Abstract

The coconut-based agricultural wastes have gained wide attention as an alternative adsorbent for the removal of diverse pollutants from the industrial effluents. This paper presents the zinc chloride activation of adsorbent carbon and the utilization as an adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solution. The characterisation of activated carbon was performed to get an insight into the adsorption mechanism. The ZnCl2 activated carbon acquired a higher specific surface area (544.66 m2 g−1) and stability (−32.6 mV). The impact of process parameters including contact time (20–220 min) and initial dye concentration (20–80 mg L−1) were evaluated on the effectiveness of activated carbon for dye removal. The results concluded that zinc chloride activated carbon showed a significant dye adsorption (39.683 mg g−1) at an initial concentration of 20 mg L−1 after 3 hours. Based on the correlation coefficient (R2), the Freundlich isotherm model (0.978–0.998) was best fitted for the experimental data followed by the intraparticle diffusion model (0.88–0.929) as the most appropriate model for malachite green dye removal. Additionally, the energy and thermogravimetric analysis portrayed the suitability of the carbon material to be used as an energy alternative to coal.

15. Calcium carbonate activated biomass-derived carbon: insights on characterization and adsorption.

Abstract

Activated carbon made from coconut (Cocos nucifera) shells has the potential to be a valuable source for removing pollutants from wastewater. Recently, the use of calcium carbonate to activate carbon materials derived from agricultural waste has been gaining attention as an effective method for adsorption in wastewater treatment. In the present study, we have analysed the structural and functional properties of activated coconut shell biochar. Results show that calcium carbonate-activated carbon had a maximum adsorption capacity of 40.35 mg g-1 after 3 h of equilibrium when tested with 20 mg l-1 of malachite dye. The R2 value for this activated carbon was 0.822, and the best-fit model was determined to be pseudo-second-order kinetics, with intraparticle diffusion being the final rate-limiting step. Abstract

In modern days Multi Level Inverters (MLIs) in the power industry receive a large interest. The MLIs with multilevel structures produces higher-power, higher-voltage inverters. Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) has become a popular one. It has been utilized widely studied during the past several decades for multilevel inverters as it has many merits like lesser switching losses and lesser Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). However, many researchers have failed to reduce the selective harmonic elimination time consumption and improve efficiency. A novel Tournament Selected Glowworm Swarm Optimization-Based Selective Harmonic Elimination (TSGWSO-SHE) approach is proposed in this paper for addressing these problems. The major aim of the TSGWSO-SHE approach is selecting optimal switching angles for removing the lower order harmonics. In the TSGWSO-SHE technique, initially, multilevel-inverters are created, and the modulation index is measured. Based on the modulation index, Switching Angles (SAs) are determined. Then several switching angles are initialized randomly. The objective function is determined for every switching angle. Using it detects and chooses the neighbouring switching angle with higher brightness by tournament selection and move to it. Lastly, the switching angle updates its position and finds the optimal switching angle. In this way, an optimal SA is selected during the process of selective harmonic eradication in MLI with higher efficiency and minimal time consumption. The efficiency of TSGWSO-SHE technique is simulated using parameters such as time of SHE, SHE efficiency and THD. Results prove that the proposed TSGWSO-SHE technique provides better SHE performance as compared to the existing studies. Experimental results demonstrate that the TSGWSO-SHE technique reduces the THD and SHE time by 46% and 33%, and the efficiency of selective harmonic elimination is increased by 13% compared to existing methods.

Abstract

Activated carbon produced from coconut shells has been gaining interest in wastewater treatment as a potential carbon source for adsorption with desired porosity, surface area, and stability requirements. Acid activation has been preferred for activated carbon production due to its superiority over adsorption of malachite green dye. This study involved in the acid activation of coconut shell derived carbon and its characterisation was performed to study the surface functionalities, thermal stability, textural and structural morphologies. The activated carbon was used for the adsorption of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions and with a special insight by varying contact time (20–220 min) and initial dye concentration (20–80 mg L−1) for adsorption study. Phosphoric acid-activated carbon has shown maximum adsorption capacity (Xm) of 32.787 mg g−1 at initial malachite dye concentration of 20 mg L−1 after 3 hours. Abstract

