its associated cardiovascular risk factors could be mitigated through lifestyle modification. This study aims at determining the magnitude of prediabetes and related modifiable cardiovascular risk factors as an initial step towards undertaking such mitigation measures.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on employees of a tertiary care hospital from March to June/2019. Socio-demographic data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Anthropometric and blood pressure measurements were performed following WHO guidelines. Biochemical parameters were assayed following standard operating procedures. Categorical variables are summarized using frequencies and percentages. Normality test was performed ahead of describing the numeric data and log transformations were carried out when appropriate. International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria were used to classify glycemic status. Likewise, IDF and revised National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) were employed for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.Results: In this study, we engaged a total of 265 employees. About 35.1% were males and 64.9% were females. The median age was 29 (9) years. About 5.7% and 18.1% had prediabetes based on IDF and ADA criteria, respectively. Equally, 3.4% had FBS levels that meet the criteria for overt diabetes on IDF and ADA. Besides, 55.1% had a metabolic risk as implied by the elevated waist-to-height ratio (WhtR), 24.2% had hypertriglyceridemia, 27.9% had above optimal LDL and 57% had low HDL. Overall, 17.9% and 21.9% of the participants had metabolic syndrome according to IDF and revised NCEP ATP III criteria, respectively.Conclusion: The prevalence of prediabetes and metabolic syndrome observed in hospital employees is comparable with the general population.Keywords: prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, hospital employees

We report direct-detection constraints on light dark matter particles interacting with electrons. The results are based on a method that exploits the extremely low levels of leakage current of the DAMIC detector at SNOLAB of 2-6$\times$10$^{-22}$ A cm$^{-2}$. We evaluate the charge distribution of pixels that collect $<10~\rm{e^-}$ for contributions beyond the leakage current that may be attributed to dark matter interactions. Constraints are placed on so-far unexplored parameter space for dark matter masses between 0.6 and 100 MeV$c^{-2}$. 28. Variations in the Chemical and Electronic Impact of Post-Deposition Treatments on Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 Absorbers

We present a comparative study that focuses on the variability of post-deposition treatments (NaF-PDT and KF-PDT) and their impact on the chemical and electronic structure of chalcopyrite thin film solar cell absorbers. For this purpose, two "extreme" chalcopyrite absorber systems are studied: Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 with industrial relevance (STION), and Cu(In,Ga)Se2 with "research grade" properties (NREL). Samples were subjected to NaF-PDT and KF-PDT, and investigated using X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and synchrotron-based soft X-ray emission spectroscopy. Considerably different alkali-induced effects are found for the two systems. In particular, we only detect a PDT-related Cu depletion on the NREL absorber surfaces (and only on those leading to high-efficiency devices). We also observe a reduction in the surface S/Se ratio for all alkali-treated STION absorbers, in addition to the presence of sulfates after the KF-PDT. After processing the PDT absorbers to fully operating cells, we find that the PDT temperature has a significant impact on the resulting device efficiencies - both the NREL and STION absorbers can result in high-efficiency and low-efficiency devices, depending on KF-PDT processing parameters. The absorbers of low-efficiency KF-PDT devices show the largest Cu surface content after PDT, causing the valence band maximum to be closer to the Fermi energy, thus possibly leading to less efficient charge-carrier separation and/or enhanced recombination at the interface. Finally, we find varying degrees of Na, K, and/or F residuals on the different absorber surfaces after PDT, indicating a potential "hidden" parameter in employing PDTs for improved solar cell performance.

We report detailed measurements of low-energy spectra from Compton scattering of $\gamma$ rays in the bulk silicon of a charge-coupled device (CCD). Electron recoils produced by $\gamma$ rays from $^{57}$Co and $^{241}$Am radioactive sources are measured between 60 eV and 4 keV. The observed spectra agree qualitatively with theoretical predictions, and characteristic spectral features associated with the atomic structure of the silicon target are accurately measured for the first time. A theoretically-motivated parametrization of the data that describes the Compton spectrum at low energies for any incident $\gamma$-ray flux is derived. The result is directly applicable to background estimations for low-mass dark matter direct-detection experiments based on silicon detectors, in particular for the DAMIC experiment down to its current energy threshold., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

Recent advances in high-throughput in silico techniques translate experimental data into meaningful biological networks through which the role of individual proteins, interactions, and their biological functions are comprehended. The study objective was to identify differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs between the day 16 competent, elongated embryo from normal cows and the day 16 noncompetent, tubular embryos from repeat breeder cows, assimilate DE-miRNAs to their target genes, and group target genes based on biological function using in silico methods. The 84 prioritized bovine-specific miRNAs were investigated by RT-PCR, and the results showed that 19 were differentially expressed (11 up- and 8 down-regulated) in the competent embryos compared to noncompetent ones (p ≤ 0.05; fold regulation ≥ 2 magnitudes). Top-ranked integrated genes of DE-miRNAs predicted various biological and molecular functions, cellular processes, and signaling pathways. Further, analysis of the categorized groups of genes showed association with signaling pathways, turning on or off key genes and transcription factors regulating the development of embryo, placenta, and various organs. In conclusion, highly DE-miRNAs in day 16 bovine conceptus regulated the embryogenesis and pregnancy establishment. The elucidated miRNA-mRNA interactions in this study were mostly based on predictions from public databases. Therefore, the causal regulations of these interactions and mechanisms require further functional characterization.

