The persistent challenge of bias in machine learning models necessitates robust solutions to ensure parity and equal treatment across diverse groups, particularly in classification tasks. Current methods for mitigating bias often result in information loss and an inadequate balance between accuracy and fairness. To address this, we propose a novel methodology grounded in bilevel optimization principles. Our deep learning-based approach concurrently optimizes for both accuracy and fairness objectives, and under certain assumptions, achieving proven Pareto optimal solutions while mitigating bias in the trained model. Theoretical analysis indicates that the upper bound on the loss incurred by this method is less than or equal to the loss of the Lagrangian approach, which involves adding a regularization term to the loss function. We demonstrate the efficacy of our model primarily on tabular datasets such as UCI Adult and Heritage Health. When benchmarked against state-of-the-art fairness methods, our model exhibits superior performance, advancing fairness-aware machine learning solutions and bridging the accuracy-fairness gap. We investigate the weak semileptonic decay of the $ \Omega^{+}_{ccb} \rightarrow \Xi^{++}_{cc} ~{\ell}\bar\nu_{\ell}$, where a triply heavy baryon with spin 1/2 decays into the observed doubly heavy baryon with spin 1/2, using QCD sum rule method in all lepton channels. We compute the six relevant vector and axial vector form factors entering the low energy matrix elements in full theory. The invariant form factors are building blocks, using the fit faction of which in terms of $ q^2 $ in whole physical region, we calculate the exclusive widths in three lepton channels. We present a comprehensive analysis of the periodic flares observed in the 6.7 GHz methanol transition in G22.356+0.066, utilizing the Maxwell-Bloch equations (MBEs) as a framework to model these phenomena. By solving the one-dimensional MBEs, we describe the behavior of both the quasi-steady-state maser and transient superradiance regimes. Our findings indicate that the observed periodic flares, with varying timescales across different velocities, are consistent with the characteristics of Dicke's superradiance, triggered by a common radiative pump in regions of varying inverted column densities. This work provides new insights into the physical processes governing variability in maser-hosting regions and underscores the significance of superradiance as a powerful radiation mechanism in astrophysical environments., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

The main objective of this research is to identify and classify the opinions of Persian-speaking Twitter users related to drought crises in Iran and subsequently develop a model for detecting these opinions on the platform. To achieve this, a model has been developed using machine learning and text mining methods to detect the opinions of Persian-speaking Twitter users regarding the drought issues in Iran. The statistical population for the research included 42,028 drought-related tweets posted over a one-year period. These tweets were extracted from Twitter using keywords related to the drought crises in Iran. Subsequently, a sample of 2,300 tweets was qualitatively analyzed, labeled, categorized, and examined. Next, a four-category classification of users` opinions regarding drought crises and Iranians' resilience to these crises was identified. Based on these four categories, a machine learning model based on logistic regression was trained to predict and detect various opinions in Twitter posts. The developed model exhibits an accuracy of 66.09% and an F-score of 60%, indicating that this model has good performance for detecting Iranian Twitter users' opinions regarding drought crises. The ability to detect opinions regarding drought crises on platforms like Twitter using machine learning methods can intelligently represent the resilience level of the Iranian society in the face of these crises, and inform policymakers in this area about changes in public opinion.

One fundamental task for NLP is to determine the similarity between two texts and evaluate the extent of their likeness. The previous methods for the Persian language have low accuracy and are unable to comprehend the structure and meaning of texts effectively. Additionally, these methods primarily focus on formal texts, but in real-world applications of text processing, there is a need for robust methods that can handle colloquial texts. This requires algorithms that consider the structure and significance of words based on context, rather than just the frequency of words. The lack of a proper dataset for this task in the Persian language makes it important to develop such algorithms and construct a dataset for Persian text. This paper introduces a new transformer-based model to measure semantic similarity between Persian informal short texts from social networks. In addition, a Persian dataset named FarSSiM has been constructed for this purpose, using real data from social networks and manually annotated and verified by a linguistic expert team. The proposed model involves training a large language model using the BERT architecture from scratch. This model, called FarSSiBERT, is pre-trained on approximately 104 million Persian informal short texts from social networks, making it one of a kind in the Persian language. Moreover, a novel specialized informal language tokenizer is provided that not only performs tokenization on formal texts well but also accurately identifies tokens that other Persian tokenizers are unable to recognize. It has been demonstrated that our proposed model outperforms ParsBERT, laBSE, and multilingual BERT in the Pearson and Spearman's coefficient criteria. Additionally, the pre-trained large language model has great potential for use in other NLP tasks on colloquial text and as a tokenizer for less-known informal words.

