Abstract

The ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors LIGO and Virgo have enabled the birth of multi-messenger GW astronomy via the detection of GWs from merging stellar-mass black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs). GW170817, the first binary NS merger detected in GWs and all bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, is an outstanding example of the impact that GW discoveries can have on multi-messenger astronomy. Yet, GW170817 is only one of the many and varied multi-messenger sources that can be unveiled using ground-based GW detectors. In this contribution, we summarize key open questions in the astrophysics of stellar-mass BHs and NSs that can be answered using current and future-generation ground-based GW detectors, and highlight the potential for new multi-messenger discoveries ahead., Comment: Review submitted to the Frontiers Research Topic "The Dynamic Universe: Realizing the Potential of Time Domain and Multimessenger Astrophysics"

2. Improved Upper Limits on Gravitational Wave Emission from NS 1987A in SNR 1987A

Abstract

We report on a new search for continuous gravitational waves from NS 1987A, the neutron star born in SN 1987A, using open data from Advanced LIGO and Virgo's third observing run (O3). The search covered frequencies from 35-1050 Hz, more than five times the band of the only previous gravitational wave search to constrain NS 1987A [B. J. Owen et al., ApJL 935, L7 (2022)]. It used an improved code and coherently integrated from 5.10 days to 14.85 days depending on frequency. No astrophysical signals were detected. By expanding the frequency range and using O3 data, this search improved on strain upper limits from the previous search and was sensitive at the highest frequencies to ellipticities of 1.6e-5 and r-mode amplitudes of 4.4e-4, both an order of magnitude improvement over the previous search and both well within the range of theoretical predictions., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

Gravitational-wave observations by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo have provided us a new tool to explore the Universe on all scales from nuclear physics to the cosmos and have the massive potential to further impact fundamental physics, astrophysics, and cosmology for decades to come. In this paper we have studied the science capabilities of a network of LIGO detectors when they reach their best possible sensitivity, called A#, given the infrastructure in which they exist and a new generation of observatories that are factor of 10 to 100 times more sensitive (depending on the frequency), in particular a pair of L-shaped Cosmic Explorer observatories (one 40 km and one 20 km arm length) in the US and the triangular Einstein Telescope with 10 km arms in Europe. The presence of one or two A# observatories in a network containing two or one next generation observatories, respectively, will provide good localization capabilities for facilitating multimessenger astronomy and precision measurement of the Hubble parameter. Two Cosmic Explorer observatories are indispensable for achieving precise localization of binary neutron star events, facilitating detection of electromagnetic counterparts and transforming multimessenger astronomy. Their combined operation is even more important in the detection and localization of high-redshift sources, such as binary neutron stars, beyond the star-formation peak, and primordial black hole mergers, which may occur roughly 100 million years after the Big Bang. The addition of the Einstein Telescope to a network of two Cosmic Explorer observatories is critical for accomplishing all the identified science metrics. For most metrics the triple network of next generation terrestrial observatories are a factor 100 better than what can be accomplished by a network of three A# observatories., Comment: 48 pages, 20 figures, 14 tables

4. First searches for gravitational waves from r-modes of the Crab pulsar

Abstract

We present the first searches for gravitational waves from r-modes of the Crab pulsar, coherently and separately integrating data from three stretches of the first two observing runs of Advanced LIGO using the F-statistic. The second run was divided in two by a glitch of the pulsar roughly halfway through. The frequencies and derivatives searched were based on radio measurements of the pulsar's spin-down parameters as described in Caride et al., Phys. Rev. D 100, 064013 (2019). We did not find any evidence of gravitational waves. Our best 90% confidence upper limits on gravitational wave intrinsic strain were 1.5e-25 for the first run, 1.3e-25 for the first stretch of the second run, and 1.1e-25 for the second stretch of the second run. These are the first upper limits on gravitational waves from r-modes of a known pulsar to beat its spin-down limit, and they do so by more than an order of magnitude in amplitude or two orders of magnitude in luminosity., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Searches for continuous gravitational waves from known pulsars so far have been targeted at or near the spin frequency or double the spin frequency of each pulsar, appropriate for mass quadrupole emission. But some neutron stars might radiate strongly through current quadrupoles via $r$-modes, which oscillate at about four thirds the spin frequency. We show for the first time how to construct searches over appropriate ranges of frequencies and spin-down parameters to target $r$-modes from known pulsars. We estimate computational costs and sensitivities of realistic $r$-mode searches using the coherent $\mathcal{F}$-statistic, and find that feasible searches for known pulsars can beat spin-down limits on gravitational wave emission even with existing LIGO and Virgo data., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

