We report and discuss phase-shift and phase travel time of low-frequency ({\nu} < 5.0 mHz) acoustic waves estimated within the photosphere and photosphere-chromosphere interface regions, utilizing multi-height velocities in the quiet Sun. The bisector method has been employed to estimate seven height velocities in the photosphere within the Fe I 6173 {\AA} line scan, while nine height velocities are estimated from the chromospheric Ca II 8542 {\AA} line scan observations obtained from the Narrow Band Imager instrument installed with the Multi-Application Solar Telescope operational at the Udaipur Solar Observatory, India. Utilizing fast Fourier transform at each pixel over the full field-of-view, phase shift and coherence have been estimated. The frequency and height-dependent phase shift integrated over the regions having an absolute line-of-sight magnetic field of less than 10 G indicates the non-evanescent nature of low-frequency acoustic waves within the photosphere and photosphere-chromosphere interface regions. Phase travel time estimated within the photosphere shows non-zero values, aligning with previous simulations and observations. Further, we report that the non-evanescent nature persists beyond the photosphere, encompassing the photospheric-chromospheric height range. We discuss possible factors contributing to the non-evanescent nature of low-frequency acoustic waves. Additionally, our observations reveal a downward propagation of high-frequency acoustic waves, indicating the refraction from higher layers in the solar atmosphere. HISPEC is a new, high-resolution near-infrared spectrograph being designed for the W.M. Keck II telescope. By offering single-shot, R=100,000 between 0.98 - 2.5 um, HISPEC will enable spectroscopy of transiting and non-transiting exoplanets in close orbits, direct high-contrast detection and spectroscopy of spatially separated substellar companions, and exoplanet dynamical mass and orbit measurements using precision radial velocity monitoring calibrated with a suite of state-of-the-art absolute and relative wavelength references. MODHIS is the counterpart to HISPEC for the Thirty Meter Telescope and is being developed in parallel with similar scientific goals. In this proceeding, we provide a brief overview of the current design of both instruments, and the requirements for the two spectrographs as guided by the scientific goals for each. We then outline the current science case for HISPEC and MODHIS, with focuses on the science enabled for exoplanet discovery and characterization. We also provide updated sensitivity curves for both instruments, in terms of both signal-to-noise ratio and predicted radial velocity precision., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures. The distribution and evolution of photospheric magnetic field in sunspots, plages and network, and variations in their relative flux content, play key roles in radial velocity (RV) fluctuations observed in Sun-as-a-star spectra. Differentiating and disentangling such magnetic contributions to RVs help in building models to account for stellar activity signals in high precision RV exoplanet searches. In this work, as earlier authors, we employ high-resolution images of the solar magnetic field and continuum intensities from SDO/HMI to understand the activity contributions to RVs from HARPS-N solar observations. Using well observed physical relationships between strengths and fluxes of photospheric magnetic fields, we show that the strong fields (spots, plages and network) and the weak internetwork fields leave distinguishing features in their contributions to the RV variability. We also find that the fill-factors and average unsigned magnetic fluxes of different features correlate differently with the RVs and hence warrant care in employing either of them as a proxy for RV variations. In addition, we examine disk averaged UV intensities at 1600 \r{A} and 1700 \r{A} wavelength bands imaged by SDO/AIA and their performances as proxies for variations in different magnetic features. We find that the UV intensities provide a better measure of contributions of plage fields to RVs than the Ca II H-K emission indices, especially during high activity levels when the latter tend to saturate., Comment: 18 pages (preprint format), 14 figures. ADITYA-L1 is India's first dedicated mission to observe the sun and its atmosphere from a halo orbit around L1 point. Visible emission line coronagraph (VELC) is the prime payload on board at Aditya-L1 to observe the sun's corona. VELC is designed as an internally occulted reflective coronagraph to meet the observational requirements of wide wavelength band and close to the solar limb (1.05 Ro). Images of the solar corona in continuum and spectra in three emission lines 5303{\AA} [Fe xiv], 7892{\AA} [Fe xi] and 10747 [Fe xiii] obtained with high cadence to be analyzed using software algorithms automatically. A reasonable part of observations will be made in synoptic mode, those, need to be analyzed and results made available for public use. The procedure involves the calibration of instrument and detectors, converting the images into fits format, correcting the images and spectra for the instrumental effects, align the images etc. Then, develop image processing algorithms to detect the occurrence of energetic events using continuum images. Also derive physical parameters, such as temperature and velocity structure of solar corona using emission line observations. Here, we describe the calibration of detectors and the development of software algorithms to detect the occurrence of CMEs and analyze the spectroscopic data.

