Objectives: Time-to-treatment initiation is an important consideration for patients undergoing thoracic surgery for early-stage lung cancer because delays have the potential to adversely affect outcomes. This study seeks to quantify time-to-treatment initiation for patients with clinical stage I lung cancer, explore patient factors and predictors that lead to an increased time-to-treatment initiation, and compare surgeon perception of appropriate time-to-treatment initiation to the results. Methods: Time-to-treatment initiation was determined for patients enrolled in the Mount Sinai Initiative for Early Lung Cancer Research on Treatment study who underwent surgical resection for clinical stage I lung cancer between March 2016 and December 2021. The following dates were determined: (1) date of first suspicious radiologic imaging, (2) date of first biopsy, and (3) date of surgery. A total of 15 thoracic surgeons who participated in the Mount Sinai Initiative for Early Lung Cancer Research on Treatment were assessed on their perception on time-to-treatment initiation. Results: For 638 patients, median time from first suspicious imaging findings to biopsy was 40 days, biopsy to surgery was 37 days, and suspicious imaging to surgery was 84 days. Significant factors that resulted in longer time-to-treatment initiation in the multivariate analysis were African American or Black race (P = .005), vascular disease (P = .01), and median household income less than $75,000 (P = .04). Although the surgeon's perception was that the average time from biopsy to surgery was 28 days, it was longer for 63.5% of participants; surgeon perception of maximum time between diagnosis and surgery was 84 days and longer for 28.7% of participants. Conclusions: Patient factors such as race, income, and comorbidities were found to have differences in time-to-treatment initiation. Delays to surgery exceeded the expectations of thoracic surgeons.

Introduction: Immunotherapy has improved survival in patients with advanced NSCLC. Efficacy may decrease when patients are treated with antibiotics, possibly due to gut microbiome disruption, but few studies have investigated this using real-world, patient-level populations in the United States. Methods: We have analyzed antibiotic use in patients with stage IV first, primary NSCLC diagnosed in 2015 and treated with chemotherapy or chemoimmunotherapy, drawn from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare data set. Patients had to have continuous part A, part B, and part D Medicare coverage. Survival was determined through Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards models. All data analyses were performed using SAS. Results: The study included 788 patients, 440 (56%) of whom received antibiotics within 2 months before or after starting systemic treatment. The median follow-up time was 11.64 months. There was a statistically significant difference in survival for patients who received antibiotics (p = 0.007) and who had more than 1 round of antibiotics versus zero or 1 round (p < 0.0001). After adjustment, receipt of antibiotics (hazard ratio [HR]adj: 1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.99–1.37) and receipt of multiple rounds of antibiotics (HRadj: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.14–1.60) were statistically significantly associated with worse survival. Among just those receiving chemoimmunotherapy (n = 203; 26%), there was still an increased risk of death for those receiving multiple antibiotic rounds (HRadj: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.09–2.13). Conclusions: Antibiotic use concurrent with chemoimmunotherapy seems to be associated with worse survival. This is more pronounced when more cycles of antibiotics are given. Purpose: To analyze the morphological outcomes of the posterior corneal opacity or “semilunar sign” in noninfectious anterior scleritis using multimodal imaging. Methods: This was a prospective observational case series. Patients with anterior scleritis from January 2018 to January 2019 were included. Clinical and demographic data were collected. Posterior cornea was visualized using the digital slit lamp photography (Elite, mega digital vision), spectral domain optical coherence tomography (MS39), and specular count analyzer (EM-3000). “Semilunar sign” was defined by the (1) presence of posterior corneal opacity, (2) concave semilunar pattern, (3) absence of blood vessels, and (4) normal anterior cornea. Incidence, clinical characteristics and significance, correlation with Mantoux sensitivity, and role of multimodal valuation were assessed. Results: Overall 76 eyes of 72 patients were recruited with anterior scleritis. Fifteen eyes of 11 patients (15.3%) presented with semilunar sign. The scleritis was both nonnecrotizing (n = 8) and necrotizing (n = 7). The semilunar configuration appeared as isolated (n = 9) and continuous lesion (n = 6). The extent was directly related to the scleral disease extent (P = 0.002). The mean thickness measured 212.5 ± 129.3 μm. The mean central endothelial cell density (ECD) was 2540.8 ± 351.7 cells/mm2, which was significantly higher than the involved peripheral cornea (P = 0.05). The mean surface area of the semilunar sign was 7.7 ± 5.2 mm2. There was no significant correlation between the opacity thickness and the best-corrected visual acuity (P = 0.895, r = −0.39), ECD (P = 0.52, r = −0.188), and Mantoux (P = 0.696, r =− 0.142). Conclusion: Corneal semilunar sign of scleritis affected the peripheral cornea and caused no functional abnormality in early presentation. Multimodal analysis can aid in clinical assessment and severity.