In this paper we construct a dissipative quintessential cosmic inflation. For this purpose, we add a multiplicative dissipative term in the standard quintessence field Lagrangian. We consider the specific form of dissipation as the time integral including the Hubble parameter and an arbitrary function that describes the dissipative properties of the quintessential scalar field. Inflation parameters and observables are calculated under slow-roll approximations and a detailed calculation of the cosmological perturbations is performed in this setup. We consider different forms of potentials and calculate the scalar spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio for a constant as well as variable dissipation function. To check the reliability of this model, a numerical analysis on the model parameters space is done in confrontation with recent observational data. By comparing the results with observational joint datasets at 68% and 95% confidence levels, we obtain some constraints on the model parameters space, specially the dissipation factor with e-folds numbers N = 55 and N = 60. As some specific results, we show that the power-law potential with a constant dissipation factor and N = 60 is mildly consistent with observational data in some restricted domains of the model parameter space with very small and negative dissipation factor and a negligible tensor-toscalar ratio. But this case with N = 55 is consistent with observation considerably. For power-law potential and variable dissipation factor as $Q = {\alpha}\phi^n$, the consistency with observation is also considerable with a reliable tensor-to-scalar ratio. Self-supervised pretraining methods with masked prediction demonstrate remarkable within-dataset performance in skeleton-based action recognition. However, we show that, unlike contrastive learning approaches, they do not produce well-separated clusters. Additionally, these methods struggle with generalization in few-shot settings. To address these issues, we propose Self-supervised Tuning for 3D Action Recognition in Skeleton sequences (STARS). Specifically, STARS first uses a masked prediction stage using an encoder-decoder architecture. It then employs nearest-neighbor contrastive learning to partially tune the weights of the encoder, enhancing the formation of semantic clusters for different actions. By tuning the encoder for a few epochs, and without using hand-crafted data augmentations, STARS achieves state-of-the-art self-supervised results in various benchmarks, including NTU-60, NTU-120, and PKU-MMD. In addition, STARS exhibits significantly better results than masked prediction models in few-shot settings, where the model has not seen the actions throughout pretraining. Sign Language Recognition (SLR) is a fast-growing field that aims to fill the communication gaps between the hearing-impaired and people without hearing loss. Existing solutions for Persian Sign Language (PSL) are limited to word-level interpretations, underscoring the need for more advanced and comprehensive solutions. Moreover, previous work on other languages mainly focuses on manipulating the neural network architectures or hardware configurations instead of benefiting from the aggregated results of multiple models. In this paper, we introduce PenSLR, a glove-based sign language system consisting of an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and five flexible sensors powered by a deep learning framework capable of predicting variable-length sequences. We achieve this in an end-to-end manner by leveraging the Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) loss function, eliminating the need for segmentation of input signals. To further enhance its capabilities, we propose a novel ensembling technique by leveraging a multiple sequence alignment algorithm known as Star Alignment. Furthermore, we introduce a new PSL dataset, including 16 PSL signs with more than 3000 time-series samples in total. We utilize this dataset to evaluate the performance of our system based on four word-level and sentence-level metrics. Our evaluations show that PenSLR achieves a remarkable word accuracy of 94.58% and 96.70% in subject-independent and subject-dependent setups, respectively. These achievements are attributable to our ensembling algorithm, which not only boosts the word-level performance by 0.51% and 1.32% in the respective scenarios but also yields significant enhancements of 1.46% and 4.00%, respectively, in sentence-level accuracy.

