An experimental study on Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in rubidium (Rb) vapor cells containing inert gases at pressures $\le 5$ Torr is reported. Using an inert-gas-free Rb vapor cell as a reference, we measure frequency shift and line broadening of the EIT spectra in Rb vapor cells with argon, neon or nitrogen gases at pressures ranging from a few mTorr to 5 Torr. The results qualitatively agree with a pseudo-potential model that includes $s$-wave scattering between the Rydberg electron and the inert-gas atoms, and the effect of polarization of the inert-gas atoms by the Rydberg atoms. Our results are important for establishing Rydberg-EIT as an all-optical and non-intrusive spectroscopic probe for field diagnostics in low-pressure radio-frequency discharges., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We analyze an optical atomic clock using two-photon $5S_{1/2} \rightarrow 4D_J$ transitions in rubidium. Four one- and two-color excitation schemes to probe the fine-structure states $4D_{3/2}$ and $4D_{5/2}$ are considered in detail. We compare key characteristics of Rb $4D_J$ and $5D_{5/2}$ two-photon clocks. The $4D_J$ clock features a high signal-to-noise ratio due to two-photon decay at favorable wavelengths, low dc electric and magnetic susceptibilities, and minimal black-body shifts. Ac Stark shifts from the clock interrogation lasers are compensated by two-color Rabi-frequency matching. We identify a "magic" wavelength near 1060~nm, which allows for in-trap, Doppler-free clock-transition interrogation with lattice-trapped cold atoms. From our analysis of clock statistics and systematics, we project a quantum-noise-limited relative clock stability at the $10^{-13}/\sqrt{\tau(s)}$-level, with integration time $\tau$ in seconds, and a relative accuracy of $\sim 10^{-13}$. We describe a potential architecture for implementing the proposed clock using a single telecom clock laser at 1550~nm, which is conducive to optical communication and long-distance clock comparisons. Long-range $(n+2)D_{5/2} \, nF_J$ Rydberg macro-dimers are observed in an ultracold cesium Rydberg gas for $39\leq n\leq48$. Strong dipolar "flip" ($\langle D_{5/2} F_{5/2} \vert \hat{V}_{dd} \vert F_{5/2} D_{5/2} \rangle$, $\langle D_{5/2} F_{7/2} \vert \hat{V}_{dd} \vert F_{7/2} D_{5/2} \rangle$) and "cross" ($\langle D_{5/2} F_{7/2} \vert \hat{V}_{dd} \vert F_{5/2} D_{5/2} \rangle$) couplings lead to bound, fine-structure-mixed $(n+2)D_{5/2}nF_J$ macro-dimers at energies between the $F_J$ fine-structure levels. The $DF$ macro-dimers are measured by microwave photo-association from optically prepared $[(n+2)D_{5/2}]_2$ Rydberg pair states. Calculated adiabatic potential curves are used to elucidate the underlying physics and to model the $DF$ macro-dimer spectra, with good overall agreement. Microwave photo-association allows Franck-Condon tuning, which we have studied by varying the detuning of a Rydberg-atom excitation laser. Further, in Stark spectroscopy we have measured molecular DC electric polarizabilities that are considerably larger than those of the atomic states. The large molecular polarizabilities may be caused by high-$\ell$ mixing. The observed linewidths of the Stark-shifted molecular lines provide initial evidence for intra-molecular induced-dipole-dipole interaction.

We prepare and analyze Rydberg states with orbital quantum numbers $\ell \le 6$ using three-optical-photon electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) and radio-frequency (RF) dressing, and employ the high-$\ell$ states in electric-field sensing. Rubidium-85 atoms in a room-temperature vapor cell are first promoted into the $25F_{5/2}$ state via Rydberg-EIT with three infrared laser beams. Two RF dressing fields then (near-)resonantly couple $25 \ell$ Rydberg states with high $\ell$. The dependence of the RF-dressed Rydberg-state level structure on RF powers, RF and laser frequencies is characterized using EIT. Furthermore, we discuss the principles of DC-electric-field sensing using high-$\ell$ Rydberg states, and experimentally demonstrate the method using test electric fields of $\lesssim$~50~V/m induced via photo-illumination of the vapor-cell wall. We measure the highly nonlinear dependence of the DC-electric-field strength on the power of the photo-illumination laser. Numerical calculations, which reproduce our experimental observations well, elucidate the underlying physics. We investigate a possible realization of an ultracold-atom rotation sensor that is based on recently proposed tractor atom interferometry (TAI). An experimental design that includes generation of a Laguerre-Gaussian-beam-based "pinwheel" optical lattice and multi-loop interferometric cycles is discussed. Numerical simulations of the proposed system demonstrate TAI rotation sensitivity comparable to that of contemporary matter-wave interferometers. We analyze a regime of TAI rotation sensors in which nonadiabatic effects may hinder the system's performance. We apply quantum optimal control to devise a methodology suitable to address this nonadiabaticity. Our studies are of interest for current efforts to realize compact and robust matter-wave rotation sensors, as well as in fundamental-physics applications of TAI.

