Purpose. To develop a scale to measure (social) participation for use in rehabilitation, stigma reduction and social integration programmes. Method. A scale development study was carried out in Nepal, India and Brazil using standard methods. The instrument was to be based on the Participation domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), be cross-cultural in nature and assess client-perceived participation. Respondents rated their participation in comparison with a 'peer', defined as 'someone similar to the respondent in all respects except for the disease or disability'. Results. An 18-item instrument was developed in seven languages. Crohnbach's alpha was 0.92, intra-tester stability 0.83 and inter-tester reliability 0.80. Discrimination between controls and clients was good at a Participation Score threshold of 12. Responsiveness after a 'life change' was according to expectation. Conclusions . The Participation Scale is reliable and valid to measure client-perceived participation in people affected by leprosy or disability. It is expected to be valid in other (stigmatised) conditions also, but this needs confirmation. The scale allows collection of participation data and impact assessment of interventions to improve social participation. Such data may be compared between clients, interventions and programmes. Magnetic materials are widely used for many technologies in energy, health, transportation, computation, and data storage. For the latter, the readout of the magnetic state of a medium is crucial. Optical readout based on the magneto-optical Faraday effect was commercialized but soon abandoned because of the need for a complex circular polarization-sensitive readout. Combining chirality with magnetism can remove this obstacle, as chiral magnetic materials exhibit magneto-chiral dichroism, a differential absorption of unpolarized light dependent on their magnetic state. Molecular chemistry allows the rational introduction of chirality into single-molecule magnets (SMMs), ultimate nanoobjects capable of retaining magnetization. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of optical detection of the magnetic state of an SMM using unpolarized light on a novel air-stable Dy-based chiral SMM featuring a strong single-ion magnetic anisotropy. These findings might represent a paradigm shift in the field of optical data readout technologies.

Background: A biological seal that protects the implant from any biological or external impingement is created by the supracrestal attached tissues. Sohn's poncho technique is a technique that utilizes a healing abutment at the implant site to stabilize the platelet rich fibrin (PRF) membrane. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of Sohn's poncho technique used for placement of leukocyte PRF (L-PRF) membrane in improving the peri-implant mucosal thickness and width of keratinized mucosa as well as in the acceleration of healing process compared to the peri-implant mucosa surrounding healing abutments placed without the L-PRF membrane., Methods: A split mouth randomized controlled clinical trial was designed in which implants were placed in the mandibular posterior region. Healing abutment is placed along with the L-PRF membrane at the test site using Sohn's poncho technique and at control site conventional healing abutment placement was done at second stage. The thickness of peri-implant mucosa as primary outcome and the Width of keratinized tissue and healing as secondary outcomes were measured and assessed at various time intervals., Results: Statistically significant difference was seen in inter-group analysis when peri-implant mucosal thickness (3.8 ± 0.4 mm vs. 2.3 ± 0.4 mm) and width of keratinized mucosa (3.6 ± 0.6 mm vs. 2.7 ± 0.3 mm) in test and control groups respectively and intragroup analysis of test and control groups at 4 weeks and 6 weeks' time points. The control group showed faster healing when compared to the test group., Conclusion: Sohn's poncho technique in combination with L-PRF has the potential to improve the thickness of peri-implant mucosa and the width of keratinized mucosa around implants., (© 2023 American Academy of Periodontology.)

Here we report magneto-chiral dichroism (MChD) detected through visible and near-infrared light absorption of a chiral dysprosium(III) coordination polymer. The two enantiomers of [Dy III (H6(py) 2 )(hfac) 3 ] n [H6(py) 2 = 2,15-bis(4-pyridyl)ethynylcarbo[6]helicene; hfac - = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate], where the chirality is provided by a functionalized helicene ligand, were structurally, spectroscopically, and magnetically investigated. Magnetic measurements reveal a slow relaxation of the magnetization, with differences between enantiopure and racemic systems rationalized on the basis of theoretical calculations. When the enantiopure complexes are irradiated with unpolarized light in a magnetic field, they exhibit multiple MChD signals associated with the f-f electronic transitions of Dy III , thus providing the coexistence of MChD-active absorptions and single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior. These findings clearly show the potential that rationally designed chiral SMMs have in enabling the optical readout of magnetic memory through MChD.