We present direct detection constraints on the absorption of hidden-photon dark matter with particle masses in the range 1.2-30 eV$c^{-2}$ with the DAMIC experiment at SNOLAB. Under the assumption that the local dark matter is entirely constituted of hidden photons, the sensitivity to the kinetic mixing parameter $\kappa$ is competitive with constraints from solar emission, reaching a minimum value of 2.2$\times$$10^{-14}$ at 17 eV$c^{-2}$. We present results of a dark matter search performed with a 0.6 kg day exposure of the DAMIC experiment at the SNOLAB underground laboratory. We measure the energy spectrum of ionization events in the bulk silicon of charge-coupled devices down to a signal of 60 eV electron equivalent. The data are consistent with radiogenic backgrounds, and constraints on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross section are accordingly placed. A region of parameter space relevant to the potential signal from the CDMS-II Si experiment is excluded using the same target for the first time. This result obtained with a limited exposure demonstrates the potential to explore the low-mass WIMP region (<10 GeV/$c^{2}$) of the upcoming DAMIC100, a 100 g detector currently being installed in SNOLAB., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

The surface and near surface structure of copper-indium-gallium-selenide (CIGS) absorber layers is integral to the producing a high-quality photovoltaic junction. By using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and monitoring multiple elemental absorption edges with both theory and experiment, we are able to identify several features of the surface of CIGS as a function of composition and surface treatments. The XAS data shows trends in the near surface region of oxygen, copper, indium and gallium species as the copper content is varied in the films. The oxygen surface species are also monitored through a series of experiments that systematically investigates the effects of water and various solutions of: ammonium hydroxide, cadmium sulfate, and thiourea. These being components of cadmium sulfide chemical bath deposition (CBD). Characteristics of the CBD are correlated with a restorative effect that produces as normalized, uniform surface chemistry as measured by XAS. High-throughput in-silico techniques help us understand the role of individual proteins, protein–protein interaction, and their biological functions by corroborating experimental data as epitomized biological networks. The objective of this investigation was to elucidate the association of miRNA-mediated genes in the regulation of dog testes development from immature to adult form by in-silico analysis. Differentially expressed (DE) canine testis miRNAs between healthy immature (2.2 ± 0.13 months; n = 4) and mature (11 ± 1.0 months; n = 4) dogs were utilized in this investigation. In silico analysis was performed using miRNet, STRING, and ClueGo programs. The determination of mRNA and protein expressions of predicted pivotal genes and their association with miRNA were studied. The results showed protein–protein interaction for the upregulated miRNAs, which revealed 978 enriched biological processes GO terms and 127 KEGG enrichment pathways, and for the down-regulated miRNAs revealed 405 significantly enriched biological processes GO terms and 72 significant KEGG enrichment pathways (False Recovery Rate, p < 0.05). The in-silico analysis of DE-miRNA’s associated genes revealed their involvement in the governing of several key biological functions (cell cycle, cell proliferation, growth, maturation, survival, and apoptosis) in the testis as they evolve from immature to adult forms, mediated by several key signaling pathways (ErbB, p53, PI3K-Akt, VEGF and JAK-STAT), cytokines and hormones (estrogen, GnRH, relaxin, thyroid hormone, and prolactin). Elucidation of DE-miRNA predicted genes’ specific roles, signal transduction pathways, and mechanisms, by mimics and inhibitors, which could perhaps offer diagnostic and therapeutic targets for infertility, cancer, and birth control.

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for management of critically ill patients has significantly increased in the recent past due to technological progress and increased experience with safe ECMO runs. The use of venoarterial (VA) ECMO during high risk interventional cardiology procedures ensure adequate cardiac output and other organ perfusion as well. The use of elective VA ECMO support during procedure allow interventionists to perform procedure safely and comfortably, moreover the support may be extended during post-procedural period in case of cardiogenic shock or arrhythmia. VA ECMO may also be instituted in emergent situations when conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is ineffective to achieve return of spontaneous circulation. The various procedures with high risk potential due to anatomical complexity, haemodynamic decompensation or preexisting clinical condition may require mechanical circulatory support. These include percutaneous coronary interventions, Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), complex congenital anamoly or electrophysiological procedures. However an integrated team approach with appropriate communication is vital among interventional cardiologist, ECMO specialist, cardiac surgeon, cardiac anaesthesiologist and perfusionist for a successful outcome. - Abstract
Background: In patients receiving venovenous (VV) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusion thresholds are usually higher than in other patients who are critically ill. Available guidelines suggest a restrictive approach, but do not provide specific recommendations on the topic. The main aim of this study was, in a short timeframe, to describe the actual values of haemoglobin and the rate and the thresholds for transfusion of PRBC during VV ECMO. Methods: PROTECMO was a multicentre, prospective, cohort study done in 41 ECMO centres in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. Consecutive adult patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who were receiving VV ECMO were eligible for inclusion. Patients younger than 18 years, those who were not able to provide informed consent when required, and patients with an ECMO stay of less than 24 h were excluded. Our main aim was to monitor the daily haemoglobin concentration and the value at the point of PRBC transfusion, as well as the rate of transfusions. The practice in different centres was stratified by continent location and case volume per year. Adjusted estimates were calculated using marginal structural models with inverse probability weighting, accounting for baseline and time varying confounding. Findings: Between Dec 1, 2018, and Feb 22, 2021, 604 patients were enrolled (431 [71%] men, 173 [29%] women; mean age 50 years [SD 13·6]; and mean haemoglobin concentration at cannulation 10·9 g/dL [2·4]). Over 7944 ECMO days, mean haemoglobin concentration was 9·1 g/dL (1·2), with lower concentrations in North America and high-volume centres. PRBC were transfused on 2432 (31%) of days on ECMO, and 504 (83%) patients received at least one PRBC unit. Overall, mean pretransfusion haemoglobin concentration was 8·1 g/dL (1·1), but varied according to the clinical rationale for transfusion.
