We describe the status of our effort to realize a first neutrino factory and the progress made in understanding the problems associated with the collection and cooling of muons towards that end. We summarize the physics that can be done with neutrino factories as well as with intense cold beams of muons. The physics potential of muon colliders is reviewed, both as Higgs factories and compact high-energy lepton colliders. The status and time scale of our research and development effort is reviewed as well as the latest designs in cooling channels including the promise of ring coolers in achieving longitudinal and transverse cooling simultaneously. We detail the efforts being made to mount an international cooling experiment to demonstrate the ionization cooling of muons.

The status of the research on muon colliders is discussed and plans are outlined for future theoretical and experimental studies. Besides work on the parameters of a 3–4 and 0.5 TeV center-of-mass (COM) energy collider, many studies are now concentrating on a machine near 0.1 TeV (COM) that could be a factory for the s-channel production of Higgs particles. We discuss the research on the various components in such muon colliders, starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate pions from a heavy-Z target and proceeding through the phase rotation and decay (π→μν_{μ}) channel, muon cooling, acceleration, storage in a collider ring, and the collider detector. We also present theoretical and experimental R&D plans for the next several years that should lead to a better understanding of the design and feasibility issues for all of the components. This report is an update of the progress on the research and development since the feasibility study of muon colliders presented at the Snowmass '96 Workshop [R. B. Palmer, A. Sessler, and A. Tollestrup, Proceedings of the 1996 DPF/DPB Summer Study on High-Energy Physics (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Menlo Park, CA, 1997)].

This paper proposes a new thin curved sensor/strip to measure the relative slip between pad and specimen under fretting condition. Since the relative contact displacement is an important parameter to categorize the fretting process, the measurement of contact displacement between pad and specimen is necessary. Because of high yield strength and the ability to return to its initial position even with notable deflection, the spring steel have chosen to fabricate the thin curved strip. Before the fabrication, the detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the thin curved sensor was carried out. The strip consists of different shapes (rectangular, circular and elliptical) of slots and the number of slots in each strip is varied from 2 to 6. The Strain Energy Approach (SEA) has been used to calculate the displacement for the curved strip and it was compared, verified and validated with its FEA and Experimental results. From FEA study of thin curved strip with slots, four configurations were chosen to measure micro level displacement between pad and specimen under fretting experiments. The study reveals that the increasing number and size of holes presented in the curved strip indicate that the increased in displacement and von-Mises stress values which offers the higher flexibility to the strip. The reduction in area and minimum thickness of the curved strip could be the reason for the decrease in the stiffness of the curved strip. This study explores the use of new simple and novel instrument/sensor to capture the micro level relative displacement between the pad and specimen under fretting condition.

Many oxidative stress related diseases are as a result of accumulation of free radicals in the body. Present studies are directed towards finding natural antioxidants of plants origins. The present study was carried out to determine the phytochemical constituents, its qualities and antioxidant activity of Senna alata hydroalcoholic leaf extract as per the standard pharmacopoeial protocol. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro antioxidant activities and to screen for phytochemical constituents of Senna alata. The free radical scavenging activity of hydroalcoholic extract against various assay in terms of IC50 value were DPPH (2, 2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay (715.26μg/ml), reducing power assay (715.26μg/ml), ABTS test (643.95μg/m) and Nitric oxide test (856.79μg / ml) was evaluated. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, anthroquinone, phenols, saponin, tannin and carbohydrates. Quantitative phytochemical analysis revealed the amount of Alkaloid content (49.2%), Flavonoid content (6.96%) and Phenolic content (69.72%) present. Also the Physicochemical examination analysis were also carried out in Senna alata powdered sample which showed the presence of Total Ash (10.25 ± 0.04), Acid Insoluble Ash (2.75 ± 0.03), Water Soluble Ash (1.98 ± 0.02), Alcohol Extract Value (6.32 ± 0.03), Water Extract Value (11.19 ± 0.02), Loss on Dry (6.14 ± 0.03) and Foreign Matter (0.38 ± 0.01). Our findings provide evidence that the crude hydroalcoholic extract of S.alata is a potential source of natural antioxidants, and this justified its uses in folkloric medicines.

