The microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) technique has been developed as a sustainable methodology for the improvement of the engineering characteristics of sandy soils. However, the efficiency of MICP-treated sand has not been well established in the literature considering cyclic loading under undrained conditions. Furthermore, the efficacy of different bacterial strains in enhancing the cyclic properties of MICP-treated sand has not been sufficiently documented. Moreover, the effect of wetting-drying (WD) cycles on the cyclic characteristics of MICP-treated sand is not readily available, which may contribute to the limited adoption of MICP treatment in field applications. In this study, strain-controlled consolidated undrained (CU) cyclic triaxial testing was conducted to evaluate the effects of MICP treatment on standard Ennore sand from India with two bacterial strains: Sporosarcina pasteurii and Bacillus subtilis. The treatment durations of 7 d and 14 d were considered, with an interval of 12 h between treatments. The cyclic characteristics, such as the shear modulus and damping ratio, of the MICP-treated sand with the different bacterial strains have been estimated and compared. Furthermore, the effect of WD cycles on the cyclic characteristics of MICP-treated sand has been evaluated considering 5–15 cycles and aging of samples up to three months. The findings of this study may be helpful in assessing the cyclic characteristics of MICP-treated sand, considering the influence of different bacterial strains, treatment duration, and WD cycles.

For the characterization of fiber-reinforced soil under static loading conditions, there is a wealth of literature. However, study on the dynamic behavior of fiber-reinforced soil is very limited. Now that earthquakes are occurring frequently around the world, the dynamic soil analysis has become important for all classes of geotechnical engineering problems. Through numerical simulation of triaxial specimens, the current study explores the behaviour of fiber-reinforced cohesionless soil. The numerical model was validated using existing laboratory triaxial compression testing literature. The stress–strain response of fiber-reinforced sand has been investigated using static and cyclic triaxial testing, as well as other combinations of fiber contents. Fiber-reinforced sand is tested for bulk modulus, shear modulus, and damping values. Effects of fiber contents on static and dynamic stress–strain response of fiber-reinforced soil are highlighted. It has been observed from results that, with an increase in fiber content modulus of elasticity, bulk modulus and shear modulus values increase while damping coefficients decrease for the same. It is believed that the highlighted numerical approach will be an alternative to laboratory experiments to determine the dynamic properties of fiber-reinforced soil.

Introduction Acute and chronic pancreatitis (CP) are inflammatory conditions of the pancreas that cause local and systemic complications. The epidemiology of these conditions are not well-known in India.Methods and analysis We describe the protocol and procedures of a multicentre study for delineating the epidemiology of pancreatitis in India. We plan to cover 110 000 people across 10 geographically distributed sites in 10 states of India to estimate the burden and risk factors of CP. Trained investigators will make house visits and screen for abdominal pain requiring hospitalisation or pre-diagnosed CP. The screened positive participants will be reviewed by a gastroenterologist to confirm the diagnosis of CP based on radiological imaging. For each case, four controls will be selected and data on risk factors for CP (tobacco, alcohol, family history, metabolic causes) and blood for genetic markers will be collected. Information on the cost of treatment and quality of life will be collected from patients with CP. For estimating incidence of acute pancreatitis (AP), hospital-based sentinel surveillance will be conducted in 10 districts across these 10 states. All hospitals in the district will be contacted to provide a line list of admissions due to acute abdomen including AP for 2 years. The spread of acute abdomen cases will be used to define the catchment area and estimate the denominator population. The line-listed cases with AP living in the catchment area will form the numerator to calculate the incidence. The study will provide critical information for planning pancreatitis-related services in the country.Ethics and dissemination The institutional ethics committee (IECs) at all the participating sites have given their approval for the study. All the participants whose data will be collected will be included after written informed consent. The results may be presented at national or international conferences and will be reported in peer-reviewed publications.

