The eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS), with a sky area of 140 square degrees with depth equivalent to the equatorial patch of the final eROSITA all-sky survey, represents the largest continuous non-full-sky X-ray fields to-date, making it the premier data set for measuring the angular power spectrum. In this work, we measure the X-ray angular power spectrum of galaxy clusters and groups in the eFEDS field. We show that the measured power spectrum is consistent with past observations, including the ROSAT All Sky Survey, and the Chandra COSMOS and Bootes fields. The predictions of cluster gas halo model that is calibrated from Chandra observations is also consistent with the eFEDS power spectrum. While the eFEDS does not have large enough sky coverage to provide meaningful cosmological constraints, we predict that the X-ray power spectrum from the cycle 4 of the eROSITA All-Sky Survey (eRASS4) will provide constraints on $\Omega_M$ and $\sigma_8$ at the 10% level., Comment: 10 pages, 4 Figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We define the spatial clustering of X-rays within Jupiter’s northern auroral regions by classifying their distributions into ‘X-ray auroral structures’. Using data from Chandra during Juno’s main mission observations (24 May 2016 – 8 September 2019), we define five X-ray structures based on their ionospheric location and calculate the distribution of auroral photons. The morphology and ionospheric location of these structures allow us to explore the possibility of numerous X-ray auroral magnetospheric drivers. We compare these distributions to Hubble Space Telescope (HST)and Juno (Waves and MAG) data, and a 1D solar wind propagation model to infer the state of Jupiter’s magnetosphere. Our results suggest that the five sub-classes of ‘X-ray structures’ fall under two broad morphologies: fully polar and low latitude emissions. Visibility modelling of each structure suggests the non-uniformity of the photon distributions across the Chandra intervals are likely associated with the switching on/off of magnetospheric drivers as opposed to geometrical effects. The combination of ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray morphological structures is a powerful tool to elucidate the behaviour of both electrons and ions and their link to solar wind/magnetospheric conditions in the absence of an upstream solar monitor.