We report on high-resolution microwave spectroscopy of cesium Rydberg $(n+2)D_{5/2}\rightarrow nF_{J}$ transitions in a cold atomic gas. Atoms laser-cooled and trapped in a magnetic-optical trap are prepared in the $D$ Rydberg state using a two-photon laser excitation scheme. A microwave field transmitted into the chamber with a microwave horn drives the Rydberg transitions, which are probed via state selective field ionization. Varying duration and power of the microwave pulse, we observe Fourier side-band spectra as well as damped, on-resonant Rabi oscillations with pulse areas up to $\gtrsim 3 \pi$. Furthermore, we investigate the Zeeman effect of the clearly resolved $nF_J$ fine-structure levels in fields up to 120~mG, where the transition into $nF_{7/2}$ displays a thee-peak Zeeman pattern, while $nF_{5/2}$ shows a two-peak pattern. Our theoretical models explain all observed spectral characteristics, showing good agreement with the experiment. Our measurements provide a pathway for the study of high-angular-momentum Rydberg states, initialization and coherent manipulation of such states, Rydberg-atom macrodimers, and other Rydberg-atom interactions. Furthermore, the presented methods are suitable for calibration of microwave radiation as well as for nulling and calibration of DC magnetic fields in experimental chambers for cold atoms.

We investigate Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of $^{85}$Rb atomic vapor in a glass cell that contains a 5-Torr neon buffer gas. At low probe power, EIT lines exhibit a positive frequency shift of about 70~MHz and a broadening of about 120~MHz, with minimal dependence on the principal quantum number of the Rydberg states. The EIT line shift arises from s-wave scattering between the Rydberg electron and the Ne atoms, which induces a positive shift near 190~MHz, and from the polarization of the Ne atoms within the Rydberg atom, which adds a negative shift near -120~MHz. The line broadening is largely due to the Ne polarization. Our experimental results are in good qualitative agreement with our theoretical model, in which the shift is linear in buffer-gas density. Our results suggest that Rydberg-EIT can serve as a direct spectroscopic probe for buffer-gas density at low pressure, and that it is suitable for non-invasive measurement of electric fields in low-pressure noble-gas discharge plasmas and in dusty plasmas.

Rydberg quantum sensors are sensitive to radio-frequency fields across an ultra-wide frequency range spanning megahertz to terahertz electromagnetic waves resonant with Rydberg atom dipole transitions. Here we demonstrate an atomic millimeter-wave heterodyne receiver employing continuous-wave lasers stabilized to an optical frequency comb. We characterize the atomic receiver in the W-band at signal frequency of $f$=95.992512~GHz, and demonstrate a sensitivity of 7.9$\mu$V/m/$\sqrt{Hz}$ and a linear dynamic range of 70dB. We develop frequency selectivity metrics for atomic receivers and demonstrate their use in our millimeter-wave receiver, including signal rejection levels at signal frequency offsets $\Delta f/f$ = 10$^{-4}$, 10$^{-5}$ and 10$^{-6}$, 3-dB, 6-dB, 9-dB and 12-dB bandwidths, filter roll-off, and shape factor analysis. We report a measurement of the hyperfine-structure constants of the $^{85}$Rb 4$D_{3/2}$ state using a two-photon 5$S_{1/2}\rightarrow$4$D_{3/2}$ transition. The hyperfine transitions are probed by measuring the transmission of the low-power 795-nm lower-stage laser beam through a cold-atom sample as a function of 795-nm laser frequency, with the frequency of the upper-stage 1476-nm laser fixed. All 4 hyperfine components are well-resolved in the recorded transmission spectra. AC shifts are carefully considered. The field-free hyperfine line positions are obtained by extrapolating measured line positions to zero laser power. The magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole constants, $A$ and $B$, are determined from the hyperfine intervals to be 7.419(35)~MHz and 4.19(19)~MHz, respectively. The results are evaluated in context with previous works. We analyze electric fields in ion sources generated by quasi-continuous photo-ionization of cold Rb atoms trapped in the focal spot of a near-concentric, in-vacuum cavity for 1064-nm laser light. Ion streams are extracted with an external electric field, ${\bf{F}}$. Stark effects of Rb 57$F$ and of nearby high-angular-momentum Rydberg levels, which exhibit large, linear Stark shifts, are employed to study the net electric-field probability distribution within the ion-source region over an extraction-field range of $0

We develop and demonstrate a spectroscopic method for Rydberg-Rydberg transitions using a phase-controlled and -modulated, standing-wave laser field focused on a cloud of cold $^{85}$Rb Rydberg atoms. The method is based on the ponderomotive (${\bf{A}}^2$) interaction of the Rydberg electron, which has less-restrictive selection rules than electric-dipole couplings, allowing us to probe both $nS_{1/2}\rightarrow nP_{1/2}$ and $nS_{1/2}\rightarrow (n+1)S_{1/2}$ transitions in first-order. Without any need to increase laser power, third and fourth-order sub-harmonic drives are employed to access Rydberg transitions in the 40 to 70 GHz frequency range using widely-available optical phase modulators in the Ku-band (12 to 18 GHz). Measurements agree well with simulations based on the model we develop. The spectra have prominent Doppler-free, Fourier-limited components. The method paves the way for optical Doppler-free high-precision spectroscopy of Rydberg-Rydberg transitions and for spatially-selective qubit manipulation with $\mu$m-scale resolution in Rydberg-based simulators and quantum computers.