The ability to understand and reason about spatial relationships between objects in images is an important component of visual reasoning. This skill rests on the ability to recognize and localize objects of interest and determine their spatial relation. Early vision and language models (VLMs) have been shown to struggle to recognize spatial relations. We extend the previously released What'sUp dataset and propose a novel comprehensive evaluation for spatial relationship understanding that highlights the strengths and weaknesses of 27 different models. The recently discovered ferroelectric nematic (NF) liquid crystals (LC) have been reported to show an extraordinarily large value of the real part of the dielectric constant at low frequencies. However, it was argued by Clark et al in Physical Review Research 6, 013195 (2024) that what was measured was the capacitance of the insulating layer at LC/electrode surface and not that of the liquid crystal. Here we describe the results of dielectric spectroscopy measurements of an NF material in cells with variable thickness of the insulating layers. Our measurements quantitatively verify the model by Clark et al. Vision and Language Models (VLMs) continue to demonstrate remarkable zero-shot (ZS) performance across various tasks. However, many probing studies have revealed that even the best-performing VLMs struggle to capture aspects of compositional scene understanding, lacking the ability to properly ground and localize linguistic phrases in images. Recent VLM advancements include scaling up both model and dataset sizes, additional training objectives and levels of supervision, and variations in the model architectures. To characterize the grounding ability of VLMs, such as phrase grounding, referring expressions comprehension, and relationship understanding, Pointing Game has been used as an evaluation metric for datasets with bounding box annotations. In this paper, we introduce a novel suite of quantitative metrics that utilize GradCAM activations to rigorously evaluate the grounding capabilities of pre-trained VLMs like CLIP, BLIP, and ALBEF. These metrics offer an explainable and quantifiable approach for a more detailed comparison of the zero-shot capabilities of VLMs and enable measuring models' grounding uncertainty. An oblique helicoidal state of a cholesteric liquid crystal (ChOH) is capable of continuous change of the pitch P in response to an applied electric field. Such a structure reflects 50% of the unpolarized light incident along the ChOH axis in the electrically tunable band determined by P/2. Here we demonstrate that at an oblique incidence of light, ChOH reflects 100% of light of any polarization. This singlet band of total reflection is associated with the full pitch P. We also describe the satellite P/2, P/3, and P/4 bands. The P/2 and P/4 bands are triplets while P/3 band is a singlet caused by multiple scatterings at P and P/2. Today, skin cancer is considered as one of the most dangerous and common cancers in the world which demands special attention. Skin cancer may be developed in different types; including melanoma, actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma. Among them, melanoma is more unpredictable. Melanoma cancer can be diagnosed at early stages increasing the possibility of disease treatment. Automatic classification of skin lesions is a challenging task due to diverse forms and grades of the disease, demanding the requirement of novel methods implementation. Deep convolution neural networks (CNN) have shown an excellent potential for data and image classification. In this article, we inspect skin lesion classification problem using CNN techniques. Remarkably, we present that prominent classification accuracy of lesion detection can be obtained by proper designing and applying of transfer learning framework on pre-trained neural networks, without any requirement for data enlargement procedures i.e. merging VGG16 and VGG19 architectures pre-trained by a generic dataset with modified AlexNet network, and then, fine-tuned by a subject-specific dataset containing dermatology images. The convolution neural network was trained using 2541 images and, in particular, dropout was used to prevent the network from overfitting. Finally, the validity of the model was checked by applying the K-fold cross validation method. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and their variations have shown effectiveness in facial expression recognition (FER). However, they face challenges when dealing with high computational complexity and multi-view head poses in real-world scenarios. We introduce a lightweight attentional network incorporating multi-scale feature fusion (LANMSFF) to tackle these issues. For the first challenge, we have carefully designed a lightweight fully convolutional network (FCN). We address the second challenge by presenting two novel components, namely mass attention (MassAtt) and point wise feature selection (PWFS) blocks. The MassAtt block simultaneously generates channel and spatial attention maps to recalibrate feature maps by emphasizing important features while suppressing irrelevant ones. On the other hand, the PWFS block employs a feature selection mechanism that discards less meaningful features prior to the fusion process. This mechanism distinguishes it from previous methods that directly fuse multi-scale features. Our proposed approach achieved results comparable to state-of-the-art methods in terms of parameter counts and robustness to pose variation, with accuracy rates of 90.77% on KDEF, 70.44% on FER-2013, and 86.96% on FERPlus datasets. Electrophoresis is the motion of particles relative to a surrounding fluid driven by a uniform electric field. In conventional electrophoresis, the electrophoretic velocity grows linearly with the applied field. Nonlinear effects with a quadratic speed vs field dependence are gaining research interest since an alternating current field could drive them. Here we report on the giant nonlinearity of electrophoresis in a nematic liquid crystal in which the speed grows with the fourth and sixth powers of the electric field. The mechanism is attributed to the shear thinning of the nematic environment induced by the moving colloid. Hybrid board games (HBGs) augment their analog origins digitally (e.g., through apps) and are an increasingly popular pastime activity. Continuous world and character development and customization, known to facilitate engagement in video games, remain rare in HBGs. If present, they happen digitally or imaginarily, often leaving physical aspects generic. We developed DungeonMaker, a fabrication-augmented HBG bridging physical and digital game elements: 1) the setup narrates a story and projects a digital game board onto a laser cutter; 2) DungeonMaker assesses player-crafted artifacts; 3) DungeonMaker's modified laser head senses and moves player- and non-player figures, and 4) can physically damage figures. An evaluation (n=4x3) indicated that DungeonMaker provides an engaging experience, may support players' connection to their figures, and potentially spark novices' interest in fabrication. Brain-robot interaction (BRI) empowers individuals to control (semi-)automated machines through their brain activity, either passively or actively. In the past decade, BRI systems have achieved remarkable success, predominantly harnessing electroencephalogram (EEG) signals as the central component. This paper offers an up-to-date and exhaustive examination of 87 curated studies published during the last five years (2018-2023), focusing on identifying the research landscape of EEG-based BRI systems. This review aims to consolidate and underscore methodologies, interaction modes, application contexts, system evaluation, existing challenges, and potential avenues for future investigations in this domain. Based on our analysis, we present a BRI system model with three entities: Brain, Robot, and Interaction, depicting the internal relationships of a BRI system. We especially investigate the essence and principles on interaction modes between human brains and robots, a domain that has not yet been identified anywhere. We then discuss these entities with different dimensions encompassed. Within this model, we scrutinize and classify current research, reveal insights, specify challenges, and provide recommendations for future research trajectories in this field. Meanwhile, we envision our findings offer a design space for future human-robot interaction (HRI) research, informing the creation of efficient BRI frameworks.