Giant radio relics are arc-like structures of diffuse, non-thermal synchrotron radiation that trace shock waves induced by galaxy cluster mergers. The particle (re-)acceleration mechanism producing such radio relics is unclear. One major open question is whether relics can be formed directly from a population of thermal seed electrons, or if pre-existing relativistic seed electrons are required. In some cases AGN can provide such a population of sub-GeV electrons. However, it is unclear how common this connection is. In this paper we present LOFAR 140 MHz and VLA L-band radio observations, as well as Chandra data of PSZ2 G096.88+24.18, a merging galaxy cluster system hosting a pair of radio relics. A large patch of diffuse emission connects a bright radio galaxy with one of the relics, likely affecting the properties of the relic. We find that the most plausible explanation for the connection is that the merger shock wave has passed over an AGN lobe. We present Swift observations of 31 sources from the SMS4 catalog, a sample of 137 bright radio sources in the Southern Hemisphere. All these sources had no Chandra or XMM-Newton observations: 24 of these were observed with Swift through a dedicated proposal in 2015, and data for the remaining seven were retrieved from the Swift archive. The reduction and analysis of data collected by the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) led to 20 detections in the 0.3--10 keV band. We provide details of the X-ray emission in this band for these 20 detections, as well as upper limits for the remaining 11 SMS4 sources. When statistics allowed, we investigated the extent of the X-ray emission, the hardness ratio, and we carried out a spectral analysis. We matched the 20 X-ray detected sources with infrared (AllWISE, CatWISE2020) and optical (GSC 2.3.2, DES DR2) catalogs to establish associations with infrared and optical sources, and compared our results with previously published counterparts in these bands. Requiring a detection in both the infrared and the optical bands to establish a candidate counterpart for our X-ray detections, we obtain reliable counterparts for 18 sources, while the remaining two sources need further investigation to establish firm identifications. We find that ~35% of all the SMS4 sources lie below the lower limit of 10.9 Jy for the flux density at 178 MHz. We investigate how the X-ray circumgalactic medium (CGM) of present-day galaxies depends on galaxy morphology and azimuthal angle using mock observations generated from the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. By creating mock stacks of {\it eROSITA}-observed galaxies oriented to be edge-on, we make several observationally-testable predictions for galaxies in the stellar mass range $M_\star=10^{10.7-11.2}\;$M$_{\odot}$. The soft X-ray CGM of disc galaxies is between 60 and 100\% brighter along the semi-major axis compared to the semi-minor axis, between 10-30 kpc. This azimuthal dependence is a consequence of the hot ($T>10^6$ K) CGM being non-spherical: specifically it is flattened along the minor axis such that denser and more luminous gas resides in the disc plane and co-rotates with the galaxy. Outflows enrich and heat the CGM preferentially perpendicular to the disc, but we do not find an observationally-detectable signature along the semi-minor axis. Spheroidal galaxies have hotter CGMs than disc galaxies related to spheroids residing at higher halos masses, which may be measurable through hardness ratios spanning the $0.2-1.5$ keV band. While spheroids appear to have brighter CGMs than discs for the selected fixed $M_\star$ bin, this owes to spheroids having higher stellar and halo masses within that $M_\star$ bin, and obscures the fact that both simulated populations have similar total CGM luminosities at the exact same $M_\star$. Discs have brighter emission inside 20 kpc and more steeply declining profiles with radius than spheroids. We predict that the {\it eROSITA} 4-year all-sky survey should detect many of the signatures we predict here, although targeted follow-up observations of highly inclined nearby discs after the survey may be necessary to observe some of our azimuthally-dependent predictions., 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table. Determining the fraction of nearby dwarf galaxies hosting massive black holes (BHs) can inform our understanding of the origin of "seed" black holes at high redshift. Here we search for signatures of accreting massive BHs in a sample of dwarf galaxies ($M_\star \le 3 \times 10^9~M_\odot$, $z \leq 0.15$) selected from the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) using X-ray observations from the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS). On average, our search is sensitive to active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in dwarf galaxies that are accreting at $\gtrsim 1%$ of their Eddington luminosity. Of the ${\sim}28,000$ X-ray sources in eFEDS and the 495 dwarf galaxies in the NSA within the eFEDS footprint, we find six galaxies hosting possible active massive BHs. If the X-ray sources are indeed associated with the dwarf galaxies, the X-ray emission is above that expected from star formation, with X-ray source luminosities of $L_{0.5-8~\textrm{keV}} \sim 10^{39\textrm{-}40}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Additionally, after accounting for chance alignments of background AGNs with dwarf galaxies, we estimate there are between 0-9 real associations between dwarf galaxies and X-ray sources in the eFEDS field at the 95% confidence level. From this we find an upper limit on the eFEDS-detected dwarf galaxy AGN fraction of $\le 1.8%$, which is broadly consistent with similar studies at other wavelengths. We extrapolate these findings from the eFEDS sky coverage to the planned eROSITA All-Sky Survey and estimate that upon completion, the all-sky survey could yield as many as ${\sim}1350$ AGN candidates in dwarf galaxies at low redshift., 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Every 19 years, Saturn passes through Jupiter's 'flapping' magnetotail. Here, we report Chandra X-ray observations of Saturn planned to coincide with this rare planetary alignment and to analyse Saturn's magnetospheric response when transitioning to this unique parameter space. We analyse three Director's Discretionary Time (DDT) observations from the High Resolution Camera (HRC-I) on-board Chandra, taken on November 19, 21 and 23 2020 with the aim to find auroral and/or disk emissions. We infer the conditions in the kronian system by looking at coincident soft X-ray solar flux data from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of Saturn's ultraviolet (UV) auroral emissions. The large Saturn-Sun-Earth angle during this time would mean that most flares from the Earth-facing side of the Sun would not have impacted Saturn. We find no significant detection of Saturn's disk or auroral emissions in any of our observations. We calculate the 3$\sigma$ upper band energy flux of Saturn during this time to be 0.9 - 3.04 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ which agrees with fluxes found from previous modelled spectra of the disk emissions. We conclude by discussing the implications of this non-detection and how it is imperative that the next fleet of X-ray telescope (such as Athena and the Lynx mission concept) continue to observe Saturn with their improved spatial and spectral resolution and very enhanced sensitivity to help us finally solve the mysteries behind Saturn's apparently elusive X-ray aurora., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

To help understand and determine the driver of jovian auroral X-rays, we present the first statistical study to focus on the morphology and dynamics of the jovian northern hot spot (NHS) using Chandra data. The catalog we explore dates from December 18, 2000 up to and including September 8, 2019. Using a numerical criterion, we characterize the typical and extreme behavior of the concentrated NHS emissions across the catalog. The mean power of the NHS is found to be 1.91 GW with a maximum brightness of 2.02 Rayleighs (R), representing by far the brightest parts of the jovian X-ray spectrum. We report a statistically significant region of emissions at the NHS center which is always present, the averaged hot spot nucleus (AHSNuc), with mean power of 0.57 GW and inferred average brightness of (Formula presented.) 1.2 R. We use a flux equivalence mapping model to link this distinct region of X-ray output to a likely source location and find that the majority of mappable NHS photons emanate from the pre-dusk to pre-midnight sector, coincident with the dusk flank boundary. A smaller cluster maps to the noon magnetopause boundary, dominated by the AHSNuc, suggesting that there may be multiple drivers of X-ray emissions. On application of timing analysis techniques (Rayleigh, Monte Carlo, Jackknife), we identify several instances of statistically significant quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the NHS photons ranging from (Formula presented.) 2.3 to 36.4 min, suggesting possible links with ultra-low frequency activity on the magnetopause boundary (e.g., dayside reconnection, Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities).