Focusing on the U.S., this chapter discuss the economic aspects that accompany cancer spending in case of prevention, screening, and treatment. While these three facets are all important in promoting patient health and safety, screening and prevention have been shown to have much lower cost compared with cancer therapeutics or in eliminating the health hazards in low- and moderate-income housing in New York City. The distribution of healthcare funds, however, does not accurately reflect the differences in impact on survival and quality of life. Finally, by focusing on treatments, they critically discuss how the increasing use of robotic-assisted surgery–expensive for healthcare facilities–may not be to the benefit of patients.

Megaselia dilatimana Disney, 2006 and M. falloconsueta Disney, 2006 (Diptera, Phoridae), two species of scuttle flies previously only known from Afrotropical region, are reported for the first time from Peninsular Malaysia. These species were collected from July to September 2020 during surveys of saprophagous scuttle flies at selected locations in the states of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Johor. The geographical distribution of these species is extended to the Oriental region and increases the number of species of Megaselia known from Peninsular Malaysia to 36.

Hindu civilizationism is more than a century old phenomenon that has been steadily gaining strength. Its recent amalgam with populism has made it ascendant, popular, and mainstream in India. This paper explores how Hindu civilizationism is not only an essential part of the Hindutva and BJP’s narrative but also the mainstay of several government policies. The “other” of the BJP’s populist civilizationist rhetoric are primarily Muslims and Muslim civilization in India and the aim is to make India “vishwaguru” (world leader) again after 1200 years of colonialism. The evidence of this heady mixture of civilizationism and populism is numerous and ubiquitous. This paper analyzes topics such as Akhand Bharat, the golden age, denigrating Mughals, Hindutva pseudoscience, and Sanskrit promotion to highlight the evidence.

Objective: To determine the most common autoimmune diseases (ADs) among Yemeni patients in Sana’a city. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in six health facilities in Sana’a city from January 2014 to July 2017. It prospectively recruited 131 patients with ADs and retrospectively included 1786 records of patients with ADs, totaling the sample size to 1917. Data about gender and age of prospective patients and as well as the gender, age and the type of AD from patients’ records were collected using a pre-designed data collection sheet. Sera from patients’ sera were investigated for autoantibodies to diagnose ADs using immunological techniques. Data were then analyzed and expressed using descriptive statistics. Results: The majority of approximately two-thirds of patients with ADs attending the health facilities or record-retrieved were females, with a mean age of 32.35 ± 13.72 years (range: 1–89). Approximately half of the patients had a single type of either systemic or organ-specific ADs, while less than 1% had concurrent ADs. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) were the most frequent systemic ADs, being higher among females than males with male:female ratios of 1:4, 1:6 and 1:7, respectively. On the other hand, autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), Graves’ disease, Hashimoto's disease and celiac disease (CD) were the most frequent organ-specific ADs. AIH was higher among males than females with a male:female ratio of 2:1, while Graves’ and Hashimoto's diseases and CD were higher among females with a male:female ratio of 1:2–1:5. The most frequent concurrence between ADs was between SLE and RA (55.6%) as well as AIH and AIG (16.7%), being higher among females than males with male:female ratios of 1:9 and 1:2, respectively. SLE and AIH were equally concurrent between males and females, while the concurrence of other types of ADs was observed among females only. Conclusions: AIH, RA and SLE are the most frequent ADs among Yemeni patients with a steady rise in the frequency of ADs over the period 2014-2017 in Sana'a city. Systemic and organ-specific ADs are comparably equal in distribution and concurrently present among approximately 1.0% of cases, with predominance among females compared to males. Population-based studies for the assessment of incidence/prevalence of ADs and the environmental factors associated with the trending increase in the prevalence of ADs in Yemen are issues for further studies. Background Patients with early-stage non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have high survival rates, but patients often say they did not anticipate the effect of the surgery on their postsurgical quality of life (QoL). This study adds to the literature regarding patient and surgeon interactions and highlights the areas where the current approach is not providing good communication. Design Since its start in 2016, the Initiative for Early Lung Cancer Research on Treatment (IELCART), a prospective cohort study, has enrolled 543 patients who underwent surgery for stage I NSCLC within the Mount Sinai Health System. Presurgical patient and surgeon surveys were available for 314 patients, postsurgical surveys for 420, and both pre- and postsurgical surveys for 285. Results Of patients with presurgical surveys, 31.2% said that their surgeon recommended multiple types of treatment. Of patients with postsurgical surveys, 85.0% felt very well prepared and 11.4% moderately well prepared for their postsurgical recovery. The median Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy–Lung Cancer score and social support score of the patients who felt very well prepared was significantly higher than those moderately or not well prepared (24.0 v. 22.0, P < 0.001) and (5.0 [interquartile range: 4.7–5.0] v. 5.0 [IQR: 4.2–5.0], p = 0.015). Conclusions This study provides insight into the areas where surgeons are communicating well with their patients as well as the areas where patients still feel uninformed. Most surgeons feel that they prepare their patients well or very well for surgical recovery, whereas some patients still feel that their surgeons did not prepare them well for postsurgical recovery. Surgeons may want to spend additional time emphasizing postsurgical recovery and QoL with their patients or provide their patients with additional avenues to get their questions and concerns addressed. Highlights Pretreatment discussions could help surgeons understand patient priorities and patients understand the anticipated outcomes for their surgeries. There is an association between feeling prepared for surgery and higher quality of life and social support scores after adjustment for confounders. Despite these pretreatment discussions, patients still feel that they are not well prepared about what to expect during their postsurgical recovery.

