During the last few years, patchy colloidal dispersions have emerged as ideal candidates of glass-formers of systems composed of particles that interact with non-isotropic potentials. However, from the computational point of view, the characterization of their dynamical properties close to the glass transition via any kind of molecular dynamics simulation technique can be very difficult due to the slowing down of both the rotational and translational dynamics. Although a plethora of dynamical techniques have been developed to account for the dynamics of patchy colloids, new and complementary simulation techniques are required to explore, much faster and more efficiently, the dynamical arrest transition of patchy colloidal dispersions when computer simulation consists of a large number of particles and, due to the slow particle dynamics at the glass transition, an extended time window is explicitly required. Then, in this contribution, by means of the so-called dynamic-Monte Carlo method, we report on the dynamical arrest transition, both rotational and translational, of a bidisperse patchy colloidal dispersion, following three different paths along the density-temperature plane, including high densities and low temperatures. Although this method has not been extensively tested at extreme thermodynamic conditions, we show that even at the dynamical arrest transition, it allows us to extract good dynamical data from a complex system. Research to prevent releases of brominated flame retardants listed as persistent organic pollutants by the Stockholm Convention (POP-BFRs) was conducted through an international cooperation project in Colombia. Six waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) management facilities implemented: 1) sorting e-waste by product type and color (black, white, and other; henceforth called chromoproducts), 2) sampling test products and their plastic fraction (called sets, separated by polymer type), 3) monitoring mass, bromine and antimony contents by hand-held X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and POP-BFRs such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and 4) differentiated treatment according to categories that used the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (RoHS) hazardousness threshold of 1000 mg ∑PBDEs/kg. This scheme led to the proposal of a methodology for WEEE management called the "chromoproduct approach". 994,230 products were managed and grouped into 222 chromoproducts, from which 77 were analyzed: 50 below RoHS hazardousness (BRH), 16 above RoHS hazardousness (ARH), and 11 unknown RoHS hazardousness (URH). XRF indicators using bromine and antimony contents could rule out pollution in BRH chromoproducts; however, categorization still required GC–MS. One ARH plastics sample had 3620 mg ∑PBDEs/kg, while no POP-BFRs were found in the BRH plastics sample. The implementation of the chromoproduct approach traced 153.6 tonnes of ARH plastics. BRH plastics composition was estimated and used in a pilot-scale closed-loop economic activity. Eight novel compounds incorporating chalcone and coumarin features, namely chalcone‐coumarin‐ hybrid molecules, were designed, synthetized, and evaluated for their activity against human colorectal carcinoma SW480 cell line. According to the results observed, the hybrid with a 2,3‐dimetoxysubstitution pattern displayed the highest activity at the conditions evaluated, with an IC50 value of 25.18±1.12 μM, being even more active than the reference drug (5‐fluorouracil) and the parental compound (7‐methylcoumarin). In addition, this hybrid compound exhibited significant antiproliferative activity in a time‐ and concentration dependent way, suggesting rather a cytostatic or cytotoxic effect. Moreover, a theoretical drug‐like/pharmacokinetics/toxicological study suggested that the most promising hybrid would have a great chance to advance to further preclinical studies as anti‐cancer therapeutic candidate for oral oncological management. Our study evidently identified the potency of chalcone‐coumarin conjugates, particularly the 2,3‐dimetoxysubstituited molecule to be a prototype drug for further investigations toward novel therapeutics treatments of colorectal cancer. The objective was to evaluate the dry matter (DM) accumulation by component, yield, and nutritional composition of forage of four corn hybrids harvested at 121, 128, 135 and 142 d after sowing. In each harvest, five plants were randomly taken and separated into their components (stem, leaves, grain, cob, bracts, and tassel) and DM was determined; chemical composition and in-situ digestibility were analyzed in a composite sample of a whole plant. The accumulation of grain in the total DM increased from 35.8 to 43.9 % from 121 to 142 d to harvest, respectively, and diluted the other components, especially the proportion of stem and leaves, which decreased inversely proportional to the accumulation of grain. Total DM content differed between hybrids, from 3.8 and up to 8.3 percentage units on the same days to harvest. Nonetheless, the hybrid did not affect DM yield or grain production, increasing by 2.1 and 1.4 t ha-1 between harvests, respectively. NDF content decreased and starch increased (both linearly), affecting net energy for lactation, which increased from 1.49 to 1.56 Mcal kg-1 from 121 to 142 d to harvest, respectively. The interaction between days to harvest and hybrid affected starch content, which was 5.2 units higher in a hybrid with similar NFC and NDF content than its counterparts. By mostly using Monte Carlo numerical simulation, this work investigates the densest-known packings and phase behavior of hard spherical capsids, i.e., hard infinitesimally thin spherical caps with a subtended angle larger than the straight angle. The infinitely degenerate densest-known packings are all characterized by hard spherical capsids that interlock and can be subdivided into three families. The first family includes crystalline packings that are constructed by suitably rotating and stacking layers of hexagonally arranged and suitably tilted hard spherical capsids; depending on the successive rotations, the crystalline packings of this family can become the face-centered cubic crystal, the hexagonal close-packed crystal, and their infinitely degenerate variants in the hard-sphere limit. The second family includes crystalline packings that are characterized by rhombic motifs; they all become the face-centered cubic crystal in the hard-sphere limit. The third family includes crystalline packings that are constructed by suitably shifting and stacking layers in which hard spherical capsids are arranged in tightly packed, straight or zigzag, columns; depending on the successive shifts, the crystalline packings of this family can become the face-centered cubic crystal, the hexagonal close-packed crystal, and their infinitely degenerate variants in the hard-sphere limit. In the plane number density vs subtended angle, the phase diagram of hard spherical capsids features a hexagonal columnar liquid-crystalline phase, toward the hard-hemispherical-cap limit, and a plastic-crystalline phase, toward the hard-sphere limit, in addition to the isotropic fluid phase and crystalline phases. On departing from the hard-sphere limit, the increasing propensity of hard spherical capsids to interlock progressively disfavors the plastic-crystalline phase while favoring auto-assemblage into mostly dimeric interlocks in the denser isotropic fluid phase so that a purely entropic isotropic-fluid–plastic-crystal–isotropic-fluid re-entrant sequence of phase transitions is observed in systems of hard spherical capsids with a subtended angle intermediate between the straight angle and the complete angle. Controlling matter at the level of electrons using ultrafast laser sources represents an important challenge for science and technology. Recently, we introduced a general laser control scheme (the Stark control of electrons at interfaces or SCELI) based on the Stark effect that uses the subcycle structure of light to manipulate electron dynamics at semiconductor interfaces [A. Garzón-Ramírez and I. Franco, Phys. Rev. B 98, 121305 (2018)]. Here, we demonstrate that SCELI is also of general applicability in molecule–semiconductor interfaces. We do so by following the quantum dynamics induced by non-resonant few-cycle laser pulses of intermediate intensity (non-perturbative but non-ionizing) across model molecule–semiconductor interfaces of varying level alignments. We show that SCELI induces interfacial