Pet ownership and therapy dogs as companion animals and emotional support have potential health benefits. We report the experiences at a COVID-19 vaccination center after authorizing children's vaccines. When the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years was authorized for emergency use, we adapted the center's space to receive children, adding cartoon posters and balloons and using children's adhesive bandages, among others. Located at a Campus with six health professional schools, medical students dressed as storybook or movie characters. Children were asked to make drawings during the post vaccination observation period. We incorporated therapy dogs as part of our strategy for a child-friendly center during vaccination activities. Parents expressed that the COVID-19 immunization seemed to be better accepted by children as the dogs in the center entertained them. Many children were in close contact with the dogs while receiving the shots, caressing them, or having the small dogs on their laps. Children's drawings reflected colors, flowers, families, images of happiness, dogs with their names, their own pets, and superhero characters. There were no negative images of syringes, injections, or germs. To our knowledge, this was the only vaccine center in Puerto Rico that implemented therapy dogs as a strategy to create a friendly environment for COVID 19 immunization efforts targeted for children. Based on this experience, we encourage the use of therapy dogs in other immunization activities and will further gather prospective data in the future.

Physical rehabilitation plays a crucial role in restoring motor function following injuries or surgeries. However, the challenge of overcrowded waiting lists often hampers doctors' ability to monitor patients' recovery progress in person. Deep Learning methods offer a solution by enabling doctors to optimize their time with each patient and distinguish between those requiring specific attention and those making positive progress. Doctors use the flexion angle of limbs as a cue to assess a patient's mobility level during rehabilitation. From a Computer Vision perspective, this task can be framed as automatically estimating the pose of the target body limbs in an image. The objectives of this study can be summarized as follows: (i) evaluating and comparing multiple pose estimation methods; (ii) analyzing how the subject's position and camera viewpoint impact the estimation; and (iii) determining whether 3D estimation methods are necessary or if 2D estimation suffices for this purpose. To conduct this technical study, and due to the limited availability of public datasets related to physical rehabilitation exercises, we introduced a new dataset featuring 27 individuals performing eight diverse physical rehabilitation exercises focusing on various limbs and body positions. Each exercise was recorded using five RGB cameras capturing different viewpoints of the person. An infrared tracking system named OptiTrack was utilized to establish the ground truth positions of the joints in the limbs under study. The results, supported by statistical tests, show that not all state-of-the-art pose estimators perform equally in the presented situations (e.g., patient lying on the stretcher vs. standing). Statistical differences exist between camera viewpoints, with the frontal view being the most convenient. Additionally, the study concludes that 2D pose estimators are adequate for estimating joint angles given the selected camera viewpoints.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of honeybee genetic origin, climate type and the interactions between these variables on the prevalence and infestation levels of Varroa in a large population of honeybee colonies (n = 1134). For each colony, the morphotype, haplotype and climate type were determined. No differences between the Africanized, European and Hybrid morphotypes were found for the prevalence and infestation levels of Varroa ( p > 0.05). Differences between honeybee haplotypes were found for the prevalence of Varroa ( p < 0.05), and the prevalence was higher in the African haplotype than in the European haplotype. No differences between honeybee haplotypes were found for the infestation levels of Varroa ( p > 0.05). Differences were found between climate type for the prevalence and infestation levels of Varroa ( p < 0.05): the temperate sub-humid climate had a higher prevalence and higher infestation levels than the semi-warm climate and the warm sub-humid climate. Correlations between the infestation levels of Varroa and mean annual temperature, mean annual precipitation, winter precipitation and Lang index were found.

Monkeypox (Mpox) is an emerging zoonotic disease with the potential for severe complications. Early identification and diagnosis are essential to prompt treatment, control its spread, and reduce the risk of human-to-human transmission. This study aimed to develop a clinical diagnostic tool and describe the clinical and sociodemographic features of 19 PCR-confirmed Mpox cases during an outbreak in a nonendemic region of northwestern Mexico. The median age of patients was 35 years, and most were male. Mpox-positive patients commonly reported symptoms such as fever, lumbago, and asthenia, in addition to experiencing painful ulcers and a high frequency of HIV infection among people living with HIV (PLWH). Two diagnostic models using logistic regression were devised, with the best model exhibiting a prediction accuracy of 0.92 (95% CI: 0.8-1), a sensitivity of 0.86, and a specificity of 0.93. The high predictive values and accuracy of the top-performing model highlight its potential to significantly improve early Mpox diagnosis and treatment in clinical settings, aiding in the control of future outbreaks.

