Mold flux entrapment during continuous casting of steel contributes to both surface and sub-surface defects in the final product. Continuous casting operating parameters such as casting speed, SEN immersion depth, SEN port geometry, argon flow, and mold EMS significantly affect the mold flow conditions and flow profile. During continuous casting operation, SEN immersion depth is continuously varied to avoid localized erosion of SEN, and it impacts the flow dynamics in the mold. In the present work, water modeling studies were carried out for a wide range of mold widths (1200-1800 mm) and casting speeds (0.8-1.4 m/min) on a 0.5 scaled down water model to optimize casting speed for different combinations of SEN immersion depth and mold width. Results from water modeling were further validated using nail board studies in the actual plant. A safe operating matrix was identified from these experiments to avoid mold slag entrapment during continuous casting.

BACKGROUND Prevalence of diabetes in India is 9.1%. Diabetes and its complications are major causes of early death. According to International Diabetes Federation (IDF) approximately 5.1 million people aged between 20 and 79 years died from diabetes in 2013, accounting for 8.4% of global all-cause mortality among people in this age group. This estimated number of deaths is similar in magnitude to the combined deaths from several infectious diseases which are major public health priorities, and is equivalent to one death every six seconds. Diabetes imposes a large economic burden on individuals, families and national health system. The aim and objective of the study is to assess the risk factors of diabetes among diagnosed diabetic patients in field practice area of medical college in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. MATERIALS AND METHODS A community-based case control study was conducted in field practice area of medical college in Aurangabad during the period of July 2015 to October 2016. RESULTS High WHR (89% cases, 67.6% controls), high BMI (70.3% cases, 33.1% controls) were significantly associated with diabetes mellitus with a p< 0.05. Risk factors like inadequate physical activity (61.4% cases, 13.1% controls) and family history of DM (38.6% cases, 6.9% control) were also found to be significant. CONCLUSION Multiple Logistic Regression analysis showed that BMI, WHR, Family history of Diabetes and Physical inactivity were significantly associated with occurrence of Diabetes.

Background: Dengue fever is caused by an Arbovirus and spread by Aedes mosquitoes. Severity of disease ranges from Dengue haemorrhagic fever to dengue shock syndrome, which making it life threatening disease; hence an important public health concern. All the serotypes; Dengue 1- 4 have been isolated in India. Since 1 st evidence of dengue fever in 1956 from Vellore district of Tamilnadu, India. Objective of the study was to study epidemiological factors associated with fever outbreak. Methodology: All fever cases admitted at Government Medical College and Hospital Aurangabad during month of July and August from Aurangabad city was included in the study and 8 death cases during fever outbreak were studied in detail. Hospital records of all admitted fever cases were studied. Secondary data from Aurangabad Municipal Corporation and meteorological department were used to study serological and entomological parameters . Results: Fever outbreak was Dengue fever. Out of 308 cases studied in GMCH Aurangabad, 56 cases were NS1 positive. Maximum dengue cases (41%) were found in 11 to 20 year age group. Males were proportionally more affected (66%). HUDCO and CIDCO Area were most affected area (37.5%). Total 8 death cases out of 56 diagnosed cases were due to Dengue haemorrhagic fever/Dengue shock syndrome. Rainy season with increased breading of Aedes mosquito is responsible for spread of Dengue. Conclusion: Inter-sectorial coordination shall be improved, for water management and constructions in the city, to eliminate mosquitoes breeding sites. Aurangabad municipal corporation shall work together to improve public health care at Aurangabad. There is need of strengthening of disease surveillance system by notification of infectious diseases, establishment of peripheral health centers of municipal corporation of Aurangabad and orientation of medical officers in national integrated vector borne disease control programme. Monitoring committee comprising of experts from Medical colleges, Public Health services and administration of municipal corporation of Aurangabad shall be established to monitor control measures for various infectious diseases.

