Abstract

Fossil fuels are depleting at a significantly higher rate, global warming reaching its new high and entire ecosystem suffering from air pollution. Biodiesel has emerged as potential substitute of diesel fuel that can be operated in a conventional diesel engine without any sort of major modification and provides comparable performance and lower emissions. One of the cumbersome tasks is to find the optimum blend of diesel-biodiesel and engine operating parameters. In this regard, many optimization and simulation methods have been used to optimize the biodiesel percentage in blend and engine operating parameters, which gives maximum power output and minimum emissions. There are several optimization techniques such as Genetic algorithm, Ant colony optimization, Grey relational analysis, Response surface methodology, Taguchi, artificial neural network, VIKOR and TOPSIS, which have been employed to optimize the working of a diesel engine run on biodiesel blends. In this research paper, the various optimization methods that have been used in a diesel engine for predicting & optimizing the several output parameters of the input model and ranking them accordingly are discussed. Abstract

A piston is a reciprocating component of an I.C. engine which converts the chemical energy obtained from combustion of fuel into mechanical power. Failure of piston occurs due the induced thermal stresses and the mechanical stresses. The main objective of this work is to design a piston and analyze the temperature and stress distribution by performing structural analysis and thermal analysis on the piston. The factor of safety is determined for the four materials of piston. Modeling of piston is done in Creo parametric 5.0 software. The structural s and thermal analysis of piston is performed using ANSYS workbench and the factor of safety is determined. By determining the factor of safety of the materials, the material with highest factor of safety is to be used to increase the life of the piston. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The demand in usage of advanced material in lightweight Aluminum (Al) has increased drastically in the present, especially in automobile and aerospace applications. Aluminium based Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) has its own advantage that it offers a very low thermal expansion coefficient, high specific strengths, wear and heat resistance as compared to conventional Al alloys. To group all these properties, Aluminum based MMCs have become a very useful method for various industrial applications. Therefore, a combination of Aluminum (Al) and Tungsten carbide-cobalt (WC-Co) is of interest. Al-WC-Co composites with 10 to 35 weight % of WC-Co were fabricated using powder metallurgy process. Then, the powder mixtures were pressed and sintered by using vacuum sintering technique at above 600°C. In this present research, the samples were tested for its hardness by rock well hardness test. It was found that the hardness increased with increase in percentage of WC-Co. The surface morphology of the samples were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). PXRD (Powder X-Ray Diffraction) analysis reveals that, uniform structure of composites was formed in Al-WC-Co. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