We report a measurement of the dynamic (ac) scalar polarizability of the $5D_{3/2}$ state in $^{85}$Rb atoms at a laser wavelength of 1064~nm. Contrary to a recent measurement in Phys. Rev. \textbf{A} 104, 063304 (2021), the experiments are performed in a low-intensity regime in which the ac shift is less than the $5D_{3/2}$ state's hyperfine structure, as utilized in numerous experiments with cold, trapped atoms. The extracted ac polarizability is $\alpha_{5D_{3/2}} = -499\pm59$~a.u., within the uncertainty of the aforementioned previous result. The calibration of the 1064~nm light intensity, performed by analyzing light shifts of the D1 line, is the main source of uncertainty. Our results are useful for applications of the Rb $5D_{3/2}$ state in metrology, quantum sensing, and fundamental-physics research on Rydberg atoms and molecules., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We present possible design concepts for a tractor atom interferometer (TAI) based on three-dimensional confinement and transport of ultracold atoms. The confinement reduces device size and wave-packet dispersion, enables arbitrary holding times, and facilitates control to create complex trajectories that allow for optimization to cancel unwanted sensitivity, fast splitting and recombination, and suppression of detrimental nonadiabatic excitation. Thus, the design allows for further advancement of compact, high-sensitivity, quantum sensing technology. In particular, we focus on the implementation of quantum-enhanced accelerometers and gyroscopes. We discuss TAI protocols for both spin-dependent and scalar trapping potentials. Using optimal control theory, we demonstrate the splitting of the wave function on a time scale two orders of magnitude shorter than the previous proposal using adiabatic dynamics, thus maximizing the time spent at full separation, where the interferometric phase is accumulated. Lastly, we explore the possibility of including non-classical correlations between the atoms to improve sensitivity. The performance estimates for TAI give a promising perspective for atom-interferometry-based sensing, significantly exceeding the sensitivities of current state-of-the-art devices., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We measure the hyperfine structure of $nP_{1/2}$ Rydberg states using mm-wave spectroscopy on an ensemble of laser-cooled $^{85}$Rb atoms. Systematic uncertainties in our measurement from the Zeeman splittings induced by stray magnetic fields and dipole-dipole interactions between two Rydberg atoms are factored in with the obtained statistical uncertainty. Our final measurement of the $nP_{1/2}$ hyperfine coupling constant is $A_{\text{hfs}}=1.443(31)$~GHz. This measurement is useful for studies of long-range Rydberg molecules, Rydberg electrometry, and quantum simulation with dipole-dipole interactions involving $nP_{1/2}$ atoms.

Avoided crossings of level pairs with opposite slopes can form potential energy curves for the external degree of freedom of quantum particles. We investigate nonadiabatic decay of metastable states on such avoided crossings (MSACs) using diabatic and adiabatic representations. The system is described by a single scaled adiabaticity parameter, $V$. The time-independent two-component Schr\"odinger equation is solved in both representations, and the nonadiabatic lifetimes of MSACs are determined from a wave-function flux calculation and from the Breit-Wigner formula, leading to four lifetime values for each MSAC. We also solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation in both pictures and derive the MSAC lifetimes from wave-function decay. The sets of six non-perturbative values for the MSAC lifetimes agree well, validating the approaches. As the adiabaticity parameter $V$ is increased by about a factor of ten, the MSAC character transitions from marginally to highly stable, with the lifetimes increasing by about ten orders of magnitude. The $\nu$-dependence of the lifetimes in several regimes is discussed. Time-dependent perturbation theory is found to yield approximate lifetimes that deviate by $\lesssim 30\%$ from the non-perturbative results, while predictions based on the semi-classical Landau-Zener tunneling equation are found to be up to a factor of twenty off, over the ranges of $V$ and $\nu$ studied. Accurate data on electric-dipole transition matrix elements (EDTMs) for bound-bound Rydberg-atom transitions become increasingly important in science and technology. Here we compute radial EDTMs of rubidium using the length, velocity and acceleration gauges for electric-dipole-allowed transitions between states with principal and angular-momentum quantum numbers ranging from 15 to 100. Wave-functions are computed based upon model potentials from Marinescu et al., Phys. Rev. A {\bf{49}}, 982 (1994). Length-gauge EDTMs, often used for low-$\ell$ transitions, are found to deviate from the fundamentally more accurate velocity-gauge EDTMs by relative amounts of up to $\sim 10^{-3}$. We discuss the physical reasons for the observed gauge differences, explain the conditions for applicability of the velocity and length gauges for different transition series, and present a decision tree of how to choose EDTMs. Implications for contemporary Rydberg-atom applications are discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The decay of Rydberg-atom-ion molecules (RAIMs) due to non-adiabatic couplings between electronic potential energy surfaces is investigated. We employ the Born-Huang representation and perform numerical simulations using a Crank-Nicolson algorithm. The non-adiabatic lifetimes of rubidium RAIMs for the lowest ten vibrational states, $\nu$, are computed for selected Rydberg principal quantum numbers, $n$. The non-adiabatic lifetimes are found to generally exceed the radiative Rydberg-atom lifetimes. We observe and explain a trend of the lifetimes as a function of $\nu$ and $n$, and attribute irregularities to quantum interference arising from a shallow potential well in an inner potential surface. We use double-resonant two-photon laser spectroscopy to measure the dynamic scalar polarizability of the rubidium 5$D_{3/2}$ level, $\alpha^{S}_{5D_{3/2}}$, at a wavelength of $\lambda=1064$~nm. Since $\lambda$ is shorter than the photoionization (PI) limit of the Rb 5$D_{3/2}$ level, $\alpha^{S}_{5D_{3/2}}$ depends on both bound-bound and bound-free transition matrix elements. The level also undergoes significant broadening due to PI. The $1064$-nm field is applied in the form of a deep optical lattice ($\sim10^{5}$~photon recoils) generated by an in-vacuum field-enhancement cavity. In our spectroscopic method, we use known dynamic polarizabilities to eliminate the need to measure the light intensity. Our method yields, in atomic units, $\alpha^{S}_{5D_{3/2}}=-524(17)$, in agreement with estimates. Additionally, we extract the $5D_{3/2}$ photoionization cross section $\sigma$ at $1064$~nm from spectral linewidths; we find $\sigma=44(1)$~Mb.