Because the combination of chiral and magnetic properties is becoming more and more attractive for magneto-chiral phenomena, we here aim at exploring the induction of chirality to achiral magnetic molecules as a strategy for the preparation of magneto-chiral objects. To this end, we have associated free base- and metallo-porphyrins with silica nano helices, using a variety of elaboration methods, and have studied them mainly by electronic natural circular dichroism (NCD) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. While electrostatic or covalent surface grafting uniformly yielded very low induced CD (ICD) for the four assayed porphyrins, a moderate response was observed when the porphyrins were incorporated into the interior of the double-walled helices, likely due to the association of the molecules with the chirally-organized gemini surfactant. A generally stronger, but more variable, ICD was observed when the molecules were drop casted onto the helices immobilised on a quartz plate, likely due to the different capacities of the porphyrins to aggregate into chiral assemblies. Electronic spectroscopy, electron microscopy and IR spectroscopy were used to interpret the patterns of aggregation and their influence on ICD and MCD. No enhancement of MCD was observed as a result of association with the nanohelices except in the case of the free base, 5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS). This nanocomposite demonstrated a large ICD in the Soret region and a large MCD in the Q-region due to J-aggregation. However, no induced MChD was observed, possibly due to the spectral mismatch between the ICD and MCD peaks.

Aim: Successful functional and esthetic rehabilitation of edentulous jaws with implants depends on the optimal timing of placement, surgical protocol, materials used, cost-effectiveness, and satisfying patient needs. Increasing demand for shorter treatment times necessitates the immediate placement protocol. However, researchers have demonstrateda higher failure rate. A-PRF (Advanced platelet-rich fibrin) has exhibited accelerated bone regeneration potential. Early implant placement with a limited healing period, along with A-PRF, can be beneficial over conventional and immediate implant placement., Settings and Design: This prospective randomized clinical trial aims to assess the outcome of early implant placement in sockets preserved using A-PRF at six weeks and eight weeks of post-extraction. Two groups of 10 participantseach were formed. All patients underwent atraumatic extraction and socket preservation using A-PRF., Materials and Methods: A Partial-thickness pedicle graft was raised, and the extraction socket wasclosed. Implants wereplaced in at six and eight weeks of post-extraction in group A group B, respectively. The histomorphometric analysisassessedthe bone quality present at the timeof surgery. The insertion torque values were recorded during implant placement., Statistical Analysis Used: The obtained data were statistically analyzed using parametric tests, namely independent T-test for intergroup comparison., Results: T-test for torque values indicated a significantly higher torque value at eight weeks. The meanhistomorphometric value showeda significantly higher percentage of bone formation at eight weeks than at six weeks (P = 0.03)., Conclusion: Within the study's limitations, early implant placement in extraction sockets preserved with A-PRF had significantly higher insertion torque values and predictable bone at eight weeks compared to six weeks., Competing Interests: None