The goal of helioseismology is to provide accurate information about the Sun's interior from the observations of the wave field at its surface. In the last three decades, both global and local helioseismology studies have made significant advances and breakthroughs in solar physics. However, 3-d mapping of the structure and dynamics of sunspots and active regions below the surface has been a challenging task and are among the longest standing and intriguing puzzles of solar physics due to the complexity of the turbulent and dynamic nature of sunspots. Thus the key problems that need to be addressed during the next decade are: (i) Understanding the wave excitation mechanisms in the quiet Sun and magnetic regions, (ii) Characterizing the wave propagation and transformation in strong and inclined magnetic field regions and understanding the magnetic portals in the chromosphere, (iii) Improving helioseismology techniques and investigating the whole life cycle of active regions, from magnetic flux emergence to dissipation, and (iv) Detecting helioseismic signature of the magnetic flux of active regions before it becomes visible on the surface so as to provide warnings several days before the emergence. For a transformative progress on these problems require full disk, simultaneous Doppler and vector magnetic field measurements of the photosphere up to the chromosphere with a spatial resolution of about 2 arc-sec as well as large-scale radiative MHD simulations of the plasma dynamics from the sub-photosphere to the chromosphere., Comment: A White Paper Submitted to the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) -- SSPH 2024-2033

Gravity waves are generated by turbulent subsurface convection overshooting or penetrating locally into a stably stratified medium. While propagating energy upwards, their characteristic negative phase shift over height is a well-recognized observational signature. Since their first detailed observational detection and estimates of energy content, a number of studies have explored their propagation characteristics and interaction with magnetic fields and other wave modes in the solar atmosphere. Here, we present a study of the atmospheric gravity wave dispersion diagrams utilizing intensity observations that cover photospheric to chromospheric heights over different magnetic configurations of quiet-Sun (magnetic network regions), a plage, and a sunspot as well as velocity observations within the photospheric layer over a quiet and a sunspot region. In order to investigate the propagation characteristics, we construct two-height intensity - intensity and velocity-velocity cross-spectra and study phase and coherence signals in the wavenumber-frequency dispersion diagrams and their association with background magnetic fields. We find signatures of association between magnetic fields and much reduced coherence and phase shifts over height from intensity-intensity and velocity-velocity phase and coherence diagrams, both indicating suppression/scattering of gravity waves by the magnetic fields. Our results are consistent with the earlier numerical simulations, which indicate that gravity waves are suppressed or scattered and reflected back into the lower solar atmosphere in the presence of magnetic fields., Comment: 19 pages, 19 Figures, Accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research journal

In this work, we present a study of the propagation of low-frequency magneto-acoustic waves into the solar chromosphere within small-scale inclined magnetic fields over a quiet-magnetic network region utilizing near-simultaneous photospheric and chromospheric Dopplergrams obtained from the HMI instrument onboard SDO spacecraft and the Multi-Application Solar Telescope (MAST) operational at the Udaipur Solar Observatory, respectively. Acoustic waves are stochastically excited inside the convection zone of the Sun and intermittently interact with the background magnetic fields resulting into episodic signals. In order to detect these episodic signals, we apply the wavelet transform technique to the photospheric and chromospheric velocity oscillations in magnetic network regions. The wavelet power spectrum over photospheric and chromospheric velocity signals show a one-to-one correspondence between the presence of power in the 2.5-4 mHz band. Further, we notice that power in the 2.5-4 mHz band is not consistently present in the chromospheric wavelet power spectrum despite its presence in the photospheric wavelet power spectrum. This indicates that leakage of photospheric oscillations (2.5-4 mHz band) into the higher atmosphere is not a continuous process. The average phase and coherence spectra estimated from these photospheric and chromospheric velocity oscillations illustrate the propagation of photospheric oscillations (2.5-4 mHz) into the solar chromosphere along the inclined magnetic fields. We report on a study of the Multiview Observatory for Solar Terrestrial Science (MOST) mission that will provide comprehensive imagery and time series data needed to understand the magnetic connection between the solar interior and the solar atmosphere/inner heliosphere. MOST will build upon