We present and characterize an atomic vapor cell with silicon ring electrodes directly embedded between borosilicate glass tubes. The cell is assembled with an anodic bonding method and is filled with Rb vapor. The ring electrodes can be externally connectorized for application of electric fields to the inside of the cell. An atom-based, all-optical, laser-spectroscopic field sensing method is employed to measure electric fields in the cell. Here, the Stark effect of electric-field-sensitive rubidium Rydberg atoms is exploited to measure DC electric fields in the cell of $\sim$5 V/cm, with a relative uncertainty of 10%. Measurement results are compared with DC field calculations, allowing us to quantify electric-field attenuation due to free surface charges inside the cell. We further measure the propagation of microwave fields into the cell, using Autler-Townes splitting of Rydberg levels as a field probe. Results are obtained for a range of microwave powers and polarization angles relative to the cell's ring electrodes. We compare the results with microwave-field calculations. We develop a formalism for photoionization (PI) and potential energy curves (PECs) of Rydberg atoms in ponderomotive optical lattices and apply it to examples covering several regimes of the optical-lattice depth. The effect of lattice-induced PI on Rydberg-atom lifetime ranges from noticeable to highly dominant when compared with natural decay. The PI behavior is governed by the generally rapid decrease of the PI cross sections as a function of angular-momentum ($\ell$), and by lattice-induced $\ell$-mixing across the optical-lattice PECs. In GHz-deep lattices, $\ell$-mixing leads to a rich PEC structure, and the significant low-$\ell$ PI cross sections are distributed over many lattice-mixed Rydberg states. In lattices less than several tens-of-MHz deep, atoms on low-$\ell$ PECs are essentially $\ell$-mixing-free and maintain large PI cross sections, while atoms on high-$\ell$ PECs trend towards being PI-free. Characterization of PI in GHz-deep Rydberg-atom lattices may be beneficial for optical control and quantum-state manipulation of Rydberg atoms, while data on PI in shallower lattices are potentially useful in high-precision spectroscopy and quantum-computing applications of lattice-confined Rydberg atoms.

We present calculations of the photoionization (PI) cross sections of rubidium and cesium Rydberg atoms for light with wavelengths ranging from the infrared to the ultraviolet, using model potentials from [M. Marinescu, H. R. Sadeghpour, and A. Dalgarno, Phys. Rev. A 49, 982 (1994)]. The origins of pronounced PI minima are identified by investigating the free-electron wavefunctions. These include broad PI minima in the $nS$ to $\epsilon P$ PI channels of both Rb and Cs, with free-electron energy $\epsilon$, which are identified as Cooper minima. Much narrower PI minima in the $nD$ to $\epsilon F$ channels are due to shape resonances of the free-electron states. We describe possible experimental procedures for measuring the PI minima, and we discuss their implications in fundamental atomic physics as well as in practical applications., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