Abstract A heterogeneous copper-catalyzed A3 coupling reaction of aldehydes, amines, and alkynes for the synthesis of propargylamines and benzofurans has been developed. Here, the modified metal–organic framework MIL-101(Cr)-SB-Cu complex was chosen as the heterogeneous copper catalyst and prepared via post-synthetic modification of amino-functionalized MIL-101(Cr). The structure, morphology, thermal stability, and copper content of the catalyst were determined by FT-IR, PXRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, TGA, XPS, and ICP-OES. The catalyst shows high catalytic activity for the aforementioned reactions under solvent-free reaction conditions. High yields, low catalyst loading, easy catalyst recovery and reusability with not much shrink in catalytic activity, and a good yield of 82% in gram-scale synthesis are some of the benefits of this protocol that drove it towards sustainability.

Studies are being carried out on achieving the maximum quality of garlic through various approaches. In Bangladesh, new garlic varieties (BARI 1–4, BAU-1, BAU-2, BAU-5) have been recently developed by artificial selection to enhance their quality. The present study aimed to evaluate their potency in terms of bioactive properties and organosulfur compounds content using different bioassay and GC–MS techniques while comparing them with other accessible varieties (Chinese, Indian, Local). The new variety, BARI-3 showed the highest antioxidant activity and total phenolic content. It was also found with the highest level of a potent blood pressure-lowering agent, 2-vinyl-4H-1,3-dithiine (78.15 %), which is never reported in any garlic at this percentage. However, the local variety exhibited greater inhibitory properties against the tested organisms including multidrug-resistant pathogens compared to other varieties. This study primarily shows the potential of these two kinds of garlic for their further utilization and development.

Abstract Differentiation of Crohn’s disease (CD) from intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) is a big challenge to gastroenterologists because of their indistinguishable features and insensitive diagnostic tools. A non-invasive biomarker is urgently required to distinguish ITB/CD patients particularly in India, a TB endemic region, where CD frequency is increasing rapidly due to urbanization. Among the three differentially expressed miRNAs obtained from small RNA transcriptomic profiling of ileocaecal/terminal ileal tissue of ITB/CD patients (n = 3), only two down-regulated miRNAs, miR-31-5p, and miR-215-5p showed comparable data in qRT-PCR. Out of which, only miR-215-5p was detectable in the patient’s plasma, but there was no significant difference in expression between ITB/CD. On the other hand, miR-375-3p, the pulmonary TB specific marker was found in higher amount in the plasma of ITB patients than CD while reverse expression was observed in the ileocaecal/terminal ileal tissues of the same patients. Next, using Bioplex pro-human cytokine 48-plex screening panel, only three chemokines, Eotaxin-1/CCL11, SDF-1α/CXCL12, and G-CSF have noted significantly different levels in the serum of ITB/CD patients. ROC analysis has revealed that compared to a single molecule, a combination of miR-375-3p + Eotaxin-1/CCL11 + SDF-1α /CXCL12 + G-CSF showed a better AUC of 0.83, 95% CI (0.69–0.96) with 100% specificity and positive predictive value while sensitivity, negative predictive value, and accuracy were 56%, 69%, and 78% respectively in distinguishing ITB from CD. This study suggests that a combination of plasma markers shows better potential in differentiating ITB from CD than a single marker and this panel of markers may be used for clinical management of ITB/CD patients.