The axial, as well as the equatorial forms of [Fe(CO)4(GeX); where X represents chalcogens], were examined using DFT quantum simulations with the B3LYP level of theory. According to the study of total energy, equatorial variants are usually more stable when compared with the axially substituted ones. The bonding characteristics of these complexes were revealed by the NPA and EDA analyses. The bond index for the M-GeX bond was discovered by the WBI analysis. According to the FMO study, the complexes HOMO-LUMO energy gap varied from 4.38 to 4.73 eV, which is less than that of Fe(CO)5. NBO study revealed that the contribution from Fe atoms for the Fe-Ge bond is less than Ge. Additionally, it is revealed that a similar impact is observed on the carbonyl group (in the Fe-C bond); however, the contribution from carbon is greater than the Ge.

Tidal wetlands, commonly known as salt marshes, are highly productive ecosystems in temperate regions worldwide. These environments constitute a unique flora composed primarily of salt-tolerant herbs, grasses, and shrubs. This study investigated the therapeutic properties of ten salt marsh plants collected mainly from Palk Bay and Mannar Gulf against Candida disease. This study examined the changes in natural plant products associated with their anti-Candida growth activity during two distinct seasonal changes—monsoon and summer. The potential of the salt marshes to inhibit the growth of five different Candida strains was assessed using four solvents. In phytochemical analysis, the extracts obtained from a Launaea sarmentosa exhibited the highest results compared to the other plant extracts. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed 12 peaks with alkane, aldehyde, amine, aromatic ester, phenol, secondary alcohol, and 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted. Gas-chromatography–mass spectrometry detected 30 compounds. Cyclotetracosane, lupeol, β-amyrin, and 12-oleanen-3-yl acetate showed the highest peak range. In particular, plant samples collected during the monsoon season were more effective in preventing Canda growth than the summer plant samples. In the monsoon season, the salt marsh plant extracted with ethyl acetate showed a high anti-Candida growth activity, while in the summer, the acetone extract exhibited a higher anti-Candida growth activity than the other solvents. The hexane extract of L. sarmentosa showed the highest inhibition zone against all Candidal strains. Furthermore, compounds, such as β-amyrin, lupeol, and oxirane, from the hexane extract of L. sarmentosa play a vital role in anti-Candida activity. This paper reports the potential of tidal marsh plant extracts for developing new antifungal agents for Candida infections.

Forecasting of rice area, production, and productivity of Odisha was made from the historical data of 1950-51 to 2008-09 by using univariate autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models and was compared with the forecasted all Indian data. The autoregressive (p) and moving average (q) parameters were identified based on the significant spikes in the plots of partial autocorrelation function (PACF) and autocorrelation function (ACF) of the different time series. ARIMA (2, 1, 0) model was found suitable for all Indian rice productivity and production, whereas ARIMA (1, 1, 1) was best fitted for forecasting of rice productivity and production in Odisha. Prediction was made for the immediate next three years, that is, 2007-08, 2008-09, and 2009-10, using the best fitted ARIMA models based on minimum value of the selection criterion, that is, Akaike information criteria (AIC) and Schwarz-Bayesian information criteria (SBC). The performances of models were validated by comparing with percentage deviation from the actual values and mean absolute percent error (MAPE), which was found to be 0.61 and 2.99% for the area under rice in Odisha and India, respectively. Similarly for prediction of rice production and productivity in Odisha and India, the MAPE was found to be less than 6%.