Objectives: The present investigation is to study the impact of yoga and meditation on Brain waves concerning physical and mental health. There are mainly three stages (steps) in the brain wave classification:(i) preprocessing, ii) feature extraction, and iii) classification. This work provides a review of interpretation methods of Brain signals (Electroencephalogram (EEG)) EEG during yoga and meditation. Past research has revealed significant mental and physical advantages with yoga and meditation., Methods: The research topic reviewed focused on the machine learning strategies applied for the interpretation of brain waves. In addressing the research questions highlighted earlier in the general introduction, we conducted a systematic search of articles from targeted scientific and journal online databases that included PubMed, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore Digital Library (IEEE), and Arxiv databases based on their relevance to the research questions and domain topic. The survey topic is relatively nascent, and therefore, the scope of the search period was limited to the 20-year timeline that was deemed representative of the research topic under investigation. The literature search was based on the keywords "EEG", "yoga*" and "meditation*". The key phrases were concatenated using Boolean expressions and applied to search through the selected online databases yielding a total of 120 articles. The online databases were selected based on the relevancy of content with the research title, research questions, and the domain application. The literature review search, process, and classification were carefully conducted guided by two defined measures; 1.) Inclusion criteria; and 2.) Exclusion criteria. These measures define the criteria for searching and extracting relevant articles relating to the research title and domain of interest., Results: Our literature search and review indicate a broad spectrum of neural mechanics under a variety of meditation styles have been investigated. A detailed analysis of various mental states using Zen, CHAN, mindfulness, TM, Rajayoga, Kundalini, Yoga, and other meditation styles have been described by means of EEG bands. Classification of mental states using KNN, SVM, Random forest, Fuzzy logic, neural networks, Convolutional Neural Networks has been described. Superior research is still required to classify the EEG signatures corresponding to different mental states., Conclusions: Yoga practice may be an effective adjunctive treatment for a clinical and aging population. Advanced research can examine the effects of specific branches of yoga on a designated clinical grouping. A novel aggregation induced emission based 2-(1-(3, 5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl) phenol (4) (IMD) fluorescent tags (FTs) was designed by simple acid catalyzed five-member N-heterocyclic ring forming reaction process. Powder X-ray diffraction results showed mechanofluorochromic properties of IMD FTs are easily reversible under external force due to the decrease in crystallinity. These IMD FTs also exhibits strong cyan-blue luminescence in solid state with high quantum efficiency. Detailed investigation of latent fingerprints (LFPs) showed permanent, immutable and unique pores that are distributed on the ridges. The visualization of such sweat pores opens new avenue in the field of forensic science. Hence, the prepared IMD FTs exhibit excellent Lipophicity (LP) properties, which endorse its possible applications for the visualization of sweat pores present in the LFPs. The LFPs visualized by IMD FTs exhibit excellent efficiency, sensitivity, selectivity, low background hindrance and less toxicity. The obtained result evident that the prepared FT and followed technique opens possible applications for the visualization of LFPs on various porous/semi-porous/non-porous surfaces under UV 365 nm light., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. In order to analyse the factors of demographic as well as disease related variables and their correlation with Rate of Defaulting (ROD) from Multi Drug Therapy (MDT) among leprosy patients, secondary data have been collected from 3,579 new cases registered for MDT, during a period of 4 years from 2007 to 2010 in four leprosy hospitals/ treatment centers across the four high endemic states viz. Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh; Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Year wise percentage of patients defaulted was calculated on aggregate as well as with reference to each centre and cross tabulated with demographic and disease related factors. Findings show that out of the total 3,579 new cases, 1944,(54.3%) defaulted with variation across centers ranged from 44 to 66 percent. Comparison of ROD against type of leprosy indicated that MB types defaulted (55.7%) more than PB (50.6%) types, (statistically significant difference, (p=0,04). ROD of male patients across the centers ranged from 45% to 67.7% in comparison with 42.4% to 61.5% of female patients. A-statistically significant difference (p=6.04) was found between the overall ROD of males (56.35%) and females (51.47%). The ROD among those with more severe disabilities (WHO Gr-2) ranged between 44% to 67.5% across the centers, while the same among those'with less severe disabilities (Gr-0&1) ranged from 42.6 to 72.7 percent. Comparison of ROD against severity of disability was found statistically significant only across 2 centers. No statistically significant variation was found when ROD of adult patients with refeince to each centr ranged between (43.6% to 65.4%) was compared with the same of children ranged beeIen (36.2% to 69.3%). Across each of these categories and centers,'the ROD remained consistent over the ,4 years. Based on the above findings'this may be concluded that male sex and MB types are significant correlates of default from treatment. Severity of disabilities plays significant role only in certain areas, probably due to other interfering factors, which needs to be further investiged.

Background: Treatment of depressive episode often poses a challenge. Although there are numerous medicines available for its treatment but they all have a lag period of 2-3 weeks before they start showing their result., Aim: The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that an initial lithium-tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) combination has a quicker and better antidepressant effect than standard TCA treatment in unipolar depression., Materials and Methods: Twenty unipolar depressed inpatients under lithium-TCA treatment were compared with twenty patients with similar diagnosis treated with TCA-placebo combination. The duration of the study was 4 weeks under double-blind conditions., Results: Initial lithium-TCA treatment reduced depressive symptoms significantly more than TCA alone. The difference was evident from 1 st week onward and persisted at 4 weeks., Conclusion: Lithium augmentation of TCA at the outset offers a strategy to reduce the lag period of antidepressant action. The choice can be made for those patients who are likely to benefit from long-term prophylaxis., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

Influence of uniform transverse magnetic field and ambient Ar pressure on the plasma plume produced by Nd:YAG laser ablation of barium has been investigated by time-of-flight optical emission spectroscopy. Experiments were carried out with laser pulse energy of 150 mJ and 0.45 Tesla magnetic field. The time-of-flight profiles showed ambient pressure independent behavior at 6-mm distance from the target, which is attributed to the diamagnetic behavior of the laser plasma. A theoretical model is proposed that may explain the compression of temporal profiles of the ionic lines.