X-ray spectral fitting of astronomical sources requires convolving the intrinsic spectrum or model with the instrumental response. Standard forward modeling techniques have proven success in recovering the underlying physical parameters in moderate to high signal-to-noise regimes; however, they struggle to achieve the same level of accuracy in low signal-to-noise regimes. Additionally, the use of machine learning techniques on X-ray spectra requires access to the intrinsic spectrum. Therefore, the measured spectrum must be effectively deconvolved from the instrumental response. In this note, we explore numerical methods for inverting the matrix equation describing X-ray spectral convolution. We present new deep, high-resolution, 1.5 GHz observations of the prototypical nearby Perseus galaxy cluster from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We isolate for the first time the complete tail of radio emission of the bent-jet radio galaxy NGC 1272, which had been previously mistaken to be part of the radio mini-halo. The possibility that diffuse radio galaxy emission contributes to mini-halo emission may be a general phenomenon in relaxed cool-core clusters, and should be explored. The collimated jets of NGC 1272 initially bend to the west, and then transition eastward into faint, 60 kpc-long extensions with eddy-like structures and filaments. We suggest interpretations for these structures that involve bulk motions of intracluster gas, the galaxy's orbit in the cluster including projection effects, and the passage of the galaxy through a sloshing cold front. Instabilities and turbulence created at the surface of this cold front and in the turbulent wake of the infalling host galaxy most likely play a role in the formation of the observed structures. Using Chandra observations, we derive the Y-X proxy and associated total mass measurement, M-500(YX), for 147 clusters with z < 0.35 from the Planck early Sunyaev-Zeldovich catalog, and for 80 clusters with z < 0.22 from an X-ray flux-limited sample. We reextract the Planck YSZ measurements and obtain the corresponding mass proxy, M-500(SZ), from the full Planck mission maps, minimizing Malmquist bias due to observational scatter. The masses reextracted using the more precise X-ray position and characteristic size agree with the published PSZ2 values, but yield a significant reduction in the scatter (by a factor of two) in the M-500(SZ) - M-500(YX) relation. The slope is 0.93 +/- 0.03, and the median ratio, M-500(SZ)/M-500(YX) = 0.91 +/- 0.01, is within the expectations from known X-ray calibration systematics. Y-SZ/Y-X is 0.88 +/- 0.02, in good agreement with predictions from cluster structure, and implying a low level of clumpiness. In agreement with the findings of the Planck Collaboration, the slope of the Y-SZ-D-A(-2) Y-X flux relation is significantly less than unity (0.89 +/- 0.01). Using extensive simulations, we show that this result is not due to selection effects, intrinsic scatter, or covariance between quantities. We demonstrate analytically that changing the Y-SZ-Y-X relation from apparent flux to intrinsic properties results in a best-fit slope that is closer to unity and increases the dispersion about the relation. The redistribution resulting from this transformation implies that the best-fit parameters of the M-500(SZ) - M-500(YX) relation will be sample- dependent.

We present joint Suzaku and Chandra observations of MKW4. With a global temperature of 1.6 keV, MKW4 is one of the smallest galaxy groups that have been mapped in X-rays out to the virial radius. We measure its gas properties from its center to the virial radius in the north, east, and northeast directions. Its entropy profile follows a power-law of $\propto r^{1.1}$ between R$_{500}$ and R$_{200}$ in all directions, as expected from the purely gravitational structure formation model. The well-behaved entropy profiles at the outskirts of MKW4 disfavor the presence of gas clumping or thermal non-equilibrium between ions and electrons in this system. We measure an enclosed baryon fraction of 11% at R$_{200}$, remarkably smaller than the cosmic baryon fraction of 15%. We note that the enclosed gas fractions at R$_{200}$ are systematically smaller for groups than for clusters from existing studies in the literature. The low baryon fraction of galaxy groups, such as MKW4, suggests that their shallower gravitational potential well may make them more vulnerable to baryon losses due to AGN feedback or galactic winds. We find that the azimuthal scatter of various gas properties at the outskirts of MKW4 is significantly lower than in other systems, suggesting that MKW4 is a spherically symmetric and highly relaxed system., 15 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Space-based X-ray detectors are subject to significant fluxes of charged particles in orbit, notably energetic cosmic ray protons, contributing a significant background. We develop novel machine learning algorithms to detect charged particle events in next-generation X-ray CCDs and DEPFET detectors, with initial studies focusing on the Athena Wide Field Imager (WFI) DEPFET detector. We train and test a prototype convolutional neural network algorithm and find that charged particle and X-ray events are identified with a high degree of accuracy, exploiting correlations between pixels to improve performance over existing event detection algorithms. 99 per cent of frames containing a cosmic ray are identified and the neural network is able to correctly identify up to 40 per cent of the cosmic rays that are missed by current event classification criteria, showing potential to significantly reduce the instrumental background, and unlock the full scientific potential of future X-ray missions such as Athena, Lynx and AXIS., Proceedings of the SPIE, Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation, Space Telescopes and Instrumentation 2020: Ultraviolet to Gamma Ray