We realize and model a Rydberg-state atom interferometer for measurement of phase and intensity of radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic waves. A phase reference is supplied to the atoms via a modulated laser beam, enabling atomic measurement of the RF wave's phase without an external RF reference wave. The RF and optical fields give rise to closed interferometric loops within the atoms' internal Hilbert space. In our experiment, we construct interferometric loops in the state space $\{ 6P_{3/2}, 90S_{1/2}, 91S_{1/2}, 90P_{3/2} \}$ of cesium and employ them to measure phase and intensity of a 5 GHz RF wave in a room-temperature vapor cell. Electromagnetically induced transparency on the $6S_{1/2}$ to $6P_{3/2}$ transition serves as an all-optical interferometer probe. The RF phase is measured over a range of $\pi$, and a sensitivity of 2 mrad is achieved. We present a magneto-optical trap (MOT) design based on millimeter ball lenses, contained within a metal cube of 0.75$^{\prime \prime}$ side length. We present evidence of trapping approximately $4.2\times 10^5$ of $^{85}$Rb atoms with a number density of $3.2\times 10^9$ atoms/cm$^{3}$ and a loading time of 1.3 s. Measurement and a kinetic laser-cooling model are used to characterize the atom trap design. The design provides several advantages over other types of MOTs: the laser power requirement is low, the small lens and cube sizes allow for miniaturization of MOT applications, and the lack of large-diameter optical beam pathways prevents external blackbody radiation from entering the trapping region., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We study the expansion of a cold, non-neutral ion plasma into the vacuum. The plasma is made from cold rubidium atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) and is formed via ultraviolet photoionization. We employ time-delayed plasma extraction and imaging onto a position- and time-sensitive micro-channel plate detector to analyze the plasma. We report on the formation and persistence of plasma shock shells, pair correlations in the plasma, and external-field-induced plasma focusing effects. We also develop trajectory and fluid descriptions to model the data and to gain further insight. The simulations verify the formation of shock shells and correlations, and allow us to model time- and position-dependent density, temperature, and Coulomb coupling parameter, $\Gamma({\bf{r}},t)$. Cs$_2$ Rydberg-ground molecules consisting of a Rydberg, $nD_{J}$ (33 $\leq$ $n$ $\leq$ 39), and a ground state atom, 6$S_{1/2} (F=$3 or 4$)$, are investigated by photo-association spectroscopy in a cold atomic gas. We observe vibrational spectra that correspond to triplet $^T\Sigma$ and mixed $^{S,T}\Sigma$ molecular states. We establish scaling laws for the energies of the lowest vibrational states vs principal quantum number and obtain zero-energy singlet and triplet $s$-wave scattering lengths from experimental data and a Fermi model. Line broadening in electric fields reveals the permanent molecular electric-dipole moments; measured values agree well with calculations. We study the expansion of a strongly coupled, non-neutral, and cylindrically arranged ion plasma into the vacuum. The plasma is made from cold rubidium atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) and is formed via ultraviolet photoionization. Higher-density and lower-density plasmas are studied to exhibit different aspects indicative of strong coupling. In a higher-density regime, we report on the formation and persistence of plasma shock fronts, as well as external-field-induced plasma focusing effects. In the lower-density regime, conditions are ideal to observe the development and evolution of nearest-neighbor ion correlations, as well as geometry-induced asymmetries in the pair correlation function. In this article we describe the basic principles of Rydberg atom-based RF sensing and present the development of atomic pulsed RF detection and RF phase sensing establishing capabilities pertinent to applications in communications and sensing. To date advances in Rydberg atom-based RF field sensors have been rooted in a method in which the fundamental physical quantity being detected and measured is the electric field amplitude, $E$, of the incident RF electromagnetic wave. The first part of this paper is focused on using atom-based $E$-field measurement for RF field-sensing and communications applications. With established phase-sensitive technologies, such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) as well as emerging trends in phased-array antennas in 5G, a method is desired that allows robust, optical retrieval of the RF phase using an enhanced atom-based field sensor. In the second part of this paper we describe our fundamentally new atomic RF sensor and measurement method for the phase of the RF electromagnetic wave that affords all the performance advantages exhibited by the atomic sensor. The presented phase-sensitive RF field detection capability opens atomic RF sensor technology to a wide array of application areas including phase-modulated signal communication systems, radar, and field amplitude and phase mapping for near-field/far-field antenna characterizations.

We present a self-calibrating, SI-traceable broadband Rydberg-atom-based radio-frequency (RF) electric field probe (the Rydberg Field Probe or RFP) and measurement instrument (Rydberg Field Measurement System or RFMS). The RFMS comprises an atomic RF field probe (RFP), connected by a ruggedized fiber-optic patch cord to a portable mainframe control unit with a software interface for RF measurement and analysis including real-time field readout and RF waveform visualization. The instrument employs electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) readout of spectral signatures from RF-sensitive Rydberg states of an atomic vapor for continuous, pulsed, and modulated RF field measurement. The RFP exploits resonant and off-resonant Rydberg-field interactions to realize broadband RF measurements at frequencies ranging from ~10 MHz to sub-THz over a wide dynamic range. The RFMS incorporates an RF-field-free atomic reference and a laser-frequency tracker to ensure reliability and accuracy of the RF measurement. We characterize the RFP and measure polar field and polarization patterns of the RFP at 12.6 GHz RF in the far-field of a standard gain horn antenna. Measurements at 2.5 GHz are also performed. Measured patterns are in good agreement with simulations. A detailed calibration procedure and uncertainty analysis are presented that account for deviations from an isotropic response over a $4\pi$ solid angle, arising from dielectric structures external to the atomic measurement volume. Contributions to the measurement uncertainty from the fundamental atomic measurement method and associated analysis as well as material, geometry, and hardware design choices are accounted for. A calibration (C) factor is used to establish absolute-standard SI-traceable calibration of the RFP. Pulsed and modulated RF field measurement, and time-domain RF-pulse waveform imaging are also demonstrated.

We discuss three proposed schemes of initializing circular-state Rydberg atoms via optical couplings provided by the ponderomotive effect in contrast to the current circularization methods that utilize electric-dipole interactions. In our first proposed method, a radial optical trap consisting of two Laguerre-Gaussian beams of opposite winding numbers transfers orbital angular momentum to the Rydberg atom, providing a first-order coherent coupling between an F-state and a circular state. Additionally, we propose a one-dimensional ponderomotive optical lattice modulated at rf frequencies, providing quadrupole-like couplings in the hydrogenic manifold for rapid adiabatic passage through a series of intermediate Rydberg states into the circular state. For the third proposed scheme, a two-dimensional ponderomotive optical lattice with a time-orbiting trap center induces effectively the same coupling as a $\sigma^{+}$ or $\sigma^{-}$-polarized rf field of tunable purity for all-optical rapid adiabatic passage into the circular state.