Background: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is effective in treating chronic neuropathic pain. A screening trial is typically conducted prior to implantation to evaluate whether a patient is a good candidate for SCS. However, the need for a screening trial has been debated. We evaluated real-world clinical outcomes in patients who underwent a single-stage procedure to receive SCS therapy (i.e., no screening trial period) (SS-SCS)., Methods: This observational, multicentre, real-world consecutive case series evaluated SS-SCS chronic pain patients. Pain and other functional outcomes were collected as part of standard care by site personnel with no sponsor involvement. Assessments included Numerical rating scale (NRS), Percent Pain Relief (PPR) and EQ-5D-5L (EuroQol 5 Dimensions-5L), recorded prior to SCS and following implantation., Results: A total of 171 chronic pain patients (mean age: 59.4; 53.2% females) underwent a single-stage procedure (mean last follow-up, 408 days) and were included in the analysis. A 5.0 ​± ​2.1-point improvement in overall pain was reported at 3 months and sustained until the last follow-up post-implantation (p ​< ​0.0001). At last follow-up, 50.3% (86/171) of patients reported an NRS pain score ≤3. Additionally, quality of life also improved (46.1-point change, from 70.2 to 25) at the last follow-up, based on EQ-5D-5L scores., Conclusions: In routine clinical practice, SS-SCS can provide significant long-term pain relief and improve quality of life in chronic pain patients. Helical bilayer nanographenes (HBNGs) are chiral π-extended aromatic compounds consisting of two π-π stacked hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) joined by a helicene, thus resembling van der Waals layered 2D materials. Herein, we compare [9]HBNG , [10]HBNG , and [11]HBNG helical bilayers endowed with [9], [10], and [11]helicenes embedded in their structure, respectively. Interestingly, the helicene length defines the overlapping degree between the two HBCs (number of benzene rings involved in π-π interactions between the two layers), being 26, 14, and 10 benzene rings, respectively, according to the X-ray analysis. Unexpectedly, the electrochemical study shows that the lesser π-extended system [9]HBNG shows the strongest electron donor character, in part by interlayer exchange resonance, and more red-shifted values of emission. Furthermore, [9]HBNG also shows exceptional chiroptical properties with the biggest values of g abs and g lum (3.6 × 10 -2 ) when compared to [10]HBNG and [11]HBNG owing to the fine alignment in the configuration of [9]HBNG between its electric and magnetic dipole transition moments. Furthermore, spectroelectrochemical studies as well as the fluorescence spectroscopy support the aforementioned experimental findings, thus confirming the strong impact of the helicene length on the properties of this new family of bilayer nanographenes.

