5. The Effects of Single or Combined Supplementation of Probiotics and Prebiotics on Growth Performance, Dietary Energetics, Carcass Traits, and Visceral Mass in Lambs Finished under Subtropical Climate Conditions

Abstract

The aim of this trial was to test the effects of the use of eubiotics (pro- and prebiotics) alone or in combination in the diet of lambs finished under subtropical climate conditions. For this purpose, 40 Pelibuey × Katahdin lambs (29.5 ± 4.8 kg initial live weight) were used in a 93 day growth-performance experiment. Dietary treatments consisted of a cracked corn-based finishing diet supplemented with (1) no eubiotics (control), (2) 3 g of probiotics (live Saccharomyces cerevisiae, SC), (3) 3 g of prebiotics (mannan oligosaccharide plus b-glucans, MOS), and (4) a combination of 1.5 g of SC and 1.5 g of MOS (SC+MOS). Throughout the study, the average temperature humidity index (THI) was 78.60. Compared to controls, supplementation with SC or MOS, alone did not affect average daily gain (ADG), but enhanced feed efficiency by 5.6% and 6.9% (gain-to-feed ratio, G:F) and dietary net energy by 4.6% and 5.9%, respectively. Compared to controls, SC+MOS enhanced ADG (10%), G:F (9.5%), and dietary net energy (7.2%). Lambs fed SC+MOS had also greater ADG, G:F, and dietary net energy compared to lambs fed SC alone. When compared to MOS, the combination enhanced ADG (10.4%, p = 0.04). This effect could be attributed to the increased dry matter intake (7.6%, p = 0.06), as neither G:F nor dietary energy was significantly affected. Compared with controls and SC, supplementation with MOS alone and SC+MOS increased kidney-pelvic-heart fat, while SC supplementation tended (p = 0.08) to reduce 4.1% the relative intestinal mass (as a proportion of empty body weight) when compared to controls. Treatment effects on the other carcass measures were not significant. In the present study, supplemental probiotics and/or prebiotics improved dietary energetic efficiency in lambs finished under subtropical climatic conditions. The combination of probiotics with prebiotics reinforced this positive effect.

6. A theoretical framework to consider energy transfers within growth theory

Abstract

Growth theory has rarely considered energy despite its invisible hand in all physical systems. We develop a theoretical framework that places energy transfers at centerstage of growth theory based on two principles: (1) goods are material rearrangements and (2) such rearrangements are done by energy transferred by prime movers (e.g. workers, engines). We derive the implications of these principles for an autarkic agent that maximizes utility subject to an energy budget constraint and maximizes energy surplus to relax such constraint. The solution to these problems shows that growth is driven by positive marginal energy surplus of energy goods (e.g. rice, oil), yet materializes through prime mover accumulation. This perspective brings under one framework several results from previous attempts to insert energy within growth theory, reconciles economics with natural sciences, and provides a basis for a general reinterpretation of economics and growth as the interplay between human desires and thermodynamic processes., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

This paper presents the Ramath mobile application (app) and its second version using a head mounted display (HMD). Both use augmented reality with the support of game play mechanics in a non-game application, oriented to help 12 to 15 years old students (male and female) to learn several math subjects. We associate concepts such as «gamification» and «problem-based learning» (PBL) within the app, making the subjects much more interesting to the students and encouraging them to be fearless of math by taking advantage of the humans' psychological predisposition to engage in gaming. With the collected information from the research and the help of a predictive algorithm, we try to show how much the technology can help in education., Este trabajo presenta la aplicación móvil Ramath y su segunda versión utilizando un head mounted display (HMD). Ambas usan la realidad aumentada con el apoyo de mecánicas de juego en una aplicación no lúdica, orientada a ayudar a estudiantes (hombres y mujeres) de 12 a 15 años a aprender varias asignaturas de matemáticas. Asociamos conceptos como la «gamificación» y el «aprendizaje basado en problemas» (ABP) dentro de la aplicación, haciendo que los subproyectos sean mucho más interesantes para los estudiantes, animándolos a no tener miedo a las matemáticas, aprovechando la predisposición psicológica de los humanos a participar en juegos. Con la información recopilada en la investigación y la ayuda de un algoritmo predictivo, tratamos de mostrar hasta qué punto la tecnología puede ayudar en la educación.