Background: The NFHS-3 data suggests that anaemia among adolescent Indian girls (15–19 years) is 56%. The control of anaemia in adolescent girls can be more easily achieved if a satisfactory iron status can be ensured in this important phase of life. This study estimated the prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls, their adherence and compliance to IFA and studied effect of IFA supplementation on haemoglobin level of adolescent girls. Methods: Community based cross-sectional study was carried out among 378 adolescent girls during June 2012 to May 2013 by house to house survey. All the relevant information was collected in predesigned proforma. The clinical examination, anthropometric examination and by Sahli’s haemoglobin meter, estimation of haemoglobin were done. Participants were given iron and folic supplementation for 45 days at the time of home visit and subsequently for another 45 days. Adherence to IFA was assessed through pill count. Results: Prevalence of anaemia in the adolescent girls was found to be 68.5%. Majority of girls were having mild anaemia. Before intervention the mean haemoglobin was 10.61±1.32 and after intervention it was 11.02±1.06 (p=0.001). Adherence to treatment was found in 85.19% of study participants. Conclusion: Prevalence of anaemia among adolescent females was high in rural study area. The declining trend was observed in grades of anaemia, there was conversion of moderate anaemia to mild anaemia and non-anaemia which was significant. The mean haemoglobin levels were increased after supplementation of IFA in study participants.

Background: India is currently experiencing rapid epidemiological transition with rising prevalence of obesity which may be due to increasing adoption of sedentary lifestyle and changing dietary pattern of the urban population. Certain occupations predispose individuals to sedentary lifestyles and some of these are white collar jobs characterized by sitting for long periods of time like financial institutions (banks). The aim and objectives of the study was to know the prevalence of obesity in bank employees and to study associated socioeconomic factors. Methods: A population based cross sectional study was conducted. Banks were listed according to sectors i.e. government, co-operative and private. The banks were selected randomly from these three sectors using stratified proportionate random sampling technique. The study participants were interviewed by the investigator with the help of predesigned proforma which included information about demographic & socio-economic data, medical and family history, clinical examination, and anthropometric measurements (height, weight, waist and hip circumference). Results: According to BMI classification for Asian population, 47.9% and 29.6% bank employees were found to be overweight and obese (GO) respectively. Whereas 65.0% bank employees had obesity by waist-hip ratio and only 6.25% bank employees had isolated generalized obesity. Overall 17.95% bank employees had isolated abdominal obesity and 44.6% bank employees had combined obesity. Conclusions: The prevalence of generalized as well abdominal obesity was very high among bank employees. The associated risk factors which were found to be significant were age, female gender, higher socioeconomic status, and higher employees’ posts.

Context: Since the gap between two atretic segments of oesophagus is a critical determinant of prognosis for oesophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF), the search for a surrogate non-invasive pre-operative marker of long gap atresia continues. Aims: The purpose of the study was to compare the presence of normal and supernumerary ribs with length of EA and survival rates. Settings and Design: A prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care referral neonatal intensive care unit in North Karnataka, India, from January 2016 to June 2019. Subjects and Methods: Amongst babies with EA/TEF, pre-operative radiograph helped determine the number of ribs, and babies were divided into two groups; Group I: babies with 12 ribs and Group II: babies with supernumerary ribs. Statistical Analysis Used: Nominal variables were expressed as percentage and continuous variables as mean standard deviation. MedCalc software was used to compare proportions and means. A P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 61 cases, 51 were operated. Long gap EA was predominantly seen amongst babies in Group II (40% in Group II vs. 27% in Group I, P = 0.424). Survival rates by percentage were lower in babies in Group II (60% in Group II vs. 80% in Group I, P = 0.188). Both the above findings were proven statistically insignificant. The overall survival rate amongst the study population was 78.4% (39/51). Conclusions: Supernumerary ribs were associated with a higher occurrence of long gap EA and lower survival rates, though statistically insignificant. Multicentre collaboration may provide significant input for strengthening or refuting the above hypothesis.