Although observations of high-redshift quasars demonstrate that many supermassive black holes (BHs) reached large masses within one billion years after the Big Bang, the origin of the first BHs is still a mystery. A promising way to constrain the origin of the first BHs is to explore the average properties of z ≳ 6 BHs. However, typical BHs remain hidden from X-ray surveys, which is due to their relatively faint nature and the limited sensitivity of X-ray telescopes. Gravitational lensing provides an attractive way to study this unique galaxy population as it magnifies the faint light from these high-redshift galaxies. Here, we study the X-ray emission originating from 155 gravitationally lensed z ≳ 6 galaxies that were detected in the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey. We utilize Chandra X-ray observations to search for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the individual galaxies and in the stacked galaxy samples. We did not identify an individual X-ray source that was undoubtedly associated with a high-redshift galaxy. We stack the signal from all galaxies and do not find a statistically significant detection. We split our sample based on stellar mass, star formation rate, and lensing magnification and stack these subsamples. We obtain a 2.2σ detection for massive galaxies with an X-ray luminosity of (3.7 ± 1.6) × 1042 erg s−1, which corresponds to a (3.0 ± 1.3) × 105 M ⊙ BH accreting at its Eddington rate. Other stacks remain undetected and we place upper limits on the AGN emission. These limits imply that the bulk of BHs at z ≳ 6 either accrete at a few percent of their Eddington rate and/or are 1–2 orders of magnitude less massive than expected based on the stellar mass of their host galaxy.

Within the solar system, X-ray emissions have been detected from every planet except the Ice Giants: Uranus and Neptune. Here, we present three Chandra X-ray Observations of Uranus (each 24-30 ks duration): an Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) observation during solar maximum on 7 August 2002 and two High Resolution Camera (HRC) observations during solar minimum on 11 and 12 November 2017. The ACIS observation from 2002 shows a low signal but statistically significant detection of X-rays from Uranus. The measured Uranus X-ray fluxes of 10-15-10-16 erg/cm2/s from this detection are consistent with upper limits and modelling predictions in previous work (Ness & Schmidt. 2000; Cravens et al. 2006). The photon energy distribution from this observation is consistent with an X-ray emission from charge exchange or scattering of solar photons, as observed for Jupiter and Saturn. The two HRC observations from 2017 constitute non-detections. For 11 Nov 2017, the X-ray emission coincident with Uranus’ location is dimmer than 98% of the Field of View. 12 November 2017, was also a non-detection, but with tentative hints of planetary X-ray signatures: Uranus was 4 times brighter than the previous day, and brighter than 94% of the Field of View (1.6 standard deviations > Field of View mean). At this time, the Uranus coincident X-ray signature also exhibited timing variation distinct from the field of view. Further and longer observations will be required to better characterise the nature of the X-ray emissions from Uranus.

Jupiter’s unique x-ray aurora is driven by the same processes as Earth’s: Heavy ion scattering by electromagnetic waves., Jupiter’s rapidly rotating, strong magnetic field provides a natural laboratory that is key to understanding the dynamics of high-energy plasmas. Spectacular auroral x-ray flares are diagnostic of the most energetic processes governing magnetospheres but seemingly unique to Jupiter. Since their discovery 40 years ago, the processes that produce Jupiter’s x-ray flares have remained unknown. Here, we report simultaneous in situ satellite and space-based telescope observations that reveal the processes that produce Jupiter’s x-ray flares, showing surprising similarities to terrestrial ion aurora. Planetary-scale electromagnetic waves are observed to modulate electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves, periodically causing heavy ions to precipitate and produce Jupiter’s x-ray pulses. Our findings show that ion aurorae share common mechanisms across planetary systems, despite temporal, spatial, and energetic scales varying by orders of magnitude.