the successes of SOHO and STEREO missions with new views of the Sun and enhanced instrument capabilities. This article is based on a study conducted at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center that determined the required instrument refinement, spacecraft accommodation, launch configuration, and flight dynamics for mission success. MOST is envisioned as the next generation great observatory positioned to obtain three-dimensional information of large-scale heliospheric structures such as coronal mass ejections, stream interaction regions, and the solar wind itself. The MOST mission consists of 2 pairs of spacecraft located in the vicinity of Sun-Earth Lagrange points L4 (MOST1, MOST3) and L5 (MOST2 and MOST4). The spacecraft stationed at L4 (MOST1) and L5 (MOST2) will each carry seven remote-sensing and three in-situ instrument suites, including a novel radio package known as the Faraday Effect Tracker of Coronal and Heliospheric structures (FETCH). MOST3 and MOST4 will carry only the FETCH instruments and are positioned at variable locations along the Earth orbit up to 20{\deg} ahead of L4 and 20{\deg} behind L5, respectively. FETCH will have polarized radio transmitters and receivers on all four spacecraft to measure the magnetic content of solar wind structures propagating from the Sun to Earth using the Faraday rotation technique. We study a blowout jet that occurs at the west limb of the Sun on August 29$^{th}$, 2014 using high-resolution imaging/spectroscopic observations provided by SDO/AIA and IRIS. An inverse $\gamma$-shape flux-rope appears before the jet{--} morphological indication of the onset of kink instability. The twisted field lines of kink-unstable flux-rope reconnect at its bright knot and launch the blowout jet at $\approx$06:30:43 UT with an average speed of 234 km s$^{-1}$. Just after the launch, the northern leg of the flux rope erupts completely. The time-distance diagrams show multiple spikes or bright dots, which is the result of periodic fluctuations, i.e., quasi-periodic fluctuations (QPPs). The wavelet analysis confirms that QPPs have a dominant period of $\approx$ 03 minutes. IRIS spectra (Si~{\sc iv}, C~{\sc ii}, and Mg~{\sc ii}) may also indicate the occurrence of magnetic reconnection through existence of broad $\&$ complex profiles and bi-directional flows in the jet. Further, we have found that line broadening is periodic with a period of $\approx$ 03 minutes, and plasma upflow is always occurs when the line width is high, i.e., multiple reconnection may produce periodic line broadening. The EM curves also show the same period of $\approx$ 03 minutes in different temperature bins. The images and EM show that this jets spire is mainly cool (chromospheric/transition region) rather than hot (coronal) material. Further, line broadening, intensity, and EM curves have a period of $\approx$03 minutes, which strongly supports that multiple magnetic reconnection triggers QPPs in the blowout jet., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal (In press), 25 pages, 12 figures

Solar pores are efficient magnetic conduits for propagating magnetohydrodynamic wave energy into the outer regions of the solar atmosphere. Pore observations often contain isolated and/or unconnected structures, preventing the statistical examination of wave activity as a function of atmospheric height. Here, using high resolution observations acquired by the Dunn Solar Telescope, we examine photospheric and chromospheric wave signatures from a unique collection of magnetic pores originating from the same decaying sunspot. Wavelet analysis of high cadence photospheric imaging reveals the ubiquitous presence of slow sausage mode oscillations, coherent across all photospheric pores through comparisons of intensity and area fluctuations, producing statistically significant in-phase relationships. The universal nature of these waves allowed an investigation of whether the wave activity remained coherent as they propagate. Utilizing bi-sector Doppler velocity analysis of the Ca II 8542 {\AA} line, alongside comparisons of the modeled spectral response function, we find fine-scale 5 mHz power amplification as the waves propagate into the chromosphere. Phase angles approaching zero degrees between co-spatial bi-sectors spanning different line depths indicate standing sausage modes following reflection against the transition region boundary. Fourier analysis of chromospheric velocities between neighboring pores reveals the annihilation of the wave coherency observed in the photosphere, with examination of the intensity and velocity signals from individual pores indicating they behave as fractured wave guides, rather than monolithic structures. Importantly, this work highlights that wave morphology with atmospheric height is highly complex, with vast differences observed at chromospheric layers, despite equivalent wave modes being introduced into similar pores in the photosphere., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The correlation between host star iron abundance and the exoplanet occurrence rate is well-established and arrived at in several studies. Similar correlations may be present