Optimising available resources and minimising production costs and throughput time is vital for first-tier suppliers in the worldwide automotive sector. To develop this type of optimisation and efficiency, MAHLE applied Action Research (AR) in one of its factories located in Spain. A multidisciplinary collaborative work team was created with the aim of deploying the AR initiative in combination with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma tools. Four improvement and learning cycles were deployed and key performance metrics were defined to collect and measure data in order to analyse the improvements achieved. The application of the AR initiative in the production line of a power filter device enabled improvements in both production times and quality indicators in the manufacturing process. The most outstanding results were the improvements made in the decrease in initial throughput time (34.78%) and in average daily rejections (73.53%). Historical records (1980-2018) of potentially toxic phytoplankton and phycotoxins on the Argentine Continental Shelf (35°S-56.5°S) and adjacent ocean waters were systematically reviewed from scientific literature to assess their abundance and diversity over spatial and temporal scales. Records increased from 124 in the period 1980-1992 to 638 in 2006-2018, and the scanned area expanded from coastal to offshore waters including the shelf-break front. Alexandrium was the most reported genus (54%) during 1980-1992 and Pseudo-nitzschia (52%) during 1993-2005. By 2006-2018, a higher diversity was documented: Alexandrium (20%), Dinophysis (32%), Pseudo-nitzschia (31%), and the most recently described potentially toxic dinoflagellates of the family Amphidomataceae (8%). Likewise, a wider spectrum of phycotoxins was documented in the last decade, with lipophilic (LSTs) and paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) as the most recorded. Increased records are related to intensified monitoring, more detailed taxonomic analyses and more sensitive chemical techniques for marine biotoxin detection. This quantitative assessment brings light to the widespread occurrence of HABs along contrasting areas of the Patagonian Shelf and sets the basis for ecosystem risk evaluation. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and Raman optical activity (ROA) were observed in a single spectroscopic experiment for a purely organic molecule, an event that had so far been limited to lanthanide-based complexes. The present observation was achieved for [16]cycloparaphenylene lemniscate, a double macrocycle constrained by a rigid 9,9'-bicarbazole subunit, which introduces a chirality source and allows the molecule to be resolved into two configurationally stable enantiomers. Distortion of oligophenylene loops in this lemniscular structure produces a large magnetic transition dipole moment while maintaining the π-conjugation-induced enhancement of the Raman signal, causing the appearance of the CPL/ROA couple. A two-photon mechanism is proposed to explain the population of the lowest-energy excited electronic state prior to the simultaneous emission-scattering event., (© 2022 The Authors. Objetive: To perform a score with early clinical and radiological findings after a TBI that identifies the patients who in their subsequent evolution are going to undergo DC., Method: Observational study of a retrospective cohort of patients who, after a TBI, enter the Neurocritical Section of the Intensive Care Unit of our hospital for a period of 5 years (2014-2018). Detection of clinical and radiological criteria and generation of all possible models with significant, clinically relevant and easy to detect early variables. Selection of the one with the lowest Bayesian Information Criterion and Akaike Information Criterion values for the creation of the score. Calibration and internal validation of the score using the Hosmer-Lemeshow and a bootstrapping analysis with 1000 re-samples respectively., Results: 37 DC were performed in 153 patients who were admitted after a TBI. The resulting final model included Cerebral Midline Deviation, GCS and Ventricular Collapse with an Area under ROC Curve: 0.84 (95% IC 0.78-0.91) and Hosmer-Lemeshow p=0.71. The developed score detected well those patients who were going to need an early DC (first 24h) after a TBI (2.5±0.5) but not those who would need it in a later stage of their disease (1.7±0.8). However, it seems to advice us about the patients who, although not requiring an early DC are likely to need it later in their evolution (DC after 24h vs. do not require DC, 1.7±0.8 vs. 1±0.7; p=0.002)., Conclusion: We have developed a prognostic score using early clinical-radiological criteria that, in our environment, detects with good sensitivity and specificity those patients who, after a TBI, will require a DC., (Copyright © 2020 Sociedad Española de Neurocirugía. In this article the Raman and Raman Optical Activity (ROA) spectra of a series of enantiomeric twisted anthracenes are presented. The evolution of their vibrational spectra is understood in the context of the variation of π-electron delocalization as a result of the twisting imparted by the belt structure and in terms of the modulation of the resonance Raman/ROA effects which are photonic properties also tuned by anthracene twisting. The Raman/ROA vibrational spectra are simulated by several theoretical approaches to account for their vibrational and electronic properties including the theoretical evaluation of resonance effects. We furthermore incorporate a vibrational and ROA activity dissection analysis as provided in the Pyvib2 program valid to establish correlations among vibrational modes of different molecules with different electronic structures and equivalent vibrational dynamics. This paper is one of the very first attempts to use ROA spectroscopy in π-conjugated molecules with twisted and helical morphologies that contrast with the well-known cases of ROA studies of chiral helicenes in which the impact of π-electron delocalization in the electronic/photonic/vibrational (Raman/ROA) spectra is negligible.

