Abstract

We introduce the MATLAB-based software QuITO (Quasi-Interpolation based Trajectory Optimization) to numerically solve a wide class of constrained nonlinear optimal control problems (OCP). The solver is based on the QuITO (the same abbreviation) algorithm, which is a direct multiple shooting (DMS) technique that leverages a particular type of quasi-interpolation scheme for control trajectory parameterization. The software is equipped with several options for numerical integration, and optimization solvers along with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to make the process of designing and solving the OCPs smooth and seamless for users with minimum coding experience. Abstract

The climate effects of atmospheric aerosol particles serving as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) depend on chemical composition and hygroscopicity, which are highly variable on spatial and temporal scales. Here we present global CCN measurements, covering diverse environments from pristine to highly polluted conditions. We show that the effective aerosol hygroscopicity, κ, can be derived accurately from the fine aerosol mass fractions of organic particulate matter (ϵorg) and inorganic ions (ϵinorg) through a linear combination, κ = ϵorg ⋅ κorg + ϵinorg ⋅ κinorg. In spite of the chemical complexity of organic matter, its hygroscopicity is well captured and represented by a global average value of κorg = 0.12 ± 0.02 with κinorg = 0.63 ± 0.01 as the corresponding value for inorganic ions. By showing that the sensitivity of global climate forcing to changes in κorg and κinorg is small, we constrain a critically important aspect of global climate modelling.

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce a new computer vision task called nighttime dehaze-enhancement. This task aims to jointly perform dehazing and lightness enhancement. Our task fundamentally differs from nighttime dehazing -- our goal is to jointly dehaze and enhance scenes, while nighttime dehazing aims to dehaze scenes under a nighttime setting. In order to facilitate further research on this task, we release a new benchmark dataset called Reside-$\beta$ Night dataset, consisting of 4122 nighttime hazed images from 2061 scenes and 2061 ground truth images. Moreover, we also propose a new network called NDENet (Nighttime Dehaze-Enhancement Network), which jointly performs dehazing and low-light enhancement in an end-to-end manner. We evaluate our method on the proposed benchmark and achieve SSIM of 0.8962 and PSNR of 26.25. We also compare our network with other baseline networks on our benchmark to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. We believe that nighttime dehaze-enhancement is an essential task particularly for autonomous navigation applications, and hope that our work will open up new frontiers in research. Our dataset and code will be made publicly available upon acceptance of our paper.

33. Early Prediction of Student Engagement in Virtual Learning Environments Using Machine Learning Techniques

Abstract

Learning analytics aims at helping the students to attain their learning goals. The predictions in learning analytics are made to enhance the effectiveness of educational interferences. This study predicts student engagement at an early phase of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) course by analyzing data collected from consecutive years. The prediction model is developed using machine learning techniques applied to a subset of Open University Learning Analytics Dataset, provided by Open University (OU), Britain. The investigated data belongs to 7,775 students who attended social science courses for consecutive assessment years. The experiments are conducted with a reduced feature set to predict whether the students are highly or lowly engaged in the courses. The attributes indicating students' interaction with the VLE, their scores, and final results are the most contributing variables for the predictive analysis. Based on these variables, a reduced feature vector is constructed. The baseline used in the study is the linear regression model. The model's best results showed 95% accurate, 95% precise, and 98% relevant results with the Random Forest classification algorithm. Early prediction's relevant features are a subset of click activities, which provided a functional interface between the students and the VLE.

Abstract

The key message from the 1958 Edelman study states that combinations of external gains or losses of sodium, potassium and water leading to an increase of the fraction (total body sodium plus total body potassium) over total body water will raise the serum sodium concentration ([Na]S), while external gains or losses leading to a decrease in this fraction will lower [Na]S. A variety of studies have supported this concept and current quantitative methods for correcting dysnatremias, including formulas calculating the volume of saline needed for a change in [Na]S are based on it. Not accounting for external losses of sodium, potassium and water during treatment and faulty values for body water inserted in the formulas predicting the change in [Na]S affect the accuracy of these formulas. Newly described factors potentially affecting the change in [Na]S during treatment of dysnatremias include the following: (a) exchanges during development or correction of dysnatremias between osmotically inactive sodium stored in tissues and osmotically active sodium in solution in body fluids; (b) chemical binding of part of body water to macromolecules which would decrease the amount of body water available for osmotic exchanges; and (c) genetic influences on the determination of sodium concentration in body fluids. The effects of these newer developments on the methods of treatment of dysnatremias are not well-established and will need extensive studying. Currently, monitoring of serum sodium concentration remains a critical step during treatment of dysnatremias.

Abstract

In this work, we propose a new pooling strategy for language identification by considering Indian languages. The idea is to obtain utterance level features for any variable length audio for robust language recognition. We use the GhostVLAD approach to generate an utterance level feature vector for any variable length input audio by aggregating the local frame level features across time. The generated feature vector is shown to have very good language discriminative features and helps in getting state of the art results for language identification task. We conduct our experiments on 635Hrs of audio data for 7 Indian languages. Our method outperforms the previous state of the art x-vector [11] method by an absolute improvement of 1.88% in F1-score and achieves 98.43% F1-score on the held-out test data. We compare our system with various pooling approaches and show that GhostVLAD is the best pooling approach for this task. We also provide visualization of the utterance level embeddings generated using Ghost-VLAD pooling and show that this method creates embeddings which has very good language discriminative features.

Abstract

Rationale & objectiveThe clearance of protein-bound solutes by the proximal tubules is an innate kidney mechanism for removing putative uremic toxins that could exert cardiovascular toxicity in humans. However, potential associations between impaired kidney clearances of secretory solutes and cardiovascular events among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains uncertain.Study designA multicenter, prospective, cohort study.Setting & participantsWe evaluated 3,407 participants from the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) study.ExposuresBaseline kidney clearances of 8 secretory solutes. We measured concentrations of secretory solutes in plasma and paired 24-hour urine specimens using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).OutcomesIncident heart failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke events.Analytical approachWe used Cox regression to evaluate associations of baseline secretory solute clearances with incident study outcomes adjusting for estimated GFR (eGFR) and other confounders.ResultsParticipants had a mean age of 56 years; 45% were women; 41% were Black; and the median estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 43 mL/min/1.73 m2. Lower 24-hour kidney clearance of secretory solutes were associated with incident heart failure and myocardial infarction but not incident stroke over long-term follow-up after controlling for demographics and traditional risk factors. However, these associations were attenuated and not statistically significant after adjustment for eGFR.LimitationsExclusion of patients with severely reduced eGFR at baseline; measurement variability in secretory solutes clearances.ConclusionsIn a national cohort study of CKD, no clinically or statistically relevant associations were observed between the kidney clearances of endogenous secretory solutes and incident heart failure, myocardial infarction, or stroke after adjustment for eGFR. These findings suggest that tubular secretory clearance provides little additional information about the development of cardiovascular disease events beyond glomerular measures of GFR and albuminuria among patients with mild-to-moderate CKD.