for the most abundant elements, such as carbon and oxygen, which also control the dust chemistry of the protoplanetary disk. In this paper, using a large number of stars in the Kepler field observed by the LAMOST survey, it has been possible to estimate the planet occurrence rate with respect to the host star carbon abundance. Carbon abundances are derived using synthetic spectra fit of the CH G-band region in the LAMOST spectra. The carbon abundance trend with metallicity is consistent with the previous studies and follows the Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). Similar to [Fe/H], we find that the [C/H] values are higher among giant planet hosts. The trend between [C/Fe] and [Fe/H] in planet hosts and single stars is similar; however, there is a preference for giant planets around host stars with a sub-solar [C/Fe] ratio and higher [Fe/H]. Higher metallicity and sub-solar [C/Fe] values are found among younger stars as a result of GCE. Hence, based on the current sample, it is difficult to interpret the results as a consequence of GCE or due to planet formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

The imprints of stellar nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution of the galaxy can be seen in different stellar populations, with older generation stars showing higher $\alpha$-element abundances while the later generations becoming enriched with iron-peak elements. The evolutionary connections and chemical characteristics of circumstellar disks, stars, and their planetary companions can be inferred by studying the interdependence of planetary and host star properties. Numerous studies in the past have confirmed that high-mass giant planets are commonly found around metal-rich stars, while the stellar hosts of low-mass planets have a wide range of metallicity. In this work, we analyzed the detailed chemical abundances for a sample of $>900$ exoplanet hosting stars drawn from different radial velocity and transit surveys. We correlate the stellar abundance trends for $\alpha$ and iron-peak elements with the planets' mass. We find the planet mass-abundance correlation to be primarily negative for $\alpha$-elements and marginally positive or zero for the iron-peak elements, indicating that stars hosting giant planets are relatively younger. This is further validated by the age of the host stars obtained from isochrone fitting. The later enrichment of protoplanetary material with iron and iron-peak elements is also consistent with the formation of the giant planets via the core accretion process. A higher metal fraction in the protoplanetary disk is conducive to rapid core growth, thus providing a plausible route for the formation of giant planets. This study, therefore, indicates the observed trends in stellar abundances and planet mass are most likely a natural consequence of Galactic chemical evolution., Comment: The Astronomical Journal

A set of 464-min high-resolution high-cadence observations were acquired for a region near the Sun's disk center using the Interferometric BI-dimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) installed at the Dunn Solar Telescope. Ten sets of Dopplergrams are derived from the bisector of the spectral line corresponding approximately to different atmospheric heights, and two sets of Dopplergrams are derived using MDI-like algorithm and center-of-gravity method. These data are then filtered to keep only acoustic modes, and phase shifts are calculated between Doppler velocities of different atmospheric heights as a function of acoustic frequency. The analysis of the frequency- and height-dependent phase shifts shows that for evanescent acoustic waves, oscillations in the higher atmosphere lead those in the lower atmosphere by an order of 1 s when their frequencies are below about 3.0 mHz, and lags behind by about 1 s when their frequencies are above 3.0 mHz. Non-negligible phase shifts are also found in areas with systematic upward or downward flows. All these frequency-dependent phase shifts cannot be explained by vertical flows or convective blueshifts, but are likely due to complicated hydrodynamics and radiative transfer in the non-adiabatic atmosphere in and above the photosphere. These phase shifts in the evanescent waves pose great challenges to the interpretation of some local helioseismic measurements that involve data acquired at different atmospheric heights or in regions with systematic vertical flows. More quantitative characterization of these phase shifts is needed so that they can either be removed during measuring processes or be accounted for in helioseismic inversions., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Directly imaged planets are self-luminous companions of pre-main sequence and young main sequence stars. They reside in wider orbits ($\sim10\mathrm{s}-1000\mathrm{s}$~AU) and generally are more massive compared to the close-in ($\lesssim 10$~AU) planets. Determining the host star properties of these outstretched planetary systems is important to understand and discern various planet formation and evolution scenarios. We present the stellar parameters and metallicity ([Fe/H]) for a subsample of 