Unlabelled: Summary To maximise successful completion of multi-drug therapy (MDT) and optimise treatment outcomes for people with leprosy, it is vital to understand the relative importance of perceived factors which prevent them from completing the required number of doses in time., Objective: To explore personal, family, social, community, attitudinal, practical, geographical, cultural and traditional factors which may influence adherence to treatment, a two-phase study was undertaken comprising issue identification via focus groups, and a ranking exercise via individual interview., Study Design: The perspectives of 895 respondents (320 people affected by leprosy who were not able to complete treatment, 302 of their 'operational heads of family', and 273 of their nearby community members) across four states of India namely i.e. Andhra Pradesh (Salur), Chhattisgarh (Chandkhuri), Maharashtra (Kothara) and Uttar Pradesh (Barabanki) were collected, using a checklist interview method., Results: Findings suggest that seeing positive changes in their symptoms as well as not seeing improvement can lead to non-completion of MDT. Problems with scheduling and travel expenses were also key issues. Better management of the expectations of people affected by leprosy and reducing the burden of treatment may be important strategies. The importance of stigma and poverty were noted through a number of issues, none of which were particularly highly ranked., Conclusions: The nature and diversity of perceived issues identified across respondent type and particularly region, suggest that the determinants of adherence are complex and multi-factorial. More community based approaches with greater coordination at the community level are recommended.

Peacekeeping operations are but one aspect of the systems of peace that have evolved over the past seven decades in a world that is riven with violence of all kinds. With the end of cold war in the late eighties of the last century we have come to see much intrastate violence, in addition to usual interstate hostilities and war, arising out of religious, political, ethnic and economic differences between people. In the changed scenario peacekeeping operations have become complex politico-military-humanitarian efforts. A soldier, trained for conventional military operations, is obliged to participate in the unconventional operations of waging peace in alien lands often in volatile and violent situations and in the process he stands to get exposed to widely variable demands for adjustment that have the potential to bring to the fore many maladaptive responses. Peacekeeping operations also have the potential to offer opportunities for growth and resilience. India is a major player in peacekeeping activities for well over sixty years all over the world. It is necessary for the commanders and mental health professionals to understand the multifarious factors that impinge on the peacekeeping soldier's mind and the emerging patterns of responses thereof for effective management trained manpower and fulfillment of mission objectives.

Context: Diabetes affects 9.2% of adults in India. About 8-16% of its population also suffer from depression. Both diseases pose a serious health challenge at individual and system level. The prevalence of depression in diabetes is much higher than in the general population. Undiagnosed and untreated depression puts people at higher morbidity and mortality risk., Aim: To study the prevalence of depression in diabetes and to identify associated risk factors., Settings and Design: Case control study carried out in an outpatient setting of a tertiary hospital in central India., Materials and Methods: One hundred and nine type 2 diabetes patients and 91 healthy controls formed the subjects of the study. Sociodemographic data were obtained on seven parameters. Comprehensive clinical data were obtained by means of standard procedures. Blood sugar levels and glycosylated hemoglobin levels were measured to assess glycemic control. Data of diabetic patients and controls as well as that of depressed and nondepressed diabetics were subjected to statistical analysis., Results: About 42.2% of diabetes patients and only 4.39% of controls had depression. About 19% of diabetics had peripheral neuropathy but had much higher neuropathic symptoms. Depression was not related to any sociodemographic or clinical factors but was strongly associated with poor glycemic control., Conclusion: Depression is highly prevalent in diabetes. Physical symptoms mask depression. Special attention needs to be paid to diagnose depression in diabetes and treat it appropriately along with effective glycemic control. Diabetes patients need to be treated collaboratively by physicians and psychiatrists.