charge transfer regardless of the energy level alignment of the interface and even in situations where charge exchange is forbidden via resonant photoexcitation. We further show that the SCELI rate of charge transfer is faster than those offered by resonant photoexcitation routes as it is controlled by the subcycle structure of light. Topological photonics has attracted remarkable attention in recent years due to its ability to generate robust topological states, especially suitable for the study of cavity quantum electrodynamics. In this work, we present a theoretical study of a topological photonic crystal based on the 2D Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model, with corner states induced by a rotational operation on the axis parallel to the interface of two different topologies of a photonic crystal, forming a bowtie cavity. The studied topological photonic crystal presents inversion symmetry due to the rotation operation allowing the simultaneous existence of two non-degenerated corner states: one located in the weak coupling regime and the other in the strong coupling regime. Therefore, we present the emergence of distinctive effects from both regimes, such as the Purcell effect and Rabi splitting. We also address the study of the origin and evolution of the corner states resulting from the bulk-edge-corner correspondence. The topological bowtie cavity studied in this work combines the virtues of topological systems and the extreme confinement offered by cavities with bowtie architecture, which enriches the study of corner states in sophisticated topological structures. Cervical cancer is primarily caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and remains a significant public health concern, particularly in Latin American regions. This comprehensive narrative review addresses the relationship between Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer, focusing on Latin American women. It explores molecular and immunological aspects of HPV infection, its role in cervical cancer development, and the epidemiology in this region, highlighting the prevalence and diversity of HPV genotypes. The impact of vaccination initiatives on cervical cancer rates in Latin America is critically evaluated. The advent of HPV vaccines has presented a significant tool in combating the burden of this malignancy, with notable successes observed in various countries, the latter due to their impact on immune responses. The rhizosphere is a dynamic and highly interactive habitat where diverse microbial communities are established, and it plays crucial roles in plant health and disease dynamics. In this study, microbial communities and functional profiles in the rhizosphere of both asymptomatic and symptomatic apple trees were investigated through amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenomics. The research was conducted at a location in the municipality of Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua State, Mexico, and a total of 22 samples were collected, comprising 12 for amplicon sequencing and 10 for shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Symptomatic trees were identified based on reddish branches and internal necrosis in the trunk and root, while asymptomatic trees exhibited a healthy physiology. The findings showed that the dominant bacterial phyla included Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes, with prevalent genera such as Streptomyces, Pseudomonas, and Rhodanobacter. The fungal communities featured Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota, and Basidiomycota, which were dominated by Fusarium, Penicillium, and Mortierella. In the fungal communities, Mortierellomycota, notably abundant in asymptomatic trees, holds potential as a biocontrol agent, as seen in other studies on the suppression of Fusarium wilt disease. The application of shotgun metagenomic sequencing revealed significant differences in alpha and beta diversities in bacterial communities, suggesting a health-dependent change in species composition and abundance. Functional profile analysis highlighted enzymatic activities associated with lipid synthesis/degradation, amino acid biosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and nucleotide synthesis, which have been documented to participate in symbiotic relationships between plants. These insights not only contribute to understanding the dynamics of rhizosphere microbial activity but also provide valuable perspectives on the potential application of microbial communities for tree health and implications for the management of apple orchards. Receiver channels amplitude and phase calibration in smart antennas is a crucial process to achieve the systems requirement. The implementation of these functions in a programmable device and the procedures for selecting its parameters is not a widely disseminated topic in the specialized literature. This work solves the previous problem by implementing the calibration algorithm in FPGA based on the requirements to guarantee the estimation of the direction of arrival (DOA) with super resolution. The design implemented in Hardware Description Language (HDL) corrects in real time the amplitude and phase errors between channels of the multichannel reception system with low latency and resource consumption. Experimental verification with real signals demonstrates that the errors obtained after calibration are within the expected range and corroborates the effectiveness of the design. The results of an action research process conducted in 2022 at Santo Tomás University, Bogotá, Colombia, with 36 teachers, 12 USTA teachers, and 24 students teachers from the Specialization in Pedagogy and Teaching of the Fundación Universitaria del Área Andina from Bogotá are presented in this article. Participants were divided into two groups based on the training they received in mobile learning strategies, especially those focused on English language communication skills development. The first and second phases of the research focused on diagnosis and the design of pedagogical strategies aimed at optimizing digital competencies in teachers to achieve learning objectives in English. The third phase, or evaluation phase, allowed for an analysis of the impact of implementing the mobile learning model, which emerged as an innovative strategy and an opportunity for professional development for teachers. This study aimed to identify whether appetitive traits predict exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) duration for the first 6 months of life and to assess other predictors of its duration. 186 six- month-old term infants were included. Appetitive traits were assessed at 3–4 months of age. EBF duration, feeding practices, sex, maternal age and education, socioeconomic level, mode of delivery and gestational age were also evaluated. Risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated through generalized linear regression models to identify predictors of EBF for the first 6 months of life. Only 32.9% of infants achieved 6-month EBF. Vaginal birth, not using formula the first 3 days, maternal education ≥ university and slowness in eating significantly increased the probability of EBF for 6 months. Intraoperative neuromonitoring with electroencephalogram (EEG) and processed electroencephalogram (pEEG) allows the evaluation of changes in brain electrical activity and unconsciousness generated by anesthetics, as well as preventing adverse events such as intraoperative recall, drug overdose, hemodynamic and/or neurological compromise, delirium and postoperative cognitive dysfunction. However, cortical electrical activity can be modulated and affected by pathophysiological alterations, independently of the effect of anesthetic drugs, both EEG and pEEG can be helpful in the timely diagnosis of metabolic, hypoxic, and suppression of electrical activity disorders brain, nonconvulsive status epilepticus, intracranial hypertension, hypoperfusion or cerebral ischemia. Routine neuromonitoring with the available monitor is recommended in order to improve our experience in order to achieve a patient personalized and precise anesthesia level, arriving to an optimal dose for the maintenance of the mechanisms involved in the autoregulation of cerebral perfusion, understanding brain physiology, function as well as its interaction with drugs and hemodynamic impact to neurosurgical and non-neurosurgical patients, identifying early signs of possible complications derived from the procedure or due to pharmacological