1. The Role of Parental Communication in Supporting the Achievement Needs of Children

Abstract

Parents have an important role in shaping personality and influencing a child's achievement, where this can start from communication between parents and children. Good communication supports increasing children's achievements, which automatically influences the children's needs and motivation. So, closeness and good interpersonal communication skills will be needed between children and their parents. This research aims to explore the role of parental communication in supporting children's achievement needs, especially at Pribadi High School Bandung. This research uses qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach to understand the experiences and views of research subjects. Data was collected through interviews with a number of students and parents at Bandung Private High School. Research findings show that the role of effective communication between parents and children in the aspects of openness, supporiveness and positiveness plays an important role in supporting children's academic achievements, increasing children's self-confidence and independence in achieving academic achievements. Additionally, this research found that parents who are actively involved in their child's education can provide significant emotional and moral support. Based on these findings, researchers recommend that parents pay attention to the quality of their communication with their children and create a supportive environment for their children's academic development.

Abstract

Parent-child communication is the process of sending and receiving messages that occur between parent and child. Parent-child communication is an important factor in forming a good attachment relationship. Without good parent-child communication, there will not be a good attachment relationship. This attachment has a long-term impact from the moment the child is born into the world and throughout his life. Attachment affects a child's emotional, physical and psychological behavior. Children with good attachment will show positive attitudes and behaviors from the results of this attachment relationship, children with bad attachment will show negative attitudes and behaviors. In this study, there is a phenomenon with ABK that is slightly ignored by their biological parents so that children with special needs are cared for by nonbiological parents, therefore the aim of this study is to compare the communication between children with special needs with biological and nonbiological parents. In determining attachment, this study uses Bowbly's attachment theory which states that there are three levels of attachment, namely secure, resistant and avoidant attachment. This research uses qualitative, descriptive methods by applying data collection techniques through in-depth interviews. Interviews were conducted with three key informants, two expert informants and one supporting informant. The results showed that children with special needs have a safe attachment relationship with their nonbiological parents while not safe with their biological parents. Keywords: communication, family, children with special needs, parenting, attachment Abstrak Komunikasi orangtua-anak merupakan proses pengiriman dan penerimaan pesan – pesan yang terjadi di antara orangtua dan anak. Komunikasi orangtua-anak menjadi salah satu faktor penting dalam terbentuknya suatu hubungan kelekatan yang baik. Tanpa adanya komunikasi orangtua-anak yang baik, maka tidak akan terjadi hubungan kelekatan yang baik. Kelekatan ini memiliki dampak yang sifatnya jangka panjang dari sejak anak lahir ke dunia hingga sepanjang hidupnya. Kelekatan berdampak pada perilaku emosional, fisik dan psikis seorang anak. Anak dengan kelekatan yang baik akan menunjukan sikap dan perilaku yang positif dari hasil hubungan kelekatan tersebut begitupun sebaliknya anak dengan kelekatan yang tidak baik akan menunjukan sikap dan perilaku yang negatif. Pada penelitian ini, terdapat fenomena Anak Berkebutuhan Khusus (ABK) yang sedikit diabaikan oleh orangtua kandungnya sehingga ABK diasuh oleh orangtua asuh, maka dari itu tujuan penelitian ini yaitu membandingkan komunikasi kelekatan ABK dengan orangtua kandung dan orangtua asuh. Dalam menentukan kelekatan, penelitian ini menggunakan teori kelekatan dari Bowbly yang menyebutkan bahwa ada tiga tingkat kelekatan yaitu secure attachment (kelekatan aman), resistant attachment (kelekatan cemas) dan avoidant attachment (kelekatan menghindar). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif, deskriptif dengan menerapkan teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam. Wawancara dilakukan dengan tiga orang informan kunci, dua orang informan ahli dan satu orang informan pendukung. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ABK memiliki hubungan kelekatan yang aman dengan orangtua asuhnya sementara tidak aman dengan orangtua kandungnya.

Abstract

Family conformity is essential in children's social development, while resilience can affect their mental well-being, especially in their teens. This study aims to identify the relationship between family conformity, resilience, and mental well-being in adolescents with physical disabilities who experience physical bullying. A descriptive-correlation cross-sectional design was used on 843 youth with disabilities aged 19-22 years in 10 special schools with physical disabilities in Indonesia. Data were collected using a questionnaire about family conformity, resilience, and mental well-being. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23. The correlation of each variable with the Pearson correlation coefficient and the statistical test was set at 0.001. The results showed that adolescents with physical disabilities who experienced physical bullying showed moderate family conformity, high resilience, and high mental well-being. The most positive correlations were found between conformity and resilience, conformity and mental well-being, and resilience and mental well-being. This study has implications for the importance of the role of the family in psychosocial support in achieving mental well-being for adolescents with physical disabilities who experience physical bullying. Interaction with family can encourage adolescents to absorb family values, express themselves, and maintain interaction and communication relationships with family members. Adolescents' understanding and awareness of fostering positive social relationships in a friendly environment can improve mental well-being if family interactions are functioning. Abstract

This study examines the family resilience of deaf children through the perspective of family communication. We examine the relationship between family communication patterns (including conformity and conversation orientation) with family resilience and compare differences in processes in family resilience of family types. Parents of deaf children (n = 129) in Indonesia completed a survey of family communication patterns and family resilience. Our findings show that there is a significant positive relationship between family communication patterns and family resilience, with preference to conversation orientations. All family types were identified as having a relationship with family resilience with different uniqueness in their resilience processes. With the relationship between these two concepts, perhaps the concept of communication patterns in the family can become a theoretical framework that binds the literature on family resilience in a sample of families with deaf children. Abstract

Learning readiness is considered as a supporting factor in academic resilience. Since the situation of school closure and learning from home due to the COVID-19 pandemics, there have been changes in learning methods that require students to readily use online learning. Unfortunately, students' readiness in online learning has not been widely discussed in terms of its effect on the student’s academic resilience. The purpose of this study was to provide information on whether there was a significant relationship between online learning readiness and students' academic resilience during the school-from-home period. Participants in this study consisted of 1.681 students from five high schools in Bandung, Indonesia. The research used questionnaires that were based on the online learning readiness scale and the academic resilience scale. The questionnaires were distributed online. The data in this study were then analyzed using correlational and regression methods. The results showed that there was a moderately significant relationship between student readiness in online learning and student academic resilience during the school-from-home period. Also, online learning readiness significantly predicted student academic resilience through the dimensions of motivation for learning and self-directed learning. This study emphasized the importance of student readiness in online learning as a new learning strategy during school from home in increasing academic resilience and success.