Heavy metal concentrations in dried fishes collected from four fishing villages of Kerala, India, have been assessed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Overall, metal concentrations in dry fishes were in the decreasing order: Zn>Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd. Except Pb and Cr, other metals assessed were within permissible limits. Higher accumulation of Pb may be attributed to anthropogenic sources of metals that are persistent in the southwest coast of India, especially the Kerala coast, due to extensive industrialization, urbanization, fishing and port activities. Thirty-six species of dried fishes collected from Azhikode and Munambam zones were found to have more metal accumulations. The metal pollution assessment of dried fishes indicated that Pb and Cr concentrations are higher in the Kerala coast. Further studies must be carried out in more dried fish species and other preserved seafood to ensure that the dried fishes processed from these polluted coastal zones do not cause any harm to the consumers.

Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79 pb-1, D0 has searched for events containing multiple jets and large missing transverse energy in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Observing no significant excess beyond what is expected from the standard model, we set limits on the masses of squarks and gluinos and on the model parameters m_0 and m_1/2, in the framework of the minimal low-energy supergravity models of supersymmetry. For tan(beta) = 2 and A_0 = 0, with mu < 0, we exclude all models with m_squark < 250 GeV/c^2. For models with equal squark and gluino masses, we exclude m < 260 GeV/c^2., 10 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to PRL, Fixed typo on page bottom of p. 6 (QCD multijet background is 35.4 events)

Using the DO detector, we have observed events produced in (p) over barp collisions that contain W or Z bosons in conjunction with very little energy deposition ("rapidity gaps") in large forward regions of the detector. The fraction of W boson events with a rapidity gap (a signature for diffraction) is 0.89 +/- (0.19)(0.17)% and the probability that the non-diffractive background fluctuated to yield the observed diffractive signal is 3 x 10(-14), corresponding to a significance of 7.5 sigma. The Z boson sample has a gap fraction of 1.44 +/- (0.61)(0.52)%, with a significance of 4.4 sigma. The diffractive events have very similar properties to the more common non-diffractive component. We present a measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section at high dielectron invariant mass using 120/pb of data collected in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV by the D0 collaboration during 1992-96. No deviation from standard model expectations is observed. We use the data to set limits on the energy scale of quark-electron compositeness with common constituents. The 95% confidence level lower limits on the compositeness scale vary between 3.3 TeV and 6.1 TeV depending on the assumed form of the effective contact interaction., 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PRL

We report a search for effects of large extra spatial dimensions in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector, using events containing a pair of electrons or photons. The data are in good agreement with the expected background and do not exhibit evidence for large extra dimensions. We set the most restrictive lower limits to date, at the 95% confidence level, on the effective Planck scale between 1.0 TeV and 1.4 TeV for several formalisms and numbers of extra dimensions., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Inelastic cross sections have been measured for H, Be, C and Bi targets using proton beams at momenta of 58, 85 and 120 GeV/c using the MIPP experiment at Fermilab. The cross section dependence on the atomic weight (A) of the targets has been found to vary as A\(^{\alpha }\), where \(\alpha \) is 0.75 \(\pm \) 0.03 for a beam momentum of 58 GeV/c and 0.66 \(\pm \) 0.03 for 120 GeV/c. The MIPP data have been compared with the Monte Carlo (DPMJET/FLUKA) predictions and previous measurements. Inelastic cross sections have also been measured as a function of multiplicity for H and C targets using proton beams at different momenta. The DPMJET/FLUKA multiplicity shapes disagree with those of data. Inclusive charged pion production cross sections have also been measured in bins of true momentum for C target using 58 and 120 GeV/c proton beams, and compared with the FLUKA Monte Carlo.