18 stars known to host planets discovered by the direct imaging technique. We retrieved the high-resolution spectra for these stars from public archives and used the synthetic spectral fitting technique and Bayesian analysis to determine the stellar properties in a uniform and consistent way. For eight sources, the metallicities are reported for the first time, while the results are consistent with the previous estimates for the other sources. Our analysis shows that metallicities of stars hosting directly imaged planets are close to solar with a mean [Fe/H] = $-0.04\pm0.27$~dex. The large scatter in metallicity suggests that a metal-rich environment may not be necessary to form massive planets at large orbital distances. We also find that the planet mass-host star metallicity relation for the directly imaged massive planets in wide-orbits is very similar to that found for the well studied population of short period ($\lesssim 1$~yr) super-Jupiters and brown-dwarfs around main-sequence stars., Comment: Accepted in AJ for publication

A key component of solar interior dynamics is the meridional circulation (MC), whose poleward component in the surface layers has been well observed. Time-distance helioseismic studies of the deep structure of MC, however, have yielded conflicting inferences. Here, following a summary of existing results we show how a large center-to-limb systematics (CLS) in the measured travel times of acoustic waves affect the inferences through an analysis of frequency dependence of CLS, using data from the Helioseismic and Doppler Imager (HMI) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We perform a study of fluid motions and its temporal evolution in and around a small bipolar emerging flux region using observations made by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on-board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We employ local correlation tracking of the Doppler observations to follow horizontal fluid motions and line-of-sight magnetograms to follow the flux emergence. Changes in vertical vorticity and horizontal divergence are used to derive signatures of evolving twists in the magnetic field. Our analysis reveals that the two polarities of the magnetic flux swirl in opposite directions in early stages of flux emergence indicating an unwinding of the pre-emergence twists in the magnetic field. We further find that during the emergence, there is an increase in swirly motions in the neighbouring non-magnetic regions. We estimate the magnetic and kinetic energies and find that magnetic energy is about a factor of ten larger than the kinetic energy. During the evolution, when the magnetic energy decreases, an increase in the kinetic energy is observed indicating transfer of energy from the unwinding of magnetic flux tube to the surrounding fluid motions. Our results thus demonstrate the presence of pre-emergence twists in emerging magnetic field that is important in the context of the hemispheric helicity rule warranting a detailed statistical study in this context. Further, our observations point to a possible widespread generation of torsional waves in emerging flux regions due to the untwisting magnetic field with implications for upward energy transport to the corona., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

HISPEC (High-resolution Infrared Spectrograph for Exoplanet Characterization) is a proposed diffraction-limited spectrograph for the W.M. Keck Observatory, and a pathfinder for the MODHIS facility project (Multi-Object Diffraction-limited High-resolution Infrared Spectrograph) on the Thirty Meter Telescope. HISPEC/MODHIS builds on diffraction-limited spectrograph designs which rely on adaptively corrected single-mode fiber feeds. Seeing-limited high-resolution spectrographs, by virtue of the conservation of beam etendue, grow in volume following a D^3 power law (D is the telescope diameter), and are subject to daunting challenges associated with their large size. Diffraction-limited spectrographs fed by single mode fibers are decoupled from the telescope input, and are orders of magnitude more compact and have intrinsically stable line spread functions. Their efficiency is directly proportional to the performance of the adaptive optics (AO) system. AO technologies have matured rapidly over the past two decades and are baselined for future extremely large telescopes. HISPEC/MODHIS will take R>100,000 spectra of a few objects in a 10" field-of-view sampled at the diffraction limit (~10-50 mas), simultaneously from 0.95 to 2.4 microns (y-K). The scientific scope ranges from exoplanet infrared precision radial velocities, spectroscopy of transiting, close-in, and directly imaged exoplanets (atmospheric composition and dynamics, RM effect, spin measurements, Doppler imaging), brown dwarf characterization, stellar physics/chemistry, proto-planetary disk kinematics/composition, Solar system, extragalactic science, and cosmology. HISPEC/MODHIS features a compact, cost-effective design optimized to fully exploit the existing Keck-AO and future TMT-NFIRAOS infrastructures and boost the scientific reach of Keck Observatory and TMT soon after first light.