9. The Effect Of Preoperative Embolization On Surgical Outcomes Of Medial Sphenoid Wing Meningioma: A Comparative Study.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to compare the outcomes of patients undergoing surgery for medial sphenoid wing meningioma with or without preoperative embolization. Methods: This prospective single-centre observational study was performed over 2 years (1st August 2021 to 30th September 2023) at the National Neurosurgical Referral Centre, Bir Hospital. Patients were allocated to surgery with or without preoperative embolization. Results: Among the 20 patients operated, 17 were female and 3 were male. The mean age of presentation was 48.2±10.8 years. The presenting symptoms were headache (50%), Visual disturbances (19%), proptosis (9%), seizure (13%), and dizziness (22%). Of the 20 patients in this study, 10 underwent prior embolization of the feeding vessel followed by surgery while 10 underwent upfront craniotomy and excision of mass. The tumor size at presentation was < 3cm in 25%, 3-4 cm in 60%, and >4 cm in 15%. The mean operative time was short in the embolized group [187min vs 234min,(p=0.047)]. The mean blood loss was less in the embolized group 295 ml vs 436 ml p =0.005). Preoperative embolization had a higher rate of gross total tumor resection (100% vs 60 %). The embolization group had a shorter overall hospital stay(5.6 days vs 8.6 days). There is no mortality. However, increased morbidity was observed in the non-embolized group. Conclusions: The preoperative endovascular embolization of meningiomas is a safe option for medial sphenoid wing meningiomas. The extent of tumor resection, intraoperative blood loss and hospital stay was better in the embolization group compared to the nonembolization group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cavernous malformation of brainstem is at increased risk of hemorrhage compared to supratentorial cavernomas. Increased morbidity associated with brainstem cavernoma(BCs) is defined by the inherent eloquence of the surrounding structures. At present watchful waiting, microsurgical resection and gamma knife surgery are the treatment modalities for symptomatic brainstem cavernoma. However, in the resource limited settings microsurgical excision by selecting an appropriate corridor can help in gross total removal in the meantime improving the neurological deficit and patient satisfaction. Abstract

We report on a new all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 475-2000 Hz and with a frequency time derivative in the range of [-1.0,+0.1]×10-8 Hz/s. Potential signals could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly nonaxisymmetric isolated neutron star in our Galaxy. This search uses the data from Advanced LIGO's first observational run O1. No gravitational-wave signals were observed, and upper limits were placed on their strengths. For completeness, results from the separately published low-frequency search 20-475 Hz are included as well. Our lowest upper limit on worst-case (linearly polarized) strain amplitude h0 is ∼4×10-25 near 170 Hz, while at the high end of our frequency range, we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 1.3×10-24. For a circularly polarized source (most favorable orientation), the smallest upper limit obtained is ∼1.5×10-25. © 2018 American Physical Society.

42. Malignant metastatic melanoma in brain with unknown primary origin: a case report.

Abstract

Introduction: Melanoma, a malignant tumor derived from neural crest melanocytes, predominantly affects the skin but can involve any organ with neural crest migration. Metastatic melanoma of unknown origin, particularly when it involves the brain, is associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and a typically poor prognosis., Case Presentation: The authors present a 71-year-old man with a history of hypertension and seizure disorder who experienced a headache, transient loss of consciousness, and vomiting. Imaging revealed a mass with perilesional edema in the right temporal, right occipital, left frontal, and left periventricular regions. A craniotomy and excision of the right temporal lesion confirmed malignant metastatic melanoma through histological examination. Despite normal findings in skin, mucosal, anogenital, and ophthalmological examinations, and a comprehensive CT scan of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis that revealed no primary tumor, the diagnosis of metastatic melanoma of unknown origin was made. The patient did not receive treatment due to financial constraints., Clinical Discussion: About 2-6% of melanoma patients present with tumors of unknown primary origin. Brain metastases occur in ~60% of advanced melanoma cases and carry a high risk of spontaneous bleeding. While traditional survival rates are low, surgical resection, stereotactic radiosurgery, immunotherapy, and BRAF/MEK inhibitors can improve outcomes., Conclusion: Headaches, lethargy, vomiting, and altered sensorium should prompt investigation for brain metastases from melanoma, even without a detectable primary tumor. Treatment strategies including immunotherapy and stereotactic surgery aim for a median survival of 8-10 months. Abstract

Documented re-infection of COVID-19 is uncommon and doing a major spinal surgery in an elderly patient right after the recovery from the first event is itself a major undertaking. Re-infection after successful surgery points to the possibility of COVID-19 infection being a post-surgical complication. Here, we report a case of a 72-years-old elderly female who had presented to us with features of COVID-19 infection confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay and unstable spinal fracture who underwent a pedicle screw fixation for the fracture of the third and fourth thoracic vertebrae after two consecutive negative serology assays. A month after discharge from the hospital, she presented with severe symptoms of COVID-19 again confirmed by two consecutive polymerase chain reaction assays. She was managed conservatively and was discharged without significant respiratory and neurological complications. We described this case in detail in addition to reviewing the pertinent literature.

Abstract

Chordoma is a rare and locally aggressive tumor that arises from the notochordal remnants and has an incidence of 0.1/100000 per year. It has a predilection for the axial skeleton and is the most common primary malignant tumor of sacrum. The mainstay of treatment is wide surgical excision but there is a risk of recurrence due to the infiltrating nature of the tumor. Here, we report a case of a 56-years male who complained of pain over his sacral region for the past two years along with episodic urinary symptoms, constipation, and weakness of both legs. Seven years after undergoing surgery and radiotherapy for his sacral chordoma, he was diagnosed with recurrent sacral chordoma and planned for reoperation. Subtotal excision of the chordoma was done which significantly alleviated his symptoms postoperatively. Timely intervention helps to improve the quality of life in patients with either primary or recurrent sacral chordomas.