Clinical trials of cell therapies that target stroke started at the beginning of this century and they have experienced a significant boost in recent years as a result of promising data from basic research studies. The increase in the information available has paved the way to carry out more innovative and varied human studies. Efforts have focused on the search for a safe and effective treatment to stimulate neuro-regeneration in the brain and to reduce the sequelae of stroke in patients. Therefore, this review aims to evaluate the clinical trials using cell therapy to treat stroke published to date and assess their limitations. From 2000 to date, most of the published clinical trials have focused on phases I or II, and the vast majority of them demonstrate that stem cells are essentially safe to use when administered by different routes, with transient and mild adverse events that do not generally have severe consequences for health. In general, there is considerable variation in the trials in terms of statistical design, sample size, the cells used, the routes of administration, and the functional assessments (both at baseline and follow-up), making it difficult to compare the studies. From this general description, possibly the experimental protocol is the main element to improve in future studies. Establishing an adequate experimental and statistical design will be essential to obtain favorable and reliable results when conducting phase III clinical trials. Thus, it is necessary to standardize the criteria used in these clinical trials in order to aid comparison. Poly(phenylacetylene)s are a family of helical polymers constituted by conjugated double bonds. Raman spectra of these polymers show a structural fingerprint of the polyene backbone which, in combination with its helical orientation, makes them good candidates to be studied by Raman optical activity (ROA). Four different well-known poly(phenylacetylene)s adopting different scaffolds and ten different helical senses have been prepared. Raman and ROA spectra were recorded and allowed to establish ROA-spectrum/helical-sense relationships: a left/right-handed orientation of the polyene backbone (M helix /P helix ) produces a triplet of positive/negative ROA bands. Raman and ROA spectra of each polymer exhibited the same profile, and the sign of the ROA spectrum was opposite to the lowest-energy electronic circular dichroism (ECD) band, indicating a resonance effect. Resonance ROA appears then as an indicator of the helical sense of poly(phenylacetylene)s, especially for those with an extra Cotton band in the ECD spectrum, where a wrong helical sense is assigned based on ECD, while ROA alerts of this misassignment., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Oligorylenes have been the focus of research during the journey toward intrinsically conducting polyrylene. Recently, the description of diradicaloid and tetraradicaloid properties in long oligorylene molecules has revived the old question about their electronic structures which is of current interest in the context of the properties of graphene nanoribbons. Here we show that the armchair edges of smaller oligorylenes are embedded within aromatic units and they transform into armchair cis-polyacetylenic structures for octarylene and longer. Concomitantly, the short zig-zag edges of oligorylenes stabilize diradicaloid and multiradical states. This electronic transformation is proved experimentally by Raman spectroscopy and supported by theoretical modelling.

Oligo-S,S-dioxothienylenevinylenes have been prepared by transferring oxygen atoms to the sulfur atoms using the HOF⋅CH 3 CN complex. Their photophysical properties are presented in comparison with their thiophenevinylene congeners. Introduction  Indolent or chronic mucormycosis is a rare entity that affects both immunosuppressed and immunocompetent individuals. Additionally, its clinical evolution is nonspecific and there is no standardized treatment for this condition. Objective  To describe the clinical characteristics and management of patients with indolent mucormycosis. Methods  In the project of study with chart review in the Interinstitutional secondary care centers, patients with evidence of indolent mucormycosis, defined as pathological confirmation of nasal/paranasal sinus mucormycosis for more than 1 month, were included. All patients underwent complete laboratory workup, imaging studies, surgical treatment and adequate follow-up. No evidence of disease status was defined when patient had subsequent biopsies with no evidence of mucormycosis. Results  We included seven patients, three female and four male subjects. The mean age was 53.14 years. Four patients were immunosuppressed and three immunocompetent. Among the immunosuppressed patients three had diabetes and one had dermatomyositis. The symptoms were nonspecific: facial pain/headache, mucoid discharge and cacosmia were the ones most frequently reported. Maxillary sinus involvement was present in all patients. Two immunosuppressed subjects received amphotericin. Posaconazole was the only treatment in one immunosuppressed patient. All immunocompetent patients had single paranasal sinus disease and received only surgical treatment. All patients are alive and free of disease. Conclusion  Indolent mucormycosis is a new and emerging clinical entity in immunosuppressed and immunocompetent patients. Single paranasal sinus disease is a frequent presentation and should not be overlooked as a differential diagnosis in these patients. Immunocompetent patients should only be treated surgically.

