Nanotechnology can offer a series of new “green” and eco-friendly methods for developing different types of nanoparticles, among which the development of nanomaterials using plant extracts (phytosynthesis) represents one of the most promising areas of research. This present study details the use of lavender flowers (Lavandula angustifolia Mill., well-known for their use in homeopathic applications) for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles with enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Several qualitative and quantitative assays were carried out in order to offer an image of the extracts’ composition (the recorded total phenolics content varied between 21.0 to 40.9 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalents)/g dry weight (d.w.), while the total flavonoids content ranged between 3.57 and 16.8 mg CE (catechin equivalents)/g d.w.), alongside modern analytical methods (such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry—GC-MS, quantifying 12 phytoconstituents present in the extracts). The formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using lavender extract was studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS)/zeta potential, with the selected nanoparticles having crystallite sizes of approx. 14.55 nm (AgNP-L2) and 4.61 nm, respectively (for AgNP-L4), and hydrodynamic diameters of 392.4 nm (for AgNP-L2) and 391.6 nm (for AgNP-L4), determined by DLS. A zeta potential of around −6.4 mV was displayed for both samples while presenting as large aggregates, in which nanoparticle clusters with dimensions of around 130–200 nm can be observed. The biomedical applications of the extracts and the corresponding phytosynthesized nanoparticles were evaluated using antioxidant and antimicrobial assays. The obtained results confirmed the phytosynthesis of the silver nanoparticles using Lavandula angustifolia Mill. extracts, as well as their antioxidant and antimicrobial potential.

Flexible screen-printed electrodes (SPE) were modified in a simple manner with different composite nanomaterials based on carbon allotropes, polymers, and metallic nanoparticles, for amperometric detection of nitrites in soil. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), chitosan (CS), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), 1,8-diaminonaphthalene (1,8-DAN), and a sol-gel (SG) matrix were used for modification of the carbon paste working electrodes. Sensitive and selective detection of nitrite was achieved by using a MWCNT-CS-modified sensor, in acetate buffer at pH 5, at an applied potential of 0.58 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The MWCNT-CS-based sensor displayed a specific sensitivity of 204.4 mA·M−1·cm−2, with a detection limit of 2.3 µM (S/N = 3) in a linear range up to 1.7 mM, showing good stability, reproducibility, and selectivity towards other interfering species. A miniaturized portable system using the developed flexible electrochemical MWCNT-CS-based sensors was dedicated for the detection of nitrite in different samples of soil solutions extracted by using suction lysimeters.

In this study, the chemical distribution of triclocarban (TCC), in natural aqueous systems, between water and sediment, with different chemical compositions of the aqueous phase and different percentages of organic carbon (OC%) in the sediments is presented. The influences of the temperature, of the composition of the aqueous matrices of natural waters and (OC%) in the sediment over the solubility of triclocarban, and its distribution coefficient Kd values were studied. log KD at 25 °C varied between 1.94 and 3.27 for a sediment with 5.50% OC and between 3.95 and 5.93% for a sediment with 6.75% OC, in the studied aqueous systems, with different concentrations of OC in the sediment.

In this work, fullerene (C60) was selected as a model carbon nanomaterial, humic acid (HA) as the model natural organic matter and bisphenol A (BPA), as a moderate hydrophobic organic contaminant. The effects of ionic strength, concentration of organic matter and of the pH over the adsorption of BPA on C60 were studied, as well as the competition between the BPA and the HA at the active sites of the C60. A possible adsorption mechanism was proposed as well as an attempt to study the sorption process in real environmental samples with characteristics alike to the optimum ones found in the synthetic samples studied.

The objective of this work was to develop a sustainable process for the extraction of anthocyanins from red cabbage byproducts using, for the first time, apple vinegar in extractant composition. Our results showed that the mixture 50% (v/v) ethanol–water, acidified with apple vinegar, used in the proportion of 25 g of red cabbage by-products per 100 mL of solvent, was the best solvent for the preparation of an anthocyanin extract with good stability for food applications. The chemical characterization of this extract was performed by FTIR, UV-VIS, HPLC-DAD, and ICP-OES. The stability was evaluated by determining the dynamics of the total polyphenol content (TPC) and the total monomeric anthocyanin pigment content (TAC) during storage. On the basis of the statistical method for analysis of variance (ANOVA), the standard deviation between subsamples and the repeatability standard deviation were determined. The detection limit of the stability test of TPC was 3.68 mg GAE/100 g DW and that of TAC was 0.79 mg Cyd-3-Glu/100 g DW. The red cabbage extract has high TPC and TAC, good stability, and significant application potential. The extracted residues, depleted of anthocyanins and polyphenols with potential allelopathic risks, fulfill the requirements for a fertilizing product and could be used for soil treatment.