We present measurements of the hyperfine structure splittings of $nS_{1/2}$ Rydberg states of $^{85}$Rb for $n$= 43, 44, 45 and 46. From the splittings, the hyperfine coupling constant, $A_{\mathrm{HFS}}$, is determined to be 15.372(80) GHz. This result is an order-of-magnitude improvement from previous measurements. We study and account for systematic uncertainty sources, such as unwanted electric and magnetic fields, dipolar Rydberg-Rydberg interactions, and AC shifts. Initial evidence for hyperfine-mixed Rydberg pair states is found.

We report on Rydberg spectroscopy of ultracold atoms in an atom-ion hybrid trap for probing the electric fields in a mixture of atoms and ions. We obtain spectra which exhibit excitation gaps corresponding to avoided level crossings in the Stark map. From these measurements we can conclude that the ground state atoms experience electrical fields of up to 250 V/cm. There is, however, a difficulty in interpreting the results, because some data indicate that the electrical fields are produced by the ions while other data indicate that they stem from the Paul trap. We discuss possible scenarios for explaining the measured data, provide first measurements to check these scenarios, and propose methods to finally solve this puzzle., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We present a method to control collisions between ultracold neutral atoms in the electronic ground state and trapped ions. During the collision, the neutral atom is resonantly excited by a laser to a low-field-seeking Rydberg state, which is repelled by the ion. As the atom is reflected from the ion, it is de-excited back into its electronic ground level. The efficiency of shielding is analyzed as a function of laser frequency and power, initial atom-ion collision energy, and collision angle. The suitability of several Rydberg levels of Na and Rb for shielding is discussed. Useful applications of shielding include the suppression of unwanted chemical reactions between atoms and ions, a prerequisite for controlled atom-ion interactions., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Radio reception relies on antennas for the collection of electromagnetic fields carrying information, and receiver elements for demodulation and retrieval of the transmitted information. Here we demonstrate an atom-based receiver for AM and FM microwave communication with a 3-dB bandwidth in the baseband of $\sim$100~kHz that provides optical circuit-free field pickup, multi-band carrier capability, and inherently high field sensitivity. The quantum receiver exploits field-sensitive cesium Rydberg vapors in a centimeter-sized glass cell, and quantum-optical readout of baseband signals modulated onto carriers with frequencies ranging over four octaves, from C-band to Q-band. Receiver bandwidth, dynamic range and sideband suppression are characterized, and acquisition of audio waveforms of human vocals demonstrated. The atomic radio receiver is a valuable receiver technology because it does not require antenna structures and is resilient against electromagnetic interference, while affording multi-band operation in a single compact receiving element.

We observe long-range $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb (24$D$+5$S_{1/2}$) Rydberg molecules for eight different spin couplings, with binding energies up to 440~MHz and sub-percent relative uncertainty. Isotopic effects of the molecular binding energies arise from the different masses and nuclear spins. Because the vibrational states involve different spin configurations and cover a wide range of internuclear separations, the states have different dependencies on the $s$-wave and $p$-wave scattering phase shifts for singlet and triplet scattering. Fitting the spectroscopic data, we comprehensively determine all four scattering length functions over the relevant energy range as well as the zero-energy scattering lengths of the two $s$-wave channels. Our unusually high temperature and low density (180 $\mu$K, 1 $\times$ 10$^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$) suggest that the molecule excitation occurs through photoassisted collisions.

Electrostatic multipole interactions generate long-range Rydberg-Rydberg macrodimer. We calculate the adiabatic potentials of cesium $(nD_{J})_2$ Rydberg macrodimers for principal quantum numbers $n$ ranging from 56 to 62, for $J=3/2$ and $5/2$, and for the allowed values of the conserved sum of the atomic angular-momentum components along the internuclear axis, $M$. For most combinations $(n, M, J)$ exactly one binding potential exists, which should give rise to Rydberg macrodimer states. We study the dependence of the adiabatic potentials on the size of the two-body basis sets used in the calculation, and on the maximal order, $q_{max}$, of the multipole terms included in the calculation. We determine the binding energies and lengths of the binding adiabatic potentials, and investigate their scaling behaviors as a function of the effective principal quantum number; these parameters are relevant to experimental preparation of Rydberg-atom macrodimers. Avoided crossings between adiabatic potentials affect the well shapes and the scaling behaviors differently in two distinct domains in $n$. We present a hybrid atomic sensor that realizes radio-frequency electric field detection with intrinsic field amplification and polarization selectivity for robust high-sensitivity field measurement. The hybrid sensor incorporates a passive resonator element integrated with an atomic vapor cell that provides amplification and polarization selectivity for detection of incident radio-frequency fields. The amplified intra-cavity radio-frequency field is measured by atoms using a quantum-optical readout of AC level shifts of field-sensitive atomic Rydberg states. In our experimental demonstration, we employ a split field-enhancement resonator embedded in a rubidium vapor cell to amplify and detect C-band radio-frequency fields. We observe a field amplification equivalent to a 24 dB gain in intensity sensitivity. The spatial profile of the resonant field mode inside the field-enhancement cavity is characterized. The resonant field modes only couple with a well-defined polarization component of the incident field, allowing us to measure the polarization of the incident field in a robust fashion. Measured field enhancement factors, polarization-selectivity performance, and field distributions for the hybrid sensor are in good agreement with simulations. Applications of hybrid atomic sensors in ultra-weak radio-frequency detection and advanced measurement capabilities are discussed.

