Some of the most impressive achievements of contemporary Machine Learning systems comes from the GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) structure. DALLE-2 and GPT- 3, two of the most impressive and recognizable feats of ML in recent years, were both trained using adversarial techniques. The world of Quantum Computing is already well aware of the value of such techniques on near-term Quantum Hardware: QGANs provide a highly efficient method for loading classical data into a quantum state. We investigate the performance of these techniques in an attempt to determine some of the optimal training parameters in a Qiskit-style Parameterized Circuit QGAN framework.

Key properties of physical systems can be described by the eigenvalues of matrices that represent the system. Computational algorithms that determine the eigenvalues of these matrices exist, but they generally suffer from a loss of performance as the matrix grows in size. This process can be expanded to quantum computation to find the eigenvalues with better performance than the classical algorithms. One application of such an eigenvalue solver is to determine energy levels of a molecule given a matrix representation of its Hamiltonian using the variational principle. Using a variational quantum eigensolver, we determine the ground state energies of different molecules. We focus on the choice of optimization strategy for a Qiskit simulator on low-end hardware. The benefits of several different optimizers were weighed in terms of accuracy in comparison to an analytic classical solution as well as code efficiency.

We perform an experimental study of DC current induced microwave emission in a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) consisting of three active magnetic layers. For this tri-layer structure, in addition to a conventional bilayer orthogonal MTJ containing a perpendicular free layer and an in-plane fixed layer, a second perpendicular layer has been introduced. We found that the microwave emission frequency induced by spin-transfer torque (STT) can reach as high as 6 GHz in the absence of any applied magnetic field. Moreover, microwave emission is observed for both current polarizations where a redshift is seen with increase in magnitude of current. We discuss spin-dynamics of the observed bi-directional high-frequency emission and the physical origin of the red-shift. The distinct microwave emission properties exhibited in this tri-layer MTJ structure could potentially be useful for future applications in nanoscale spintronics devices such as microwave communication and neuromorphic computing., Comment: manuscript and supporting information together

Zirconium and its alloys are extensively used as cladding material in nuclear reactors. They are vulnerable to hydrogen degradation under the harsh service conditions of the reactors, which necessitates continuous monitoring for the hydride concentration. The presence of hydride denuded zones in the latter stages of the pressure tube's life hinders the monitoring process, which is carried out by scrape samples taken from the surface of pressure tubes. We investigated the effect of oxygen on diffusivity of hydrogen in hcp-Zr, to check the hypothesis that oxygen slows the diffusion of hydrogen and thereby encourages the occurrence of hydride denuded zones. From the study we found that oxygen indeed decreases the diffusivity of hydrogen in hcp-Zr for moderate O concentrations, supporting the hypothesis. We investigated the diffusion processes of individual H atoms, which showed that the reduction in diffusivity is caused by a decrease in the hopping rates and the formation of hydrogen traps by the combination of several interstitial sites.

Which systems are ideal to obtain negative refraction with no absorption? Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is a method to suppress absorption and make a material transparent to a field of a given frequency. Such a system has been discussed in [1]; however the main limitations for negative refraction introduced are the necessity of resonant electric and magnetic dipole transitions, and the necessity of very dense media. We suggest using frequency translators in a composite system that would provide negative refraction for a range of optical frequencies while attempting to overcome the limitations discussed above. We model single photon nonlinearities resulting from the dipole-dipole interactions of cold polar molecules. We propose utilizing ``dark state polaritons'' to effectively couple photon and molecular states; through this framework, coherent control of the nonlinearity can be expressed and potentially used in an optical quantum computation architecture. Due to the dipole-dipole interaction the photons pick up a measurable nonlinear phase even in the single photon regime. A manifold of protected symmetric eigenstates is used as basis. Depending on the implementation, major sources of decoherence result from non-symmetric interactions and phonon dispersion.
