In this work, we present high-resolution (R~100,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N~800) spectroscopic observations for the well-known, bright, extremely metal-poor, carbon-enhanced star BD+44 493. We determined chemical abundances and upper limits for 17 elements from WIYN/NEID data, complemented with 11 abundances re-determined from Subaru and Hubble data, using the new, more accurate, stellar atmospheric parameters calculated in this work. Our analysis suggests that BD+44 493 is a low-mass (0.83Msun) old (12.1-13.2Gyr) second-generation star likely formed from a gas cloud enriched by a single metal-free 20.5Msun Population III star in the early Universe. With a disk-like orbit, BD+44 493 does not appear to be associated with any major merger event in the early history of the Milky Way. From the precision radial-velocity NEID measurements (median absolute deviation - MAD=16m/s), we were able to constrain companion planetary masses around BD+44 493 and rule out the presence of planets as small as msin(i)=2MJ out to periods of 100 days. Gaia astrometry of nearby stars is precise enough to detect the tiny displacements induced by substellar companions, but radial velocity data are needed for definitive confirmation. Here we present radial velocity follow-up observations of 28 M and K stars with candidate astrometric substellar companions, which led to the confirmation of two systems, Gaia-4b and Gaia-5b, and the refutation of 21 systems as stellar binaries. Gaia-4b is a massive planet ($M = 11.8 \pm 0.7 \:\mathrm{M_J}$) in a $P = 571.3 \pm 1.4\:\mathrm{day}$ orbit with a projected semi-major axis $a_0=0.312 \pm 0.040\:\mathrm{mas}$ orbiting a $0.644 \pm 0.02 \:\mathrm{M_\odot}$ star. Gaia-5b is a brown dwarf ($M = 20.9 \pm 0.5\:\mathrm{M_J}$) in a $P = 358.58 \pm 0.19\:\mathrm{days}$ eccentric $e=0.6412 \pm 0.0027$ orbit with a projected angular semi-major axis of $a_0 = 0.947 \pm 0.038\:\mathrm{mas}$ around a $0.34 \pm 0.03 \mathrm{M_\odot}$ star. With close to three years of observations in hand, the NEID Earth Twin Survey (NETS) is starting to unearth new astrophysical signals for a curated sample of bright, radial velocity (RV)-quiet stars. We present the discovery of the first NETS exoplanet, HD 86728 b, a $m_p\sin i = 9.16^{+0.55}_{-0.56}\ \rm{M}_\oplus$ planet on a circular, $P=31.1503^{+0.0062}_{-0.0066}$ d orbit, thereby confirming a candidate signal identified by Hirsch et al. (2021). We confirm the planetary origin of the detected signal, which has a semi-amplitude of just $K=1.91^{+0.11}_{-0.12}$ m s$^{-1}$, via careful analysis of the NEID RVs and spectral activity indicators, and we constrain the mass and orbit via fits to NEID and archival RV measurements. The host star is intrinsically quiet at the $\sim1$ m s$^{-1}$ level, with the majority of this variability likely stemming from short-timescale granulation. We present a new analysis of Kepler-21, the brightest (V = 8.5) Kepler system with a known transiting exoplanet, Kepler-21 b. Kepler-21 b is a radius valley planet ($R = 1.6\pm 0.2 R_{\oplus}$) with an Earth-like composition (8.38$\pm$1.62 g/cc), though its mass and radius fall in the regime of possible "water worlds." We utilize new Keck/HIRES and WIYN/NEID radial velocity (RV) data in conjunction with Kepler and TESS photometry to perform a detailed study of activity mitigation between photometry and RVs. We additionally refine the system parameters, and we utilize Gaia astrometry to place constraints on a long-term RV trend. Our activity analysis affirms the quality of Kepler photometry for removing correlated noise from RVs, despite its temporal distance, though we reveal some cases where TESS may be superior. Using refined orbital parameters and updated composition curves, we rule out a ``water world" scenario for Kepler-21 b, and we identify a long period super-Jupiter planetary candidate, Kepler-21 (c).