effect and their rapid resolution. Factors such as the Andean uplift, Isthmus of Panama, and climate changes have influenced bird diversity in the Neotropical region. Studying bird species that are widespread in Neotropical highlands and lowlands can help us understand the impact of these factors on taxa diversification. Our main objectives were to determine the biogeographic factors that contributed to the diversification of Euphoniinae and re-evaluate their phylogenetic relationships. The nextRAD and mitochondrial data were utilized to construct phylogenies. The ancestral distribution range was then estimated using a time-calibrated phylogeny, current species ranges, and neotropical regionalization. The phylogenies revealed two main Euphoniinae clades, Chlorophonia and Euphonia, similar to previous findings. Furthermore, each genus has distinctive subclades corresponding to morphology and geography. The biogeographic results suggest that the Andean uplift and the establishment of the western Amazon drove the vicariance of Chlorophonia and Euphonia during the Miocene. The Chlorophonia lineage originated in the Andes mountains and spread to Central America and the Mesoamerican highlands after the formation of the Isthmus of Panama. Meanwhile, the ancestral area of Euphonia was the Amazonas, from which it spread to trans-Andean areas during the Pliocene and Pleistocene due to the separation of the west lowlands from Amazonas due to the Northern Andean uplift. Chlorophonia and Euphonia species migrated to the Atlantic Forest during the Pleistocene through corridors from the East Andean Humid Forest and Amazonas. These two genera had Caribbean invasions with distinct geographic origins and ages. The pigments consumed in grazing give the milk from dual-purpose cows raised in tropical conditions a yellowish color, affecting the quality and price of the milk. This study aimed to develop an economical method with supplementary pectin to antagonize the availability of carotenes by designing microparticles with shellac and palm oil as a viable alternative to protect pectin degradation against rumen microbes. Three preparations of microparticles based on citrus pectin were synthesized: unprotected (PnP), protected with palm oil (PwP), and protected with palm oil and shellac (PwPL) microparticles. Samples were roughly characterized by spectroscopy and electron microscopy techniques. The effect of PnP, PwP, and PwPL on blood metabolites and physicochemical characteristics of the milk of grazing lactating cows was evaluated through in vivo assays. The release of citrus pectin from microparticles was determined as uronic acids using solutions with distinct pH, whereas its degradation was studied using in situ tests. Results revealed that PnP, PwP, and PwPL are amorphous structures with sizes that range from 60 to 265 nm or 750 to 3570 µm and have surface charges that range from −11.5 to −50.2 mV. Samples exhibited characteristic peaks during FTIR analyses that corresponded to O-H, C=O, and COOCH3 groups and bands within the UV-vis region that indicated the absorption of pectin. The EDS analysis revealed the presence of carbon, oxygen, or calcium in samples. The release of uronic acids was higher at pH 2–3 with PwPL. The in situ degradability of PnP, PwP, and PwPL was 99, 28.4, and 17.7%, respectively. Moreover, PwPL decreased the blood concentration of glucose, cholesterol, and lactate. In contrast, 100 g of pectin per animal daily during the feed process reduced yellow coloring. In conclusion, designing particles protected with lipids and polymers as shellac is an economical method that resists degradation at pH levels greater than five. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To test the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of CuidaTEXT: a bidirectional text message intervention to support Latino dementia family caregivers. CuidaTEXT is a six-month, bilingual intervention tailored to caregiver needs (e.g., education, problem-solving, resources). We used convenience sampling and reached 31 potential participants via clinics, registries, community promotion, and online advertising. We enrolled 24 Latino caregivers in a one-arm trial and assessed feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy within six months. None of the participants unsubscribed from CuidaTEXT and 83.3% completed the follow up survey. Most participants (85.7%) reported reading most text messages thoroughly. All participants reported being very or extremely satisfied with the intervention. Participants reported that CuidaTEXT helped a lot (vs not at all, a little, or somehow) in caring for their care recipient (71.4%; n = 15), for themselves (66.7%; n = 14), and understanding more about dementia (85.7%; n = 18). Compared to baseline, at six months caregiver behavioral symptom distress (0–60) decreased from 19.8 to 12.0 and depression (0–30) from 8.8 to 5.4 (p <.05). CuidaTEXT demonstrated high levels of feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy among Latino caregivers. A new approach for generating Gaussian basis sets is reported and tested for atoms from H to Ne. The basis sets thus calculated, named SIGMA basis sets, range from DZ to QZ sizes and have the same composition per shell as Dunning basis sets but with different treatment of the contractions. The standard SIGMA basis sets and their augmented versions have proven to be very suitable for providing good results in atomic and molecular calculations. The performance of the new basis sets is analyzed in terms of total, correlation, and atomization energies, equilibrium distances, and vibrational frequencies in several molecules, and the results are compared at several computational levels with those obtained with the corresponding Dunning and other basis sets. The Attentional Blink (AB) is a phenomenon that reflects difficulty in detecting or identifying the second of two successive targets (T1 and T2) that are presented in rapid succession, between 200-500ms apart. The AB involves indicators of attentional and temporal integration mechanisms related to the early stages of visual processing. The aim of this study was to identify the effects of 24-h of sleep deprivation (total sleep deprivation, TSD) on the attentional and temporal integration mechanisms of the AB. Twenty-two undergraduate students were recorded during five successive days, in these three conditions: baseline (two days), TSD (one day), and recovery (two days). Each day, at around 12:00 h, participants responded to a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation task (RSVP) that presented two targets separated by random intervals from 100 to 1000ms. The attentional mechanisms were assessed by the AB presence, the AB magnitude, and the AB interval, while the temporal integration mechanisms were evaluated by lag-1 sparing and order reversal responses. TSD negatively affected the attentional mechanisms, which is expressed by an overall reduction in performance, an extended AB interval, and a reduced AB magnitude. TSD also negatively affected the temporal integration mechanisms, manifested by an absence of lag-1 sparing and an increase in order reversals. These results suggest that people are still able to respond to two successive stimuli after 24 h without sleep. However, it becomes more difficult to respond to both stimuli because the attentional and temporal integration mechanisms of the AB are impaired. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The death of a child in the intrauterine stage has legal, psychological, spiritual, and health-related connotations that condition the woman's experience. To understand better the processes set in motion around early pregnancy loss, this ethnographic study explores the experiences of miscarriage in a group of 15 women. The following themes are analyzed: Experience of losing the child, spirituality, health care, and the need to physically recognize the child. The study shows that the need women have to honor the child who did not live may be conditioned by the perception of an uncertain loss and by the absence of a place to honor him/her. Attitudes among professionals are revealed that could be perceived as gender-related abuse. The care of women places emphasis on physical aspects, underlining the lack of comprehensive care during the grieving process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Ongoing climate change is presently influencing the distribution ranges of numerous species, with both range expansions and latitudinal shifts being observed. In southern Europe, a biogeographical border that separates African and European biota, while at the same time acting as a migration bridge for many species, these changes are of particular relevance. This study aimed to analyse the responses of nine typically African birds to climate change to provide information on the ongoing and future occupation of Europe by these species. Location: Western Palearctic and surrounding areas. Methods: To this end, the distributions of the species in their native ranges were modelled, both in the present and in future climate scenarios, using their current breeding ranges and a set of topographic and climatic variables. The climatic favourability for the nine species was then combined using fuzzy logic. Results: The results showed that southern Europe is highly favourable for our set of African birds, except for Rüppell's Vulture, and future forecasts indicated that this favourability would increase further north, again excluding the African Vulture. Main conclusions: If the climate continues to warm, further arrivals of individuals are to be expected, increasing the possibility that self‐sustaining populations may become established in southern Europe. Furthermore, new African species may start to occupy this area, with the likelihood of an Africanisation of the European fauna. Considering the role played by southern Europe as a potential focal point for the colonisation of this continent by African species, it is important to track their northward expansion and future spread. Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of a sample of Hispanics in Puerto Rico (PR) toward the transgender community. Methods: A cross‐sectional study addressing Hispanics, aged 21 years or older who lived in PR, was performed from March to September 2021. Participants were invited through online advertisement shared on social media pages. Data were collected via SurveyMonkey and analyzed with Stata 17. Descriptive statistics were employed to summarize findings. Results: A total of 404 participants were sampled. Most were female, 278 (68.8%), had completed at least a bachelor's degree, 292 (72.2%), and referred exposure to trans‐related topics during education, 237 (58.7%). Most correctly defined the terms sex, 257 (63.6%), sexual orientation, 334 (82.7%) and transgenderism, 297 (73.5%). The majority also agreed that transgender individuals should be able to change their name, 353 (93.6%) and undergo gender‐affirming procedures, 335 (88.9%). Most also believed trans individuals were a valuable part of society, 339 (89.9%) and should be allowed free gender expression, 358 (95.0%). Conclusions: PR is characterized by a patriarchal, religious, and conservative culture which could promote a negative attitude toward transgender people. Our findings challenged such assumption. The level of knowledge and positive attitude toward trans individuals identified in this study could counteract the existing violence and stigma affecting this community in PR. Spiking Neural P Systems (SNP) are well-established computing models that take inspiration from spikes between biological neurons; these models have been widely used for both theoretical studies and practical applications. Virus machines (VMs) are an emerging computing paradigm inspired by viral transmission and replication. In this work, a novel extension of VMs inspired by SNPs is presented, called Virus Machines with Host Excitation (VMHEs). In addition, the universality and explicit results between SNPs and VMHEs are compared in both generating and computing mode. The VMHEs defined in this work are shown to be more efficient than SNPs, requiring fewer memory units (hosts in VMHEs and neurons in SNPs) in several tasks, such as a universal machine, which was constructed with 18 hosts less than the 84 neurons in SNPs, and less than other spiking models discussed in the work. Three-dimensional (3D) printing applied in architectural engineering is profoundly changing building technologies and construction processes. Indeed, the wide scope of metamaterials and components manufactured with 3D printing provides unprecedented adaptability and customizability in construction. One of the promising applications of such novel technology concerns metamaterial noise barriers that protect buildings from environmental noise. More specifically, sonic crystal noise barriers (SCNBs) are effective solutions with good sound insulation characteristics (with the advantage of letting air/light pass through). Conversely, the limitations of SCNB are related to their design and manufacturing (new complex design approaches are required to maximize the performance of such devices). To overcome such drawbacks, this research proposes a novel methodological approach to design and customize the topology of SCNBs made achievable with additive manufacturing. First, parametric modeling affords design flexibility and adaptability. Second, iterative performance simulations are set to adjust parameters considering target frequencies. Third, 3D printing allows the prototyping of customized barriers. The methodology is applied to the case of train brake noise. Consumption of sucrose‐sweetened drinks (SSDs) during pregnancy and breastfeeding can lead to various health and metabolism issues, but the potential impact on neurodevelopment and long‐term effects remains unclear. This study aims to examine how maternal consumption of SSDs during gestation and lactation influences anxiety and depression‐related behavior in adult offspring. Adult female CD‐1 mice were randomly assigned to a control group (CG) or a sucrose group (SG) 2 weeks before gestation. The SG had 2 h of access to an SSD (15% w/w, 0.6 kcal/ml) for 2 weeks before mating, during pregnancy, and throughout lactation, totaling 8 weeks. Adult offspring were then evaluated for depressive‐related behaviors and anxiety‐related behaviors. Our findings reveal that perigestational consumption of SSDs does not lead to offspring presenting behaviors related to depression, but it does increase swimming behavior. However, maternal consumption of SSDs could impact the fighting response due to a diminished motivational component. In contrast, perigestational consumption of SSDs has apparent effects on anxiety‐related behavior. Furthermore, female offspring appeared to be particularly vulnerable, exhibiting a higher anxiety index compared with controls. These findings indicate that females could be more vulnerable to the effects of maternal consumption of SSDs, being more susceptible to the presence of anxiety‐related behaviors. Bud rot (BR), caused by Phytophthora palmivora, limits growth and development of oil palms in the American continent, particularly in Colombia. Due to the absence of systematic epidemiological analyses and determination of risk factors associated with BR, this study aimed to employ deterministic mathematical models and frequentist and Bayesian statistical methods to quantify the genetic response and edaphoclimatic variables as risk indicators of BR. From 2011 to 2014, the severity of BR in oil palm crops was recorded monthly in two locations: Tumaco (hot spot) and Villavicencio (cold spot), determining the edaphoclimatic variables at each site. Using the area under the disease progress stairs curve, temporal models were applied to determine the rate of disease development (R0) to quantify risk at locality and genotype levels. Subsequently, the observed intensity and severity levels of BR were adjusted to models such as survival curves, Cox proportional hazard risk and transition probabilities, or Markov states, with the aim of quantifying and characterizing risk factors associated with genotype and edaphoclimatic variables at each location. The risk in Tumaco was three times higher than in Villavicencio, and the R0 values were differential by genotype, with Tenera more susceptible than Hybrids. Moreover, the risk of BR increased when periods of 2–3 months occurred with successive instances of precipitation and relative humidity greater than 150 mm/month and 90%, respectively, and when manganese and zinc levels were below optimal. Modern crop production relies on the application of chemical pesticides and fertilizers causing environmental and economic challenges. In response, less environmentally impactful alternatives have emerged such as the use of beneficial microorganisms. These microorganisms, particularly plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), have demonstrated their ability to enhance plant growth, protect against