Spaceborne lidar provides a unique opportunity to supplement the field plot measurements of national forest inventories (NFIs) by providing dense measurements of vertical canopy structure. For full waveform instruments such as the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), measurements take the form of reflected energy as a function of height within an observed footprint. Many forest attributes cannot be directly computed from the waveforms, and thus statistical models relating the measurements to target attributes must be trained using field plot data. Because the discrete footprint samples produced by spaceborne lidar instruments have little chance of collocation with pre-existing field plots, model calibration remains a primary challenge. We leveraged the density and spatial correlation of GEDI observations to make predictions of the cumulative waveform over 326,787 NFI plots distributed across the contiguous United States. The predictions yield probability distributions, giving not only a predicted waveform but quantification of prediction uncertainty. The product of this work is a data set comprised of the NFI plots paired with the predictive waveform distributions. The predicted waveforms and their uncertainties can be used to train models with “error-in-variables” techniques that account for and filter the uncertainty in the predicted waveforms. This data set and the corresponding techniques allow statistically rigorous model training without requirements of collocation, yielding downstream forest attribute predictions that are consistent with NFI measurements and estimates. We demonstrate the data set by training a model for forest above ground biomass density (AGBD) and then use the model to produce a spatially complete 1 km map of AGBD for the contiguous United States. We further compare our AGBD predictions to US NFI estimates at a 64,000 hectare scale, showing the increase in precision to be proportional to the collection of almost 500,000 additional NFI plots across forested regions of CONUS.

Old-growth forests have been widely studied for decades. The extreme diversity of old forest characteristics has inspired an equally diverse set of old-growth definitions, and makes mapping old-growth difficult across large areas and different forest types. While the use of remote sensing in old-growth research is not new, there is a growing need for large scale mapping to improve understanding of old forest processes and to support old-growth conservation. Old-growth mapping requires definitions that are ecologically relevant to old forests while also transferable to remote sensing data. In this paper we develop a conceptual framework to evaluate three dimensions of old-growth—a temporal dimension related to tree ages, a physical dimension related to tree sizes, and a functional dimension related to forest processes. In the first part of our analysis, we classify forests throughout the eastern US as old or not with respect to each old-growth dimension using existing old-growth definitions and data from the US Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. We estimate the proportion of forest classified as old within a hexagon grid, resulting in a unique map of old forest proportion (OFP) for each dimension. Subsequently, we use spaceborne lidar data from NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) to reproduce each OFP map in a modeling framework designed to 1) assess the extent to which each dimension of forest oldness can be mapped at large spatial scales, and 2) identify biophysical GEDI variables related to each dimension of forest oldness. We estimate that only 2% of forest classified as old in any dimension satisfied the old criteria in all three dimensions. We found substantial spatial variation in the mapped OFP estimates across the three dimensions, highlighting how definition criteria impacts old-growth maps. We also found that physically old forests were more effectively mapped using GEDI data than functionally or temporally old forests, and that physically old forests were more structurally similar to one another than temporally or functionally old forests. Our modeling results indicate that while remote sensing may be best suited to mapping physical old-growth characteristics, definitions that rely solely on physical characteristics do not adequately represent old forests throughout the eastern US. We propose that future efforts to map old-growth with spaceborne remote sensing data may maximize utility through collaboration between western and indigenous old-growth experts to determine broad yet nuanced approaches that are appropriately tailored to the target variable of old forests. These efforts should balance explicit and ecologically relevant old-growth definitions specifically for mapping that can be linked to remotely sensed data, 2) appropriate spatial resolutions, and 3) flexible quantitative frameworks that encompass the complexities and heterogeneity of old forests.

The present study addresses the development, implementation, and validation of a forest height mapping scheme based on the combination of TanDEM-X interferometric coherence and GEDI waveform measurements. The very general case where only a single polarisation TanDEM-X interferogram, a set of spatially discrete GEDI waveform measurements, and no DTM are available is assumed. The use of GEDI waveforms to invert the TanDEM-X interferometric measurements is described together with a set of performance criteria implemented to ensure a certain performance quality. The emphasis is set on developing a methodology able to invert forest height at large scales. Combining 595 TanDEM-X scenes and about 15 million GEDI waveforms, a spatially continuous 25-m resolution forest height map covering the whole of Tasmania Island is achieved. The derived forest height map is validated against an airborne lidar-derived canopy height map available across the whole island.

Long-term trends in photosynthetic capacity measured with the satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are usually associated with climate change. Human impacts on the global land surface are typically not accounted for. Here, we provide the first global analysis quantifying the effect of the earth’s human footprint on NDVI trends. Globally, more than 20% of the variability in NDVI trends was explained by anthropogenic factors such as land use, nitrogen fertilization, and irrigation. Intensely used land classes, such as villages, showed the greatest rates of increase in NDVI, more than twice than those of forests. These findings reveal that factors beyond climate influence global long-term trends in NDVI and suggest that global climate change models and analyses of primary productivity should incorporate land use effects.