The WIYN 3.5m Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory hosts a suite of optical and near infrared instruments, including an extreme precision, optical spectrograph, NEID, built for exoplanet radial velocity studies. In order to achieve sub ms precision, NEID has strict requirements on survey efficiency, stellar image positioning, and guiding performance, which have exceeded the native capabilities of the telescope's original pointing and tracking system. In order to improve the operational efficiency of the telescope we have developed a novel telescope pointing system, built on a recurrent neural network, that does not rely on the usual pointing models (TPoint or other quasi physical bases). We discuss the development of this system, how the intrinsic properties of the pointing problem inform our network design, and show preliminary results from our best models. We also discuss plans for the generalization of this framework, so that it can be applied at other sites.

Microarcsecond resolutions afforded by an optical-NIR array with kilometer-baselines would enable breakthrough science. However significant technology barriers exist in transporting weakly coherent photon states over these distances: primarily photon loss and phase errors. Quantum telescopy, using entangled states to link spatially separated apertures, offers a possible solution to the loss of photons. We report on an initiative launched by NSF NOIRLab in collaboration with the Center for Quantum Networks and Arizona Quantum Initiative at the University of Arizona, Tucson, to explore these concepts further. A brief description of the quantum concepts and a possible technology roadmap towards a quantum-enhanced very long baseline optical-NIR interferometric array is presented. NEID is a high-resolution red-optical precision radial velocity (RV) spectrograph recently commissioned at the WIYN 3.5 m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona, USA. NEID has an extremely stable environmental control system, and spans a wavelength range of 380 to 930 nm with two observing modes: a High Resolution (HR) mode at R $\sim$ 112,000 for maximum RV precision, and a High Efficiency (HE) mode at R $\sim$ 72,000 for faint targets. In this manuscript we present a detailed description of the components of NEID's optical fiber feed, which include the instrument, exposure meter, calibration system, and telescope fibers. Many parts of the optical fiber feed can lead to uncalibratable RV errors, which cannot be corrected for using a stable wavelength reference source. We show how these errors directly cascade down to performance requirements on the fiber feed and the scrambling system. We detail the design, assembly, and testing of each component. Designed and built from the bottom-up with a single-visit instrument precision requirement of 27 $\textrm{cm~s}^{-1}$, close attention was paid to the error contribution from each NEID subsystem. Finally, we include the lab and on-sky tests performed during instrument commissioning to test the illumination stability, and discuss the path to achieving the instrumental stability required to search for a true Earth twin around a Solar-type star., Comment: The Astronomical Journal, Volume 166, Number 3, 2023

Some evolved binaries, namely post-asymptotic giant branch binaries, are surrounded by stable and massive circumbinary disks similar to protoplanetary disks found around young stars. Around 10% of these disks are transition disks: they have a large inner cavity in the dust. Previous interferometric measurements and modeling have ruled out the cavity being formed by dust sublimation and suggested that the cavity is due to a massive circumbinary planet that traps the dust in the disk and produces the observed depletion of refractory elements on the surface of the post-AGB star. In this study, we test alternative scenario in which the large cavity could be due to dynamical truncation from the inner binary. We performed near-infrared interferometric observations with the CHARA Array on the archetype of such a transition disk around a post-AGB binary: AC Her. We detect the companion at ten epochs over 4 years and determine the 3-dimensional orbit using these astrometric measurements in combination with the radial velocity time series. This is the first astrometric orbit constructed for a post-AGB binary system. We derive the best-fit orbit with a semi-major axis $2.01 \pm 0.01$ mas ($2.83\pm0.08$ au), inclination $(142.9 \pm 1.1)^\circ$ and longitude of the ascending node $(155.1 \pm 1.8)^\circ$. We find that the theoretical dynamical truncation and dust sublimation radius are at least $\sim3\times$ smaller than the observed inner disk radius ($\sim21.5$ mas or 30 au). This strengthens the hypothesis that the origin of such a cavity is due to the presence of a circumbinary planet., Comment: Accepted to be published in The Astrophysical Journal