Abstract To date, the impact, timeline and duration of COVID‐19 pandemic remains unknown and more than ever it is necessary to provide safe pathways for cancer patients. Multiple triage systems for nonemergent surgical procedures have been published, but potentially curative cancer procedures are essential surgery rather than elective surgery. In the present and future scenario of our country, thoracic oncology teams may have the difficult decision of weighing the utility of surgical intervention against the risk for inadvertent COVID‐19 exposure for patients and medical staff. In consequence, traditional pathways of surgical care must be adjusted to reduce the risk of infection and the use of resources. It is recommended that all thoracic cancer patients should be offered treatment according to the accepted standard of care until shortage of services require a progressive reduction in surgical cases. Here, we present a consensus of recommendations discussed by a multidisciplinary panel of experts on thoracic oncology and based on the best available evidence, and hope it will provide a modifiable framework of guidance for local strategy planners in thoracic cancer care services in Mexico. Key points Significant findings of the study This article provides recommendations to guarantee the continuity of surgical care for thoracic oncology cases during COVID‐19 pandemic, whilst maintaining the safety of patients and medical staff. What this study adds This guideline is the result of an expert consensus on thoracic surgical oncology with recommendations adapted to medical, economic and social realities of Mexico.

Populism and civilizationism have transformed the politics of many countries. Many scholars consider them the biggest challenges to democracy since the rise of fascism and communism in the first half of the last century. The close affinity between populism, civilizationism, and rightwing politics has also been analyzed and recognized in many countries from Turkey to India to the US. However, there are three areas that distinguish the appearance of civilizationism in Israel. First, in contrast to many other countries, civilizationism in Israel is not a new phenomenon. It has been an essential part of Israeli nationalism or Zionism since the early 20th century. Second, unlike many countries, Jewish civilizationism in Israel is an article of faith for all major Israeli political parties. It is not a slogan raised only by the rightwing, conservative part of the political spectrum. Finally, one observes an affinity between civilizationism and populism. Civilizational rhetoric is the mainstay of populist leaders, such as Trump, Erdogan, etc. In Israel, populism and civilizationism have no special relationship as civilizationism is mainstream politics. All politicians, populists and non-populists, have to pay homage to Jewish civilizationism; otherwise, they will not succeed. This paper analyzes the Israeli founding fathers’ statements, the Declaration of Independence, Israeli state symbols, the revival of the Hebrew language, the Law of Return, the first debate in the Knesset, and the more recent Nation-State Law to demonstrate how Jewish civilizationism is old, mainstream, and not exclusively populist.

