46. Ni-P SiC composite coatings on piston rings by plate and bumper technique and its tribological properties.

Abstract

Breakdown of piston rings in the automotive sector due to wear, corrosion and high temperatures is common. Conventional hard chrome and chrome ceramic coatings with hexavalent chromium possess environmental risks due to its carcinogenic effects. Nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) plating is not hazardous and hence silicon carbide (SiC) uniformly distributed in Ni-P coating by plate and bumper method is made as an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach. This Ni-P SiC composite coating provides high hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and improved friction resistance due to the uniform distribution of the SiC composite particles. The amorphous Ni-P coating is converted to nickel phosphide intermetallic crystalline form during the heat treatment at 300 °C and is confirmed by XRD. The heat treatment also increases the microhardness in the rage of 810 to 1015 HV for Ni-P SiC composite coating. This method significantly improved the mechanical properties of piston rings by ∼ 5 to 6%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Aluminum alloys are widely used in various automotive parts because of their high strength-to-weight ratio. However, their tribology properties, such as wear rate, are relatively high, resulting in a shorter life span than expected. Reconstructing the worn area using welding-based additive manufacturing (AM), such as wire arc AM, offers many advantages. However, heat may decrease the strength and hardness of the deposited material. This study intends to investigate the tribology properties of additive-manufactured aluminum alloy and their effects on mechanical deformation via cold forging. In this study, a reciprocating ball-on-flat test based on ASTM G133 is utilized. The additive-manufactured aluminum alloy ER5356 is studied based on three parameters, i.e. forged/unforged condition, speed, and load. In conclusion, cold forging improves the properties of the deposited material. Optimization using the Taguchi method and analysis of variance verifies that cold forging condition is the most significant parameter for the coefficient of friction and wear rate pattern. Abstract

Tissue engineering is an area in which new tissues or organs are replicated in a promising way to replace damaged tissues or organs caused by accidents and medical conditions. For cells to grow, a proper environment provided by scaffolds can imitate the composition of that original human extra cellular matrix (ECM). This study focuses on the preparation of Polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers using electrospinning approach. The effect of process parameters such as PCL concentration, flow rate and voltage supply on the architecture of microstructure was also studied. The diameter and porosity of the nanofibers were analyzed from images taken by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Beads were found in the electrospun scaffolds due to high humidity. The beads formation was reduced by adding PBS salt solution and increasing the distance of the collector plate from the needle tip. Further, electrospun nanofibers with larger diameters were by having higher PCL concentration, higher flow rate and lower voltage. This study suggests the importance of the control of humidity and process parameters during process electrospinning in the control of the microstructure of the electrospun scaffolds.
