This research attempted to explore the types of taboo expressions in the MLBB game chat and ascertain the reaction to the taboo words adopted in the MLBB game chat. The Qualitative Content Analysis Method was applied in this study. The researcher interviewed three MLBB game players and took screenshots of their in-game chat comments in order to gather the data. The results demonstrate that while not all MLBB players adopt the types of taboo language, there was one player who exclusively utilized it. The category with the greatest data is vulgar terms, with 32 words or 40% of the total; the second category is epithets and obscenity, with 22 words or 27.5% of the total; and the third category is profanity, with just 4 words or 5% of the total. Factors that contribute to players employing taboo words in MLBB games include their desire to draw attention, insult teammates or enemies, and provoke opponents to make the game exciting. Upon insulting and provoking their opponents, players feel relieved and pleased because their emotions were let out in the game. Subsequently, the findings have significant ramifications for enhancing learners' awareness of taboo language and contributing to the advancement of linguistic disciplines.

Experience, Generalization, Reinforcement, Application (EGRA) technique is suitable for teaching writing. Teaching writing using EGRA techniques executes the students are easier to develop stories based on their experiences. This study focused on investigating the implementation of the EGRA technique in understanding recount text by the students at SMPIT Al-Hijrah 2 Deli Serdang. Specifically, the objective of this study is to find out the effect of the EGRA technique on students' writing ability in recount text. This study employs a quasi-experimental design, including a pre-test and post-test control group design—the Eighth-grade students at SMPIT Al-Hijrah 2 Deli Serdang as the population of the study. The researchers selected two classes of Eighth-grade students as the sample of this study. The sample selection used random cluster sampling, specifically the Eight-grade Al-Karim as the experimental class, which consisted of 30 students, and the Eighth-grade VIII Al-Mughni as the control class, which consisted of 30 students. The experimental class was taught using the EGRA technique, and the control class was taught using the conventional method. The data of this study were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result from calculating the data showed that the implementation of EGRA was effective to be applied in teaching students of the Eighth-grade students at SMPIT Al-Hijrah 2 Deli Serdang in writing recount text. In other words, it was revealed that the use of EGRA technique was effective enough to enhance the students' understanding in writing recount text. While the application of the conventional method was not effective in improving students' ability to understand recount text.Keywords: Writing, EGRA Technique, Understanding a Recount text

New technology advancements have frequently been credited as holding the potential to cause significant contributions to education. This study contributes to high-quality learning by putting students in real-world e-learning situations while still allowing them to use scientific techniques to complete their project assignments. The subjects of this study were 80 first-year undergraduate students enrolled in the Bahasa Inggris (English) course. The snowball method questionnaire was obtained, and questionnaires were distributed to the students’ WhatsApp groups by performing snowball operational. The Lectures combined virtual face-to-face video conferencing applications on e-learning. Kahoot is an add-on application used. In general, online learning has a positive effect on students’ learning success. However, there are still learning obstacles in academic performance in online learning. On the other hand, learning obstacles occur because of students' limitations in developing themselves or their mental readiness to learn. As a result, digital learning may blend real issues with theoretical concepts in the classroom without neglecting the learning objectives that have been set for student engagement.

Textbooks are one of the main components in teaching learning activities. It is very important that textbooks should be adjusted to the children’s cognitive development at specific age. Semiotics is one of the aspects that can be evaluated in a textbook because the illustration of semiotics is very specific element that has great influence on children’s visual perception. Specifically, the aim of this study is to analyze Semiotics on the students’ English textbook in Elementary school. This study investigated the meaning of semiotics on students’ English textbook in the second grade Elementary school and how semiotics realized on students’ English textbook in the second grade Elementary School. This study applied qualitative research in terms of library research to collect the data from the students’ English textbook in the second grade Elementary school. Meanwhile, the data were analyzed by applying semiotic analysis based on the Pierce’s semiotic theory namely representaman (signifier), object (referent) and interpretan (signified). The results of this study indicated that this book is very suitable for learning for the second grade students of Elementary school at SDIT Al-Hijrah 2 because the exercises contain symbols, pictures and signs that are very interesting for the second grade students of Elementary school who have high imagination. The researchers had analyzed the main pictures related to the theme of the material in the exercises. In addition, the relationship between the pictures of the exercises and the meaning is interconnected each other.