Beaver dam analogs (BDAs) are being installed on streams where restoration goals include reconnecting the stream to its floodplain, increasing water storage in the stream corridor, and improving the extent and vigor of riparian vegetation. This study evaluated the effects on vegetation vigor of a BDA treatment on Blacktail Creek in southwest Montana, USA, using data from Sentinel-2 satellites and a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS; a.k.a. drone). The goal of this research was to determine if BDA installation increased the health of riparian vegetation. Sentinel-2 remote sensing data from 2016 to 2021 were used to compare the pre- and post-treatment periods, and to evaluate effects in the treated area relative to control areas. Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) values were calculated to quantify vegetation response from the addition of BDAs. These data suggest that installing BDAs at this site has not led to an apparent increase in late-summer vegetation vigor relative to the controls. One potential explanation for these results is that the vegetation was not water limited prior to treatment in this study reach. This is an important consideration for water resource managers prior to installation of BDAs if the main restoration goal is the improvement of riparian vegetation health. Two high spatial resolution sUAS multispectral datasets were collected to evaluate the bias introduced by using the relatively course resolution (10 m) satellite imagery to assess these changes. High-resolution sUAS data allow fine-scale differences in vegetation and inundated area to be distinguished; however, historical sUAS datasets are rarely available. Satellite-based remote sensing has much lower resolution; however, Sentinel-2 satellite data have been available for the entire earth since 2016. This study demonstrates that the combination of sUAS and satellite based remote sensing data provides a method to compare high-resolution datasets for spatial analysis while gaining insight into relatively low-resolution historical data for temporal analysis.

Abstract Background Considering the practicality of geometric morphometrics which could discriminate insect species, this application was extended to the analysis of blow fly larval growth based on cephalopharyngeal skeleton. In forensic entomology, cephalopharyngeal skeleton plays a crucial role in species identification but the morphometric information of this part is scarce. In this study, Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) was reared in two study replicates in natural conditions and samplings were conducted at fixed daily intervals. Cephalopharyngeal skeletons were removed from larvae and mounted on glass slides. Images were obtained from the specimens; digitized and geometric morphometric analysis on C. megacephala cephalopharyngeal skeletons was performed with MorphoJ software based on the ordination of five landmarks. The assessments of this analysis were based on centroid size measurements, visualization on the landmarks displacements, classification of the relative landmarks by using canonical variate analysis, and ontogenetic allometry determination. Abstract Background Virtual reality (VR) has several applications in the medical domain and also generates a secure environment to carry out activities. Evaluation of the effectiveness of VR among older populations revealed positive effects of VR as a tool to reduce risks of falls and also improve the social and emotional well-being of older adults. The decline in physical and mental health, the loss of functional capabilities, and a weakening of social ties represent obstacles towards active aging among older adults and indicate a need for support. Existing research focused on the effects of VR among older populations, and its uses and benefits. Our study investigated the acceptance and use of VR by the elderly. Methods This pilot study was conducted on 30 older adults who voluntarily participated during March to May 2018. Nine VR applications that promote physical activities, motivate users, and provide entertainment were chosen for this study. Participants were asked to use any one of the applications of their choice for 15 min twice a week for 6 weeks. At the end of 6 weeks, participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model and a literature review, to evaluate their acceptance of VR technology. Cronbach’s alpha reliability analysis was used to test the internal consistency of the questionnaire items. Pearson’s product moment correlation was used to examine the validity of the questionnaire. A linear regression and mediation analysis were utilized to identify relationships among the variables of the questionnaire. Results In total, six male and 24 female participants aged 60~95 years volunteered to participate in the study. Perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social norms, and perceived enjoyment were seen to have had significant effects on the intention to use VR. Participants agreed to a large extent regarding the perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, and their experience of using VR. Thus, VR was seen to have high acceptance among this elderly population. Conclusions Older people have positive perceptions towards accepting and using VR to support active aging. They perceived VR to be useful, easy to use, and an enjoyable experience, implying positive attitudes toward adopting this new technology.

The purpose of this study is to develop a checklist (yardstick) which can be used widely across various industries employing mystery shoppers. This research paper focuses on the development of a checklist instrument after a detailed critical review of various theories, concepts and themes associated with mystery shopping. Mystery shopping is being used in many industries such as banking and insurance, Retail and marketing, Government department, entertainment etc., and hence a common yardstick has to be framed which could be used to measure the outcome of mystery shopping assignments. Thus, the research motivation is to construct a checklist for mystery shoppers to evaluate the mystery shopping field work. Selected research articles were taken to critically analyze the theme of mystery shopping. Rigorous efforts had been taken to understand the usage of mystery shopping in various industries to form a common pool of statements which forms the “The Dimensions of Mystery Shopping Program” (DMSP-checklist construction). To ensure the relevance of a common checklist which can be used across various industries, detailed explanation on how the variables had been selected has been explained. Qualitative software named Dedoose, which is now very popular in Social Science, has been used to find the most promising variables. The study concludes that measuring the customers shopping experience is more important for a mystery shopping filed work considering three important variables to be seen in checklist such as: product knowledge, service & customer experience.