Background: Tumor markers are substances, which quantitatively changes in serum, during the tumor development, one such tumor marker is serum β2-microglobulin (β2-m). The aim of this study was to establish the role of β2-m as a biochemical parameter for diagnosis and prognosis of oral carcinoma by estimation of serum β2-m levels in potentially malignant lesions, conditions, and oral squamous cell carcinoma., Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on 48 subjects (16 control, 8 oral submucous fibrosis, 8 oral leukoplakia, and 16 oral squamous cell carcinoma patients of different stages), conducted at department of Oral Medicine, Kothiwal Dental College, Moradabad, India. Under aseptic precautions, 5 ml venous blood was drawn and serum was separated. Estimation of β2-m level in serum was carried out by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. The data were analyzed by using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS 17.0) software. Cases and controls were tested for statistical significance with one-way ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey's HSD. Values of P < 0.05 were considered significant., Results: The mean serum β2-m level in the control group was 1.173 ± 0.059, in potentially malignant lesions/conditions group was 1.688 ± 0.137 and in oral squamous cell carcinoma group was 2.835 ± 0.0313. This progressive increase in serum β2-m level was found to be highly significant (P value < 0.001). Results of Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed β2-m as a 100% sensitive and specific biomarker for oral squamous cell carcinoma., Conclusion: The present study establishes β2-m as a specific biological tumor marker for diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of oral squamous cell carcinoma.

In response to an international strategy to prioritise and focus research efforts in leprosy, this conceptual protocol outlines a research plan to address key translational research priorities. The protocol describes in broad terms a five-phase psychosocial and service-related research programme to facilitate: prevention of delay in diagnosis, improvement of adherence with multi-drug therapy, the roll out of chemoprophylaxis and increased participation in community based rehabilitation. The protocol proposes a model of research utilisation and the notion of complexity to form an integrating theoretical framework for exploring and enhancing research translation. The proposed sequential research programme is characterised by traditional and participatory strategies, culminating in participatory implementation of findings. Publication of the conceptual protocol prior to operationalisation and commencement of the research aims to encourage debate, refinement of strategies, collaboration and the optimisation of resources.

Practice of psychiatry is a complex activity because the psychiatrist generally practises his art in an emotionally charged environment with patients who may not be in a in a state of mind to exercise autonomy as a result of cognitive impairment and preoccupation with symptoms. No one principle of ethics will be suitable to guide right conduct in widely variable situations. Making ethical judgements in the military context can be difficult and may have potential for abuse as for an uniformed psychiatrist mission takes priority over man. However mission centered and medical text book centred ethics need not be compartamentalised. The present paper seeks to offer a brief overview of ethical principles and specific situations in which one may have to make ethical judgements.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of 0.1% tacrolimus powder in Oraguard-B for the treatment of patients with symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP)., Methods: This was a nonrandomized, nonblinded study conducted in the outpatient department. The 20 patients with symptomatic OLP oral lichen planus who were asked to participate in the study were provided with 20-g containers of the study medication. Patients were asked to use the medication over the symptomatic areas three times a day until resolution of the lesion. Patients were recalled to assess the drug response every 15 days., Results: The duration of treatment ranged from 30 to 183 days, with a mean of 81.8 ± 44.4 days; all 20 patients reported a favourable response to the topical tacrolimus therapy. Eleven patients had complete resolution of their lesions. In 16 of 20 patients, there was marked resolution in symptoms as recorded by visual analogue scale. Out of 10 patients followed up for a period of 3 months, 5 had recurrence of their lesions but with less intensity, and the patients were symptomless. No serious side effects were associated with the study medication., Conclusion: Topical tacrolimus 0.1% in Oraguard-B was effective and safe in treating patients with OLP. However, there is still a need to undertake more detailed and objective clinical studies to determine the exact benefit of tacrolimus compared with conventional therapies and examine the influence of different dose regimes and formulations and assess the incidence of recurrence.