English is one of compulsory subjects that must be learned by students of elementary school to collage level. In fact, some students have difficulty in learning English. This study aims to describe the factors affect students’ difficulties in learning English. The subjects of the study were 30 students of the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education Study Program at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. This study applied a qualitative descriptive research with a questionnaire and observation instruments. The data analysis of this study used interview, observation, documentation and triangulation. The researchers found that there are two difficulties factors in learning English particularly internal factors and external factors, including 1) students’ low motivation; 2) lack of understanding of the importance in learning English (3) lack of opportunities to learn English (4) Lack of environment supports such as parents, friends, etc.Keywords: Learning difficulties, factors of difficulties in learning English

Three years old children acquire language after their first language and it is influenced by two factors, namely physiological factors and psychological factors. Physiological factors include speech-producing organs such as mouth and brain function. Meanwhile, psychological factors include development cognitive of a child in the process of mastering his or her first language. This study was conducted to analyze the semantic analysis of language acquisition in 3 years old child. Specifically, it discussed about the errors of phonemes which were spoken by three years old child so that it can influence the meaning of the words semantically. The results obtained indicated that language acquisition of child aged 3 years old was still in the process of development language that will become perfect as them get older. There are 14 words that were not appropriate semantically. Those words were often spoken by the child. The relation between semantics and language acquisition of 3 years old child were assessed still in the development stage according to her age. This study deals with cross-culture of people who live in Indonesia and western. Especially, the national culture of Indonesia that is going to compare with western culture. People know that every country has its own culture, the eastern and western countries have their way of going live . The aim of this study is to compare the culture of Indonesia and western people in their daily live. This study used descriptive qualitative method. This study analysed the utterances, actions and the way of life Indonesia and western people. The result, there are many significant different ways of life, utterance, and action that actually allowed in Indonesia but forbidden in western people.

Newspaper is one kind of mass media that plays a very important role in organizing public opinion. The aim of this study is to analyze the use of parts of speech appeared on headlines of The Jakarta Post Newspaper. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this study and collected the data from the words on headlines The Jakarta Post Newspaper on November 23 rd , 2019 which contain parts of speech. Based on the data result, The Jakarta Post has 11 news headlines. Total words count is 71. Noun, Verbs and Prepositions were frequently used as compared to other parts of speech. Nouns consist of 43 words, Verbs consists of 12 words, Prepositions consist of 10 words, adverbs consist of 3 words, adjectives consist of 2 words, conjunction consists of 1 word and there were no pronoun and interjection found in the headlines of The Jakarta Post newspaper.

Morphological analysis is the main areas in studying vocabulary. Morphological analysis itself is analysis that is breaking a word into its elements (root, prefix and suffix). This study was conducted to analyze the use of derivational and inflectional morphemes in the song lyric “A thousand years” by Christina Perri. This study applied descriptive qualitative research which researchers found out the derivational and inflectional suffixes from the words in “A thousand years” lyric. The results of analyzing data were found in this study are derivational morphemes –ly consist of 2 words and inflectional morphemes –s plural, -s third singular person present tense, -ed past tense, -ing progressive and –er comparative consist of 57 words.