With the rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) applications, there's a big demand for more processing power and resources in devices. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) looks promising for enhancing performance and reducing costs by offloading the computing work of IoT to MEC servers. However, the current methods for offloading have issues with privacy and security during the transfer of data and programs. To tackle this, recent developments have introduced secure offloading methods using Blockchain technology, which helps to make MEC more secure by building trust between nodes, improving how edges are authenticated and accessed, and stopping unauthorized access to devices. This paper reviews these Blockchain-based offloading methods for different MEC settings. It starts by explaining the key ideas in offloading and Blockchain, then it sorts the Blockchain-based offloading methods by the algorithms they use. It also compares the offloading methods in each group and ends with a discussion and comparison of the different techniques, tools, and metrics used in these methods.

We study the triply heavy spin-1/2 baryons with quark contents $ ccb $ and $ bbc $, and calculate their mass and residue using QCD sum rules. In the calculations, we consider the ground (1S), first orbitally excited (1P) and first radially excited (2S) states. Aiming to achieve higher accuracies in the results, we perform the computations by taking into account the non-perturbative operators up to eight mass dimensions. We compare our results with the predictions of other theoretical studies existing in the literature. We propose and analyze an adaptive adversary that can retrain a Trojaned DNN and is also aware of SOTA output-based Trojaned model detectors. We show that such an adversary can ensure (1) high accuracy on both trigger-embedded and clean samples and (2) bypass detection. Our approach is based on an observation that the high dimensionality of the DNN parameters provides sufficient degrees of freedom to simultaneously achieve these objectives. We also enable SOTA detectors to be adaptive by allowing retraining to recalibrate their parameters, thus modeling a co-evolution of parameters of a Trojaned model and detectors. We then show that this co-evolution can be modeled as an iterative game, and prove that the resulting (optimal) solution of this interactive game leads to the adversary successfully achieving the above objectives. In addition, we provide a greedy algorithm for the adversary to select a minimum number of input samples for embedding triggers. We show that for cross-entropy or log-likelihood loss functions used by the DNNs, the greedy algorithm provides provable guarantees on the needed number of trigger-embedded input samples. Extensive experiments on four diverse datasets -- MNIST, CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and SpeechCommand -- reveal that the adversary effectively evades four SOTA output-based Trojaned model detectors: MNTD, NeuralCleanse, STRIP, and TABOR.

