Blast disease causes significant damage to millets (pearl millet, finger millet and foxtail millet) and rice in India. This study investigates strains of Pyricularia, the causal agent of blast disease, in rice and millets in India in terms of their diversity, host preferences and phylogeny. One hundred and thirty‐six Pyricularia isolates causing rice and millet blast were collected from 46 locations in India. They displayed morphological diversity irrespective of host or location. All Pyricularia isolates were separated into two major clusters by a multilocus sequence‐based phylogenetic tree, which also demonstrated that most isolates are grouped according to their host associations. In contrast, a few finger millet isolates were found to be grouped with foxtail millet isolates. We explored how Pyricularia isolates behaved when exposed to rice and millets. Finger millet isolates were shown to be pathogenic on a wide variety of millets, whereas rice isolates were only found to infect rice and wheat. The majority of the blast isolates of millets were shown to be pathogenic on common weed species of the millet ecosystem, such as Echinochloa crusgalli, Eleusina indica and Erogrotis gagantica. Our findings emphasize the importance of pathogen surveillance in both cultivated crops and weed hosts, as well as the possible risk of blast fungus infection in Indian millets due to host expansion. Knowledge on the genetics of maydis leaf blight (MLB) is crucial to breed the resistant maize cultivars to combat disease epidemics as a sustainable and cost-effective approach. The present investigation was framed to understand the genetics of MLB resistance in subtropical maize. Two contrasting genotypes CM119 (susceptible) and SC-7-2-1-2-6-1 (resistant) were used to generate six genetic populations, namely P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1P1 and BC1P2, and evaluated in three target environments for MLB resistance under artificial epiphytotic condition. The CM119 and SC-7-2-1-2-6-1 showed susceptible and resistant reactions with mean disease reaction of 3.89–3.98 and 1.88–2.00, respectively. The derived generations, namely F1, F2, BC1P1 and BC1P2 showed mean disease reaction of 2.15–2.28, 2.44–2.51, 2.19–2.24 and 2.22–2.28, respectively in the test locations. The segregating generations (F2: 0.35–0.37; BC1P1: 0.24–0.29 and BC1P2: 0.17–0.20) showed variation for MLB disease resistance over the parental and first filial generations (P1: 0.11–0.17; P2: 0.08–0.13 and F1: 0.12–0.14). The genetic analysis of MLB resistance revealed the nonallelic interactions of duplicate epistasis type across the test locations. Among the gene interactions, dominance × dominance [l] effect was predominant over additive × additive [i] and additive × dominance [j] effects. The segregation analysis and the prediction of the number of major loci revealed at least two major genes associated with MLB tolerance in subtropical maize. Magnaporthe oryzae, the rice blast fungus, is one of the most dangerous rice pathogens, causing considerable crop losses around the world. In order to explore the rice blast-resistant sources, initially performed a large-scale screening of 277 rice accessions. In parallel with field evaluations, fifty-two rice accessions were genotyped for 25 major blast resistance genes utilizing functional/gene-based markers based on their reactivity against rice blast disease. According to the phenotypic examination, 29 (58%) and 22 (42%) entries were found to be highly resistant, 18 (36%) and 29 (57%) showed moderate resistance, and 05 (6%) and 01 (1%), respectively, were highly susceptible to leaf and neck blast. The genetic frequency of 25 major blast resistance genes ranged from 32 to 60%, with two genotypes having a maximum of 16 R-genes each. The 52 rice accessions were divided into two groups based on cluster and population structure analysis. The highly resistant and moderately resistant accessions are divided into different groups using the principal coordinate analysis. According to the analysis of molecular variance, the maximum diversity was found within the population, while the minimum diversity was found between the populations. Two markers (RM5647 and K39512), which correspond to the blast-resistant genes Pi36 and Pik, respectively, showed a significant association to the neck blast disease, whereas three markers (Pi2-i, Pita3, and k2167), which correspond to the blast-resistant genes Pi2, Pita/Pita2, and Pikm, respectively, showed a significant association to the leaf blast disease. The associated R-genes might be utilized in rice breeding programmes through marker-assisted breeding, and the identified resistant rice accessions could be used as prospective donors for the production of new resistant varieties in India and around the world.