The buck converter is one of the DC/DC converters that are often used as power supplies and high energy conversion. These controllers are used in electronic devices to regulate the output voltage against change in the input voltage and load current. This leads to the requirement of an efficient control methodology to meet real-time demand. It is found in many works of literature that satisfactory performance in buck converter's dynamic behavior using genetic algorithm controlling techniques, but the appearance of the transient with large overshoots and the ripple output voltage is not focused. The main reason for such a problem is the improper selection of capacitance values. In this work, to address such issues, along with the PID controller gain values and capacitance selection also be considered in multi-objective problems. The optimization is carried out using the NSGA-II and modified NSGA-II algorithm. This paper also presents a comparison of these algorithms' performance in terms of time-domain specifications and ripple voltage. Simulated outputs exhibit that the controller based on MNSGA-II for buck converter gives better performance than NSGA-II-based controller and results compared with the existing wok. Abstract

As per the World Health Organization (WHO), 285 million people are visually impaired of whom 39 million are completely blind. Though there exist enough remedies to the problems of assisting individuals who are visually impaired to read, there is a requirement for an intelligent text reader which is economical, accurate and easily accessible in order to help them read for day to day activities. This paper proposes an intelligent text reader using python. This product is built on a Raspberry Pi module connected with camera that is used to capture the input image. The input image is enhanced using Image processing techniques. The Tesseract OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engine embedded in the Raspberry Pi searches for the text in an improved image and converts it into digital document. The digital document is then analyzed using semantic check module. After the analysis, text is converted to speech by a Python based TTS (text to speech) conversion unit embedded in the Raspberry Pi. Finally, the audio output is given to the Audio Amplifier for it to be read out.

Abstract

Background & objectives: The biological spectrum of leptospirosis ranges from acute undifferentiated febrile illness to severe fatal syndrome or a combination of syndromes. Diagnosis on clinical grounds alone is difficult and depends on laboratory support. However, no confirmatory tests are available, which is rapid and can be performed with minimum facilities available. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the diagnostic utility, accuracy and reproducibility of a rapid real time-PCR based method (TruenatTM) for early diagnosis of leptospirosis, and its usage in low resource settings. Methods: The Truenat™ test was performed using plasma sample collected from confirmed patients and controls. DNA was extracted from plasma samples and the reaction was performed as per the manufacturer's instructions. Leptospiral isolates were also used to assess the performance using different serovars. Results: Evaluation of the Truenat™ test with RT-PCR as the gold standard showed that Truenat™ had a sensitivity of 97.4 per cent and a specificity of 98.6 per cent. The overall agreement with RT-PCR was 98.2 per cent. Interpretation & conclusions: Our results showed that the test would be a useful tool for early diagnosis of leptospirosis in settings with minimal facilities and the test results could be obtained within an hour. Taking into consideration the high importance of the drug target 5-α-reductase (5αR) in prostate cancer in this work we are going first to review previous works and discuss works related to the computer aided drug design of 5αR inhibitors. We report new results in the in silico screening of natural 5αR inhibitors. Traditionally, drugs were discovered by testing compounds synthesized in time consuming multi-step processes against a battery of in vivo biological screens. Promising compounds were then further studied in development, where their pharmacokinetic properties, metabolism and potential toxicity were investigated. Here we present a study on herbal lead compounds and their potential binding affinity to the effectors molecules of major disease like Prostate Cancer. Clinical studies demonstrate a positive correlation between the extent of 5αR type 2 (5αR2) and malignant progression of precancerous lesions in prostate. Therefore, identification of effective, well-tolerated 5αR inhibitors represents a rational chemo preventive strategy. This study has investigated the effects of naturally occurring non-protein compounds berberine and monocaffeyltartaric acid that inhibits 5αR type2. Our results reveal that these compounds use less energy to bind to 5αR and inhibit its activity. Their high ligand binding affinity to 5αR introduce the prospect for their use in chemopreventive applications; in addition they are freely available natural compounds that can be safely used to prevent prostate cancer.
