We demonstrate that emission properties of single quantum dots can be strongly enhanced in presence of single gold nanorods leading to a bright and strongly polarized single photon emission into an optical nanofiber.

We experimentally demonstrate the integration of silicon-vacancy centers in nanodiamonds (SiV-NDs) with an optical nanofiber (ONF). We grow SiV-NDs on seed NDs dispersed on a quartz substrate using a microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition method. First, we search and characterize SiV-NDs on a quartz substrate using an inverted confocal microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM). Subsequently, we pick up SiV-NDs from the quartz substrate and deposit them on the surface of a free-standing ONF using the AFM tip. The fluorescence emission spectrum, photon count rate, and intensity correlations for SiV-NDs are systematically measured., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate a one-sided cavity on an optical nanofiber (ONF) using a composite method. The one-sided composite cavity is created by mounting an asymmetric defect mode grating on an ONF. We design the one-sided composite cavity on an ONF to enhance channeling efficiency into one side of ONF while operating from under- to critical- and over-coupling regimes using numerical simulations. Experimentally, we demonstrate coupling characteristics of the one-sided composite cavity, showing good correspondence with simulation results., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

A nanophotonic-based one-sided cavity is demonstrated using a composite technique. The cavity is designed to maximize channeling efficiency into one side of an optical nanofiber. Cavity coupling characteristics exhibited good correspondence with simulation results.

We report a novel approach to the design and implementation of a tunable cavity on an optical nanofiber (ONF). The key point is to create a composite photonic crystal cavity (CPCC), by combining an ONF and a chirped period defect mode grating. Using numerical simulations we design the CPCC with low scattering loss while tuning the cavity resonance wavelength of \pm10 nm around the designed wavelength. We experimentally demonstrate the tunability of the CPCC, showing good agreement with the simulation results. Recent progress in quantum nanophotonics brings novel ways for manipulating single photons in various nano-waveguides. Among them, one promising approach is to use optical nanofibres (ONFs), tapered optical fibres with sub-wavelength diameter waists. Here, we develop a hybrid system of an ONF and a single quantum dot (QD) operated at cryogenic temperatures. We deposit a single colloidal CdSe QD on an ONF waist and observe emitted photons through the fibre guided modes. We systematically investigate emission characteristics for both the neutral exciton and charged exciton (trion) for one specific QD. We quantitatively show that the trion at cryogenic temperatures acts as an excellent quantum emitter for the ONF and QD hybrid system. The present ONF/QD hybrid system at cryogenic temperatures paves the way for quantum information technologies for manipulating single photons in fibre networks.

Recent progress in quantum photonics with optical nanofibers (ONFs) is reported. Emphasis is on the photon channeling into the fiber guided modes for a hybrid system of an ONF cavity and a single quantum emitter.

Recent advances in the coherent control of single quanta of light, photons, is a topic of prime interest, and is discussed under the banner of quantum photonics. In the last decade, the subwavelength diameter waist of a tapered optical fiber, referred to as an optical nanofiber, has opened promising new avenues in the field of quantum optics, paving the way toward a versatile platform for quantum photonics applications. The key feature of the technique is that the optical field can be tightly confined in the transverse direction while propagating over long distances as a guided mode and enabling strong interaction with the surrounding medium in the evanescent region. This feature has led to surprising possibilities to manipulate single atoms and fiber-guided photons, e.g. the efficient channeling of emission from single atoms and solid-state quantum emitters into the fiber-guided modes, high optical depth with a few atoms around the nanofiber, trapping atoms around a nanofiber, and atomic memories for fiber-guided photons. Furthermore, implementing a moderate longitudinal confinement in nanofiber cavities has enabled the strong coupling regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics to be reached, and the long-range dipole–dipole interaction between quantum emitters mediated by the nanofiber offers a platform for quantum nonlinear optics with an ensemble of atoms. In addition, the presence of a longitudinal component of the guided field has led to unique capabilities for chiral light–matter interactions on nanofibers. In this article, we review the key developments of the nanofiber technology toward a vision for quantum photonics on an all-fiber interface.