Introducing one or two alkynyl-iron moieties onto a carbo[6]helicene results in organometallic helicenes (2 a,b) that display strong chiroptical activity combined with efficient redox-triggered switching. The neutral and oxidized forms have been studied in detail by electronic and vibrational circular dichroism, as well as by Raman optical activity (ROA) spectroscopy. The experimental results were analyzed and spectra were assigned with the help of first-principles calculations. A diradical dication of a 4,4'-di(bis(1,4-methylphenyl)amino)-p-terphenyl oligomer has been characterized in solid-state by Raman spectroscopy and thermo-spectroscopy together with quantum chemical calculations. The diradical character has been evaluated on the basis of the Raman spectra and as a function of temperature. A complete understanding of the nature of the changes in solid state has been provided based on a pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect, which is feasible owing to the fine balance between quinoidal/aromatic extension among consecutive rings and steric crowding. This study contributes to the further comprehension of the molecular and electronic structures of these particular diradical molecules with strong implications on the understanding of the nature of chemical bonds in the limits of high electronic correlation or π-conjugation., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Several steps of chiral induction have been detected in poly(phenylacetylene)s among their different hierarchical levels of chirality by vibrational circular dichroism, namely, (i) from the stereogenic centers to the innermost polyacetylene helical covalent backbone (helix int ), (ii) from this to the external helix (helix ext ) formed by the side phenyl pendants that form a complementary helix or counter-helix, and (iii) from this pendant helix to the helical solvation sphere (helix solv. ), the last one being observed along this work. The pendant to polyene backbone chiral induction determines the helical structure adopted by the polymer and therefore the solvation helix. This helical structure is promoted by two mechanisms: steric effects and hydrogen bonding. An important finding concerns the demonstration by VCD of how an achiral solvent becomes chirally organized owing to the template effect of the covalent polymer helices, an effect that is silent to other structural techniques such as ECD or AFM and that hence significantly broadens the scope of these previous analyses.

Since 1968, many surgical techniques used in repairing the pars defect of the vertebra have been reported. Technological advances are giving rise to new ways of obtaining the best outcome using less invasive methods, which are more accurate, simple and effective. To treat cases of spondylolysis such as pseudarthrosis, we used neuro-navigation and microscopy through a 2.5-cm skin incision to approach the pars defect, freshen the fracture and place a type of screw that, until now, has never been used for this purpose. This is a novel technique, which guarantees prolonged compression and sufficient stability to facilitate the prompt healing of the vertebra. We present 2 cases of L5 spondylolysis treated with our technique, a modification of Buck's technique. Objective: Two cases of metanephric adenoma are presented, a rare benign renal tumor, and a literature review is done under the current WHO classification (2016)., Methods: Standard histopathological study was performed with hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemistry to analyze the expression of WT, Vimentin, Racemase, CK7, CD10 and RCC., Results: Neoplasms of 3 and 4.5 cm, histologically, exhibiting tubulopapillary architecture. There was no evidence of significant nuclear atypia and mitotic figures. Immunohistochemical study showed positive immunoreaction for WT1 and Vimentin in tumor cells., Conclusions: Two new cases of metanephric adenoma are presented and a review of the literature was performed in order to discuss the prognosis and differential diagnosis of metanephric adenoma. This is a rare tumor and its diagnosis lies on its morphology and its immunohistochemical profile.