The origin of the diverse population of galaxy clusters remains an unexplained aspect of large-scale structure formation and cluster evolution. We present a novel method of using X-ray images to identify cool core (CC), weak cool core (WCC), and non cool core (NCC) clusters of galaxies, that are defined by their central cooling times. We employ a convolutional neural network, ResNet-18, which is commonly used for image analysis, to classify clusters. We produce mock Chandra X-ray observations for a sample of 318 massive clusters drawn from the IllustrisTNG simulations. The network is trained and tested with low resolution mock Chandra images covering a central 1 Mpc square for the clusters in our sample. Without any spectral information, the deep learning algorithm is able to identify CC, WCC, and NCC clusters, achieving balanced accuracies (BAcc) of 92%, 81%, and 83%, respectively. The performance is superior to classification by conventional methods using central gas densities, with an average BAcc = 81%, or surface brightness concentrations, giving BAcc = 73%. We use Class Activation Mapping to localize discriminative regions for the classification decision. From this analysis, we observe that the network has utilized regions from cluster centers out to r~300 kpc and r~500 kpc to identify CC and NCC clusters, respectively. We compare Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of Jupiter during 2007 with a rich multi-instrument data set including upstream in situ solar wind measurements from the New Horizons spacecraft, radio emissions from the Nancay Decametric Array and Wind/Waves, and ultraviolet (UV) observations from the Hubble Space Telescope. New Horizons data revealed two corotating interaction regions (CIRs) impacted Jupiter during these observations. Non-Io decametric bursts and UV emissions brightened together and varied in phase with the CIRs. We characterize three types of X-ray aurorae: hard X-ray bremsstrahlung main emission, pulsed/flared soft X-ray emissions, and a newly identified dim flickering (varying on short time scales, but quasi-continuously present) aurora. For most observations, the X-ray aurorae were dominated by pulsed/flaring emissions, with ion spectral lines that were best fit by iogenic plasma. However, the brightest X-ray aurora was coincident with a magnetosphere expansion. For this observation, the aurorae were produced by both flickering emission and erratic pulses/flares. Auroral spectral models for this observation required the addition of solar wind ions to attain good fits, suggesting solar wind entry into the outer magnetosphere or directly into the pole for this particularly bright observation. X-ray bremsstrahlung from high energy electrons was only bright for one observation, which was during a forward shock. This bremsstrahlung was spatially coincident with bright UV main emission (power > 1 TW) and X-ray ion spectral line dusk emission, suggesting closening of upward and downward current systems during the shock. Otherwise, the bremsstrahlung was dim, and UV main emission power was also lower (

The 2007-2009 solar minimum was the longest of the space age. We present the first of two companion papers on Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray campaigns of Jupiter through February-March 2007. We find that low solar X-ray flux during solar minimum causes Jupiter's equatorial regions to be exceptionally X-ray dim (0.21 GW at minimum; 0.76 GW at maximum). While the Jovian equatorial emission varies with solar cycle, the aurorae have comparably bright intervals at solar minimum and maximum. We apply atomic charge exchange models to auroral spectra and find that iogenic plasma of sulphur and oxygen ions provides excellent fits for XMM-Newton observations. The fitted spectral S:O ratios of 0.4-1.3 are in good agreement with in situ magnetospheric S:O measurements of 0.3-1.5, suggesting that the ions that produce Jupiter's X-ray aurora predominantly originate inside the magnetosphere. The aurorae were particularly bright on 24-25 February and 8-9 March, but these two observations exhibit very different spatial, spectral, and temporal behavior; 24-25 February was the only observation in this campaign with significant hard X-ray bremsstrahlung from precipitating electrons, suggesting this may be rare. For 8-9 March, a bremsstrahlung component was absent, but bright oxygen O(6+)lines and best-fit models containing carbon, point to contributions from solar wind ions. This contribution is absent in the other observations. Comparing simultaneous Chandra ACIS and XMM-Newton EPIC spectra showed that ACIS systematically underreported 0.45- to 0.6-keV Jovian emission, suggesting quenching may be less important for Jupiter's atmosphere than previously thought. We therefore recommend XMM-Newton for spectral analyses and quantifying opacity/quenching effects.

