The twisted light modes used in modern atomic physics experiments can be contaminated by small admixtures of plane wave radiation. Although these admixtures hardly reveal themselves in the beam intensity profile, they may seriously affect the outcome of high precision spectroscopy measurements. In the present study we propose a method for diagnosing such a plane wave contamination, which is based on the analysis of the magnetic sublevel population of atoms or ions interacting with the "twisted + plane wave" radiation. In order to theoretically investigate the sublevel populations, we solve the Liouville-von Neumann equation for the time evolution of atomic density matrix. The proposed method is illustrated for the electric dipole $5s \, {}^{2}\mathrm{S}_{1/2} \, - \, 5p \, {}^{2}\mathrm{P}_{3/2}$ transition in Rb induced by (linearly, radially, or azimuthally polarized) vortex light with just a small contamination. We find that even tiny admixtures of plane wave radiation can lead to remarkable variations in the populations of the ground-state magnetic sublevels. Ascertainment of photonic stopband absolute topological character requires information regarding the Bloch eigenfunction spatial distribution. Consequently, the experimental investigations predominantly restrict themselves to the bulk-boundary correspondence principle and the ensuing emergence of topological surface state. Although capable of establishing the equivalence or inequivalence of bandgaps, the determination of their absolute topological identity remains out of its purview. The alternate method of reflection phase-based identification also provides only contentious improvements owing to the measurement complexities pertaining to the interferometric setups. To circumvent these limitations, we resort to the Kramers-Kronig amplitude-phase causality considerations and propose an experimentally conducive method for bandgap topological character determination directly from the parametric reflectance measurements. Particularly, it has been demonstrated that in case of one-dimensional photonic crystals, polarization-resolved dispersion measurements suffice in qualitatively determining bandgap absolute topological identities. By invoking the translational invariance of the investigated samples, we also define a parameter Differential Effective Mass that encapsulates bandgap topological identities and engenders an experimentally discernible bandgap classifier.

When superconductivity is suppressed by high magnetic fields in La2-xSrxCuO4, striped antiferromagnetic (AFM) order becomes the magnetic ground state of the entire pseudogap regime, up to its end at the doping p* [M. Frachet, I. Vinograd et al., Nat. Phys. 16, 1064 (2020)]. Glass-like freezing of this state is detected in 139La NMR measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1. Here, we present a quantitative analysis of 1/T1 data in the hole-doping range p=x=0.12-0.171, based on the Bloembergen-Purcell-Pound (BPP) theory, modified to include statistical distribution of parameters arising from strong spatial inhomogeneity. We observe spin fluctuations to slow down at temperatures T near the onset of static charge order and, overall, the effect of the field B may be seen as equivalent to strengthening stripe order by approaching p=0.12 doping. In details however, our analysis reveals significant departure from usual field-induced magnetic transitions. The continuous growth of the amplitude of the fluctuating moment with increasing B suggests a nearly-critical state in the B->0 limit, with very weak quasi-static moments possibly confined in small areas like vortex cores. Further, the nucleation of spin order in the vortex cores is shown to account quantitatively for both the value and the p dependence of a field scale characterizing bulk spin freezing. The correlation time of the fluctuating moment appears to depend exponentially on B/T (over the investigated range). This explains the timescale dependence of various experimental manifestations, including why, for transport measurements, the AFM moments may be considered static over a considerable range of B and T. These results make the high-field magnetic ground state up to p* an integral part of the discussion on putative quantum criticality.

The total ionization rate of biharmonic ($\omega + 3\omega$) ionization is studied within the independent particle approximation and the third order perturbation theory. Particular attention is paid to how the polarization of the biharmonic light field affects the total rate. The ratios of the biharmonic ionization rates for linearly and circularly polarized beams as well as for corotating and counterrotating elliptically polarized beams are analyzed, and how they depend on the beam parameters, such as photon frequency or phase between $\omega$ and $3\omega$ light beams. We show that the interference of the biharmonic ionization amplitudes determines the dominance of a particular beam polarization over another and that it can be controlled by an appropriate choice of beam parameters. Furthermore, we demonstrate our findings for the ionization of neon $L$ shell electrons.