various stresses, and reduce the need for chemical inputs. Among the PGPB, Bacillus species have garnered attention due to their adaptability and commercial potential. Recent reports have highlighted Bacillus strains as biocontrol agents against phytopathogenic bacteria while concurrently promoting plant growth. We also examined Bacillus plant growth-promoting abilities in Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings. In this study, we assessed the potential of various Bacillus strains to control diverse phytopathogenic bacteria and inhibit quorum sensing using Chromobacterium violaceum as a model system. In conclusion, our results suggest that bacteria of the genus Bacillus hold significant potential for biotechnological applications. Type 2 diabetes (DM2) is an increasingly prevalent disease that challenges tuberculosis (TB) control strategies worldwide. It is significant that DM2 patients with poor glycemic control (PDM2) are prone to developing tuberculosis. Furthermore, elucidating the molecular mechanisms that govern this susceptibility is imperative to address this problem. Therefore, a pilot transcriptomic study was performed. Human blood samples from healthy controls (CTRL, HbA1c < 6.5%), tuberculosis (TB), comorbidity TB-DM2, DM2 (HbA1c 6.5–8.9%), and PDM2 (HbA1c > 10%) groups (n = 4 each) were analyzed by differential expression using microarrays. We use a network strategy to identify potential molecular patterns linking the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) specific for TB-DM2 and PDM2 (p-value < 0.05, fold change > 2). We define OSM, PRKCD, and SOCS3 as key regulatory genes (KRGs) that modulate the immune system and related pathways. RT-qPCR assays confirmed upregulation of OSM, PRKCD, and SOCS3 genes (p < 0.05) in TB-DM2 patients (n = 18) compared to CTRL, DM2, PDM2, or TB groups (n = 17, 19, 15, and 9, respectively). Furthermore, OSM, PRKCD, and SOCS3 were associated with PDM2 susceptibility pathways toward TB-DM2 and formed a putative protein–protein interaction confirmed in STRING. Our results reveal potential molecular patterns where OSM, PRKCD, and SOCS3 are KRGs underlying the compromised immune response and susceptibility of patients with PDM2 to develop tuberculosis. Therefore, this work paved the way for fundamental research of new molecular targets in TB-DM2. Addressing their cellular implications, and the impact on the diagnosis, treatment, and clinical management of TB-DM2 could help improve the strategy to end tuberculosis for this vulnerable population. Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition that causes widespread pain, fatigue, and other symptoms that significantly affect quality of life. The underlying mechanisms of fibromyalgia involve both the immune system and the central nervous system. It has been proposed that changes in multiple ascending and descending pathways in the central nervous system may contribute to increased pain sensitivity in individuals with this condition. Recent research has identified S100 proteins as a new area of interest in fibromyalgia studies. These proteins are a group of small molecular weight proteins involved in inflammation and various functions inside and outside of cells, and they may play a critical role in the development and progression of FM. Although S100B has been the most studied in FM patients, other studies have reported that S100A7, S100A8, S100A9, and S100A12 may also be useful as potential biomarkers or for a deeper understanding of FM pathophysiology. The potential role of S100 proteins in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia could be mediated by RAGE and TLR4, which signal through JNK, ERK, and p38 to activate AP-1 and NF-κB and induce the release of proinflammatory cytokines, thereby producing the inflammation, fatigue, and chronic pain characteristic of fibromyalgia. To gain new perspectives on targeted therapeutic approaches, it is crucial to understand how S100 proteins could impact the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia. The presence of positive bile culture during intraoperative procedures has been associated with elevated morbidity and mortality rates in hepatobiliopancreatic surgeries, contributing to increased healthcare expenditures. However, the precise impact of bactobilia on the development of postoperative complications remains uncertain due to existing disparities in the published literature. In this retrospective cohort study, we assessed 137 patients who underwent major hepatobiliopancreatic surgery to examine the relationship between intraoperative bile culture outcomes and subsequent postoperative infectious complications. Among patients with bactobilia, a significant 35.1% exhibited systemic or local infectious complications, whereas only 11.1% of those with negative culture results experienced any infectious complications (p = 0.002). Similarly, a notable difference was observed in the incidence of surgical site infections, with 24.3% in the bactobilia group compared to 7.9% in the negative culture group (p = 0.01). A total of 74 monomicrobial cultures with microbiological growth were isolated, predominantly featuring Gram-negative microorganisms, primarily Enterobacteriaceae in 49 cultures. Escherichia coli was identified in 37.8% of positive cultures, while Klebsiella pneumoniae was evident in 21.6%. Gram-positive microorganisms were present in 10 cultures, with Enterococcus emerging as the prevailing species. The logistic regression model identified a positive bile culture as an independent factor significantly associated with infection development (OR: 2.26; 95% confidence interval: 1.23-11; p = 0.02). Considering the limitations of the study, these findings underscore the critical importance of conducting bile cultures during the intraoperative phase to enable vigilant monitoring and prompt management of infectious complications. Neonicotinoids are insecticides used worldwide in phytosanitary and biocidal products and veterinary pharmaceuticals. Recently, some restrictions and bans have been imposed due to their adverse effects on nontarget invertebrates, including pollinators. Although they may have direct and indirect effects on wild vertebrates, few studies have assessed exposure to these compounds in wild birds, so our knowledge remains limited. In the present pilot study we have assessed the prevalence of seven neonicotinoid insecticides and some of their metabolites in whole blood samples from 19 European roller (Coracias garrulus) nestlings and five adult common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) in an area treated with neonicotinoids to control the palm weevil (Rynchophorus ferrugineus) in southeastern Spain. One European roller nestling born in a palm tree was positive for thiamethoxam, with a concentration of 2.26 ng mL−1, but no residues of neonicotinoids or their metabolites were found in adult common kestrels. Future studies are needed to elucidate potential exposure to neonicotinoids at different times of the year. Background: The early identification of patients at high-risk for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is essential for providing optimal care and implementing targeted prevention strategies. While the Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE) offers a more accurate prediction of ESRD risk compared to static eGFR-based thresholds, it does not provide insights into the patient-specific biological mechanisms that drive ESRD. This study focused on evaluating the effectiveness of KFRE in a UK-based advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) cohort and investigating whether the integration of a proteomic signature could enhance 5-year ESRD prediction. Methods: Using the Salford Kidney Study biobank, a UK-based prospective cohort of over 3000 non-dialysis CKD patients, 433 patients met our inclusion criteria: a minimum of four eGFR measurements over a two-year period and a linear eGFR trajectory. Plasma samples were obtained and analysed for novel proteomic signals using SWATH-Mass-Spectrometry. The 4-variable UK-calibrated KFRE was calculated for each patient based on their baseline clinical characteristics. Boruta machine learning algorithm was used for the selection of proteins most contributing to differentiation between patient groups. Logistic regression was employed for estimation of ESRD prediction by (1) proteomic features; (2) KFRE; and (3) proteomic features alongside KFRE. Results: SWATH maps with 943 quantified proteins were generated and investigated in