Overuse of antimicrobial drugs has led to selective resistance to existing antibiotics, necessitating the development of different and improved alternatives. Natural substances, particularly those derived from plants, are well-known for their therapeutic characteristics, including antibacterial and antifungal properties. Over the last decade, several pharmacological investigations on medicinal plants have been carried out based on their traditional uses in complementary therapies. In our current study, we have evaluated the pharmacological properties of Mesua ferrea seed ethanolic extract. To test their antioxidant properties, a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH)-radical scavenging activity test was performed. Using the agar well diffusion method, the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts of M. ferra seed was investigated against four bacteria such as Salmonella typhi, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The ethanol extract of M. ferra seed was shown to be efficient against gram positive and gram-negative bacteria in this investigation, although Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli. Demonstrated resistance to this extract. The results revealed that gram positive bacteria were more sensitive than gram negative bacteria to the ethanolic extract of M. ferra seed at all concentrations utilized (from 20 μL to 100 μL). The lowest inhibition zone was produced by a dose of 20 μL with an inhibition zone equal to 11 mm and 14.33 mm, while the maximum inhibition zone was produced by a high concentration of 100 μL with an inhibition zone 19.33 mm and 18 mm against Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus respectively. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) was performed to identify the compounds in the extract to determine their pharmacological effects and then we performed in-silico experiments to determine the biological activity of the compounds. We have concluded from the study that M. ferrea seed can be a potential source for lead compound development.

Natural products derived from microorganisms serve as a vital resource of valuable pharmaceuticals and therapeutic agents. Streptomyces is the most ubiquitous bacterial genus in the environments with prolific capability to produce diverse and valuable natural products with significant biological activities in medicine, environments, food industries, and agronomy sectors. However, many natural products remain unexplored among Streptomyces. It is exigent to develop novel antibiotics, agrochemicals, anticancer medicines, etc., due to the fast growth in resistance to antibiotics, cancer chemotherapeutics, and pesticides. This review article focused the natural products secreted by Streptomyces and their function and importance in curing diseases and agriculture. Moreover, it discussed genomic-driven drug discovery strategies and also gave a future perspective for drug development from the Streptomyces.

Metal–semiconductor hybrid nanomaterials (HNMs) exhibit unique properties that are distinct from individual nanostructures, leading to promising applications in optical technologies. The interfacial linkage of semiconductor and metal nanoparticles (NPs) via cogelation is an effective strategy to produce HNMs that show strong plasmon‐exciton coupling and improved physical properties. However, optical properties of these hybrids show little to no tunability. Herein, CdSe/Ag hybrid aerogels that show tunable absorption and photoluminescence (PL) are produced by cogelation of CdSe nanorods (NRs) or NPs with Ag hollow NPs. Hybrid electronic states are created by overlapping the excitonic absorption of CdSe NRs or NPs with the plasmonic absorption of Ag NPs. Physical characterization of the hybrids reveals an interconnected network of hexagonal CdSe and cubic Ag NPs, linked by Ag+ and Se2− surface species, without intervening ligands. PL spectra exhibit maxima at 640 and 720 nm for the CdSe NPs/Ag and CdSe NRs/Ag hybrids, respectively, corresponding to new radiative decay mechanisms. Time‐resolved PL data support the emergence of new radiative pathways, kinetically and energetically distinct from the excitonic and plasmonic properties of primary NPs. This new approach of metal–semiconductor hybrid formation through cogelation is intriguing for the design of high‐efficiency HNMs without detrimental PL quenching.

Background: Psychological factors have been prominently implicated in the causation as well as maintenance of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Studies comparing psychiatric morbidity in IBS with healthy controls have reported contrasting findings. The current study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients with IBS in comparison to healthy controls and to explore the relationship, if any, of anxiety and depression with various subtypes of IBS. Materials and Methods: Fifty consecutive patients of IBS (diagnosed as per Rome III criteria) between 18 and 65 years of age and fifty age- and sex-matched healthy controls were assessed for the presence of anxiety and depression using Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAMA) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD), respectively. Results: The patient group scored higher than controls (P < 0.001) in both HAMA and HAMD scores. The HAMA scores were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the severe IBS group compared to those with moderate IBS. HAMA scores predicted 25.6% (R2 = 0.256) of variance in IBS severity scores. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of HAMD scores. Conclusion: The high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities such as anxiety and depression in IBS samples in our study provides evidence in favor of proper screening for these disorders in gastrointestinal clinics. Recognition and treatment for these comorbidities can improve the quality of life as well as overall outcomes.