The chiroptical features of supramolecular polymers formed from N-heterotriangulenes 1-3 have been investigated by circular dichroism (ECD) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) techniques. In solution, the CD spectra demonstrate that the helicity of the aggregates depends on only the stereogenic centres located at the peripheral chains. In the gel state, the chiroptical features are conditioned by the point chirality of the stereogenic centres and by the achiral solvent utilised. Sonication of the gels formed in CCl 4 reveals both kinetic and thermodynamic phases. These findings reveal the presence of pathway complexity in the gel state triggered by sonication. The described solvent-induced helical stereomutation demonstrates that the gel state can be utilised as an outstanding benchmark for investigating uncommon chiroptical effects and to explore the rules of chirality transmission., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Tri(4-iodo-2,3,5,6-tetrachlorophenyl)methane (2) is reported as a general building block for the synthesis of various π-conjugated polychlorotriphenylmethyl (PTM) radicals. Three push-pull-type triphenylamine-substituted PTM radicals with different substitution patterns were prepared and all exhibited intense inter-valence charge-transfer bands and large two-photon absorption (TPA) cross sections. Moreover, increase of solvent polarity also resulted in improved TPA response. Objective: To observe whether local vaccination rates are improved by a patient and physician education program on the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in Farmacia San José, Lares. According to the Puerto Rico Immunization Registry, the HPV vaccine is currently underutilized., Methods: Patients within the ages of 18 and 26 years who are current patients of Farmacia San José were contacted by phone and approached in person at the pharmacy. Once contacted, patients were provided with educational materials and counseling regarding the risks and benefits of HPV vaccination. The primary outcome for this study is HPV vaccination rates at 4 months after starting the educational program., Results: Only 79 of the 200 attempted patients who were candidates to receive the HPV vaccine were able to be reached by phone. Out of 79 patients, 24 reported they had previously been vaccinated against HPV. After all educational efforts, 4 patients (all insured by government) received vaccination against HPV at the pharmacy. In addition, 16 physicians near the pharmacy were contacted and visited by the pharmacist resident. The physicians agreed to receive educational information regarding the ACIP recommendations for their patients., Conclusion: Although the total number of HPV vaccination administered at the pharmacy during the study period was low, we found an individual patient counseling approach to be much more successful than attempting to coordinate group educational interventions.

Background: The study was conducted to investigate potential association between MTHFR genotypes and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in Puerto Ricans with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treated with metformin. The prevalence of major MTHFR polymorphisms in this cohort was also ascertained., Methods: DNAs from 89 metformin-treated patients with T2DM and DPN were genotyped using the PCR-based RFLP assay for MTHFR677C>T and 1298A>C polymorphisms. Frequency distributions of these variants in the study cohort were compared to those reported for three reference populations (HapMap project) and controls (400 newborn specimens). Chi-square (or Fischer's exact) tests and odds ratios (OR) were used to assess association with DPN susceptibility risk (patients vs. controls) and biochemical markers (wild types vs. carriers)., Results: Sixty-seven percent (67%) of participants carry at least one of these MTHFR polymorphisms. No deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were detected. The genotype and allele frequencies showed statistically significant differences between participants and controls (p<0.0001 and p=0.03, respectively). Results suggest that 1298A>C but not 677C>T is associated with DPN susceptibility in this cohort (p=0.018). Different patterns of allelic dissimilarities are observed when comparing our cohort vs. the three parental ancestries. After sorting individuals by their carrier status, no significant associations were observed between these genetic variants (independently or combined) and any of the biochemical markers (HbA1c, folate, vitamin B12, homocysteine)., Conclusions: Prevalence of major MTHFR variants in Puerto Rican patients with T2DM is first time ever reported. The study provides further evidence on the use of this genetic marker as an independent risk factor for DPN.