We simulate stacked observations of nearby hot X-ray coronae associated with galaxies in the EAGLE and Illustris-TNG hydrodynamic simulations. A forward modeling pipeline is developed to predict 4-year eROSITA observations and stacked image analysis, including the effects of instrumental and astrophysical backgrounds. We propose an experiment to stack z~0.01 galaxies separated by specific star-formation rate (sSFR) to examine how the hot (T>=10^6 K) circumgalactic medium (CGM) differs for high- and low-sSFR galaxies. The simulations indicate that the hot CGM of low-mass (M_*~10^{10.5} Msol), high-sSFR (defined as the top one-third ranked by sSFR) central galaxies will be detectable to a galactocentric radius r~30-50 kpc. Both simulations predict lower luminosities at fixed stellar mass for the low-sSFR galaxies (the lower third of sSFR) with Illustris-TNG predicting 3x brighter coronae around high-sSFR galaxies than EAGLE. Both simulations predict detectable emission out to r~150-200 kpc for stacks centered on high-mass (M_*~10^{11.0} Msol) galaxies, with EAGLE predicting brighter X-ray halos. The extended soft X-ray luminosity correlates strongly and positively with the mass of circumgalactic gas within the virial radius (f_{CGM}). Prior analyses of both simulations have established that f_{CGM} is reduced by expulsive feedback driven mainly by black hole growth, which quenches galaxy growth by inhibiting replenishment of the ISM. Both simulations predict that eROSITA stacks should not only conclusively detect and resolve the hot CGM around L^* galaxies for the first time, but provide a powerful probe of how the baryon cycle operates, for which there remains an absence of consensus between state-of-the-art simulations., 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, Accepted ApJL

Jupiter's auroral X-rays have been observed for 40 years with an unknown driver producing quasiperiodic emission, concentrated into auroral hot spots. In this study we analyze an (Formula presented.) 10-hr Chandra observation from 18:56 on 18 June 2017. We use a new Python pipeline to analyze the auroral morphology, perform timing analysis by incorporating Rayleigh testing, and use in situ Juno observations to infer the magnetosphere that was compressed during the Chandra interval. During this time Juno was near its apojove position of (Formula presented.) 112 (Formula presented.), on the dawn flank of the magnetosphere near the nominal magnetopause position. We present new dynamical polar plots showing an extended X-ray hot spot in the northern auroral region traversing across the Jovian disk. From this morphology, we propose setting a numerical threshold of (Formula presented.) 7 photons per 5° System III longitude (Formula presented.) 5° latitude to define a photon concentration of the northern hot spot region. Our timing analysis finds two significant quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) of (Formula presented.) 37 and (Formula presented.) 26 min within the extended northern hot spot. No statistically significant QPOs were found in the southern X-ray auroral emission. The Rayleigh test is combined with Monte Carlo simulation to find the statistical significance of any QPOs found. We use a flux equivalence mapping model to trace the possible origin of the QPOs, and thus the driver, to the dayside magnetopause boundary.

The particle-induced background of X-ray observatories is produced by Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) primary protons, electrons, and He ions. Events due to direct interaction with the detector are usually removed by on board processing. The interactions of these primary particles with the detector environment produce secondary particles that mimic X-ray events from celestial sources and are much more difficult to identify. The filter wheel closed data from the XMM-Newton EPIC-pn camera in small window mode (SWM) contains both the X-ray-like background events and the events due to direct interactions with the primary particles. From this data we demonstrate that X-ray-like background events are spatially correlated with the primary particle interaction. This result can be used to further characterise and reduce the non-X-ray background in silicon-based X-ray detectors in current and future missions. We also show that spectrum and pattern fractions of secondary particle events are different from those produced by cosmic X-rays., 18 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. Accepted for publication in ApJ

The powerful FR II radio galaxy Cygnus A exhibits primary and secondary hotspots in each lobe. A 2 Msec Chandra X-ray image of Cygnus A has revealed an approximately circular hole, with a radius of 3.9 kpc, centered on the primary hotspot in the eastern radio lobe, hotspot E. We infer the distribution of X-ray emission on our line-of-sight from an X-ray surface brightness profile of the radio lobe adjacent to the hole and use it to argue that the hole is excavated from the radio lobe. The surface brightness profile of the hole implies a depth at least 1.7 $\pm$ 0.3 times greater than its projected width, requiring a minimum depth of 13.3 $\pm$ 2.3 kpc. A similar hole observed in the 5 GHz VLA radio map reinforces the argument for a cavity lying within the lobe. We argue that the jet encounters the shock compressed intracluster medium at hotspot E, passing through one or more shocks as it is deflected back into the radio lobe. The orientation of Cygnus A allows the outflow from hotspot E to travel almost directly away from us, creating an elongated cavity, as observed. These results favor models for multiple hotspots in which an FR II jet is deflected at a primary hotspot, then travels onward to deposit the bulk of its power at a secondary hotspot, rather than the dentist drill model., Accepted to ApJ, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables

We report the scaling relations derived by fitting the X-ray parameters determined from analyzing the XMM-Newton observations of 120 galaxy clusters in the Planck Early Sunyaev-Zel'dovich sample spanning the redshift range of 0.059$$3$\sigma$) of the $M_{tot}$-$T$ relation, pointing to an increase of the kinetic-to-thermal energy ratio with redshift. Massive merging galaxy clusters often host diffuse Mpc-scale radio synchrotron emission. This emission originates from relativistic electrons in the ionized intracluster medium (ICM). An important question is how these synchrotron emitting relativistic electrons are accelerated. Our aim is to search for diffuse emission in the Frontier Fields clusters Abell S1063 and Abell 370 and characterize its properties. While these clusters are very massive and well studied at some other wavelengths, no diffuse emission has been reported for these clusters so far. We obtained 325 MHz Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and 1--4 GHz Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of Abell S1063 and Abell 370. We complement these data with Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations. In our sensitive images, we discover radio halos in both clusters. In Abell S1063, a giant radio halo is found with a size of $\sim 1.2$ Mpc. The integrated spectral index between 325 MHz and 1.5 GHz is $-0.94\pm0.08$ and it steepens to $-1.77 \pm 0.20$ between 1.5 and 3.0 GHz. This spectral steepening provides support for the turbulent re-acceleration model for radio halo formation. Abell 370 hosts a faint radio halo mostly centred on the southern part of this binary merging cluster, with a size of $\sim 500-700$ kpc. The spectral index between 325 MHz and 1.5 GHz is $-1.10\pm0.09$. Both radio halos follow the known scaling relation between the cluster mass proxy $Y_{500}$ and radio power, consistent with the idea that they are related to ongoing cluster merger events., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables; resubmitted to A&A after incorporating reviewer's comments

We present deep Chandra observations of A3411-12, a remarkable merging cluster that hosts the most compelling evidence for electron re-acceleration at cluster shocks to date. Using the $Y_X-M$ scaling relation, we find $r_{500} \sim 1.3$ Mpc, $M_{500} = (7.1 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{14} \ M_{\rm{\odot}}$, $kT=6.5\pm 0.1$ keV, and a gas mass of $M_{\rm g,500} = (9.7 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{13} M_\odot$. The gas mass fraction within $r_{500}$ is $f_{\rm g} = 0.14 \pm 0.01$. We compute the shock strength using density jumps to conclude that the Mach number of the merging subcluster is small ($M \leq 1.15_{-0.09}^{+0.14}$). We also present pseudo-density, projected temperature, pseudo-pressure, and pseudo-entropy maps. Based on the pseudo-entropy map we conclude that the cluster is undergoing a mild merger, consistent with the small Mach number. On the other hand, radio relics extend over Mpc scale in the A3411-12 system, which strongly suggests that a population of energetic electrons already existed over extended regions of the cluster., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables. M87, in the Virgo cluster, allows us to study the interaction of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) with its hot gaseous atmosphere. Deep Chandra observations reveal a nearly circular shock front with a Mach number of 1.2 and a radius of 13 kpc which is driven by a central cavity inflated by an SMBH outburst began 12 million years ago. An outburst with an energy of a ~5×57 ergs and a duration of ~2 Myrs provides a good match to all the constraints. For an outburst repetition rate of about 12 Myrs (the outburst age), the outburst energy is sufficient to balance the radiative cooling of the gas. The outburst duration in M87 argues for a “gentle” (long duration) outburst that does not generate strong shocks and where much of the outburst energy is deposited in the cavities that then transfer energy to the surrounding gas as they buoyantly rise.

Auroral hot spots are observed across the Universe at different scales 1 and mark the coupling between a surrounding plasma environment and an atmosphere. Within our own Solar System, Jupiter possesses the only resolvable example of this large-scale energy transfer. Jupiter’s northern X-ray aurora is concentrated into a hot spot, which is located at the most poleward regions of the planet’s aurora and pulses either periodically 2,3 or irregularly 4,5 . X-ray emission line spectra demonstrate that Jupiter’s northern hot spot is produced by high charge-state oxygen, sulfur and/or carbon ions with an energy o f tens of MeV (refs 4–6 ) that are undergoing charge exchange. Observations instead failed to reveal a similar feature in the south 2,3,7,8 . Here, we report the existence of a persistent southern X-ray hot spot. Surprisingly, this large-scale southern auroral structure behaves independently of its northern counterpart. Using XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray campaigns, performed in May–June 2016 and March 2007, we show that Jupiter’s northern and southern spots each exhibit different characteristics, such as different periodic pulsations and uncorrelated changes in brightness. These observations imply that highly energetic, non-conjugate magnetospheric processes sometimes drive the polar regions of Jupiter’s dayside magnetosphere. This is in contrast to current models of X-ray generation for Jupiter 9,10 . Understanding the behaviour and drivers of Jupiter’s pair of hot spots is critical to the use of X-rays as diagnostics of the wide range of rapidly rotating celestial bodies that exhibit these auroral phenomena. The authors discover that Jupiter's southern X-ray aurora is concentrated into a hot spot (until now only the north pole was known to have one), which behaves completely differently in brightness and timing pulsation from its northern counterpart.