The problem of solar chromospheric heating remains a challenging one with wider implications for stellar physics. Several studies in the recent past have shown that small-scale inclined magnetic field elements channel copious amount of energetic low-frequency acoustic waves, that are normally trapped below the photosphere. These magneto-acoustic waves are expected to shock at chromospheric heights contributing to chromospheric heating. In this work, exploiting simultaneous photospheric vector magnetic field, Doppler, continuum and line-core intensity (of FeI 6173 {\AA}) observations from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) and lower-atmospheric UV emission maps in the 1700 {\AA} and 1600 {\AA} channels of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), both onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) of NASA, we revisit the relationships between magnetic field properties (inclination and strength) and the acoustic wave propagation (phase travel time). We find that the flux of acoustic energy, in the 2 - 5 mHz frequency range, between the upper photosphere and lower chromosphere is in the range of 2.25 - 2.6 kW m$^{-2}$, which is about twice the previous estimates. We identify that the relatively less-inclined magnetic field elements in the quiet-Sun channel a significant amount of waves of frequency lower than the theoretical minimum for acoustic cut-off frequency due to magnetic inclination. We also derive indications that these waves steepen and start to dissipate within the heights ranges probed, while those let out due to inclined magnetic fields pass through. The south-north travel-time differences are measured by applying time-distance helioseismology to the MDI and HMI medium-degree Dopplergrams covering May 1996-April 2017. Our data analysis corrects for several sources of systematic effects: P-angle error, surface magnetic field effects, and center-to-limb variations. An interpretation of the travel-time measurements is obtained using a forward-modeling approach in the ray approximation. The travel-time differences are similar in the southern hemisphere for cycles 23 and 24. However, they differ in the northern hemisphere between cycles 23 and 24. Except for cycle 24's northern hemisphere, the measurements favor a single-cell meridional circulation model where the poleward flows persist down to $\sim$0.8 $R_\odot$, accompanied by local inflows toward the activity belts in the near-surface layers. Cycle 24's northern hemisphere is anomalous: travel-time differences are significantly smaller when travel distances are greater than 20$^\circ$. This asymmetry between northern and southern hemispheres during cycle 24 was not present in previous measurements (e.g., Rajaguru & Antia 2015), which assumed a different P-angle error correction where south-north travel-time differences are shifted to zero at the equator for all travel distances. In our measurements, the travel-time differences at the equator are zero for travel distances less than $\sim$30$^\circ$, but they do not vanish for larger travel distances. This equatorial offset for large travel distances need not be interpreted as a deep cross-equator flow; it could be due to the presence of asymmetrical local flows at the surface near the end points of the acoustic ray paths., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

Accurate inference of solar meridional flow is of crucial importance for the understanding of solar dynamo process. Wave travel times, as measured on the surface, will change if the waves encounter perturbations e.g. in the sound speed or flows, as they propagate through the solar interior. Using functions called sensitivity kernels, we may image the underlying anomalies that cause measured shifts in travel times. The inference of large-scale structures e.g meridional circulation requires computing sensitivity kernels in spherical geometry. Mandal et al. (2017) have computed such spherical kernels in the limit of the first-Born approximation. In this work, we perform an inversion for meridional circulation using travel-time measurements obtained from 6 years of SDO/HMI data and those sensitivity kernels. We enforce mass conservation by inverting for a stream function. The number of free parameters is reduced by projecting the solution on to cubic B-splines in radius and derivatives of the Legendre-polynomial basis in latitude, thereby improving the condition number of the inverse problem. We validate our approach for synthetic observations before performing the actual inversion. We analyze data from the Helioseismic Magnetic Imager (HMI) and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instruments on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) to characterize the spatio-temporal acoustic power distribution in active regions as a function of the height in the solar atmosphere. For this, we use Doppler velocity and continuum intensity observed using the magnetically sensitive line at 6173 \AA\ as well as intensity at 1600 \AA\ and 1700 \AA. We focus on the power enhancements seen around AR 11330 as a function of wave frequency, magnetic field strength, field inclination and observation height. We find that acoustic halos occur above the acoustic cutoff frequency and extends up to 10 mHz in HMI Doppler and AIA 1700 \AA\ observations. Halos are also found to be strong functions of magnetic field and their inclination angle. We investigate the properties of a sunspot light-bridge, focusing on the changes produced by the impact of a plasma blob ejected from a C-class flare. We observed a sunspot in active region NOAA 12544 using spectropolarimetric raster maps of the four Fe I lines around 15655 \AA\ with the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS), narrow-band intensity images sampling the Fe I 6173 \AA\ line with the GREGOR Fabry-P\'erot Interferometer (GFPI), and intensity broad band images in G-band and Ca II H band with the High-resolution Fast Imager (HiFI). All these instruments are located at the GREGOR