tandem with available clinical data to identify potential progression biomarkers. We identified a set of proteins (SPTA1, MYL6 and C6) that, when used alongside the 4-variable UK-KFRE, improved the prediction of 5-year risk of ESRD (AUC = 0.75 vs AUC = 0.70). Functional enrichment analysis revealed Rho GTPases and regulation of the actin cytoskeleton pathways to be statistically significant, inferring their role in kidney function and the pathogenesis of renal disease. Conclusions: Proteins SPTA1, MYL6 and C6, when used alongside the 4-variable UK-KFRE achieve an improved performance when predicting a 5-year risk of ESRD. Specific pathways implicated in the pathogenesis of podocyte dysfunction were also identified, which could serve as potential therapeutic targets. The findings of our study carry implications for comprehending the involvement of the Rho family GTPases in the pathophysiology of kidney disease, advancing our understanding of the proteomic factors influencing susceptibility to renal damage. The widespread adoption of acoustic telemetry has transformed our understanding of marine species' behavior and movement ecology. However, accurately interpreting telemetry data, especially concerning tagging mortality, is essential for drawing valid conclusions. In this study, we scrutinized tagging mortality in 223 individuals across 14 species and evaluated the impact of tagging methodologies, including capture method and size effects. Results reveal high tagging survival rates overall, attributable to the resiliency of the studied species and the rigorous animal welfare protocols followed during tagging procedures. Our results highlight the importance of tailoring array designs to the specific mobility patterns of the studied species for accurate survival assessments. The main purpose of the paper is to show how a magnetoresistive (MR) element can work as a current sensor instead of using a Wheatstone bridge composed by four MR elements, defining the concept of a magnetoresistive shunt (MR-shunt). This concept is reached by considering that once the MR element is biased at a constant current, the voltage drop between its terminals offers information, by the MR effect, of the current to be measured, as happens in a conventional shunt resistor. However, an MR-shunt has the advantage of being a non-dissipative shunt since the current of interest does not circulate through the material, preventing its self-heating. Moreover, it provides galvanic isolation. First, we propose an electronic circuitry enabling the utilization of the available MR sensors integrated into a Wheatstone bridge as sensing elements (MR-shunt). This circuitry allows independent characterization of each of the four elements of the bridge. An independently implemented MR element is also analyzed. Secondly, we propose an electronic conditioning circuit for the MR-shunt, which allows both the bridge-integrated element and the single element to function as current sensors in a similar way to the sensing bridge. Third, the thermal variation in the sensitivity of the MR-shunt, and its temperature coefficient, are obtained. An electronic interface is proposed and analyzed for thermal drift compensation of the MR-shunt current sensitivity. With this hardware compensation, temperature coefficients are experimentally reduced from 0.348%/°C without compensation to −0.008%/°C with compensation for an element integrated in a sensor bridge and from 0.474%/°C to −0.0007%/°C for the single element. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process that occurs in the limited presence of oxygen. This process involves various difficulties during the operation, such as acidification and increased concentration of volatile fatty acids, which can inhibit methane production. Therefore, in this work, the impact of biochar on the co-digestion of untreated sludge and residual biomass under mesophilic conditions was studied. For the production of biochar, the gasification process was used at different temperatures: 759 °C (BL), 798 °C (BM), and 888 °C (BH). This biochar was added in concentrations of 0 g/L, 3.33 g/L, and 6.67 g/L at the beginning of the co-digestion process. The results showed that a concentration of 6.67 g/L with BH biochar increased the PBM by 18% compared to the control sample and reduced the chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 88%. In addition, there was a reduction of volatile fatty acids (VFA) of 42.75%. Furthermore, FTIR analysis demonstrated that biochar has appropriate functional groups for this process. These data suggest a good interaction of biochar with the mixture of sludge and municipal waste, indicating that biochar can improve the anaerobic co-digestion of untreated sludge and municipal waste. The global presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in water sources represents a burgeoning public health concern. Recent studies underscore the urgency of addressing this class of emerging contaminants. In this context, our work focuses on synthesizing a composite material, FexOy/MAF-32, through a streamlined one-pot reaction process, as an adsorbent for diclofenac, an emerging environmental contaminant frequently found in freshwater environments and linked to potential toxicity towards several organisms such as fish and mussels. A thorough characterization was performed to elucidate the structural composition of the composite. The material presents magnetic properties attributed to its superparamagnetic behavior, which facilitates the recovery efficiency of the composite post-diclofenac adsorption. Our study further involves a comparative analysis between the FexOy/MAF-32 and a non-magnetic counterpart, comprised solely of 2-ethylimidazolate zinc polymer. This comparison aims to discern the relative advantages and disadvantages of incorporating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in the contaminant removal process facilitated by a coordination polymer. Background: Respectful Maternal and Neonatal Care (RMNC) maintains and respects a pregnant person's dignity, privacy, informed choice, and confidentiality free from harm and mistreatment. It strives for a positive pregnancy and post-pregnancy care experiences for pregnant people and their families, avoiding any form of obstetric violence. Though RMNC is now widely accepted as a priority in obstetric care, there is a gap in resources and support tools for healthcare wproviders to clearly understand the issue and change long-established practices such as non-humanized caesarean sections. MSI Reproductive Choices (MSI) manages 31 maternities across 7 countries with a zero-tolerance approach towards disrespectful maternity care and obstetric violence. MSI developed and implemented a hybrid training package, which includes an online module and 1-day in-person workshop that allows healthcare providers to explore their beliefs and attitudes towards RMNC. It leverages methodologies used in Values-Clarification-Attitudes-Transformation (VCAT) workshops and behaviour change approaches. Methods: The impact of this training intervention was measured from the healthcare providers' and patients' perspectives. Patient experience of (dis)respectful care was collected from a cross-sectional survey of antenatal and postnatal patients attending MSI maternities in Kenya and Tanzania before and following the RMNC training intervention. Healthcare providers completed pre- and post-workshop surveys at day 1, 90 and 180 to measure any changes in their knowledge, attitudes and perception of intended behaviours regarding RMNC. Results: The results demonstrate that healthcare provider knowledge, attitudes and perceived RMNC practices can be improved with this training interventions. Patients also reported a more positive experience of their maternity care following the training. Conclusion: RMNC is a patient-centred care priority in all MSI maternities. The training bridges the gap in resources currently available to support changes in healthcare wproviders' attitudes and behaviours towards provision of RMNC. Ensuring health system infrastructure supports compassionate obstetric care represents only the first step towards ensuring RMNC. The results from the evaluation of this RMNC provider training intervention demonstrates how healthcare provider knowledge and attitudes may represent a bottleneck to ensuring RMNC that can be overcome using VCAT and behaviour change approaches. Phenotypic differences among populations stem from the interaction between neutral and adaptive processes, and phenotypic plasticity. Although clinal trait variation along climatic gradients often evolves in widely distributed species, it is unknown whether substrate specialization, such as that of Mediterranean gypsum plants, has constrained adaptation to climate. Using a common garden experiment with two contrasting watering treatments, we quantified phenotypic plasticity, assessed evidence for footprints of selection using FST – QST comparisons, and evaluated the ecological factors driving genetically based phenotypic differentiation of 11 populations encompassing the full environmental range of the gypsum shrub Lepidium subulatum. We found evidence for genetic differentiation among populations related to climatic differences, with populations from warmer and drier sites showing lower specific leaf area and leaf N, earlier phenology, greater water use efficiency and greater fitness. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that this differentiation was driven by past divergent selection rather than neutral processes. All populations showed high phenotypic plasticity, indicating that plasticity has not been selected against, even in populations from sites with harsher climatic conditions. Synthesis. Our results indicate that despite strong substrate specialization, adaptive differentiation related to climatic gradients occurs in this species. However, we also found that populations from mesic sites may be particularly vulnerable to future climate change given their relatively lower fitness under both wet and dry conditions. Diagnosing infectious diseases significantly influences patient care, aiding in outbreak identification, response, and public health monitoring. However, the range of FDA-approved molecular tests remains notably limited, especially concerning neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Drawing upon our experience as one of the largest healthcare networks in the greater New York metropolitan area, this viewpoint manuscript aims to spotlight the existing diagnostic landscape and unmet clinical needs for 4 emerging NTDs increasingly prevalent in the United States, additionally, it delves into the possible adverse effects of the FDA's Proposed Rule on Laboratory-Developed Tests for these clinical conditions and the broader spectrum of NTDs. Through a COVID-19 public health intervention implemented across sequenced research trials, we present a community engagement phased framework that embeds intervention implementation: (1) consultation and preparation, (2) collaboration and implementation, and (3) partnership and sustainment. Introduction: severe, rigid hip abduction deformity in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) is an exceptionally uncommon condition. This posture hinders the positioning in the wheelchair and the completion of basic activities of daily living (ADL). Addressing such severe deformities can be quite challenging. Material and methods: a 14-year-old male, with spastic-dystonic quadriplegic CP, developed rigid and severe flexion-abduction contractures in both hips, characterized by 90 degrees of flexion and 100 degrees of abduction. These contractures severely impeded his ability to comfortably use a wheelchair and even pass through doorways. Performing basic ADLs became a significant challenge for both the patient and his caregivers. Results: the treatment approach involved a two-stage surgical procedure, one for each hip, with a two-month interval between them. An extensive release of the fascia latae, gluteus maximus, external rotators, and hip flexors; in combination with a proximal femur osteotomy were performed. To maintain the corrections achieved, long-leg casts connected with two bars were employed, followed by orthotic support and physiotherapy. Following the procedure, lower limb adduction was achieved, and the patient and caregivers were highly satisfied, as ADLs and basic caregiving had been greatly facilitated. Conclusions: while the available literature on the management of severe rigid abduction hip contractures in non-ambulatory CP patients is limited, and treatment options are often complex, the present case underscores the effectiveness of a comprehensive approach involving soft tissue release and bone surgery. Puerto Rico has a history of rich funerary traditions that include the use of cemí and the baquiné. Presently, the practice of extreme embalming has also taken hold, creating funerary displays that include motorcycles, dominoes, and ambulances, among others. However, what can a community do when there are no bodies to grieve? Worse, the deaths themselves are denied? This was an all too real question in the aftermath of 2017‘s Hurricane María. With a rising death count and government denial, people turned to artistic creation and protest to make their voices heard. Memorialisation of the missing and deceased became a crucial part in overcoming the disaster’s trauma, as well as contesting a government that refused to acknowledge its role in the disaster. Culminating in the Verano Boricua of 2019, the Puerto Rican people’s fight against the government’s necropolitics resulted in a boom of creative expression to remember those that the government wanted to forget. Through murals, comics, performance art, and protests, Boricuas resisted marginalisation in unique and memorable ways. By exploring these artistic manifestations, one can recognise Puerto Rican community across the island and in the diaspora and how it sought to honour the deceased while processing grief and trauma. Sporothrix schenckii is one of the etiological agents of sporotrichosis, a cutaneous and subcutaneous infection distributed worldwide. Like other medically relevant fungi, its cell wall is a molecular scaffold to display virulence factors, such as protective pigments, hydrolytic enzymes, and adhesins. Cell wall proteins with adhesive properties have been previously reported, but only a handful of them have been identified and characterized. One of them is Gp70, an abundant cell wall protein mainly found on the surface of yeast-like cells. Since the protein also has a role in the activity of 3-carboxy-cis,cis-muconate cyclase and its abundance is low in highly virulent strains, its role in the Sporothrix–host interaction remains unclear. Here, a set of GP70-silenced strains was generated, and the molecular and phenotypical characterization was performed. The results showed that mutants with high silencing levels showed a significant reduction in the adhesion to laminin and fibrinogen, enzyme activity, and defects in the cell wall composition, which included reduced mannose, rhamnose, and protein content, accompanied by an increment in β-1,3-glucans levels. The cell wall N-linked glycan content was significantly reduced. These strains induced poor TNFα and IL-6 levels when interacting with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells in a dectin-1-, TLR2-, and TLR4-dependent stimulation. The IL-1β and IL-10 levels were significantly higher and were stimulated via dectin-1. Phagocytosis and stimulation of neutrophil extracellular traps by human granulocytes were increased in highly GP70-silenced strains. Furthermore, these mutants showed virulence attenuation in the invertebrate model Galleria mellonella. Our results demonstrate that Gp70 is a versatile protein with adhesin properties, is responsible for the activity of 3-carboxy-cis,cis-muconate cyclase, and is relevant for the S. schenckii–host interaction. Concepción Bay is a socio-economic and ecologically important embayment whose hydrographic variability has been historically regulated by wind-modulated seasonal upwelling events during spring–summer and by freshwater from precipitation and river discharges during fall–winter. This system is subject to several anthropogenic and environmental strains due to the intense port activity and the increasing occurrence of extreme natural events. This study determines a new hydrographic regime and characterizes and analyzes the biogeochemical response of the water column to changes in rainfall and upwelling patterns. Despite the intrusion of nitrate-rich upwelled waters that enhance biological productivity remains more intense during spring–summer, the system remains fertilized year-long due to the occurrence of persistent upwelling pulses during fall–winter. The hydrographic structure presented a two-layer water column that was stratified thermally in spring–summer and primarily by freshwater inputs in fall–winter. Nevertheless, the regular pattern of the rainfall has changed (a decrease in precipitation and an increased frequency of extreme rainfall events), together with recurrent upwelling-favorable wind pulses during the non-upwelling season. This new regime has altered the seasonality of the physicochemical conditions and the structure of the microplanktonic communities, with productive and sanitary implications affecting the biogeochemical status of CB. Direct current motors are widely used in industry applications, and it has become necessary to carry out studies and experiments for their optimization. In this manuscript, a comparison between heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms is presented, specifically, the Steiglitz–McBride, Jaya, Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) algorithms. They were used to estimate the parameters of a dynamic model that approximates the actual responses of current and angular velocity of a DC motor. The inverse of the Euclidean distance between the current and velocity errors was defined as the fitness function for the metaheuristic algorithms. For a more comprehensive comparison between algorithms, other indicators such as mean squared error (MSE), standard deviation, computation time, and key points of the current and velocity responses were used. Simulations were performed with MATLAB/Simulink 2010 using the estimated parameters and compared to the experiments. The results showed that Steiglitz–McBride and GWO are better parametric estimators, performing better than Jaya and GA in real signals and nominal parameters. Indicators say that GWO is more accurate for parametric estimation, with an average MSE of 0.43%, but it requires a high computational cost. On the contrary, Steiglitz–McBride performed with an average MSE of 3.32% but required a much lower computational cost. The GWO presented an error of 1% in the dynamic response using the corresponding indicators. If a more accurate parametric estimation is required, it is recommended to use GWO; however, the heuristic algorithm performed better overall. Intersectional feminist translation provides visibility to the historically hidden or marginalized characters and narratives. This article interrogates the strategies we can apply to translate images into words, that is, to audio describe non-normative identities while adhering to the particularities of audiovisual productions. It poses the question of how to provide a feminist audio description that aligns with the creators' intent. The objective of this study is to analyse the strategies applied to create a gender-conscious AD of a documentary on lesbophobia where ten women share their experiences as non-normative persons. They are defined by a series of intrinsic features such as race, gender expression or age and present a myriad of differences that have irremediably influenced their experience of lesbophobia and how society reads and identifies them. The visual contents in this documentary provide essential information that complements the understanding of the problem by people with visual impairment. This action research study analyses the challenges emerged during the AD production. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a hazardous gas found in natural gas and biogas, lethal over 100 ppm. When released into the atmosphere, it can turn into sulfur dioxide. One option to remove H2S is using porous materials such as zeolites. Among them, mordenite stands out due to its channel structure, wide availability, and low cost. In this work, we evaluated the H2S adsorption capacity of mordenite using a volumetric static method. The results show the adsorption capacity of H2S in mordenite varies with the exchanged cation. The highest was measured in Na‐mordenite (~4.08 mmol H2S/g mordenite). The experimental breakthrough curves for this zeolite confirmed Langmuir‐type adsorption and strong affinity between Na+ cations and H2S. Despite this interaction, the XRD diffractograms of Na‐mordenite show that the material retained its crystalline structure. More information about the differences in the amount of H2S adsorbed in the zeolites caused by the change in exchanged cation was obtained by H2S adsorption followed by FTIR spectroscopy. The spectra show differences in the position of the peaks related to the different adsorption modes of H2S caused by a change in the polarizing power of the cations due to their charge and position inside the zeolite pores. This study presents a green method of producing copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) using aqueous extracts from Sargassum spp. as reducing, stabilizing, and capping agents. The CuNPs created using this algae‐based method are not hazardous, they are eco‐friendly, and less toxic than their chemically synthesized counterparts. The XRD characterization of the CuNPs revealed the presence of Cu and CuO, with a crystallite size ranging from 13 to 17 nm. Following this, the CuNPs were supported onto a carbon substrate, also derived from Sargassum spp. (biochar CSKPH). The CuNPs in biochar (CuNPs‐CSKPH) did not appear in the XRD diffractograms, but the SEM‐EDS results showed that they accounted for 36 % of the copper weight. The voltamperometric study of CuNps‐CSKPH in acid media validated the presence of Cu and the amount was determined to be 2.58 μg. The catalytic activity of CuNPs‐CSKPH was analyzed for the electrochemical reduction of CO2. The use of Sargassum spp. has great potential to tackle two environmental problems simultaneously, by using it as raw material for the synthesis of activated biochar as support, as well as the synthesis of CuNPs, and secondly, by using it as a sustainable material for the electrochemical conversion of CO2. Full plastomes have recently proven to be a valuable data source for resolving recalcitrant phylogenetic relationships in the flowering plant family Bromeliaceae. The study of complete plastomes has additionally led to the discovery of new structural rearrangements and advanced our understanding of bromeliad plastome diversity and evolution. Here, we focus on the study of full plastomes of the bromeliad subfamily Hechtioideae to assess phylogenetic relationships, marker informativeness, and plastome structure and evolution. Using whole‐genome sequencing data, we de novo assembled and annotated new plastid genomes of 19 Hechtioideae species plus one representative each from the Pitcairnioideae and Puyoideae subfamilies and compared them with four additional available plastomes from other bromeliad subfamilies. Our phylogenetic analysis using complete plastome sequences not only recovered the three currently recognized genera of Hechtioideae as monophyletic, strongly supporting Mesoamerantha as sister of Bakerantha and Hechtia, but also improved statistical support at different phylogenetic depths within the subfamily. We identified a set of highly informative loci, some of them explored for the first time in Hechtioideae. Structural rearrangements, including expansions and contractions of the inverted repeats, large inversions, and gene loss and potential pseudogenization were detected mainly within the genus Hechtia. Evolutionary trait rate shifts were associated with the size and guanine–cytosine content of the small single copy and inverted repeats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biopolymers are biodegradable and renewable and can significantly reduce environmental impacts. For this reason, biocomposites based on a plasticized starch and cross-linker matrix and with a microfibrillated OCC cardboard cellulose reinforcement were developed. Biocomposites were prepared by suspension casting with varied amounts of microfibrillated cellulose: 0, 4, 8, and 12 wt%. Polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) was used as a cross-linking, water-soluble, and non-toxic agent. Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) from OCC cardboard showed appropriate properties and potential for good performance as a reinforcement. In general, microfiber incorporation and matrix cross-linking increased crystallization, reduced water adsorption, and improved the physical and tensile properties of the plasticized starch. Biocomposites cross-linked with PEGDE and reinforced with 12 wt% MFC showed the best properties. The chemical and structural changes induced by the cross-linking of starch chains and MFC reinforcement were confirmed by FTIR, NMR, and XRD. Biodegradation higher than 80% was achieved for most biocomposites in 15 days of laboratory compost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