Atomic sensing and measurement of millimeter-wave (mmW) and THz electric fields using quantum-optical EIT spectroscopy of Rydberg states in atomic vapors has garnered significant interest in recent years towards the development of atomic electric-field standards and sensor technologies. Here we describe recent work employing small atomic vapor cell sensing elements for near-field imaging of the radiation pattern of a K$_u$-band horn antenna at 13.49 GHz. We image fields at a spatial resolution of $\lambda/10$ and measure over a 72 to 240 V/m field range using off-resonance AC-Stark shifts of a Rydberg resonance. The same atomic sensing element is used to measure sub-THz electric fields at 255 GHz, an increase in mmW-frequency by more than one order of magnitude. The sub-THz field is measured over a continuous $\pm$100 MHz frequency band using a near-resonant mmW atomic transition.

An optical probe of cesium Rydberg atoms generated in a thermal vapor cell is used to retrieve a baseband signal modulated onto a 16.98-GHz carrier wave in real-time, demonstrating an atom-based quantum receiver suitable for microwave communication. The 60$S_{1/2}$ Rydberg level of cesium atoms in the cell is tracked via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), an established laser-spectroscopic method. The microwave carrier is resonant with the 60$S_{1/2}$ $\rightarrow$ 60$P_{1/2}$ Rydberg transition, resulting in an Autler-Townes (AT) splitting of the EIT signal. Amplitude modulation of the carrier wave results in a corresponding modulation in the optically retrieved AT splitting. Frequency modulation causes a change in relative height of the two AT peaks, which can be optically detected and processed to retrieve the modulation signal. The optical retrieval of the baseband signal does not require electronic demodulation. The method is suitable for carrier frequencies within a range from $\sim 1$~GHz to hundreds of GHz. The baseband bandwidth, which is $\sim$~20~Hz in the present demonstration, can be increased by faster spectroscopic sampling., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We demonstrate continuous-frequency electric field measurements of high-intensity microwaves via optical spectroscopy in a small atomic vapor cell. The spectroscopic response of a room-temperature rubidium atomic vapor in a glass cell is investigated and employed for absolute measurements of K$_a$-band microwave electric fields from $\sim$200 V/m to $>$1 kV/m over a continuous frequency range of $\pm $1 GHz (15% band coverage). It is established that in strong microwave fields frequency-specific spectral features allow for electric field measurements over a large continuous frequency range.

Measurements of plasma electric fields are essential to the advancement of plasma science and applications. Methods for non-invasive in situ measurements of plasma fields on sub-millimeter length scales with high sensitivity over a large field range remain an outstanding challenge. Here, we introduce and demonstrate a new method for plasma electric field measurement that employs electromagnetically induced transparency as a high-resolution quantum-optical probe for the Stark energy level shifts of plasma-embedded Rydberg atoms, which serve as highly-sensitive field sensors with a large dynamic range. The method is applied in diagnostics of plasmas photo-excited out of a cesium vapor. The plasma electric fields are extracted from spatially-resolved measurements of field-induced shape changes and shifts of Rydberg resonances in rubidium tracer atoms. Measurement capabilities over a range of plasma densities and temperatures are exploited to characterize plasmas in applied magnetic fields and to image electric-field distributions in cyclotron-heated plasmas.

We investigate the effect of band-limited white Gaussian noise (BLWGN) on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes (AT) splitting, when performing atom-based continuous-wave (CW) radio-frequency (RF) electric (E) field strength measurements with Rydberg atoms in an atomic vapor. This EIT/AT-based E-field measurement approach is currently being investigated by several groups around the world as a means to develop a new SI traceable RF E-field measurement technique. For this to be a useful technique, it is important to understand the influence of BLWGN. We perform EIT/AT based E-field experiments with BLWGN centered on the RF transition frequency and for the BLWGN blue-shifted and red-shifted relative to the RF transition frequency. The EIT signal can be severely distorted for certain noise conditions (band-width, center-frequency, and noise power), hence altering the ability to accurately measure a CW RF E-field strength. We present a model to predict the changes in the EIT signal in the presence of noise. This model includes AC Stark shifts and on resonance transitions associated with the noise source. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Aulter-Townes splitting (ATS) are two similar yet distinct phenomena that modify the transmission of a weak probe field through an absorption medium in the presence of a coupling field, featured in a variety of three-level atomic systems. In many applications it is important to distinguish EIT from ATS splitting. We present EIT and ATS spectra in a cold-atom three-level cascade system, involving the 35$S_{1/2}$ Rydberg state of cesium. The EIT linewidth, $\gamma_{EIT}$, defined as the full width at half maximum (FWHM), and the ATS splitting, $\gamma_{ATS}$, defined as the peak-to-peak distance between AT peak pairs, are used to delineate the EIT and ATS regimes and to characterize the transition between the regimes. In the cold-atom medium, in the weak-coupler (EIT) regime $\gamma_{EIT}$ $\approx$ A + B($\Omega_{c}^2$ + $\Omega_{p}^2)/\Gamma_{eg}$, where $\Omega_{c}$ and $\Omega_{p}$ are the coupler and probe Rabi frequencies, $\Gamma_{eg}$ is the spontaneous decay rate of the intermediate 6P$_{3/2}$ level, and parameters $A$ and $B$ that depend on the laser linewidth. We explore the transition into the strong-coupler (ATS) regime, which is characterized by the linear relation $\gamma_{ATS}$ $\approx$ $\Omega_{c}$. Long-range macrodimers formed by D-state cesium Rydberg atoms are studied in experiments and in calculations. Cesium 62DJ-62DJ Rydberg-atom macrodimers, bonded via long-range multipole interaction, are prepared by two-color photo-association in a cesium atom trap. The first color (pulse A) resonantly excites seed Rydberg atoms, while the second (pulse B, detuned by the molecular binding energy) resonantly excites the Rydberg-atom macrodimer states below the 62DJ pair asymptotes. The Rydberg-atom molecules are measured by extraction of auto-ionization products and Rydberg-atom electric-field ionization, and ion detection. Molecular spectra are compared with calculations of adiabatic molecular potentials. The lifetime of the molecules is obtained from exponential fits to the dependence of the molecular signal on the detection delay time; lifetimes of about 6 us are found.