Transfer learning (TL) has been demonstrated to improve DNN model performance when faced with a scarcity of training samples. However, the suitability of TL as a solution to reduce vulnerability of overfitted DNNs to privacy attacks is unexplored. A class of privacy attacks called membership inference attacks (MIAs) aim to determine whether a given sample belongs to the training dataset (member) or not (nonmember). We introduce Double-Dip, a systematic empirical study investigating the use of TL (Stage-1) combined with randomization (Stage-2) to thwart MIAs on overfitted DNNs without degrading classification accuracy. Our study examines the roles of shared feature space and parameter values between source and target models, number of frozen layers, and complexity of pretrained models. We evaluate Double-Dip on three (Target, Source) dataset paris: (i) (CIFAR-10, ImageNet), (ii) (GTSRB, ImageNet), (iii) (CelebA, VGGFace2). We consider four publicly available pretrained DNNs: (a) VGG-19, (b) ResNet-18, (c) Swin-T, and (d) FaceNet. Our experiments demonstrate that Stage-1 reduces adversary success while also significantly increasing classification accuracy of nonmembers against an adversary with either white-box or black-box DNN model access, attempting to carry out SOTA label-only MIAs. After Stage-2, success of an adversary carrying out a label-only MIA is further reduced to near 50%, bringing it closer to a random guess and showing the effectiveness of Double-Dip. Stage-2 of Double-Dip also achieves lower ASR and higher classification accuracy than regularization and differential privacy-based methods.

Microscopic active droplets are of interest since they can be used to transport matter from one point to another. The challenge is to control the trajectory. In this work, we demonstrate an approach to control the direction of active droplet propulsion by a photoresponsive cholesteric liquid crystal environment. The active droplet represents a water dispersion of bacterial B. subtilis microswimmers. When placed in a cholesteric, a surfactant-stabilized active droplet distorts the local director field, producing a point defect-hedgehog, which breaks the fore-aft symmetry. The chaotic motion of the bacteria inside the droplet is rectified into directional motion by the asymmetric director field outside the droplet. When the pitch of the cholesteric is altered by visible light irradiation, the asymmetry axis and thus the droplet trajectory realign along a new direction. Droplets realign counterclockwise on exposure to light of 535 nm, and clockwise on exposure to light of 450 nm, as dictated by the photoinduced change in the handedness of the cholesteric. The strategy allows for a non-contact dynamic control of active droplets trajectories and demonstrates the advantage of orientationally ordered media in control of active matter over their isotropic counterparts.

The rise of AI-powered classification techniques has ushered in a new era for data-driven Fault Detection and Diagnosis in smart building systems. While extensive research has championed supervised FDD approaches, the real-world application of unsupervised methods remains limited. Among these, cluster analysis stands out for its potential with Building Management System data. This study introduces an unsupervised learning strategy to detect faults in terminal air handling units and their associated systems. The methodology involves pre-processing historical sensor data using Principal Component Analysis to streamline dimensions. This is then followed by OPTICS clustering, juxtaposed against k-means for comparison. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy was gauged using several labeled datasets depicting various fault scenarios and real-world building BMS data. Results showed that OPTICS consistently surpassed k-means in accuracy across seasons. Notably, OPTICS offers a unique visualization feature for users called reachability distance, allowing a preview of detected clusters before setting thresholds. Moreover, according to the results, while PCA is beneficial for reducing computational costs and enhancing noise reduction, thereby generally improving the clarity of cluster differentiation in reachability distance. It also has its limitations, particularly in complex fault scenarios. In such cases, PCA's dimensionality reduction may result in the loss of critical information, leading to some clusters being less discernible or entirely undetected. These overlooked clusters could be indicative of underlying faults, and their obscurity represents a significant limitation of PCA when identifying potential fault lines in intricate datasets., Comment: 44 pages, 6 Tables, 7 Figures