New stilbenoid and thiophenic compounds terminally functionalized with donor-donor, acceptor-acceptor, or donor-acceptor moieties and possessing a central [2.2]paracyclophane unit have been prepared, and their properties interpreted in terms of through-bond and through space π-electron delocalization (i.e., π-conjugations). Based on photophysical data, their excited-state properties have been described with a focus on the participation of the central [2.2]paracyclophane in competition with through-bond conjugation in the side arms. To this end, two-photon and one-photon absorption and emission spectroscopy, as a function of temperature, solvent polarity, and pressure in the solid state have been recorded. Furthermore, charge delocalization through the [2.2]paracyclophane in the neutral state and in the oxidized species (radical cations, dications and radical trications) has been investigated, allowing the elucidation of the vibrational Raman fingerprint of through-space charge delocalization. Thus, a complementary approach to both "intermolecular" excitation and charge delocalizations in [2.2]paracyclophane molecules is shown which can serve as models of charge and exciton migration in organic semiconductors.

Objective: Multicystic nephroma (multilocular cystic nephroma, multilocular cyst) is a relatively rare benign neoplasm of the kidney. Most patients are asymptomatic and tumours are usually discovered incidentally., Methods: Between 2010 and 2015, 2 patients with cystic nephroma at our institution were diagnosed and treated. Our study includes two new cases of cystic nephroma and a review of the literature about the differential diagnosis of a cystic renal mass., Results: In this report we present two cases of multilocular cystic nephroma in a 75-year-old-female and a 33-year-old female. They were diagnosed clinically as a renal mass and surgery was performed., Conclusions: Surgery is the main treatment for cystic nephroma. The combination of clinical, biochemical and radiological features may help in lesion characterization, but only histology can provide the definite diagnosis. The differential diagnosis includes multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma and cystic nephroblastoma.

Erdheim-Chester disease is a non-Langerhans histiocytosis. Until 2014 at least 550 cases have been reported. According to European Rare Disease Organization and National Organization for Rare Disorders it is a rare disease. The most common symptom is bone pain in the lower extremities and it usually appears between the 5th and 7th decades of life. The diagnostic is based on immunohistochemical results: S100(+/-), CD68(+), and CD1a(-), the latter 2 are mandatory. The best treatment nowadays is alpha-interferon or pegylated alpha-2. The overall survival is 96% at one year and 68% at 5 years. Central nervous system involvement is associated with a worse outcome. Two cases are presentedwith central nervous system lesions in the absence of lesions in other organs on their onset. Very few cases have been reported with this kind of presentation. We also noted that these patients had recurrences or new lesions at 8 months. The combination of a bis-alkynyl-helicene moiety with two iron centers leads to novel electroactive species displaying unprecedented redox-triggered chiroptical switching. Upon oxidation, strong changes of vibrational modes (either local or extended coupled modes) are detected by vibrational circular dichroism and Raman optical activity. Remarkably, the sign of the optical rotation at 1.54 µm (that is, at wavelengths typically used for telecommunications) changes upon oxidation while the topology and stereochemistry of the helicene remain unchanged., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A complete chiroptical characterization of the supramolecular polymers formed by tricarboxamides and is performed using ECD, VCD and CPL dichroic techniques. The helical aggregates show an intense CPL signal and their absolute P- or M-configuration is assigned with the help of theoretical calculations.

The relationships between the chiroptical activity and the vibrational normal modes of epichlorohydrin have been investigated on the basis of a nonredundant internal coordinate definition not reported until now. These coordinates were verified by comparing, for the lower energy conformers, the diagonal quadratic force constants and were found to display similar values among conformers and to be consistent with the molecular structure of epichlorohydrin and its vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectrum. Boltzmann population factors were used to calculate the weighted sum of the individual VCD and IR spectra of the three lower energy conformers, which accurately fitted the experimental spectra of (R)-epichlorohydrin. The electric and magnetic transition dipole moments of the 24 vibrational normal modes were calculated for the most stable conformers. The combined analysis of these vectors and the normal mode description, given in terms of the potential energy distribution, allowed us to investigate the role of the functional groups (methylene, chlorine) and the type of internal coordinates (stretching, bending, etc.) in the chiroptical activity of the vibrations.

