Vortex beams are stable solutions of Maxwell's equations that carry phase singularities and orbital angular momentum, unique properties that give rise to many applications in the basic sciences, optical communications, and quantum technologies. Scalable integration and fabrication of vortex beam emitters will allow these applications to flourish and enable new applications not possible with traditional optics. Here we present a general framework to generate integrated vortex beam emitters using photonic inverse design. We experimentally demonstrate generation of vortex beams with angular momentum spanning -3$\hbar$ to 3$\hbar$. We show the generality of this design procedure by designing a vortex beam multiplexer capable of exciting a custom vortex beam fiber. Finally, we produce foundry-fabricated beam emitters with wide-bandwidths and high-efficiencies that take advantage of a multi-layer heterogeneous integration.

Stokes Raman scattering is known to be a particularly robust nonlinearity, occurring in virtually every material, with spectra defined by the material and strengths dependent on the material as well as light intensities. This ubiquity has made it an indispensable tool in spectroscopy, but also presents itself as a stubborn source of noise or parasitic emission in several applications. Here, we show that orbital angular momentum carrying light beams experiencing spin-orbit interactions can fundamentally alter the selection rules for Raman scattering. This enables tailoring its spectral shape (by over half the Raman shift in a given material) as well as strength (by about 100 times) simply by controlling the topological charge of light, which is a capability of utility across the multitude of applications where modulating Raman scattering is desired., Comment: 28 pages, 3 main figures and 5 supplementary figures

Optical rotation, a form of optical activity, is a phenomenon employed in various metrological applications and industries including chemical, food, and pharmaceutical. In naturally-occurring, as well as structured media, the integrated effect is, however, typically small. Here, we demonstrate that, by exploiting the inherent and stable spin-orbit interaction of orbital angular momentum fiber modes, giant, scalable optical activity can be obtained, and that we can use this effect to realize a new type of wavemeter by exploiting its optical rotary dispersion. Ring-core optical fibers have been designed to carry orbital angular momentum modes. We demonstrate the imaging of these modes, individually identifying modes separated temporally by only 30~ps. A single-pixel camera operating in the short-wave infrared detection range is used to image the 1550~nm wavelength optical modes. With this technique, examination of these optical modes can be performed with significantly higher temporal resolution than is possible with conventional imaging systems, such that the imaging of modes separated by spin-orbit coupling is achieved and evaluated. Deconvolution is required to separate the instrument response from the optical mode signal, increasing the clarity and temporal resolution of the measurement system.

Interest in the nonlinear properties of multi-mode optical waveguides has seen a recent resurgence on account of the large dimensionality afforded by the platform. However, a perceived fundamental limitation of intermodal parametric interactions - that they are impractically narrowband - has yet to be solved. Here we show that by engineering the relative group velocity within the discrete spatial degree of freedom, we can tailor the phase matching bandwidth of intermodal parametric nonlinearities. We demonstrate group-velocity-tailored four-wave mixing between the $LP_{0,4}$ and $LP_{0,5}$ modes of a multi-mode fiber with unprecedented gain bandwidths (>60 nm at ~1550 nm). As evidence of the technological utility of this methodology, we seed this process to generate a high-peak-power wavelength-tunable fiber laser in the Ti:Sapphire wavelength regime. More generally, with the combination of intermodal interactions, which dramatically expand the phase matching degrees of freedom for nonlinear optics, and intermodal group velocity engineering, which enables tailoring the bandwidth of such interactions, we showcase a platform for nonlinear optics that can be broadband while being wavelength agnostic., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Nonlinear optical wave propagation manifests in a multitude of frequencies generated from quantum-noise, and selecting desired nonlinear products usually requires seeding the medium with extraneous waves, employing spatial or spectral filters, or operation in resonant cavities. This is especially true for multimode systems because of their high density of states. Here we report the discovery of a self-action effect, originating from quantum noise, leading to complete nonlinear optical conversion of an ultrashort soliton pulse between two distinct, spatially coherent eigenmodes that are frequency-separated by one Raman Stokes shift. That systematic nonlinear spatial reconfiguration occurs in fibers with mode counts exceeding 10,000, which are often deemed to be chaotic, points to the fundamental role of intermodal group velocity dispersion in the selection rules for multimode nonlinear optics. We demonstrate wideband spectral translations of ~70% of the carrier frequency, and the generation of record, Megawatt peak-power pulses in the biologically crucial 1300-nm spectral window, directly out of a flexible optical fiber. More generally, this novel nonlinear coupling mechanism may be applied to fibers or on-chip waveguides, and facilitate, power-scalable spatially coherent, ultrashort pulse generation from the visible to the mid-IR.

Quantum networks are the ultimate target in quantum communication, where many connected users can share information carried by quantum systems. The keystones of such structures are the reliable generation, transmission and manipulation of quantum states. Two-dimensional quantum states, qubits, are steadily adopted as information units. However, high-dimensional quantum states, qudits, constitute a richer resource for future quantum networks, exceeding the limitations imposed by the ubiquitous qubits. The generation and manipulation of such $D$-level systems have been improved over the last ten years, but their reliable transmission between remote locations remains the main challenge. Here, we show how a recent air-core fiber supporting orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes can be exploited to faithfully transmit $D$-dimensional states. Four OAM quantum states and their superpositions are created, propagated in a 1.2 km long fiber and detected with high fidelities. In addition, three quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols are implemented as concrete applications to assert the practicality of our results. This experiment enhances the distribution of high-dimensional quantum states, attesting the orbital angular momentum as vessel for the future quantum network.

Interaction of spin and intrinsic orbital angular momentum of light is observed, as evidenced by length-dependent rotations of both spatial patterns and optical polarization in a cylindrically-symmetric isotropic optical fiber.