The present research examines the contribution of individual differences in chronotype and self-efficacy to the math performance of male and female students in STEM and no-STEM majors. Questionnaires assessing the selected individual differences were distributed to students of Middle Eastern descent enrolled in math courses of the general education curriculum. Summative assessment indices were used to measure performance comprehensively across the entire semester (course grades) and as a one-time occurrence (final test grades). The contribution of morningness and self-efficacy to both course and test performance of STEM students was sensitive to the interaction of gender and major. Instead, neither factor contributed to no-STEM students’ course and test performance. These findings were used to plan improvements in the instruction and advising of students in STEM majors, thereby complying with a key tenet of action research.

Abstract Background Few studies have focused on quality of life (QoL) after treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). There are still questions as to which surgical procedure, extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) or pleurectomy decortication (P/D) is most effective and results in better survival outcomes, involves fewer complications, and results in better QoL. Here we performed a literature review on MPM patients to assess and compare QoL changes after P/D and EPP. Methods Research articles concerning QoL after mesothelioma surgery were identified through May 2018 in Medline. For inclusion, studies were 1) cohort or randomized controlled trials (RCT) design, 2) included standardized QoL instruments, 3) reported QoL measurement after surgery, 4) described the type of surgery performed (EPP or P/D), 5) were written in English. Measures of lung function (FEV1, FVC) and measures from the EORTC-C30 were compared 6 months following surgery with preoperative values. Results QoL data was extracted from 17 articles (14 datasets), encompassing 659 patients (102 EPP, 432 P/D); the available evidence was of low quality. While two studies directly compared QoL between the two surgical procedures, additional data was available from one arm of two RCTs, as the RCTs were not comparing EPP and P/D. The remaining data was reported from observational studies. While QoL was still compromised 6 months following surgery, from the limited and low quality data available it would appear that P/D patients had better QoL than EPP patients across all measures. Physical function, social function and global health were better at follow-up for P/D than for EPP, while other indicators such as pain and cough were similar. Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1) and Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) were reported in one study only, and were higher at follow-up for P/D compared to EPP. Conclusions Although the existing evidence is limited and of low quality, it suggests that P/D patients have better QoL than EPP patients following surgery. QoL outcomes should be factored into the choice of surgical procedure for MPM patients, and the possible effects on lung function and QoL should be discussed with patients when presenting surgical treatment options.

Abstract Entomological evidence can be utilized in forensic investigation to estimate the elapsed time after death or minimum post mortem interval estimation (PMImin). This estimation is based on the age of dipterous specimens feeding on decomposing human tissues, which commonly refers to their larval body length. The objective of this research was to look for alternatives to larval body length which could be impaired by specimen handling and subsequently causing inaccuracy in PMImin estimation. In this research, development of forensic blow fly, Hemipyrellia ligurriens (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), based on larval cephalopharyngeal skeleton length, was described for the first time. Development of H. ligurriens was represented by body length and cephalopharyngeal skeleton consisting anterodorsal process to dorsal cornu (ADP-DC), anterodorsal process to ventral cornu (ADP-VC) and dorsal cornu to ventral cornu (DC-VC). Abstract The effect of insurance type on lung cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survival in Asian patients living in the United States is still under debate. We have analyzed this issue using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. There were 102,733 lung cancer patients age 18–64 years diagnosed between 2007 and 2013. Multilevel regression analysis was performed to identify the association between insurance types, stage at diagnosis, treatment modalities, and overall mortality in Asian and non‐Hispanic White (NHW) patients. Clinical characteristics were significantly different between Asian and NHW patients, except for gender. Asian patients were more likely to present with advanced disease than NHW patients (ORadj = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.06–1.19). Asian patients with non‐Medicaid insurance underwent lobectomy more than NHW patients with Medicaid or uninsured; were more likely to undergo mediastinal lymph node evaluation (MLNE) (ORadj = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.72–2.28) and cancer‐directed surgery and/or radiation therapy (ORadj = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.20–1.65). Asian patients with non‐Medicaid insurance had the best overall survival. Uninsured or Medicaid‐covered Asian patients were more likely to be diagnosed with advanced disease, less likely to undergo MLNE and cancer‐directed treatments, and had shorter overall survival than their NHW counterpart.