Dosen dan mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris notabenenya harus menggunakan bahasa Inggris didalam proses kegiatan yang berhubungan dengan Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Faktanya, terbatasnya penggunaan bahasa Inggris membuat mahasiswa sering menggunakan code switching dalam kegiatan yang berhubungan dengan Program Studi Pendidikan bahasa Inggris. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fenomena code switching yang terjadi didalam proses seminar proposal Prodi Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Budidaya Binjai. Penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini mengambil data dari proses seminar proposal Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris yang mana dosen penguji dan mahasiswa peserta seminar sebagai subjek penelitian dan data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara, rekaman dengan menggunakan rekaman video dan catatan lapangan. Dari hasil temuan disimpulkan bahwa code switching terjadi dalam tuturan selama proses seminar proposal prodi Bahasa Inggris. Jenis code switching yang terdapat dalam tuturan berdasarkan teori Romaine (2000) yaitu Inter-sentential code switching , Intra-sentential code switching dan Tag switching . Faktor dosen dan mahasiswa melakukan code switching adalah karena perubahan situasi karena hadirnya orang ketiga, perubahan situasi dari formal ke informal atau sebaliknya, dan berubahnya topik pembicaraan. Dari hasil interview juga disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa melakukan code switching karena bahasa Inggris bukan bahasa pertama mereka sehingga kurangnya kosakata bahasa Inggris membuat mereka sering menggunakan code switching didalam percakapannya. Indonesia recognizes that Bahasa as a national language which has function as unity language for its society. In fact, the tendency of society especially millennial generation used slang in daily conversation is higher than used Bahasa itself. This study aims to analyse the phenomenon of slang words used by millennial generation in Instagram. The scope of this study is to investigate types of slang used by millennial generation in Instagram, how the meaning of slang words used by millennial generation in Instagram and why millennial generation used slang words in Instagram. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this study and obtained the data from the discourse of 30 millennial generations in Instagram. The data was obtained from observation, interview and documentation. The result of the data showed that millennial generation used slang words in their communication in Instagram namely there were 31 slang words found in their caption in Instagram. These words contained five types of slang; fresh and creative; flippant; imitative; acronym; and clipping. The millennial generation used slang in Instagram because some reasons such as to address, to initiate relax conversation, to humiliate, to express impression and to show intimacy. Language Acquisition (pemerolehan bahasa) pada manusia diawali dari anak-anak ketika belajar berbicara. Anak-anak yang mulai bisa mengucapkan bahasa seperti bahasa orang dewasa adalah anak pada periode lingusitik yaitu periode perkembangan bahasa anak usia 1 – 5 tahun. Secara khusus tujuan penelitian ini untuk menggambarkan language acquisition pada anak periode linguistik. Subjek penelitian adalah anak usia 3 tahun dan 5 tahun. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian mengacu kepada teori Miles and Huberman yaitu deskriptif kualitatif (qualitative descriptive research). Rencana kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam penelitian antara lain: (1) mengambil data pemerolehan bahasa dari anak periode lingusitik; (2) memperoleh data melalui proses observasi, interview dan dokumentasi; (3) mengolah dan menganalisis data berdasarkan teori perkembangan anak tentang tahap pemerolehan bahasa anak periode linguistik faktor yang mempengaruhi pemerolehan bahasa. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, diketahui bahwa anak pada usia 3 tahun dan 5 tahun mengalami tahap perkembangan bahasa yaitu tahap tuturan dua kata, infleksi kata, kalimat tanya dan ingkar dan tahap konstruksi yang jarang dan kompleks. Faktor yang mempengaruhi pemerolehan bahasa anak usia 3 tahun dan 5 tahun adalah faktor keturunan meliputi faktor intelegensi dan kepribadian dan faktor latar belakang sosial mencakup hubungan keluarga, status sosial dan lingkungan sekitar.