Angiomyxomas are relatively a group of uncommon myxoid mesenchymal tumors characterized by frequent local recurrences and show lack of malignant potential. Basically three types of angiomyxomas are recognized superficial, aggressive, and angiomyofibroblastoma. Though the angiomyxomas are rarely reported in the head and neck region, the paper shows reported cases intraorally in the buccal mucosa and floor of the mouth. Here, the authors report a rare case of angiomyxoma presenting as a growth in the upper posterior alveolar mucosa.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonography (USG) with color Doppler and power Doppler applications over conventional radiography in the diagnosis of periapical lesions., Materials and Methods: Thirty patients having inflammatory periapical lesions of the maxillary or mandibular anterior teeth and requiring endodontic surgery were selected for inclusion in this study. All patients consented to participate in the study. We used conventional periapical radiographs as well as USG with color Doppler and power Doppler for the diagnosis of these lesions. Their diagnostic performances were compared against histopathologic examination. All data were compared and statistically analyzed., Results: USG examination with color Doppler and power Doppler identified 29 (19 cysts and 10 granulomas) of 30 periapical lesions accurately, with a sensitivity of 100% for cysts and 90.91% for granulomas and a specificity of 90.91% for cysts and 100% for granulomas. In comparison, conventional intraoral radiography identified only 21 lesions (sensitivity of 78.9% for cysts and 45.4% for granulomas and specificity of 45.4% for cysts and 78.9% for granulomas). There was definite correlation between the echotexture of the lesions and the histopathological features except in one case., Conclusions: USG imaging with color Doppler and power Doppler is superior to conventional intraoral radiographic methods for diagnosing the nature of periapical lesions in the anterior jaws. This study reveals the potential of USG examination in the study of other jaw lesions.

In order to understand nature of the medical and society related problems of leprosy cured individuals from various socio-cultural groups and develop proper system to address the current needs of leprosy cured, data have been collected from leprosy cured, employing qualitative methods such as FGDs, open ended interviews and participant observation and a quantitative survey method. The findings show that there has been not much change in the socio-cultural and economic situation of the leprosy cured especially the disabled ones, except a recognition in the health system that their anti-leprosy treatment is completed. In the present integrated health care system, disabled leprosy patients are also expected to seek their own health care by themselves along with general public, which is not happening because the leprosy cured are not yet perceived to be cured of leprosy by community as well as by themselves. Though some of the problems of leprosy cured seem to be poverty related, qualitative analysis shows, a vast gap between poverty problem of leprosy afflicted and non leprosy afflicted. Any special programme to bridge the gap between PHC and leprosy community is required and the new functionaries like ASHA in National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and similar developments could be of vital use to make them cured in totality.

Leprosy services were integrated into the general health a decade ago but it seems that a majority of public are still ignorant of this development. Hence, a study was done in Uttar Pradesh, India to determine the awareness about integration and its relationships to various socio-demographic factors. A multistage representative random sample of 3000 persons was chosen in Faizabad district, selecting a sample of 3 villages each situated within 1 km, 1-3 km and beyond 3 km of a PHC. A systematic random sample of 10% of households was chosen from selected villages and an adult male and an adult female from each household interviewed by a qualified investigator. Data were computerized and cross- tabulated against distance from the PHC, sex, age, education and occupational status. Only 45.7% in Uttar Pradesh are aware of the availability of leprosy treatment facilities at PHC but most knew that MDT was free. A smaller proportion was also aware of other facilities such as ulcer dressing and treatment of complications. Family members and health workers and PHC were the main source of information. It is concluded that massive efforts are urgently needed to educate the rural public on integration.

As part of a community-based action research to reduce leprosy stigma, village committees were formed in 3 hyper endemic states of India. From a total of 10 village committees with nearly 200 members from Uttar Pradesh, a systematic random sample of 69 men and 23 women were interviewed in-depth regarding their views on sustainability of integrated leprosy services, as currently adopted. Their recommendations were also sought for further enhancement. Percentages were computed and compared for statistical significance using the z-normal test. The findings show that less than 50% of the respondents were confident that the present trend in voluntary early reporting for MDT and management of complications was adequate to sustain the integrated leprosy services. There were no differences by men or women members and they felt that lack of proper facilities, training and orientation of staff are most influencing factors. Many suggestions were given for improving the sustainability.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which plays an important role in neurodevelopmental plasticity and cognitive performance, has been implicated in neuropsychopathology of schizophrenia. We examined the levels of both cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma BDNF concomitantly in drug-naive first-episode psychotic (FEP) subjects with ELISA to determine if these levels were different from control values and if any correlation exists between CSF and plasma BDNF levels. A significant reduction in BDNF protein levels was observed in both plasma and CSF of FEP subjects compared to controls. BDNF levels showed significant negative correlation with the scores of baseline PANSS positive symptom subscales. In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between plasma and CSF BDNF levels in FEP subjects. The parallel changes in BDNF levels in plasma and CSF indicate that plasma BDNF levels reflect the brain changes in BDNF levels in schizophrenia.