TOI-1899 b is a rare exoplanet, a temperate Warm Jupiter orbiting an M-dwarf, first discovered by Ca\~nas et al. (2020) from a TESS single-transit event. Using new radial velocities (RVs) from the precision RV spectrographs HPF and NEID, along with additional TESS photometry and ground-based transit follow-up, we are able to derive a much more precise orbital period of $P = 29.090312_{-0.000035}^{+0.000036}$ d, along with a radius of $R_p = 0.99 \pm 0.03~R_J$. We have also improved the constraints on planet mass, $M_p = 0.67 \pm 0.04~M_J$, and eccentricity, which is consistent with a circular orbit at 2$\sigma$ ($e = 0.044_{-0.027}^{+0.029}$). TOI-1899 b occupies a unique region of parameter space as the coolest known ($T_{eq} \approx$ 380 K) Jovian-sized transiting planet around an M-dwarf; we show that it has great potential to provide clues regarding the formation and migration mechanisms of these rare gas giants through transmission spectroscopy with JWST as well as studies of tidal evolution., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, accepted to AJ

The possibility of an Earth-Sun analog beyond our solar system is one of the most longstanding questions in science. At present, answering this question embodies an extremely difficult measurement problem that requires multiple coordinated advances in astronomical telescopes, fiber optics, precision spectrographs, large format detector arrays, and advanced data processing. Taken together, addressing this challenge will require the measurement and calibration of shifts in stellar spectra at the 10^-10 level over multi-year periods. The potential for such precision has recently been advanced by the introduction of laser frequency combs (LFCs) to the field of precision astronomical spectroscopy. However, the expense, complexity and lack of full spectral coverage of LFCs has limited their widespread use and ultimate impact. To address this issue, we explore simple and robust white-light-illuminated Fabry-Perot (FP) etalons as spectral calibrators for precise radial velocity measurements. We track the frequencies of up to 13,000 etalon modes of the installed FPs from two state-of-the-art astronomical spectrographs. Combining these measurements with modeling, we trace unexpected chromatic variations of the FP modes to sub-picometer changes in the dielectric layers of the broad bandwidth FP mirrors. This yields the determination of the frequencies of the FP modes with precision approaching 10^-11/day, equivalent to a radial velocity (RV) Doppler shift of 3 mm/s/day. These results represent critical progress in precision RV measurements on two fronts: first, they make FP etalons a more powerful stand-alone calibration tool, and second, they demonstrate the capability of LFCs to extend cm/s level RV measurement precision over periods approaching a year. We detail the follow up and characterization of a transiting exo-Venus identified by TESS, GJ 3929b, (TOI-2013b) and its non-transiting companion planet, GJ 3929c (TOI-2013c). GJ 3929b is an Earth-sized exoplanet in its star's Venus-zone (P$_{b}$ = 2.616272 $\pm$ 0.000005 days; S$_{b}$ = 17.3$^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$ S$_{\oplus}$) orbiting a nearby M dwarf. GJ 3929c is most likely a non-transiting sub-Neptune. Using the new, ultra-precise NEID spectrometer on the WIYN 3.5 m Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, we are able to modify the mass constraints of planet b reported in previous works and consequently improve the significance of the mass measurement to almost 4$\sigma$ confidence (M$_{b}$ = 1.75 $\pm$ 0.45 M$_{\oplus}$). We further adjust the orbital period of planet c from its alias at 14.30 $\pm$ 0.03 days to the likely true period of 15.04 $\pm$ 0.03 days, and adjust its minimum mass to m$\sin i$ = 5.71 $\pm$ 0.92 M$_{\oplus}$. Using the diffuser-assisted ARCTIC imager on the ARC 3.5 m telescope at Apache Point Observatory, in addition to publicly available TESS and LCOGT photometry, we are able to constrain the radius of planet b to R$_{p}$ = 1.09 $\pm$ 0.04 R$_{\oplus}$. GJ 3929b is a top candidate for transmission spectroscopy in its size regime (TSM = 14 $\pm$ 4), and future atmospheric studies of GJ 3929b stand to shed light on the nature of small planets orbiting M dwarfs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2204.09063