telescope at the Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife, Spain. The data cover the time before, during, and after the flare event. The analysis is complemented with Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The physical parameters of the atmosphere at differents heights were inferred using spectral-line inversion techniques. We identify photospheric and chromospheric brightenings, heating events, and changes in the Stokes profiles associated to the flare eruption and the subsequent arrival of the plasma blob to the light bridge, after traveling along an active region loop. The measurements suggest that these phenomena are the result of reconnection events driven by the interaction of the plasma blob with the magnetic field topology of the light bridge., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We derive horizontal fluid motions on the solar surface over large areas covering the quiet-Sun magnetic network from local correlation tracking of convective granules imaged in continuum intensity and Doppler velocity by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). From these we calculate horizontal divergence, vertical component of vorticity, and kinetic helicity of fluid motions. We study the correlations between fluid divergence and vorticity, and that between vorticity (kinetic helicity) and magnetic field. We find that the vorticity (kinetic helicity) around small-scale fields exhibits a hemispherical pattern (in sign) similar to that followed by the magnetic helicity of large-scale active regions (containing sunspots). We identify this pattern to be a result of the Coriolis force acting on supergranular-scale flows (both the outflows and inflows), and is consistent with earlier studies using local helioseismology. Further, we show that the magnetic fields cause transfer of vorticity from supergranular inflow regions to outflow regions, and that they tend to suppress the vortical motions around them when magnetic flux densities exceed about 300 G (HMI). We also show that such action of magnetic fields leads to marked changes in the correlations between fluid divergence and vorticity. The well-observed acoustic halo is an enhancement in time-averaged Doppler velocity and intensity power with respect to quiet-sun values which is prominent for weak and highly inclined field around the penumbra of sunspots and active regions. We perform 3D linear wave modelling with realistic distributed acoustic sources in a MHS sunspot atmosphere and compare the resultant simulation enhancements with multi-height SDO observations of the phenomenon. We find that simulated halos are in good qualitative agreement with observations. We also provide further proof that the underlying process responsible for the halo is the refraction and return of fast magnetic waves which have undergone mode conversion at the critical $a=c$ atmospheric layer. In addition, we also find strong evidence that fast-Alfv\'en mode conversion plays a significant role in the structure of the halo, taking energy away from photospheric and chromospheric heights in the form of field-aligned Alfv\'en waves. We present and discuss results from time-distance helioseismic measurements of meridional circulation in the solar convection zone using 4 years of Doppler velocity observations by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Using an in-built mass conservation constraint in terms of the stream function we invert helioseismic travel times to infer meridional circulation in the solar convection zone. We find that the return flow that closes the meridional circulation is possibly beneath the depth of $0.77 R_{\odot}$. We discuss the significance of this result in relation to other helioseismic inferences published recently and possible reasons for the differences in the results. Our results show clearly the pitfalls involved in the measurements of material flows in the deep solar interior given the current limits on signal-to-noise and our limited understanding of systematics in the data. We study properties of waves of frequencies above the photospheric acoustic cut-off of $\approx$5.3 mHz, around four active regions, through spatial maps of their power estimated using data from Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The wavelength channels 1600 {\AA} and 1700 {\AA} from AIA are now known to capture clear oscillation signals due to helioseismic p modes as well as waves propagating up through to the chromosphere. Here we study in detail, in comparison with HMI Doppler data, properties of the power maps, especially the so called 'acoustic halos' seen around active regions, as a function of wave frequencies, inclination and strength of magnetic field (derived from the vector field observations by HMI) and observation height. We infer possible signatures of (magneto-)acoustic wave refraction from the observation height dependent changes, and hence due to changing magnetic strength and geometry, in the dependences of power maps on the photospheric magnetic quantities. The effects of acoustic wave absorption, mode conversion and transmission by a sunspot on the helioseismic inferences are widely discussed, but yet accounting for them has proved difficult for lack of a consistent framework within helioseismic modelling. Here, following a discussion of problems and issues that the near-surface magnetohydrodynamics hosts through a complex interplay of radiative transfer, measurement issues, and MHD wave processes, I present some possibilities entirely from observational analyses based on imaging spectropolarimetry. In particular, I present some results on wave evolution as a function of observation height and inclination of magnetic field to the vertical, derived from a high-cadence imaging spectropolarimetric observation of a sunspot and its surroundings using the instrument IBIS (NSO/Sac Peak, USA). These observations were made in magnetically sensitive (Fe I 6173 A) and insensitive (Fe I 7090 A) upper photospheric absorption lines. Temperature contrasts