We analyze the photo-excitation of atoms with a single valence electron by cylindrically polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beams. Theoretical analysis is performed within the framework of first-order perturbation theory and by expanding the vector potential of the Laguerre-Gaussian beam in terms of its multipole components. For cylindrically polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beams, we show that the (magnetic) sub-components of electric-quadrupole field vary significantly in the beam cross-section with beam waist and radial distance from the beam axis. We discuss the influence of varying magnetic multipole component in the beam cross-section on the sub-level population of a localized atomic target. In addition, we calculate the total excitation rate of electric quadrupole transition ($4s \;^{2}S_{1/2} \rightarrow 3d \;^{2}D_{5/2}$) in a mesoscopic target of Ca$^{+}$ ion. These calculations shows that the total rate of excitation is sensitive to the beam waist and the distance between center of the target and the beam axis. However, the excitation by cylindrically polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam is found more efficient in driving electric quadrupole transition in the mesoscopic atomic target than the circularly polarized beams.

We revisit the notions of the quantum-mechanical sojourn time in the context of the quantum clocks to enquire whether the sojourn time be clocked without the clock affecting the dynamics of the wave motion. Upon recognizing that the positivity of conditional sojourn time is not ensured even in the case of physically co-evolving clock mechanisms, we trace its origins to the non-trivial inadvertent scattering arising from the disparity, however weak, engendered by the very clock potential. Specifically, our investigations focus on the Larmor spin rotation-based unitary clock where the alleviation of these unphysical contributions has been achieved by correcting the mathematical apparatus of extracting the sojourn times. The corrections have been obtained for both the spin precession-based and spin alignment-based scenarios. The sojourn times so obtained are found to have proper high- and low-energy limits and turn out to be positive definite for an arbitrary potential. The regimen provided here is general and appeals equivalently for unitary as well as non-unitary clocks where the clock-induced perturbations couple to the system Hamiltonian.

A simple metamaterial absorber suitable for fabrication over large areas associated with a Fano like resonance is proposed. The proposed designed of the metamaterial absorber consists of photoresist disk arrays on a silicon substrate followed by the deposition of a tri layer of Au, ZnS and Au on the top of the structure. Due to the tri layer, there is a formation of a cavity between the substrate and gold layer on the top of photoresist disk and a waveguide in the ZnS layer in between the gold layers on the substrate and the ZnS layer itself. The Fano like resonance arises due to the interference of the cavity mode and the guided-mode resonance as well as the Woods anomaly. The cavity mode resonance works as continuum mode whereas the guided mode resonance and Woods anomaly work as discrete modes. The spectral position of the resonance can be tuned by just controlling the thickness of the tri layer instead of the structural size and shape modification of the micro and nano-structures as usually done in conventional metamaterial absorbers. This design can be easily scaled for fabrication over large areas as it separates the structuring and deposition processes and makes them sequential thereby avoiding expensive and complex lift off or etching processes which are usually required for conventional metamaterial processing., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Double anodization of aluminium microwires in an acid bath yields cylindrical nanoporous alumina with nonbranching radially emanating pores. The obtained nanoporous alumina is a cylindrically anisotropic as well as a radially inhomogeneous optical medium. Detailed structural characterization reveals that the nanopore diameter varies linearly with the radius of the aluminium microwire along the radial direction. Microcracks form on the alumina shell during the anodization when sufficient thickness is formed due to volume expansion and stress accumulation. The formation of the microcracks can be monitored by the anodization current which shows sudden jumps when the cracks are formed. After removing the remaining aluminium at the core of the anodised wire the anisotropic and inhomogeneous alumina microtube is obtained. Such nanoporous alumina microtubes form unique optical waveguides and are useful for microscale heat transfer applications., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, article