We present the discovery of a new Jovian-sized planet, TOI-3757 b, the lowest density planet orbiting an M dwarf (M0V). It orbits a solar-metallicity M dwarf discovered using TESS photometry and confirmed with precise radial velocities (RV) from HPF and NEID. With a planetary radius of $12.0^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$ $R_{\oplus}$ and mass of $85.3^{+8.8}_{-8.7}$ $M_{\oplus}$, not only does this object add to the small sample of gas giants ($\sim 10$) around M dwarfs, but also, its low density ($\rho =$ $0.27^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$ $\textrm{g~cm}^{-3}$) provides an opportunity to test theories of planet formation. We present two hypotheses to explain its low density; first, we posit that the low metallicity of its stellar host ($\sim$ 0.3 dex lower than the median metallicity of M dwarfs hosting gas giants) could have played a role in the delayed formation of a solid core massive enough to initiate runaway accretion. Second, using the eccentricity estimate of $0.14 \pm 0.06$ we determine it is also plausible for tidal heating to at least partially be responsible for inflating the radius of TOI-3757b b. The low density and large scale height of TOI-3757 b makes it an excellent target for transmission spectroscopy studies of atmospheric escape and composition (TSM $\sim$ 190). We use HPF to perform transmission spectroscopy of TOI-3757 b using the helium 10830 \AA~ line. Doing this, we place an upper limit of 6.9 \% (with 90\% confidence) on the maximum depth of the absorption from the metastable transition of He at $\sim$ 10830 \AA, which can help constraint the atmospheric mass loss rate in this energy limited regime., Comment: AJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2107.13670

We confirm the planetary nature of two gas giants discovered by TESS to transit M dwarfs. TOI-3714 ($V=15.24,~J=11.74$) is an M2 dwarf hosting a hot Jupiter ($M_p=0.70 \pm 0.03~\mathrm{M_J}$ and $R_p=1.01 \pm 0.03~\mathrm{R_J}$) on an orbital period of $2.154849 \pm 0.000001$ days with a resolved white dwarf companion. TOI-3629 ($V=14.63,~J=11.42$) is an M1 dwarf hosting a hot Jupiter ($M_p=0.26 \pm 0.02~\mathrm{M_J}$ and $R_p=0.74 \pm 0.02~\mathrm{R_J}$) on an orbital period of $3.936551_{-0.000006}^{+0.000005}$ days. We characterize each transiting companion using a combination of ground-based and space-based photometry, speckle imaging, and high-precision velocimetry from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder and the NEID spectrographs. With the discovery of these two systems, there are now nine M dwarfs known to host transiting hot Jupiters. Among this population, TOI-3714 b ($T_{eq}=750\pm20$ K and $\mathrm{TSM}=98\pm7$) and TOI-3629 b ($T_{eq}=690\pm20$ K and $\mathrm{TSM}=80\pm9$) are warm gas giants amenable to additional characterization with transmission spectroscopy to probe atmospheric chemistry and, for TOI-3714, obliquity measurements to probe formation scenarios., Comment: 39 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. Efforts with extreme-precision radial velocity (EPRV) instruments to detect small-amplitude planets are largely limited, on many timescales, by the effects of stellar variability and instrumental systematics. One avenue for investigating these effects is the use of small solar telescopes which direct disk-integrated sunlight to these EPRV instruments, observing the Sun at high cadence over months or years. We have designed and built a solar feed system to carry out "Sun-as-a-star" observations with NEID, a very high precision Doppler spectrometer recently commissioned at the WIYN 3.5m Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The NEID solar feed has been taking observations nearly every day since December 2020; data is publicly available at the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI) NEID Solar Archive: \url{https://neid.ipac.caltech.edu/search_solar.php}. In this paper, we present the design of the NEID solar feed and explanations behind our design intent. The warm Neptune GJ 3470b transits a nearby ($d=29$pc) bright slowly rotating M1.5-dwarf star. Using spectroscopic observations during two transits with the newly commissioned NEID spectrometer on the WIYN 3.5m Telescope at Kitt Peak Observatory, we model the classical Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect yielding a sky-projected obliquity of $\lambda=98_{-12}^{+15\:\circ}$ and a $v \sin i = 0.85_{-0.33}^{+0.27}$km/s. Leveraging information about the rotation period and size of the host star, our analysis yields a true obliquity of $\psi=95_{-8}^{+9\:\circ}$, revealing that GJ 3470b is on a polar orbit. Using radial velocities from HIRES, HARPS and the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, we show that the data are compatible with a long-term RV slope of $\dot{\gamma} = -0.0022 \pm 0.0011$m/s/day over a baseline of 12.9 years. If the RV slope is due to acceleration from another companion in the system, we show that such a companion is capable of explaining the polar and mildly eccentric orbit of GJ 3470b using two different secular excitation models. The existence of an outer companion can be further constrained with additional RV observations, Gaia astrometry, and future high-contrast imaging observations. Lastly, we show that tidal heating from GJ 3470b's mild eccentricity has most likely inflated the radius of GJ 3470b by a factor of $\sim$1.5-1.7, which could help account for its evaporating atmosphere., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. We present spectroscopic measurements of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for WASP-148b, the only known hot Jupiter with a nearby warm-Jupiter companion, from the WIYN/NEID and Keck/HIRES instruments. This is one of the first scientific results reported from the newly commissioned NEID spectrograph, as well as the second obliquity constraint for a hot Jupiter system with a close-in companion, after WASP-47. WASP-148b is consistent with being in alignment with the sky-projected spin axis of the host star, with $\lambda=-8^{\circ}.2^{{+8^{\circ}.7}}_{-9^{\circ}.7}$. The low obliquity observed in the WASP-148 system is consistent with the orderly-alignment configuration of most compact multi-planet systems around cool stars with obliquity constraints, including our solar system, and may point to an early history for these well-organized systems in which migration and accretion occurred in isolation, with relatively little disturbance. By contrast, previous results have indicated that high-mass and hot stars appear to more commonly host a wide range of misaligned planets: not only single hot Jupiters, but also compact systems with multiple super-Earths. We suggest that, to account for the high rate of spin-orbit misalignments in both compact multi-planet and isolated-hot-Jupiter systems orbiting high-mass and hot stars, spin-orbit misalignments may be caused by distant giant planet perturbers, which are most common around these stellar types., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Using radial-velocity data from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, we have measured the mass of the Neptune-sized planet K2-25b, as well as the obliquity of its M4.5-dwarf host star in the 600-800MYr Hyades cluster. This is one of the youngest planetary systems for which both of these quantities have been measured, and one of the very few M dwarfs with a measured obliquity. Based on a joint analysis of the radial velocity data, time-series photometry from the K2 mission, and new transit light curves obtained with diffuser-assisted photometry, the planet's radius and mass are $3.44\pm 0.12 \mathrm{R_\oplus}$ and $24.5_{-5.2}^{+5.7} \mathrm{M_\oplus}$. These properties are compatible with a rocky core enshrouded by a thin hydrogen-helium atmosphere (5% by mass). We measure an orbital eccentricity of $e=0.43 \pm 0.05$. The sky-projected stellar obliquity is $\lambda=3 \pm 16^{\circ}$, compatible with spin-orbit alignment, in contrast to other "hot Neptunes" that have been studied around older stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ, 31 pages, 14 figures