A healthy physiology depends on a plethora of complex interdependent biochemical reactions. In order for these reactions to occur suitably, the enzymes and cofactors that regulate their flow must be present in the proper balance. The term metabolic correction is used to describe a biochemical-physiological process that improves cellular biochemistry as a means to an individual's achieving metabolic or physiological optimization. Part 2 discusses how metabolic correction, through the increase of cofactors, can supply unmet enzyme needs and compensate for nutritional deficiencies induced by improper nutritional intake or by the increased demand for nutrients caused by genetics, health conditions, medications, or physical or environmental stressors. Nutrient insufficiencies are causing an increase in morbidity and mortality, at great cost to our society. In summary, metabolic correction improves enzymatic function and satisfies the increasing demand for nutrients. Metabolic correction can have a significant impact on the reduction of morbidity and mortality and their financial cost to our society and contribute to improving health and well-being.

Human physiology depends on countless biochemical reactions, numerous of which are co-dependent and interrelated. The speed and level of completion of reactions usually depend on the availability of precursors and enzymes. The enzymatic activity depends on the bioavailability of micronutrient cofactors such as vitamins and minerals. In order to achieve a healthy physiological state, the organism requires that biochemical reactions occur at a controlled rate. To achieve this state it is required that metabolic reactions reach what can be considered an optimal metabolic equilibrium. A combination of genetic makeup, dietary patterns, trauma, disease, toxins, medications, and environmental stressors can elevate the demand for the nutrients needed to reach this optimal metabolic equilibrium. In this, part 1, the general concept of metabolic correction is presented with an elaboration explaining how this concept is increasing in importance as we become aware of the presence of genetic variants that affect enzymatic reactions causing metabolic disturbances that themselves favor or promote the disease state. In addition, part 1 reviews how prominent scientists have contributed in fundamental ways to our understanding of the importance of micronutrients in health and disease and in the development of the metabolic correction concept.

By reformulating Raman and ROA invariants we provide ground for the definition of robust modes in ROA spectroscopy. Introduction of two parameters defining robustness helps characterization and assignment of ROA bands. Application and use of robustness parameters to [n]helicenes and oxirane/thiirane derivatives are presented.

The objective of this study was to identify the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex bacterial DNA in samples extracted from fresh cheeses; 95 samples of fresh cheese were obtained from municipal markets in the state of Hidalgo, in central Mexico, and were analyzed in triplicate. The exogenous control for the amplification was the mitochondrial gene for cytochrome b (cyt-b). M. tuberculosis complex DNA was detected by nested-PCR amplification of a fragment of the mpb70 gene in six samples, four of which were obtained from regions with enzootic bovine tuberculosis. These results suggest that cheeses prepared with raw milk contaminated with M. bovis are being sold and consumed by humans, which may cause tuberculosis.

The helical organization of oligo-p-phenylene-based organogelators has been investigated by atomic force microscopy, circular and vibrational circular dichroism, and Raman techniques. Whilst OPPs with more than two phenyl rings in the core self-assemble into left-handed helices, that with a biphenyl core shows an inversion of the supramolecular helicity depending on the formation conditions through the atropisomerism of the biphenyl central unit. Protein denaturation by surfactants has received increased attention in the last years due to its implications in topics such as pharmaceutics, cosmetics, paints, or biotechnology. This phenomenon is highly dependent on the physicochemical (structural) properties of the denaturing agents. In this work, we have measured for the first time the Raman optical activity (ROA) of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the presence of three surfactants (anionic, cationic, and neutral), which has allowed us to detect new spectroscopic insights of the protein-surfactant interaction that conventional Raman spectroscopy cannot. Our work proposes two new groups of ROA marker bands to explore the unfolding of BSA induced by surfactants, which are related to "polar" (amide I and III modes) and "apolar" (methylene bending and phenyl breathing modes) protein sections. The appearance of the former groups is related to the initial attack of the surfactant, while the second groups relate to the hydrophobic unfolding.

In 1990 the article on the first Raman spectrum of a protein using a circularly polarized light as excitation radiation, authored by the group of Prof. L. Barron, was published in ChemComm. In this viewpoint we analyze this pioneering work and we used it as a starting point to highlight, after 20 years since its publication, the most outstanding contributions in the application of the Raman Optical Activity to proteins and biological systems.