Agriculture, one of the ancient occupations is considered as the backbone of any civilization across the countries. Development of agriculture and its technology has constantly evolved right from its origin. To increase agricultural productivity, people have started using pesticides. In ancient times, people used organic manures, however later, they have moved to synthetic/chemical pesticides, which are hazardous as well. The synthetic pesticides are not only harmful towards human beings but also to the environment. Among the available pesticides, paraquat (PQ) is one of the common herbicides used in agriculture. Usage of this herbicide leads to several life-threatening diseases and increases mortality rate. Therefore, quick, selective, and efficient detection of PQ in soil, water, and agro-products is very much essential to prevent its hazardous effects. In this perspective, several methods have been proposed in the literature for the detection of PQ using variety of catalysts. This review provides an insight on the detection of PQ using various analytical techniques including adsorption, spectrophotometric methods, chromatographic methods, and electrochemical methods etc. Further, it focuses on the different type of catalytic materials like metal nanoparticles, carbonaceous materials, and their composites, metals, polymers, and their roles during the determination of PQ. In addition, it analyses the effectiveness of the catalyst materials in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, real time monitoring in fruit juices like potato and apple juices, water samples etc., towards the detection of PQ.

We have searched for the signature of 3- and 4-body decays of pair-produced scalar top quarks (stop) in the inclusive final state containing an electron, a muon, and significant missing transverse energy using a sample of p p events corresponding to 108.3 pb−1 of data collected with the DO detector at Fermilab. The search is done in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model assuming that the neutralino ( χ 0 1 ) is the lightest supersymmetric particle and is stable. No evidence for a signal is found and we derive cross-section upper limits as a function of stop (t) and neutralino masses in different decay scenarios leading to the blν χ 0 1 final state.

Candida spp. are common opportunistic microorganisms in the human body and can cause mucosal, cutaneous, and systemic infections, mainly in individuals with weakened immune systems. Candida albicans is the most isolated and pathogenic species; however, multi-drug-resistant yeasts like Candida auris have recently been found in many different regions of the world. The increasing development of resistance to common antifungals by Candida species limits the therapeutic options. In light of this, the present review attempts to discuss the significance of marine natural products in controlling the proliferation and metabolism of C. albicans and non-albicans species. Natural compounds produced by sponges, algae, sea cucumber, bacteria, fungi, and other marine organisms have been the subject of numerous studies since the 1980s, with the discovery of several products with different chemical frameworks that can inhibit Candida spp., including antifungal drug-resistant strains. Sponges fall under the topmost category when compared to all other organisms investigated. Terpenoids, sterols, and alkaloids from this group exhibit a wide array of inhibitory activity against different Candida species. Especially, hippolide J, a pair of enantiomeric sesterterpenoids isolated from the marine sponge Hippospongia lachne, exhibited strong activity against Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, and Candida glabrata. In addition, a comprehensive analysis was performed to unveil the mechanisms of action and synergistic activity of marine products with conventional antifungals. In general, the results of this review show that the majority of chemicals derived from the marine environment are able to control particular functions of microorganisms belonging to the Candida genus, which can provide insights into designing new anti-candidal therapies.

Using the D empty set detector, we have studied events produced in (p) over barp collisions that contain large forward regions with very little energy deposition ("rapidity gaps") and concurrent jet production at center-of-mass energies of roots = 630 and 1800 GeV. The fraction of events with forward or central jets associated with rapidity gaps is compared to predictions for hard diffraction. We also extract the momentum loss for scattered protons in such processes. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy ("Sleuth") to search for new high p_T physics in approximately 100 pb^-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV collected by the DZero experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. We systematically analyze many exclusive final states and demonstrate sensitivity to a variety of models predicting new phenomena at the electroweak scale. No evidence of new high p_T physics is observed.

We report on a study of the ratio of inclusive three-jet to inclusive two-jet production cross sections as a function of total transverse energy in p (p) over bar collisions at it center-of-mass energy roots = 1.8 TeV, using data collected with the DO detector during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurements are used to deduce preferred renormalization scales in perturbative O(alpha (3)(s)) QCD calculations in modeling soft-jet emission.