We confirm the planetary nature of a warm Jupiter transiting the early M dwarf TOI-1899, using a combination of available TESS photometry; high-precision, near-infrared spectroscopy with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder; and speckle and adaptive optics imaging. The data reveal a transiting companion on an $\sim29$-day orbit with a mass and radius of $0.66\pm0.07\ \mathrm{M_{J}}$ and $1.15_{-0.05}^{+0.04}\ \mathrm{R_{J}}$, respectively. The star TOI-1899 is the lowest-mass star known to host a transiting warm Jupiter, and we discuss the follow-up opportunities afforded by a warm ($\mathrm{T_{eq}}\sim362$ K) gas giant orbiting an M0 star. Our observations reveal that TOI-1899.01 is a puffy warm Jupiter, and we suggest additional transit observations to both refine the orbit and constrain the true dilution observed in TESS., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, published in AJ

Solar contamination, due to moonlight and atmospheric scattering of sunlight, can cause systematic errors in stellar radial velocity (RV) measurements that significantly detract from the ~10cm/s sensitivity required for the detection and characterization of terrestrial exoplanets in or near Habitable Zones of Sun-like stars. The addition of low-level spectral contamination at variable effective velocity offsets introduces systematic noise when measuring velocities using classical mask-based or template-based cross-correlation techniques. Here we present simulations estimating the range of RV measurement error induced by uncorrected scattered sunlight contamination. We explore potential correction techniques, using both simultaneous spectrometer sky fibers and broadband imaging via coherent fiber imaging bundles, that could reliably reduce this source of error to below the photon-noise limit of typical stellar observations. We discuss the limitations of these simulations, the underlying assumptions, and mitigation mechanisms. We also present and discuss the components designed and built into the NEID precision RV instrument for the WIYN 3.5m telescope, to serve as an ongoing resource for the community to explore and evaluate correction techniques. We emphasize that while "bright time" has been traditionally adequate for RV science, the goal of 10cm/s precision on the most interesting exoplanetary systems may necessitate access to darker skies for these next-generation instruments.