Nowadays, universal language which is used in the world is English. The ability of speaking English is being a prerequisite to be someone’s success in the future. The aim of this study is to find the phenomenon of code switching in bilingual classroom which focused on types of grammatical code switching and reasons of using grammatical code switching. This research applied descriptive qualitative research which obtained the data from the discourse of lecturers and students in bilingual classroom at Universitas Negeri Medan. The researchers applied observation, interview and documentation. The data showed that lecturers and students used grammatical code switching in the classroom such as 2 tag code switching, 12 inter-sentential code switching, 22 intra-sentential code switching, 3 proper nouns, 1 negative words, 8 similarity of words in languages and 3 discourse marker. There are some reasons why the participants used code switching in their discourse. First, code switching made students more understand what the lecturers explained because not all bilingual students are able to speak English. Second, they used code switching because lack of vocabulary in English and so that they switched languages to make the material were easier to be understood.Keywords— Code Switching, Types of Grammatical Code Switching, Reasons of Code Switching, Bilingual Education

Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fenomena kontekstual code switching yang terjadi didalam proses seminar proposal Program Studi Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Budidaya Binjai. Adapun ruang lingkupnya adalah; (1) jenis kontekstual code switching yang digunakan oleh dosen dan mahasiswa bahasa Inggris (2) faktor penentu kontekstual code switching yang dilakukan dosen dan mahasiswa didalam proses seminar proposal Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP Budidaya Binjai. Penelitian ini mengambil data dari tuturan dosen dan mahasiswa selama proses seminar proposal Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dan data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara, rekaman dan catatan lapangan. Dari hasil temuan dapat disimpulkan bahwa code switching terjadi dalam tuturan selama proses seminar proposal Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP Budidaya Binjai. Jenis kontekstual code switching yang terdapat dalam tuturan berdasarkan teori Hudson (1996) yaitu Situational code switching dan Metaphorical code switching . Dari temuan diperolah bahasa yang digunakan selama proses seminar proposal adalah bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Dari hasil penelitian juga disimpulkan bahwa faktor penentu dosen dan mahasiswa melakukan code switching adalah karena perubahan situasi tutur, kehadiran orang ketiga dan peralihan pokok pembicaraan. Tujuan PKM ini adalah membantu guru membuat aplikasi berbasis online sebagai salah satu media pembelajaran bagi guru serta membantu beberapa guru memanfaatkan ICT dalam proses belajar mengajar. Tujuan tersebut diwujudkan dengan m elaksanakan kegiatan pelatihan metode – metode pembelajaran serta media pembelajaran , m elaksanakan pembinaan kepada guru-guru yang kurang mampu mengoperasikan, m elaksanakan workshop tentang pembuatan aplikasi online bagi guru-guru dan melaksanakan program berkelanjutan terhadap pengoperasian computer serta pembuatan aplikasi online pada masa pandemic covid 19 khususnya google classroom. Target khusus yang dicapai pada PKM ini adalah guru SMP mampu membuat akun berbasis online seperti google classroom dan sebagainya sebagai media pembelajaran. Target lainnya adalah Semua guru mitra PKM mampu mengoperasikan computer sebagai media pembelajaran sehingga keberadaan sarana seperti lab computer dan yang lainnya dapat digunakan oleh semua guru mitra PKM.

The fundamental characteristics of the lecturers and the students in the English Department should use English. Lack of English competence is widely considered to be the major cause of code switching. The aim of our work to broaden current knowledge of the phenomenon of grammatical code switching in the English Department proposal seminar at STKIP Budidaya Binjai. This study applied descriptive qualitative research with the data from the utterances of the lecturers and the students during the process of proposal seminar. The data were obtained from observation, interview, and field note. Grammatical code switching in the English Department proposal seminar were tag code switching consisted of 12 utterances, inter-sentential code switching consisted of 15 utterances, intra-sentential code switching consisted of 19 utterances, proper noun and noun phrase consisted of 7 utterances, negative words consisted of 4 utterances, languages similarity consisted of 11 utterances and discourse marker consisted of 16 utterances. It can be concluded that grammatical code switching occurs in the English Department proposal seminar process