We experimentally implement a system of cavity optomagnonics, where a sphere of ferromagnetic material supports whispering gallery modes (WGMs) for photons and the magnetostatic mode for magnons. We observe pronounced nonreciprocity and asymmetry in the sideband signals generated by the magnon-induced Brillouin scattering of light. The spin-orbit coupled nature of the WGM photons, their geometric birefringence and the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the magnon dynamics impose the angular-momentum selection rules in the scattering process and account for the observed phenomena. We demonstrate cavity QED conditions in the Purcell regime for single quantum emitters on the surface of an optical nanofiber. The cavity is formed by combining an optical nanofiber and a nanofabricated grating to create a composite photonic crystal cavity. By using this technique, significant enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate into the nanofiber guided modes is observed for single quantum dots. Our results pave the way for enhanced on-fiber light-matter interfaces with clear applications to quantum networks.

We implemented a photonic crystal nanofiber device by reversibly combining an optical nanofiber and a nanofabricated grating. Using the finite-difference time-domain method, we designed the system for minimal optical loss while tailoring the resonant wavelength and bandwidth of the device. Experimentally, we demonstrated that the combined system shows a strong photonic stop band in good agreement with numerical predictions. The resulting device may be used to realize strong light–matter coupling near the nanofiber surface.

We experimentally investigate the fluorescence photon emission characteristics for single q-dots by using optical nanofibers. We demonstrate that single q-dots can be deposited along an optical nanofiber systematically and reproducibly with a precision of 5 {\mu}m. For single q-dots on an optical nanofiber, we measure the fluorescence photon numbers coupled into the nanofiber and the normalized photon correlations, by varying the excitation laser intensity. We estimate the fluorescence photon coupling efficiency into the nanofiber guided modes to be higher than 9.4\pm3%., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

We demonstrate a method for making precise measurements of the diameter of a tapered optical fiber with a sub-wavelength diameter waist (an optical nanofiber). The essence of the method is to create a composite photonic crystal cavity by mounting a defect-mode grating on an optical nanofiber. The resultant cavity has a resonance wavelength that is sensitive to the nanofiber's diameter, allowing the diameter to be inferred from optical measurements. This method offers a precise, nondestructive, and in situ way to characterize the nanofiber diameter.

The presence of a nanofiber modifies the photon field near the nanofiber. The emission of photons into a certain direction can be enhanced by placing a nanofiber near the photon emitter. We discuss the modification of the photon field by the presence of a nanofiber and evaluate the effect of emission enhancement for a realistic experimental scheme.

This thesis presents single photon generation and spectroscopy using quantum dots (q-dots) on optical nanofibers. Optical nanofibers are essentially vacuum-clad silica fibers with sub-wavelength diameter, which can support only the propagation of the fundamental mode through the guided mode. Optical nanofibers are realized using adiabatically tapered single mode optical fibers. Experiments were performed by depositing colloidal core-shell type CdSeTe (ZnS) q-dots on the optical nanofiber surface. A method is developed to deposit single q-dots systematically and reproducibly along the optical nanofiber. In the view point of investigation of fluorescence photon emission characteristics for single q-dots on optical nanofibers, the absolute fluorescence photon-count rates channeled into the nanofiber guided modes and the normalized photon correlations at various excitation laser intensities are measured. The results are able to obtain the product between the fluorescence photon channeling efficiency and the quantum efficiency of the single q-dots. However, the channeling efficiency cannot be determined without accurate information on the quantum efficiency of the single q-dots. Therefore, a method is devised to determine the channeling of fluorescence photons from single q-dots into the guided modes by measuring the fluorescence photon-count rates through the guided and radiation modes simultaneously. By measuring for various nanofiber diameters, a maximum channeling efficiency obtained to be 22.0 (±4.8)% at a fiber diameter of 350 nm for an emission wavelength of 780 nm. The measured results completely reproduce the theoretical predictions within the experimental error. We demonstrate in situ measurements of fluorescence quantum efficiency of single q-dots using the present nanofiber technique. We determine fluorescence quantum efficiency of single q-dots accurately by assuming the theoretical values for the channeling efficiency from the product of the channeling efficiency and the quantum efficiency. We demonstrate that one can pick up one q-dot on the nanofiber with fluorescence quantum efficiency higher than the average value measured for an ensemble. Thus, the optical nanofiber method offers a promising way for generating and manipulating single photons. This work should provide a basis for extending the optical nanofiber method to a general technique in quantum optics, which may open new possibilities in quantum information technologies., 2012

A tunable nanophotonic cavity with a wide tunability of ±10 nm is demonstrated using an optical nanofiber. The key point of the method is to combine the optical nanofiber with a chirped-period defect-mode grating.

We realize a photonic crystal cavity by mounting an optical nanofiber on a nanostructured grating which includes a designed defect. The device has a Q-factor of ∼ 1000 and excellent coupling to the nanofiber fundamental mode.