The first detected exoplanets found were "hot Jupiters"; these are large Jupiter-like planets in close orbits with their host star. The stars in these so-called "hot Jupiter systems" can have significant X-ray emission and the X-ray flux likely changes the evolution of the overall star-planetary system in at least two ways: (1) the intense high energy flux alters the structure of the upper atmosphere of the planet - in some cases leading to significant mass loss; (2) the angular momentum and magnetic field of the planet induces even more activity on the star, enhancing its X-rays, which are then subsequently absorbed by the planet. If the alignment of the systems is appropriate, the planet will transit the host star. The resulting drop in flux from the star allows us to measure the distribution of the low-density planetary atmosphere. We describe a science mission concept for a SmallSat Exosphere Explorer of hot Jupiters (SEEJ; pronounced "siege"). SEEJ will monitor the X-ray emission of nearby X-ray bright stars with transiting hot Jupiters in order to measure the lowest density portion of exoplanet atmospheres and the coronae of the exoplanet hosts. SEEJ will use revolutionary Miniature X-ray Optics (MiXO) and CMOS X-ray detectors to obtain sufficient collecting area and high sensitivity in a low mass, small volume and low-cost package. SEEJ will observe scores of transits occurring on select systems to make detailed measurements of the transit depth and shape which can be compared to out-of-transit behavior of the target system. The depth and duration of the flux change will allow us to characterize the exospheres of multiple hot Jupiters in a single year. In addition, the long baselines (covering multiple stellar rotation periods) from the transit data will allow us to characterize the temperature, flux and flare rates of the exoplanet hosts at an unprecedented level. This, in turn, will provide valuable constraints for models of atmospheric loss. In this contribution we outline the science of SEEJ and focus on the enabling technologies Miniature X-ray Optics and CMOS X-ray detectors.

Galaxy-wide outflows driven by star formation and/or an active galactic nucleus (AGN) are thought to play a crucial rule in the evolution of galaxies and the metal enrichment of the inter-galactic medium. Direct measurements of these processes are still scarce and new observations are needed to reveal the nature of outflows in the majority of the galaxy population. Aims. We combine extensive, spatially-resolved, multi-wavelength observations, taken as part of the Close AGN Reference Survey (CARS), for the edge-on disc galaxy HE 1353-1917 in order to characterise the impact of the AGN on its host galaxy via outflows and radiation. Methods. Multi-color broad-band photometry was combined with spatially-resolved optical, near-infrared (NIR) and sub-mm and radio observations taken with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopy Explorer (MUSE), the Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS), the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to map the physical properties and kinematics of the multi-phase interstellar medium. Results. We detect a biconical extended narrow-line region ionised by the luminous AGN orientated nearly parallel to the galaxy disc, extending out to at least 25 kpc. The extra-planar gas originates from galactic fountains initiated by star formation processes in the disc, rather than an AGN outflow, as shown by the kinematics and the metallicity of the gas. Nevertheless, a fast, multi-phase, AGN-driven outflow with speeds up to 1000 km s(-1) is detected close to the nucleus at 1 kpc distance. A radio jet, in connection with the AGN radiation field, is likely responsible for driving the outflow as confirmed by the energetics and the spatial alignment of the jet and multi-phase outflow. Evidence for negative AGN feedback suppressing the star formation rate (SFR) is mild and restricted to the central kpc. But while any SFR suppression must have happened recently, the outflow has the potential to greatly impact the future evolution of the galaxy disc due to its geometrical orientation. Conclusions.. Our observations reveal that low-power radio jets can play a major role in driving fast, multi-phase, galaxy-scale outflows even in radio-quiet AGN. Since the outflow energetics for HE 1353-1917 are consistent with literature, scaling relation of AGN-driven outflows the contribution of radio jets as the driving mechanisms still needs to be systematically explored.© B.