Learning style is the key to develop processes in working, learning at school, and interaction social with people. Each students has different learning style types and it influences students’ English linguistic intelligence forming. The aim of this study is to find out kinds of learning styles and the correlation to their linguistic intelligence at Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Binjai Kab. Langkat. This study was correlation research that used to know whether there was a correlation between learning styles and English linguistic intelligence at Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Binjai Kab. Langkat. This study was done by taking 50 respondents at Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Binjai Kab. Langkat that had English linguistic intelligence based on random sampling. The collecting of data in this study used questioner method. The technique of data analysis in this study used correlation product moment. The result of study showed that rhitung from correlation between learning styles (Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic) and English linguistic intelligence were bigger than rtabel (0.564, 0.656, 0.495) to N=50 by its sig 0% with the result that H0 was refused and Ha was accepted that had mean there was a significant correlation between learning styles and English linguistic intelligence at Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Binjai Kab. Langkat. The result showed the students had varieties frequencies of English linguistic intelligence because it was appropriate by learning styles that they had. It can be concluded there is a correlation between learning styles and English linguistic intelligence at Eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Binjai Kab. Langkat. Generation were born in every era eventually create their own language not least the latest generation commonly called the millennial generation. Specifically, the aim of our work broadens current knowledge of the phenomenon of Semantics Analysis of Slang (SAOS) in Social Media of Millennial Generation. This study investigated: 1) the types of SAOS used by millennial generation in social media; 2) how the meaning of SAOS used by millennial generation in social media; 3) why millennial generation used SAOS in social media. This study applied descriptive qualitative research in order to reveal the data from the discourse of English Department students at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara in social media such as Facebook and Instagram and it was obtained from observation, interview and documentation. The data showed that millennial generation used slang language in their communication in social media namely 33 slang languages in Facebook and 31 slang languages in Instagram. These languages consisted of five types of slang; fresh and creative; flippant; imitative; acronym; and clipping. The millennial generation used SAOS in their social media because some reasons such as to address, to initiate relax conversation, to express impression and to show intimacy. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kesulitan mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa Program Studi Bimbingan Konseling Semester I Tahun Ajaran 2017/2018 di Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Budidaya Binjai yang berjumlah 30 mahasiswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif (qualitative descriptive research), dengan instrumen angket dan observasi. Analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini mengacu kepada teori Sugiyono (2013) yaitu teknik wawancara, observasi/pengamatan, dokumentasi dan triangulasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dugaan tentang rendahnya profesionalisme dosen Bahasa Inggris adalah tidak terbukti sama sekali. Temuan penelitian disebabkan oleh faktor internal dan faktor eksternal meliputi: (1) Motivasi belajar mahasiswa cenderung rendah, (2) Tidak ada pemahaman materi terhadap pentingnya belajar bahasa Inggris, (3) Kesempatan belajar bahasa Inggris relatif kurang, (4) Terdapat faktor ‘lupa’ yang disebabkan terjadinya penumpukan daya hafal karena masuknya beragam bahasa lain yang bersifat melanggar kaidah gramatika bahasa yang menyerap dalam formasi syaraf otak. (5) Kurangnya dukungan dari lingkungan sekitar seperti orangtua, teman, maupun lingkungan tempat tinggal.

The aims are to find out: 1) the types of code switching used in the Toba Batak wedding ceremony, 2) how the participants switch language in the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony, and 3) reason why the participants switch language in the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony. The data were obtained from the utterances of participants which contain code switching during the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony precisely in Marhaban, replying and exchanging the verses of rhymes, exchanging of Tepak, and upah-upah stages. They were analyzed by using some steps as normally applied in descriptive qualitative method. The instruments of data collection were audio visual recorder. The findings of the study indicate that; a) Three types of code switching found namely intrasentential, intersentential and tag switching b) Participants in Toba Batak wedding ceremony mix some languages based on participants’ tribes which involved in the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony and they also adjust the situation and the condition of the people c) Three reasons of code switching during the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony namely the differences of family’s tribes, religion factor and place of wedding ceremony be held.