We report a new measurement of the pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse-energy (Et) dependence of the inclusive jet production cross section in pbar b collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV using 95 pb**-1 of data collected with the DZero detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The differential cross section d^2sigma/dEt deta is presented up to |eta| = 3, significantly extending previous measurements. The results are in good overall agreement with next-to-leading order predictions from QCD and indicate a preference for certain parton distribution functions.

The D0 collaboration has performed a study of spin correlation in tt-bar production for the process tt-bar to bb-bar W^+W^-, where the W bosons decay to e-nu or mu-nu. A sample of six events was collected during an exposure of the D0 detector to an integrated luminosity of approximately 125 pb^-1 of sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV pp-bar collisions. The standard model (SM) predicts that the short lifetime of the top quark ensures the transmission of any spin information at production to the tt-bar decay products. The degree of spin correlation is characterized by a correlation coefficient k. We find that k>-0.25 at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the SM prediction of k=0.88.

This Letter describes a measurement of the muon cross section originating from b quark decay in the forward rapidity range 2.4 < y(mu) < 3.2 in pbarp collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The data used in this analysis were collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. We find that NLO QCD calculations underestimate b quark production by a factor of four in the forward rapidity region. A cross section measurement using muon+jet data has been included in this version of the paper.

We present a measurement of the transverse momentum distribution of Z bosons produced in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV using data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994--1996. We find good agreement between our data and a current resummation calculation. We also use our data to extract values of the non-perturbative parameters for a particular version of the resummation formalism, obtaining significantly more precise values than previous determinations.

We report on a search for second generation leptoquarks (LQ) produced in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.8 TeV using the DO detector at Fermilab. Second generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to either mu. or nu and either a strange or a charm quark (q). Limits an placed on sigma(p (p) over bar --> LQ --> mu nu + jets) as a function of the mass of the leptoquark. For equal branching ratios to mu q and nu q, second generation scalar leptoquarks with a mass below 160 GeV/c(2), vector leptoquarks with anomalous minimal vector couplings with a mass below 240 GeV/c(2), and vector leptoquarks with Yang-Mills couplings with a mass below 290 GeV/c(2), are excluded at the 95% confidence level.

We search for new physics using events with one high transverse energy photon, two or more jets, and an apparent imbalance in transverse energy, in p{ovr p} collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron at {radical} (s) =1.8 TeV . Such events are predicted for production of supersymmetric particles in some models. No excess is observed beyond expected background. For the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with branching fraction B({tilde {chi}}{sup 0}{sub 2}{r_arrow}{gamma}thinsp{tilde {chi}}{sup 0}{sub 1})=1 and m{sub {tilde {chi}}{sup 0}{sub 2 }}{minus}m{sub {tilde {chi}}{sup 0}{sub 1}}{gt}20 GeV , we obtain a 95{percent} confidence level lower mass limit of 310thinspthinspGeV for equal mass squarks and gluinos. The results are also interpreted in models with low energy gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society }

We report a measurement of the W boson mass based on an integrated luminosity of 82 pb −1 from pp collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV recorded in 1994-1995 by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We identify W bosons by their decays to e∨ V and extract the mass by fitting the transverse mass spectrum from 28 323 W boson candidates. A sample of 3563 dielectron events, mostly due to Z→ee decays, constrains models of W boson production and the detector. We measure M W = 80.44±0.10(stat)±0.07(syst) GeV. By combining this measurement with our result form the 1992-1993 data set, we obtain M W = 80.43±0.11 GeV.

We have searched for first generation scalar leptoquark (LQ) pairs in the enu+jets channel using ppbar collider data (integrated luminosity= 115 pb^-1) collected by the DZero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-96. The analysis yields no candidate events. We combine the results with those from the ee+jets and nunu+jets channels to obtain 95% confidence level (CL) upper limits on the LQ pair production cross section as a function of mass and of beta, the branching fraction to a charged lepton. Comparing with the next-to-leading order theory, we set 95% CL lower limits on the LQ mass of 225, 204, and 79 GeV/c^2 for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively.