A method for performing a precision measurement of the Rydberg constant, $R_{\infty}$, using cold circular Rydberg atoms is proposed. These states have long lifetimes, as well as negligible quantum-electrodynamics (QED) and no nuclear-overlap corrections. Due to these advantages, the measurement can help solve the "proton radius puzzle" [Bernauer, Pohl, Sci. Am. 310, 32 (2014)]. The atoms are trapped using a Rydberg-atom optical lattice, and transitions are driven using a recently-demonstrated lattice-modulation technique to perform Doppler-free spectroscopy. The circular-state transition frequency yields $R_{\infty}$. Laser wavelengths and beam geometries are selected such that the lattice-induced transition shift is minimized. The selected transitions have no first-order Zeeman and Stark corrections, leaving only manageable second-order Zeeman and Stark shifts. For Rb, the projected relative uncertainty of $R_{\infty}$ in a measurement under the presence of the Earth's gravity is $10^{-11}$, with the main contribution coming from the residual lattice shift. This could be reduced in a future micro-gravity implementation. The next-important systematic arises from the Rb$^+$ polarizability (relative-uncertainty contribution of $\approx 3 \times10^{-12}$).

We investigate atom-based electric-field calibration and polarization measurement of a 100-MHz linearly polarized radio-frequency (RF) field using cesium Rydberg-atom electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a room-temperature vapor cell. The calibration method is based on matching experimental data with the results of a theoretical Floquet model. The utilized 60$D_J$ fine structure Floquet levels exhibit $J$- and $m_j$-dependent AC Stark shifts and splittings, and develop even-order RF-modulation sidebands. The Floquet map of cesium 60$D_J$ fine structure states exhibits a series of exact crossings between states of different $m_j$, which are not RF-coupled. These exact level crossings are employed to perform a rapid and precise ($\pm 0.5\%$) calibration of the RF electric field. We also map out three series of narrow avoided crossings between fine structure Floquet levels of equal $m_j$ and different $J$, which are weakly coupled by the RF field via a Raman process. The coupling leads to narrow avoided crossings that can also be applied as spectroscopic markers for RF field calibration. We further find that the line-strength ratio of intersecting Floquet levels with different $m_j$ provides a fast and robust measurement of the RF field's polarization., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We report on a novel method for photo-association of strongly polar trilobite Rydberg molecules. This exotic ultralong-range dimer, consisting of a ground-state atom bound to the Rydberg electron via electron-neutral scattering, inherits its polar character from the admixture of high angular momentum electronic orbitals. The absence of low-$L$ character hinders standard photo-association techniques. Here, we show that for suitable principal quantum numbers resonant coupling of the orbital motion with the nuclear spin of the perturber, mediated by electron-neutral scattering, hybridizes the trilobite molecular potential with the more conventional ${\rm{S}}$-type molecular state. This provides a general path to associate trilobite molecules with large electric dipole moments, as demonstrated via high-resolution spectroscopy. We find a dipole moment of 135(45) D for the trilobite state. Our results are compared to theoretical predictions based on a Fermi-model., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We perform Zeeman spectroscopy on a Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system in a room-temperature Cs vapor cell, in magnetic fields up to 50~Gauss and for several polarization configurations. The magnetic interactions of the $\vert 6S_{1/2}, F_g=4 \rangle$ ground, $\vert 6P_{3/2}, F_e=5 \rangle$ intermediate, and $\vert 33S_{1/2} \rangle$ Rydberg states that form the ladder-type EIT system are in the linear Zeeman, quadratic Zeeman, and the deep hyperfine Paschen-Back regimes, respectively. Starting in magnetic fields of about 5~Gauss, the spectra develop an asymmetry that becomes paramount in fields $\gtrsim40$~Gauss. We use a quantum Monte Carlo wave-function approach to quantitatively model the spectra. Simulated spectra are in good agreement with experimental data. The asymmetry in the spectra is, in part, due to level shifts caused by the quadratic Zeeman effect, but it also reflects the complicated interplay between optical pumping and EIT in the magnetic field. Relevance to measurement applications is discussed. %The simulations are also used to study optical pumping in the magnetic field and to investigate the interplay between optical pumping and EIT, which reduces photon scattering and optical pumping.