Since the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a lot has been written on Hindu nationalism. Prime Minister Modi’s ascendency has similarly resulted in a plethora of books and articles on Hindu populism. However, most of the literature does not distinguish between the two. Hindu nationalism and Hindu populism overlap, particularly in Modi’s India and Modi’s BJP, but they are not the same. In this article, after a discussion on Hinduism’s affinity to populism, an attempt has been made to distinguish between Hindu nationalism and Hindu populism based on an analysis of Hindutva parties’ election manifestos. Since independence, three Hindutva parties have made a name for themselves at the national level: Hindu Mahasabha, Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) and BJP. Based on their importance and success at the national level, one manifesto of Hindu Mahasabha, two manifestos of BJS and four manifestos of the BJP were analyzed based on criteria chosen after literature review. The results show that while Hindu nationalism was strong and visible in early Hindutva parties (Hindu Mahasabha and BJS), Hindu populism was weak and sporadic. Interestingly, for the BJP, there is rise and then drop in Hindu nationalism while Hindu populism has consistently increased.

Small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) are becoming increasingly popular due to their affordability and logistical ease for repeated surveys. While sUAS-based remote sensing has many applications in water resource management, their applicability and limitations in fluvial settings is not well defined. This study uses a combined thermal-optic sUAS to monitor the seasonal geothermal influence of a 1-km-long reach of the Yellowstone River, paired with in-situ streambed temperature profiles to evaluate geothermal seep interactions with Yellowstone River in Montana, USA. Accurate river water surface elevation along the shoreline was estimated using structure from motion (SfM) photogrammetry digital surface models (DSMs); however, water surface elevations were unreliable in the main river channel. Water temperature in thermal infrared (TIR) orthomosaics was accurate in temperature ranges of tens of degrees (>≈30 °C), but not as accurate in temperature ranges of several degrees (>≈15 °C) as compared to in-situ water temperature measurements. This allowed for identification of geothermal features but limited the ability to identify small-scale temperature changes due to river features, such as pools and riffles. The study concludes that rivers with an average width greater than or equal to 123% of the ground area covered by a TIR image will be difficult to study using structure from motion photogrammetry, given Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) altitude restrictions and sensor field of view. This study demonstrates the potential of combined thermal-optic sUAS systems to collect data over large river systems, and when combined with in-situ measurements, can further increase the sUAS utility in identifying river characteristics.

Scuttle flies (Diptera: Phoridae) are a diversified insect group of forensic importance. Their frequent presence on human corpses indoors and in concealed environments can be the sole indicators to estimate the minimum post mortem interval (PMImin). However, bionomics of scuttle flies on decomposing animal carcasses are rarely documented indoors. The objective of this research is to observe and document the occurrence of scuttle flies on decomposing animal carcass placed inside a portable cabin maintained at room temperature (≈25.0 °C) in Bangi, Malaysia. This study was conducted in two rounds for a period of 40-day each and samplings were carried out in different intervals. Adult scuttle flies were aspirated directly from the carcass and preserved in 70% ethanol. Their larvae and pupae were reared until adult stage to facilitate identification. Megaselia scalaris (Loew), Megaselia spiracularis (Schmitz) and Dohrniphora cornuta (Bigot) were the scuttle flies found on the carcasses with M. scalaris being the earliest and dominant to colonize the body. This cosmopolitan species proved to be the best indicator to estimate PMImin indoor but in the increased presence of other fly species, it might be relegated to a secondary role. The scuttle flies were also found to coexist with other dipterans of forensic importance in an indoor environment, mainly Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) (Diptera: Calliphoridae). This information expands the knowledge on the bionomics of scuttle flies on decomposing animal remains indoors.

In forensic entomology, nocturnal oviposition of flies could reduce discrepancy of minimum post-mortem interval (PMImin) estimation which is due to assumption that oviposition only occurs during day time hours. Previous records indicate that some forensic species of Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae displayed nocturnal oviposition and larviposition but such occurrences can be inconsistent. Apart from blow flies and flesh flies, the scuttle flies (Diptera: Phoridae) are known to be forensically important indoors and they exhibit diurnal and nocturnal behaviour. To investigate if oviposition by scuttle flies occurs during night or day time hours, baited scuttle fly traps consisting decomposed cow’s liver were placed inside the Forensic Entomology Laboratory, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia on diurnal and nocturnal intervals. The traps were divided into two groups, i.e. light-exposed and total dark conditions. It was discovered that all specimens collected were Megaselia scalaris (Loew) and they were active and performed oviposition during day and night times. Light exposure did not affect oviposition activity during diurnal and nocturnal periods. Therefore, it is recommended that nocturnal oviposition must be taken into consideration when using this fly as reference for PMImin estimation.