We describe present and future capabilities of the Mid-Scale Observatories (MSO) of the new national center merging NOAO, Gemini Observatory and LSST Operations. MSO is comprised of Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory (CTIO) and the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO). Telescopes at both sites currently operate on a mix of public and private funding. Recent upgrades have equipped the MSO 4-m class telescopes to perform world-class surveys in diverse areas of astrophysics, from dark energy to exoplanets., Comment: 10-page APC White Paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey. We present imaging and spectroscopic observations of 6478 Gault, a 6 km diameter inner main-belt asteroid currently exhibiting strong, comet-like characteristics. Three distinct tails indicate that ultra-slow dust (ejection speed 0.15+/-0.05 m/s) was emitted from Gault in separate episodes beginning UT 2018 October 28+/-5 (Tail A), UT 2018 December 31+/-5 (Tail B), and UT 2019 February 10+/-7, with durations of 10 to 20 days. With a mean particle radius 100 micron, the estimated masses of the tails are M_A = 2e7 kg, M_B = 3e6 kg and M_C = 3e5 kg, respectively, and the mass loss rates from the nucleus are 10 to 20 kg/s for Tail A, 2 to 3 kg/s for Tail B and about 0.2 kg/s for Tail C. In its optical colors Gault is more similar to C-type asteroids than to S-types, even though the latter are numerically dominant in the inner asteroid belt. A spectroscopic upper limit to the production of gas is set at 1 kg/s. Discrete emission in three protracted episodes effectively rules out an impact origin for the observed activity. Sublimation driven activity is unlikely given the inner belt orbit and the absence of detectable gas. In any case, sublimation would not easily account for the observed multiple ejections. The closest similarity is between Gault and active asteroid 311P/(2013 P5), an object showing repeated but aperiodic ejections of dust over a 9 month period. While Gault is 10 times larger than 311P/(2013 P5), and the spin-up time to radiation torques is 100 times longer, its properties are likewise most consistent with episodic emission from a body rotating near breakup., Comment: 40 pages, 13 Figures

Two key areas of emphasis in contemporary experimental exoplanet science are the detailed characterization of transiting terrestrial planets, and the search for Earth analog planets to be targeted by future imaging missions. Both of these pursuits are dependent on an order-of-magnitude improvement in the measurement of stellar radial velocities (RV), setting a requirement on single-measurement instrumental uncertainty of order 10 cm/s. Achieving such extraordinary precision on a high-resolution spectrometer requires thermo-mechanically stabilizing the instrument to unprecedented levels. Here, we describe the Environment Control System (ECS) of the NEID Spectrometer, which will be commissioned on the 3.5 m WIYN Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in 2019, and has a performance specification of on-sky RV precision < 50 cm/s. Because NEID's optical table and mounts are made from aluminum, which has a high coefficient of thermal expansion, sub-milliKelvin temperature control is especially critical. NEID inherits its ECS from that of the Habitable-zone Planet Finder (HPF), but with modifications for improved performance and operation near room temperature. Our full-system stability test shows the NEID system exceeds the already impressive performance of HPF, maintaining vacuum pressures below $10^{-6}$ Torr and an RMS temperature stability better than 0.4 mK over 30 days. Observations of active asteroid P/2017 S5 when near perihelion reveal the ejection of large (0.1 to 10 mm) particles at 0.2 to 2 m/s speeds, with estimated mass-loss rates of a few kg/s. The protracted nature of the mass loss (continuous over 150 days) is compatible with a sublimation origin, meaning that this object is likely an ice-bearing main-belt comet. Equilibrium sublimation of exposed water ice covering as little as 0.1 sq. km can match the data. Observations a year after perihelion show the object in an inactive state from which we deduce a nucleus effective radius 450(+100/-60) m (albedo 0.06+/-0.02 assumed). The gravitational escape speed from a body of this size is just 0.3 m/s, comparable to the inferred ejection speed of the dust. Time-series photometry provides tentative evidence for rapid rotation (lightcurve period 1.4 hour) that may also play a role in the loss of mass and which, if real, is a likely consequence of spin-up by sublimation torques. P/2017 S5 shares both physical and orbital similarities with the split active asteroid pair P/2016 J1-A and J1-B, and all three objects are likely members of the 7 Myr old, collisionally produced, Theobalda family., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