Members of the U.S. Climate Alliance, a coalition of 24 states committed to achieving the emissions reductions outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement, are considering policy options for inclusion of forest carbon in climate mitigation plans. These initiatives are generally limited by a lack of relevant data on forest carbon stocks and fluxes past-to-future. Previously, we developed a new forest carbon modeling system that combined high-resolution remote sensing, field data, and ecological modeling to estimate contemporary above-ground forest carbon stocks, and projected future forest carbon sequestration potential for the state of Maryland. Here we extended this work to provide a consistent geospatial approach for monitoring changes in forest carbon stocks over time. Utilizing the same data and modeling system developed previously for planning, we integrated historical input data on weather and disturbance to reconstruct the history of vegetation dynamics and forest above-ground carbon stocks annually over the period 1984–2016 at 30 m resolution and provided an extension to 2023. Statewide, forested land had an average annual net above ground carbon sink of 1.37 TgC yr ^−1 , comparable to prior estimates. However, unlike the prior estimates, there was considerable variation around this mean. The statewide net above ground flux ranged interannually from −0.65 to 2.77 Tg C yr ^−1 . At the county scale, the average annual net above ground flux ranged spatially from 0.01 to 0.13 Tg C yr ^−1 and spatiotemporally from −0.43 to 0.24 Tg C yr ^−1 . Attribution analyses indicate the primary importance of persistent and regrowing forests, vegetation structure, local disturbance, and rising CO _2 to the mean flux, and the primary importance of weather to the large-scale interannual variability. These results have important implications for state climate mitigation planning, reporting and assessment. With this approach, it is now possible to monitor changes in forest carbon stocks spatiotemporally over policy relevant domains with a consistent framework that is also enabled for future planning.

The area of tropical secondary forests is increasing rapidly, but data on the physical and biological structure of the canopies of these forests are limited. To obtain such data and to measure the ontogeny of canopy structure during tropical rainforest succession, we studied patch-scale (5 m2) canopy structure in three areas of 18-36 year-old secondary forest in Costa Rica, and compared the results to data from old-growth forest at the same site. All stands were sampled with a stratified random design with complete harvest from ground level to the top of the canopy from a modular portable tower. All canopies were organized into distinct high- and low-leaf-density layers (strata), and multiple strata developed quickly with increasing patch height. The relation of total Leaf Area Index (LAI, leaf area per area of ground) to patch canopy height, the existence of distinct high and low leaf- density layers (strata and free air spaces), the depth and LAI of the canopy strata and free air spaces, and the relation of the number of strata to patch canopy height were remarkably constant across the entire successional gradient. Trees were the most important contributor to LAI at all stages, while contribution of palm LAI increased through succession. We hypothesize that canopy physical structure at the patch scale is driven by light competition and discuss how this hypothesis could be tested. That canopy physical structure was relatively independent of the identity of the species present suggests that canopy physical structure may be conserved even as canopy floristics shift due to changing climate.

Afforestation and reforestation have the potential to provide effective climate mitigation through forest carbon sequestration. Strategic reforestation activities, which account for both carbon sequestration potential (CSP) and economic opportunity, can provide attractive options for policymakers who must manage competing social and environmental goals. In particular, forest carbon pricing can incentivize reforestation on private land, but this may require landholders to forego other profits. Here, we utilize an ambitious geospatial approach to quantify economic opportunities for reforestation in the state of Maryland (USA) based on high-resolution remoting sensing, ecosystem modeling, and economic analysis. Our results identify spatially-explicit areas of economic opportunity where the potential revenue from forest carbon outcompetes the expected profit of existing cropland at the hectare scale. Specifically, we find that under a baseline economic scenario of $20 per ton of carbon (5% rental rate) and decadal average crop profitability, a transition to forest on agricultural land would be more profitable than 23.2% of cropland in Maryland under a 20 year land-use commitment. Accounting for variations in carbon and crop pricing, 5.5%–55.4% of cropland would be immediately outcompeted by expected forest carbon revenue, with the potential for an additional 0.5%–10.6% of outcompeted cropland within 20 years. Under the baseline economic scenario, an annual allocation of $5.8 million towards a carbon rental program could protect 6.93 Tg C (3.4% of the state’s total remaining CSP) on reforested croplands. This moderate yearly cost is equal to 9.7% of Maryland’s average annual auction proceeds from participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (between 2014 and 2018), and 19.3% of the average annual subsidy payments for corn, soy, and wheat allocated over the same period. This methodological approach may be useful for state governments, not-for-profit organizations, or regional climate initiatives interested in identifying strategic areas for reforestation.

Plant biodiversity supports life on Earth and provides a range of important ecosystem services, but is under severe pressure by global change. Structural diversity plays a crucial role for carbon, water and energy cycles and animal habitats. However, it is very difficult to map and monitor over large areas, limiting our ability to assess the status of biodiversity and predict change. NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) provides a new opportunity to measure 3D plant canopy structure of the world’s temperate, Mediterranean and tropical ecosystems, but its potential to map structural diversity is not yet tested. Here, we use wall-to-wall airborne laser scanning (ALS) to simulate GEDI data (GEDI _sim ) over 7380 km ^2 in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains in California and evaluate how well GEDI’s sampling scheme captures patterns of structural diversity. We evaluate functional richness and functional beta diversity in a biodiversity hot spot. GEDI _sim performed well for trait retrievals (r ^2 = 0.68) and functional richness mapping (r ^2 = 0.75) compared to ALS retrievals, despite lower correlations in complex terrain with steep slopes. Functional richness patterns were strongly associated with soil organic carbon stocks and density as well as variables related to water availability and could be appropriately mapped by GEDI _sim with and without cloud cover. Functional beta diversity was more strongly related to local changes in topography and more challenging to map, especially with decreasing sampling density. The reduced number of GEDI _sim shots when simulating cloud cover lead to a strong overestimation of beta diversity and a reduction of r ^2 from 0.64 to 0.40 compared to ALS. The ability to map functional richness has been demonstrated with potential application at continental scales that could be transformative for our understanding of large-scale patterns of plant canopy structure, diversity and potential links to animal diversity, movement and habitats.