Poor estrus expression and anestrus decrease the reproductive efficiency of buffaloes. The objective of this study was to determine whether the addition of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) to an estrous synchronization protocol and timed insemination could improve ovulation and pregnancy rates of anestrous buffalo cows under tropical conditions. The study population comprised 65 lactating Murrah buffalo cows which were assigned to CIDR (n=33) or CIDR+eCG (n=32) treatment groups. Cows in the CIDR group were fitted for 8d with a controlled intravaginal drug release (CIDR) device containing 1.38 g progesterone, received GnRH (10 microg i.m.) on D 0, PGF(2alpha) (750 microg i.m.) on D 7, and GnRH (10 microg i.m.) on D 9; whereas cows in the CIDR+eCG group received the same treatment plus eCG (500 IU, i.m.) at the time of PGF(2alpha) treatment. All cows were inseminated 16-20 h after the second GnRH treatment. Blood samples were obtained 10d before the start of synchronization treatment (Day -10) and at the onset of treatment (Day 0). Cows with plasma progesterone concentrations <1 ng/mL recorded in both samples (Low-Low levels of P4) were classified as non-cyclic cows. Similarly, when either one or both of the sample pair contained concentrations of serum progesterone >/=1 ng/mL (High-High, Low-High, or High-Low levels of P4), the buffaloes were classified as cyclic cows. Ovulation rate, defined as the number of buffaloes with at least one corpus luteum 10 days after insemination, was significantly higher (P=0.018) in the CIDR+eCG (84.4%) cows than in the CIDR cows (57.6%). Pregnancy rate was numerically lower in CIDR (27.3%) than CIDR+eCG (40.6%) cows, though differences were not significant (P=0.25). Pregnancy rates for CIDR+eCG cows were similar to that of cows inseminated after natural estrus (40.9%; 29/71). In the non-cyclic animals, higher ovulation rates (P=0.026) were recorded for the CIDR+eCG (81%) than for the CIDR cows (47.4%). Our results indicate that the addition of eCG to a progesterone-based estrous synchronization regimen substantially improves the ovulation rate in non-cyclic buffaloes. When this treatment is followed by timed AI, pregnancy rates achieved in anestrous buffaloes, whether cyclic and non-cyclic, may approach the rates observed in cows inseminated at natural estrus.

To assess the level of awareness about the different provisions of the persons with Disability Act (1995) among the health care professionals, 201 health care professionals dealing with the disabled persons from different parts of India were interviewed using structured interview checklist. The data were analysed through statistical package of social sciences software. Chi-square test were applied on the variables and the Pvalues were ascertained. The results show that 48.3% knew about administration hierarchy, 53.7% of respondents were aware of the free education available for the disabled, 68.5% were aware of the employment scheme, 62.7% about poverty alleviation schemes, 59.2% know about the traveling benefits, 56.2% of professionals were aware of the benefits for people with low vision. Only 29.9% of respondents knew about provisions to overcome architectural barriers. 43.8% of them knew about the least disability percentage whereas only 28.4% were aware of research and manpower schemes. Regarding affirmative action, 32.17% told correctly and 52.7% of the professionals responded correctly with respectto non- discrimination schemes. The level of awareness among the professionals working in rural regions is lower with regard to administration hierarchy and poverty alleviation schemes. Informations regarding disabled friendly environments and research and manpower development were found to be low among respondents of all professions which need to be effectively intervened. Gender did not show any influence with respect to the components of the act. The study showed that there is an ample need for educational interventions among the health care professionals in all socio-demography. Inclusion of PWD Act in the curriculum of medical schools as a topic in conferences and workshops for health care professionals are suggested.