and magnetic field strengths of sunspot umbrae broadly follow the thermal-magnetic relationship obtained from magnetohydrostatic equilibrium. Using a compilation of recent observations, especially in molecular bands, of temperature contrasts of starspots in cool stars, and a grid of Kurucz stellar model atmospheres constructed to cover layers of sub-surface convection zone, we examine how the above relationship scales with effective temperature T_{eff}, surface gravity g and the associated changes in opacity of stellar photospheric gas. Using a high cadence imaging spectropolarimetric observation of a sunspot and its surroundings in magnetically sensitive (FeI 6173 A) and insensitive (FeI 7090 A) upper photospheric absorption lines, we map the instantaneous wave phases and helioseismic travel times as a function of observation height and inclination of magnetic field to the vertical. Time-distance helioseismic measurements in surface- and deep-focus geometries for wave-paths that distinguish surface magnetic contributions from those due to deeper perturbations beneath a large sunspot are presented and analysed. Travel times showing an increased wave speed region extending down to about 18 Mm beneath the spot are detected in deep-focus geometry that largely avoids use of wave field within the spot. Wave travel-time shifts in the vicinity of sunspots are typically interpreted as arising predominantly from magnetic fields, flows, and local changes in sound speed. We show here that the suppression of granulation related wave sources in a sunspot can also contribute significantly to these travel-time shifts, and in some cases, an asymmetry between in and outgoing wave travel times. The tight connection between the physical interpretation of travel times and source-distribution homogeneity is confirmed. Statistically significant travel-time shifts are recovered upon numerically simulating wave propagation in the presence of a localized decrease in source strength. We also demonstrate that these time shifts are relatively sensitive to the modal damping rates; thus we are only able to place bounds on the magnitude of this effect. We see a systematic reduction of 10-15 seconds in $p$-mode mean travel times at short distances ($\sim 6.2$ Mm) that could be misinterpreted as arising from a shallow (thickness of 1.5 Mm) increase ($\sim$ 4%) in the sound speed. At larger travel distances ($\sim 24$ Mm) a 6-13 s difference between the ingoing and outgoing wave travel times is observed; this could mistakenly be interpreted as being caused by flows., Comment: Revised version. Using Doppler velocity data from the SOI/MDI instrument onboard the SoHO spacecraft, we do time-distance helioseismic inversions for sound-speed perturbations beneath 16 sunspots observed in high-resolution mode. We clearly detect ring-like regions of enhanced sound speed beneath most sunspot penumbrae, extending from near the surface to depths of about 3.5 Mm. Due to their location and dependence on frequency bands of p-modes used, we believe these rings to be artifacts produced by a surface signal probably associated with the sunspot magnetic field., Comment: accepted by ApJ

We show that the use of Doppler shifts of Zeeman sensitive spectral lines to observe wavesn in sunspots is subject to measurement specific phase shifts arising from, (i) altered height range of spectral line formation and the propagating character of p mode waves in penumbrae, and (ii) Zeeman broadening and splitting. We also show that these phase shifts depend on wave frequencies, strengths and line of sight inclination of magnetic field, and the polarization state used for Doppler measurements. It is well known that the observed amplitude of solar oscillations is lower in sunspots than in quiet regions of the Sun. We show that this local reduction in oscillation amplitudes combined with the phase-speed filtering procedure in time-distance helioseismic analyses could be a source of systematic errors in the range of 5 - 40% in the measured travel-time anomalies of acoustic waves around sunspots. Removing these travel time artifacts is important for correctly inferring the subsurface structure of sunspots. We suggest an empirical correction procedure and illustrate its usage for a small sunspot. The convective collapse of thin magnetic flux tubes in the photospheres of sun-like stars is investigated using realistic models of the superadiabatic upper convection zone layers of these stars. The strengths of convectively stable flux tubes are computed as a function of surface gravity and effective temperature. We find that while stars with T$_{eff}\ge$ 5500 K and log $g$$\ge$ 4.0 show flux tubes highly evacuated of gas, and hence strong field strengths, due to convective collapse, cooler stars exhibit flux tubes with lower field strengths. The presence of intense magnetic fields in and around sunspots is expected to modify the solar structure and oscillation frequencies. Applying the ring diagram technique to data from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), we analyze the characteristics of high-degree f and p modes near active regions and compare them with the characteristics of the modes in quiet regions. As expected from earlier results, the f- and p-mode frequencies of high degree modes are found to be significantly larger in magnetically active regions. In addition, we find that the power in both f and p modes is lower in active regions, while the widths of the peaks are larger, indicating smaller lifetimes. We also find that the oscillation modes are more asymmetric in active regions than those in quiet regions, indicating that modes in active regions are excited closer to the surface. The effects of radiative energy exchange on the convective instability of a weak field magnetic structure, which lead to a prediction and a physical explanation of the magnetic flux dependent field strength, are examined in detail using a real model stratification for the photospheric and convection zone structure of the Sun.