We report on the upgraded One Degree Imager (ODI) at the WIYN 3.5 meter telescope at the Kitt Peak Observatory after the focal plane was expanded by an additional seventeen detectors in spring 2015. The now thirty Orthogonal Transfer Array CCD detectors provide a total field of view of 40' x 48' on the sky. The newly added detectors underwent a design revision to mitigate reduced charge transfer efficiency under low light conditions. We discuss the performance of the focal plane and challenges in the photometric calibration of the wide field of view, helped by the addition of telescope baffles. In a parallel project, we upgraded the instrument's three filter arm mechanisms, where a degrading worm-gear mechanism was replaced by a chain drive that is operating faster and with high reliability. Three more filters, a u' band and two narrow band filters were added to the instrument's complement, with two additional narrow band filters currently in procurement (including an H-alpha filter). We present observations of the interstellar interloper 1I/2017 U1 ('Oumuamua) taken during its 2017 October flyby of Earth. The optical colors B-V = 0.70$\pm$0.06, V-R = 0.45$\pm$0.05, overlap those of the D-type Jovian Trojan asteroids and are incompatible with the ultrared objects which are abundant in the Kuiper belt. With a mean absolute magnitude $H_V$ = 22.95 and assuming a geometric albedo $p_V$ = 0.1, we find an average radius of 55 m. No coma is apparent; we deduce a limit to the dust mass production rate of only $\sim$ 2$\times$10$^{-4}$ kg s$^{-1}$, ruling out the existence of exposed ice covering more than a few m$^2$ of the surface. Volatiles in this body, if they exist, must lie beneath an involatile surface mantle $\gtrsim$0.5 m thick, perhaps a product of prolonged cosmic ray processing in the interstellar medium. The lightcurve range is unusually large at $\sim$2.0$\pm$0.2 magnitudes. Interpreted as a rotational lightcurve the body has semi-axes $\sim$230 m $\times$ 35 m. A $\sim$6:1 axis ratio is extreme relative to most small solar system asteroids and suggests that albedo variations may additionally contribute to the variability. The lightcurve is consistent with a two-peaked period $\sim$8.26 hr but the period is non-unique as a result of aliasing in the data. Except for its unusually elongated shape, 1I/2017 U1 is a physically unremarkable, sub-kilometer, slightly red, rotating object from another planetary system. The steady-state population of similar, $\sim$100 m scale interstellar objects inside the orbit of Neptune is $\sim$10$^4$, each with a residence time $\sim$10 yr., Comment: 25 Pages, 2 Tables, 7 Figures; submitted to ApJL

(Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at Cerro Pach\'{o}n in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg$^2$ field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000 square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5$\sigma$ point-source depth in a single visit in $r$ will be $\sim 24.5$ (AB). The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. The survey area will be contained within 30,000 deg$^2$ with $\delta<+34.5^\circ$, and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, $ugrizy$, covering the wavelength range 320--1050 nm. About 90\% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg$^2$ region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 years of operations, and yield a coadded map to $r\sim27.5$. The remaining 10\% of the observing time will be allocated to projects such as a Very Deep and Fast time domain survey. We report long-baseline interferometric measurements of circumstellar dust around massive evolved stars with the MIDI instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer and provide spectrally dispersed visibilities in the 8-13 micron wavelength band. We also present diffraction-limited observations at 10.7 micron on the Keck Telescope with baselines up to 8.7 m which explore larger scale structure. We have resolved the dust shells around the late type WC stars WR 106 and WR 95, and the enigmatic NaSt1 (formerly WR 122), suspected to have recently evolved from a Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) stage. For AG Car, the protoypical LBV in our sample, we marginally resolve structure close to the star, distinct from the well-studied detached nebula. The dust shells around the two WC stars show fairly constant size in the 8-13 micron MIDI band, with gaussian half-widths of ~ 25 to 40 mas. The compact dust we detect around NaSt1 and AG Car favors recent or ongoing dust formation. Using the measured visibilities, we build spherically symmetric radiative transfer models of the WC dust shells which enable detailed comparison with existing SED-based models. Our results indicate that the inner radii of the shells are within a few tens of AU from the stars. In addition, our models favor grain size distributions with large (~ 1 micron) dust grains. This proximity of the inner dust to the hot central star emphasizes the difficulty faced by current theories in forming dust in the hostile environment around WR stars. Although we detect no direct evidence for binarity for these objects, dust production in a colliding-wind interface in a binary system is a feasible mechanism in WR systems under these conditions., Comment: 21 pages, 4 tables, 13 figures. An important requirement for the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) is to carry out precision astrometry in crowded fields. This capability is crucial, for example, to accurately measure proper motions of bright stars in nearby galaxies. From such measurements, one can obtain distance estimates, explore the dynamics of these systems and measure the mass of the Milky Way itself. In this paper we investigate errors introduced by confusion, i.e. the presence of objects other than the targeted star in the SIM field of view (FOV). Using existing HST images of fields in M31, the LMC and the Galaxy we simulate the background within the SIM FOV and estimate the errors in the measured position of the target star. Our simulations account for the error contribution from photon statistics. We also study the effects of pointing imperfections when a field is revisited which result in errors in the measured proper motion. We use the simulations to explore the measurement accuracy of several SIM key programs which will require crowded field astrometry. In M31, the error in the absolute position of the targets could be significant for all but the brightest targets. Our results also indicate that in the case of the brightest targets in M31, and for all likely target magnitudes in the other cases, confusion-induced proper motion errors are well within the SIM requirements. However, targets which vary in flux between measurements can be susceptible to enhanced proper motion errors. We also find that for an on-source integration time of one hour, photon noise is larger than or of comparable magnitude to the confusion-induced position error for bright targets and dominates over proper motion error in most cases., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Oct 2001 issue of PASP

We present a survey of molecular gas in the J = 1 -> 0 transition of 12CO towards the IRAS Vela shell. The shell, previously identified from IRAS maps, is a ring-like structure seen in the region of the Gum Nebula. We confirm the presence of molecular gas associated with some of the infrared point sources seen along the Shell. We have studied the morphology and kinematics of the gas and conclude that the shell is expanding at the rate of ~ 13 km/s from a common center. We go on to include in this study the Southern Dark Clouds seen in the region. The distribution and motion of these objects firmly identify them as being part of the shell of molecular gas. Estimates of the mass of gas involved in this expansion reveal that the shell is a massive object comparable to a GMC. From the expansion and various other signatures like the presence of bright-rimmed clouds with head-tail morphology, clumpy distribution of the gas etc., we conjecture that the molecular gas we have detected is the remnant of a GMC in the process of being disrupted and swept outwards through the influence of a central OB association, itself born of the parent cloud., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures. In the preceding paper (paper I), we presented HI absorption spectra towards radio sources very close to the lines of sight towards 25 bright stars against which optical absorption spectra had been obtained earlier. In this paper we analyse the results and draw some conclusions. To summarize briefly, in most cases we found HI absorption at velocities corresponding to the optical absorption features provided the velocities were < 10 km/s. At higher velocities we did not detect any HI absorption down to an optical depth limit of 0.1 (except in four cases which we attribute to gas in systematic motion rather than clouds in random motion). After discussing various scenarios, we suggest that this trend should perhaps be understood in terms of the high velocity interstellar clouds being accelerated, heated and ablated by expanding supernova remnants., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy

The NEID spectrometer is an optical (380-930 nm), fiber-fed, precision Doppler spectrometer currently in development for the WIYN 3.5 m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory as part of the NN-EXPLORE partnership. Designed to achieve a radial velocity precision of < 30 cm/s, NEID will be sensitive enough to detect terrestrial-mass exoplanets around low-mass stars. Light from the target stars is focused by the telescope to a bent Cassegrain port at the edge of the primary mirror mechanical support. The specialized NEID "Port Adapter" system is mounted at this bent Cassegrain port and is responsible for delivering the incident light from the telescope to the NEID fibers. In order to provide stable, high-quality images to the science instrument, the Port Adapter houses several sub-components designed to acquire the target stars, correct for atmospheric dispersion, stabilize the light onto the science fibers, and calibrate the spectrometer by injecting known wavelength sources such as a laser frequency comb. Here we provide an overview of the overall opto-mechanical design and system requirements of the Port Adapter. We also describe the development of system error budgets and testplans to meet those requirements.
