13. Treatment of acetabular fractures

Abstract

Background: Acetabular fractures are difficult to manage. There are advocates of closed methods as well as surgical methods of treating acetabular fractures. But controversy still exist as to which is the best way of treatment. Methods: We have evaluated from 1995 to 2000, 68 cases of acetabular fractures. Twenty two cases were managed surgically and 46 cases were managed non-operatively. The cases were followed up for a period ranging from 12 to 78 months (Avg. 36 months). Results: The results of the treatment were assessed using the scoring system of Matta. In the non-surgically managed group congruent reduction was achieved in 36 cases and good to excellent functional results were achieved in 30 cases. In the surgically managed group congruent reduction was achieved in 18 cases and good to excellent functional results were achieved in 12 cases. In 32 cases early or late complications were seen. Conclusion: Even if the prognosis for the restoration of normal joint function is not good, the restoration of normal anatomy will improve the results of future reconstructive procedures.

15. Neglected dorsal dislocation of the scaphoid

Abstract

Isolated dislocation of the scaphoid is very rare. A 45-year old male, industrial worker reported two and half months after injury with wrist pain and swelling on the dorsum of left wrist. He was diagnosed as neglected dorsal dislocation of scaphoid. Proximal row carpectomy with capsular interposition was done stabilizing the distal carpus on the radius using Kirschner wires. At-12 months follow-up the patient had good wrist function and was satisfied with the outcome of the treatment. We hereby report this neglected dorsal dislocation of scaphoid in view of rarity and discuss the various options for management.

18. Neutron diffraction study of superconducting RESr(2)Cu(3-x)M(x)O(z) (M=Re,W)

Abstract

Superconductivity has recently been reported in RESr(2)CU(2.85)Re(0.15)O(x) (RE = Y,Tb,Dy,Ho,Er and Tm) and RESr(2)Cu(2.80)W(0.20)O(x) (RE = Y, Dy, Ho and Er) with T-c ranging from 22 to 41 K. Room temperature powder neutron diffraction studies have been carried out for obtaining structural parameters and their relation with superconductivity in these materials. Reitveld refinements were carried out adopting the space groups P4/mmm (tetragonal). Occupancy of the rare earths is less than 1 indicating vacancy at the rare earth sites. Cu(2)-O distance in RESr(2)Cu(3-x)M(x)O(z) (M = Re and W) is smaller than that of REBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) which is consistent with the smaller ionic radius of Sr2+. Our studies show that the M-cations (Re or W) occupy the Cu(1) chain site.

19. An Investigation into Inelasticity Accompanying High Velocity Impact and Penetration Problems

Abstract

The problems investigated in the project fall into three broad categories: (1) Modeling of twinning under high velocity impact (2) Constitutive equations for elasto-plastic response under large deformations with application to simple shear, and (3) variational approaches to the development of governing equations and boundary conditions for incorporating "lattice curvature effects" in plasticity with application to shear banding problems. Results and their significance: Using a novel "multiconfigurational" framework developed by us, we have developed models that account for deformation twinning under high velocity impact. The results show good agreement with experimental data. We found that the nonlinearity of the elastic response will lead to interesting softening behavior when the material undergoes simple shear deformations. We have developed a theory incorporating lattice curvature effects that can effectively simulate the formation of shear bands. We have also developed a new variational technique based on the maximization of the rate of energy dissipation that not only delivers the governing differential equations but also the accompanying boundary conditions. This work will allow for the development of computational codes that can delineate the relative influence of lattice curvature, twinning and strain softening on the formation of shear bands.

Abstract

The present investigation uses a blend of Nigella sativa biodiesel, diesel, n-butanol, and graphene oxide nanoparticles to enhance the performance, combustion and symmetric characteristics and to reduce the emissions from the diesel engine of a modified common rail direct injection (CRDI). A symmetric toroidal-type combustion chamber and a six-hole solenoid fuel injector were used in the current investigation. The research aimed to study the effect of two fuel additives, n-butanol and synthesized asymmetric graphene oxide nanoparticles, in improving the fuel properties of Nigella sativa biodiesel (NSME25). The concentration of n-butanol (10%) was kept constant, and asymmetric graphene oxide nano-additive and sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (SDBS) surfactant were added to n-butanol and NSME25 in the form of nanofluid in varying proportions. The nanofluids were prepared using a probe sonication process to prevent nanoparticles from agglomerating in the base fluid. The process was repeated for biodiesel, n-butanol and nanofluid, and four different stable and symmetric nanofuel mixtures were prepared by varying the graphene oxide (30, 60, 90 and 120 ppm). The nanofuel blend NSME25B10GO90 displayed an enhancement in the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and a reduction in brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) at maximum load due to high catalytic activity and the enhanced microexplosion phenomenon developed by graphene oxide nanoparticles. The heat release rate (HRR), in-cylinder temperature increased, while exhaust gas temperature (EGT) decreased. Smoke, hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions also fell, in a trade-off with marginally increased NOx, for all nanofuel blends, compared with Nigella sativa biodiesel. The results obtained indicates that 90 ppm of graphene oxide nanoparticles and 10% n-butanol in Nigella sativa biodiesel are comparable with diesel fuel.
